Abstract:The article analyzes the integral atmospheric water content by data of continuous GPS/GLONASS observations over 2017–2019 at 13 observation points of the GNSS network in the territory of the Primorski Krai. The procedure of IWV evaluation is based on the decomposition of the total zenith tropospheric delay of satellite signal into the hydrostatic and humidity components. The GNSS-estimates of IWV were verified using radiosonde data from two weather stations of the Primorski Department of Hydrometeorological Service. The correlation between the results of GNSS and radiosonde observations was 0.93–0.99. The obtained IWV estimates were compared with Global Forecast System data. The comparison involved 16 nodes of the model grid nearest to each sensor. It was shown that the correlation of GNSS estimates of IWV with GFS data at the moment of forecast is, on the average, >0.90; starting from the forecast advance time of 48 h, the coefficient of correlation decreases to 0.60. The coefficient of correlation with GFS is 0.85–0.97 in the warm season and ≤0.60 in the cold season. The analysis of the spatial distribution of the correlation coefficient showed that the measured IWV values are linearly related with the PWEA model values, which refer to the grid nodes that show lesser elevation difference with the GNSS point. The results of the study suggest the conclusion that the expenses for the acquisition and processing of GNSS data are minimal and the operation of grid points does not depend on weather conditions. This makes the results of GNSS sounding promising for use in regional atmospheric models.

Abstract:We retrieved the total content of the atmospheric water vapor (or Integrated Water Vapor, IWV) from extensive sets of photometric data obtained since 1995 at Lindenberg Meteorological Observatory with star and sun photometers. Different methods of determination of the empirical parameters that are necessary for the retrieval are discussed. The instruments were independently calibrated using laboratory measurements made at Pulkovo Observatory with the VKM-100 multi-pass vacuum cell. The empirical parameters were also calculated by the simulation of the atmospheric absorption by water vapor, using the MODRAN-4 program package for different model atmospheres. The results are compared to those presented in the literature, obtained with different instruments and methods of the retrieval. The reliability of the empirical parameters, used for the power approximation that links the water vapor content with the observed absorption, is analyzed. Currently, the total (from measurements, calibration, and calculations) errors yield the standard uncertainty of about 10% in the total column water vapor. We discuss the possibilities for improving the accuracy of calibration to ~1% as indispensable condition in order to make it possible to use data obtained by optical photometry as an independent reference for other methods (GPS, MW-radiometers, lidar, etc).

Abstract:This work presents a comparison of integrated water vapor (IWV) data recorded from microwave radiometer (MWR) and sun-photometer (SP) using global navigation satellite system (GNSS) IWV as reference in five mid-latitude sites of Portugal and Spain (2003–2021). A very high correlation is obtained for both instruments (R 2 between 0.94 and 0.98), although, while MWR shows a wet bias, SP exhibits a dry one. In addition, a dependence of mean bias error (MBE) and standard deviation (SD) on IWV has been observed, increasing (larger discrepancies) both indices as IWV increases. The solar zenith angle (SZA) dependence is also studied, finding slightly larger discrepancies for the MWR than for SP in comparison with GNSS for very high values of SZA. Finally, a marked seasonal dependence is observed for SP-GNSS differences, modulated by the IWV dependence explained above. In contrast, the seasonal dependence for MWR is quite weaker than it is for SP. Therefore, in spite of the excellent agreement found among the different instruments, it is recommended that: i) the dependence with IWV be studied and corrected to further increase the performance of the instruments, and ii) metadata be used to filter out situations in which the instrument cannot operate properly.

Abstract:Water vapor is one of the most important greenhouse gases in the world. There are many techniques that can measure water vapor directly or remotely. In this work, we first study the Global Positioning System (GPS)- and the Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS)-derived Zenith Wet Delay (ZWD) time series based on 11 years of the second reprocessing campaign of International Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) Service (IGS) using 320 globally distributed stations. The amount of measurement, the local environment, and the antenna radome are shown to be the main factors that affect the GNSS ZWDs and the corresponding a posteriori formal errors. Furthermore, antenna radome is able to effectively reduce the systematic bias of ZWDs and a posteriori formal errors between the GPS- and GLONASS-based solutions. With the development of the GLONASS, the ZWD differences between the GPS- and the GLONASS-based solutions have gradually decreased to sub-mm-level after GLONASS was fully operated. As the GPS-based Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV) is usually used as the reference to evaluate the other PWV products, the PWV consistency among several common techniques is evaluated, including GNSSs, spaceborne sensors, and numerical products from the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). As an example of the results from a detailed comparison analysis, the long-term global analysis shows that the PWV obtained from the GNSS and the ECMWF have great intra-agreements. Based on the global distribution of the magnitude of the PWV and the PWV drift, most of the techniques showed superior agreement and proved their ability to do climate research. With a detailed study performed for the ZWDs and PWV on a long-term global scale, this contribution provides a useful supplement for future research on the GNSS ZWD and PWV.

Towards Real-Time Integrated Water Vapor Estimates with Triple-Frequency Galileo Observations and CNES Products

Abstract:Integrated water vapor (IWV) is a crucial parameter for tropospheric sounding and weather prediction applications. IWV is essentially calculated using observations from global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). Presently, the Galileo satellite system is further developed, including more visible satellites that transmit multi-frequency signals. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of real-time IWV estimated from a triple-frequency Galileo-only precise point positioning (PPP) processing model utilizing E1, E5a, E5b, and E5 observations, which is not addressed by the previous studies. For this purpose, Galileo datasets from 10 global reference stations spanning various 4-week periods in the winter, spring, summer, and fall seasons are acquired. To process the acquired datasets, dual- and triple-frequency ionosphere-free PPP solutions are used, including E1E5a PPP, E1E5aE5b PPP, and E1E5E5b PPP solutions. The publicly available real-time products from the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) are utilized. The real-time IWV values are computed and then validated with the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) reanalysis products (ERA5) counterparts. The findings demonstrate that the root mean square error (RMSE) of the estimated IWV is less than 3.15 kg/m2 with respect to the ECMWF ERA5 counterparts. Furthermore, the E1E5aE5b PPP and E1E5E5b PPP models enhance the IWV's accuracy by about 11% and 16%, respectively, compared with the E1E5a PPP model.

Abstract:After 30 years since the beginning of the Global Positioning System (GPS), or, more generally, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) meteorology, this technique has proven to be a reliable method for retrieving atmospheric water vapor; it is low-cost, weather independent, with high temporal resolution and is highly accurate and precise. GNSS ground-based networks are becoming denser, and the first stations installed have now quite long time-series that allow the study of the temporal features of water vapor and its relevant role inside the climate system. In this review, the different GNSS methodologies to retrieve atmospheric water vapor content re-examined, such as tomography, conversion of GNSS tropospheric delay to water vapor estimates, analyses of errors, and combinations of GNSS with other sources to enhance water vapor information. Moreover, the use of these data in different kinds of studies is discussed. For instance, the GNSS technique is commonly used as a reference tool for validating other water vapor products (e.g., radiosounding, radiometers onboard satellite platforms or ground-based instruments). Additionally, GNSS retrievals are largely used in order to determine the high spatio-temporal variability and long-term trends of atmospheric water vapor or in models with the goal of determining its notable influence on the climate system (e.g., assimilation in numerical prediction, as input to radiative transfer models, study of circulation patterns, etc.

Abstract:Atmospheric water vapor plays an essential role in climate change and weather forecasting. However, monitoring water vapor with high spatial and temporal resolutions remains a challenge, especially over ocean regions where observations are insufficient. Shipborne global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) contribute to enriching water vapor measurements over oceans and also can help validate satellite observations. Due to the lack of long-time serial observations, the performance of shipborne GNSS-derived precipitable water vapor (PWV) is inadequately evaluated on the global ocean scale. In this study, an overall assessment of shipborne GNSS PWV over global oceans is performed based on six voyages from 2014 to 2018. In coastal areas, the PWV differences of shipborne GNSS with respect to (w.r.t.) ground-based GNSS and ground-launched radiosonde data are 2.64 and 2.85 mm in the root mean square (rms), respectively. In open oceans, compared to ship-launched radiosonde profiles and satellite measurements, shipborne GNSS PWV shows the rms of differences of 2.54 and 2.53 mm, respectively. In addition, the rms of PWV differences between the whole track of shipborne GNSS PWV and National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Climate Forecast System Version 2 (CFSv2) products is 2.96 mm. The intertechnique validations demonstrate that the accuracy of shipborne GNSS PWV is superior to 3 mm, which meets the requirements of climate research and numerical weather prediction (NWP).

Integrated Application of Spatial Information Technologies in Atmospheric Water Vapor Retrieval and Simulation

Abstract:This paper compares the water vapor retrieved from MODIS with GPS PWV in Kansas State and Oklahoma State of USA between July and August 2009, discovering that the MODIS PWV changes consistently with GPS PWV but is systematically lower than GPS PWV. Based on the significant linear regression relationship of MODIS PWV and GPS PWV, an integrated retrieval model is established, which can be used to improve the retrieval precision of MODIS PWV. Then interpolation models in GIS technology are discussed for water vapor simulation at the time there exist no MODIS data. The research shows that the integrated application of spatial information technologies improves the precision, spatial and temporal resolution of water vapor retrieval.
Validating HY-2A CMR precipitable water vapor using ground-based and shipborne GNSS observations

Abstract:Abstract. The calibration microwave radiometer (CMR) on board the Haiyang-2A (HY-2A) satellite provides wet tropospheric delay correction for altimetry data, which can also contribute to the understanding of climate system and weather processes. The ground-based global navigation satellite system (GNSS) provides precise precipitable water vapor (PWV) with high temporal resolution and could be used for calibration and monitoring of the CMR data, and shipborne GNSS provides accurate PWV over open oceans, which can be directly compared with uncontaminated CMR data. In this study, the HY-2A CMR water vapor product is validated using ground-based GNSS observations of 100 International GNSS Service (IGS) stations along the global coastline and 56 d shipborne GNSS observations over the Indian Ocean. The processing strategy for GNSS data and CMR data is discussed in detail. Special efforts were made in the quality control and reconstruction of contaminated CMR data. The validation result shows that HY-2A CMR PWV agrees well with ground-based GNSS PWV with 2.67 mm as the root mean square (rms) within 100 km. Geographically, the rms is 1.12 mm in the polar region and 2.78 mm elsewhere. The PWV agreement between HY-2A and shipborne GNSS shows a significant correlation with the distance between the ship and the satellite footprint, with an rms of 1.57 mm for the distance threshold of 100 km. Ground-based GNSS and shipborne GNSS agree with HY-2A CMR well.

Abstract:The amplification of global warming because of the feedbacks associated with the increase in atmospheric moisture and the decrease in sea ice and snow cover in the Arctic is currently the focus of scientists, policy makers and society. The amplification of global warming is the response to increases in precipitation originally caused by climate change. Arctic predominant increases in specific humidity and precipitation have been documented by observations. In comparison, evapotranspiration in the Arctic is poorly known, in part, because the spatial and temporal sparsity of accurate in situ and remote sensing observations. Although more than 20 observations sites in the Arctic are available, where AERONET sun photometer integrated water vapor (IWV) measurements have been conducted, that information have been barely used. Here, we present a comparison of IWV observations from radiosondes and AERONET sun photometers at ten sites located across the Arctic with the goal to document the feasibility of that set of observations to contribute to the ongoing and future research on polar regions. Sun photometer IWV observations are averaged for three-time windows; 30 min, 6 and 24 h. The predominant dry bias of AERONET IWV observations with respect to radiosondes, identified at tropical and midlatitudes, is also present in the Arctic. The statistics of the comparison show robust results at eight of the ten sites, with precision and accuracy magnitudes below 8 and 2% respectively. The possible causes of the less robust results at the other two sites are discussed. In addition, the impact of selecting other temporal coincidence windows in the average sun photometer IWV used in the comparison were tested. Auto-correlation in diurnal sun photometer IWV could produce appreciable bias in the statistics used for the comparison. We suggest using only one pair of values per day, consisting in the daily mean IWV sun photometer and the IWV radiosonde observation value. This feature should be valid also for comparison of IWV from sun photometer and other instruments. Maximum 10% error level of IWV from sun photometer observations, when compared with radiosondes, have been found for the Arctic. It is in the same order of magnitude than at tropical and middle latitudes locations. It has been demonstrated the feasibility of AERONET IWV observations in the Arctic for research on this variable. AERONET standard instruments and its centralized-standard processing algorithm allow its IWV observations to be considered a relative standard dataset for the re-calibration of other instrumental IWV observations assuming radiosondes as the absolute standard dataset.

Abstract:A technique is presented for deriving tropospheric water vapor and cloud liquid water, as well as temperature, from a suite of ground-based sensors. Included in the suite are a dual-channel microwave radiometer, a ceilometer, a radio acoustic sounding system (RASS), and conventional surface meteorological instruments. A linear statistical inversion algorithm, combined with a data classification technique, is applied to retrieve water vapor and cloud liquid water profiles. The linear statistical inversion algorithm is also applied to derive temperature profiles from RASS virtual temperature measurements and surface meteorological parameters. A physical retrieval algorithm is then applied to retrieve integrated water vapor and liquid water. Finally, these two algorithms are coupled in a two-step iteration process. The technique is evaluated by comparing retrieved quantities with radiosonde measurements and by comparing this technique with the traditional technique based solely on dual-channel microwave radiometric measurements. Significant improvement is achieved in retrieving dominant structures in the water vapor profile when liquid clouds are present. This evaluation also predicts significant improvement in measuring integrated liquid water, but lack of ground truth prevented experimental verification.
Comparison of Water Vapor Content Product Retrieved by CE-318 Sun-photometer, Radiosonde Data and MODIS Near Infrared Data

Abstract:Atmospheric water vapor content is an important parameter for quantitative remote sensing. In this paper, the CE-318 sun-photometer was mounted on top of our building in Nanning, South China to measure the solar irradiance in the pre-set wavelength, i.e. 440 nm, 670 nm, 870 nm, 936 nm and 1020 nm for retrieval of atmospheric water vapor or perceptible water (PW) during June 2014 to May 2016. After calibration, the solar irradiance measurements from the CE-318 Sun-photometer were used to retrieve the atmospheric water vapor (CE-318 PW) for systematical analysis of its seasonal variation during the measuring period. Comparison has been made to correlate CE-318 PW with the radiosonde data and MODIS near infrared water vapor products. The results showed that: (1) the retrieved CE-318 PW in Nanning is characterized with remarkable seasonal variation. High values (4~6 g/cm2) of the PW were observed in summer. As a contrast, the PW was observed to be relatively low (usually ~2 g/cm2) in winter. This is mainly attributed to the performance of subtropical monsoon in the region. In summer, the monsoon performs actively, making the atmosphere to be wet and hot. In winter, performance of the monsoon becomes weak, leading to a relatively dry atmosphere dominating the region. (2) Good correlation was found between CE-318 PW and the radiosonde data from meteoroidal station, with correlation coefficient of 0.877, average absolute deviation of 0.42 g/cm2 and average absolute relative deviation of 10.96%. But the precision of MOD05 PW was low, its average absolute error was 0.74 g/cm2 and the average relative error was 18.74%.
Inter-comparison of GNSS- IPWV with ERA-5 IPWV and monitoring of convective events over the Indian region

Abstract:The present study deals with (i) An Inter-comparison study of ground based Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) derived Integrated Precipitable Water Vapour (IPWV) with 5th generation global climate reanalysis data of European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecast (ERA-5) (ii) IPWV thresholds of GNSS data (iii) case studies of IPWV analysis. It is found that both the datasets (GNSS and ERA-5) are strongly correlated & the correlation coefficient ranging between 0.97 and 0.99. Monthly Thresholds of IPWV (MTI) are generated with 2017 -2020 data sets from Indian GNSS station having continuous data and found very useful input as value addition to know the possibility of building up /decaying of convection in day to day daily forecast issued to the public. Case studies shows an increase of IPWV, 3 to 4 hour prior to the occurrence of convective event around the GNSS station and found very useful for nowcasting. Therefore, utilization of IPWV (model as wells GNSS based) have incremented value in enriching the understanding about the weather event and its forecasting. This supplement information along with other analysis products (model, surface, upper air, satellite or radar etc) can support further in appropriate decision making to the forecasters, decision makers and the end users of the society.

A New NDSA (Normalized Differential Spectral Attenuation) Measurement Campaign for Estimating Water Vapor Along a Radio Link

Abstract:The Normalized Differential Spectral Attenuation (NDSA) technique was proposed years ago as an active method for measuring integrated water vapor (IWV) along a Ku/K-band radio link immersed (totally or partially) in the troposphere. The approach is of the active kind, as it relies on the transmission of a couple of sinusoidal signals, whose power is measured at the receiver, thus providing the differential attenuation measurements from which IWV estimates can be in turn derived. In 2018, a prototype instrument providing such differential attenuation measurements was completed and set up for a first measurement campaign aimed at demonstrating the NDSA method. By the end of June 2022, the instrument was profoundly modified and upgraded so that a second measurement campaign could be carried out from 1 August to 30 November 2022. The transmitter was placed on the top of Monte Gomito (44.1277°lat, 10.6434°lon, 1892 m a.s.l.) and the receiver on the roof of the Department of Information Engineering of the University of Florence (43.7985°lat, 11.2528°lon, 50 m a.s.l.). The resulting radio link length was 61.15 km. Four ground weather stations of the regional weather service were selected among those available. In this paper, we describe the upgraded instrument and present the outcomes of the new measurement campaign, whose purpose was mainly to compare the IWV estimates provided by the instrument with the ground sensor measurements of air temperature, air humidity, barometric pressure, and rainfall. In particular, we show that the temporal trends of the two IWV estimates are qualitatively consistent, and that the instrument is able to provide IWV estimates also in the presence of fog and rainfall. Conversely, a quantitative evaluation through comparison with IWV data from point weather station measurements appears challenging due to the significant spatial variability in temperature and relative humidity, even between couples of stations that are quite close to each other.

Abstract:The global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) water vapor tomography technique has been successfully used as a promising tool for sensing atmospheric water vapor and applied to weather forecasting in recent years. In most tomography models, the single grid resolution, i.e., the same horizontal resolution, is widely adopted to divide the 3-D tomographic domain into many small voxels. However, the single-resolution GNSS tomography (SRGT) method implements the grid-based parametrization of the physical domain and does not follow the vertical spatial heterogeneity of atmospheric water vapor. To this end, we develop a new multi-resolution GNSS tomography (MRGT) method that incorporates the vertical decline tendency of water vapor. The MRGT method generates different-resolution tomographic water vapor products in the lower, middle, and upper domains of the troposphere. Besides, a new indicator, known as the integrated water vapor (IWV) lapse rate, is introduced to determine the appropriate nonuniform stratification strategy. Eight tomography schemes were analyzed to compare the tomography results obtained from different tomography models based on the GNSS data in the Hong Kong region during June and July 2015. The results show that with respect to radiosonde data, the MGRT method reconstructs a more accurate water vapor distribution than the SRGT approach, with the average root mean square error of tomographic results reduced by 12%. Moreover, in rainfall conditions, the tomographic water vapor profiles from the MGRT model agree well with the radiosonde profiles, which highlights the potential of multi-resolution tomographic water vapor products for rainfall-related studies.

Abstract:Water vapor plays a vital role in the development of heavy rainfall system. The "21.7" Henan rainfall event, a record-breaking event, was investigated from the perspective of water vapor based on in-situ measurements, namely the 220 continuously operating GNSS ground stations in Henan Province, with GNSS tomography technique. Results showed that during and after the heavy rainfall, the error RMS of water vapor density from tomography was 21% lower than that of GFS prediction data at the height of about 1450 m by comparing with radiosonde data. Taking ERA5 as the reference, the average relative error of tomographic water vapor density at the height below 4 km was within 10% before and during the rainfall. The analyses of spatiotemporal variations of water vapor illustrated that tomographic products can, compared to ERA5 reanalysis data, more distinctly reflect the formation and convergence process of low-level water vapor bands before the occurrence of the extreme rainfall, as well as the fracture of the water vapor bands before the end of the rainfall. By combining the tomographic water vapor and GFS wind field data, the water vapor flux divergence can be calculated to further elucidate the movement of water vapor where significant variations of water vapor at the height of 10 to12 km (near the tropopause) and 1 to 4 km in both the vertical and horizontal directions were found before the extreme precipitation.

Abstract:This objective of this paper is to estimate atmospheric water vapor (wv) from the latest Landsat 8 Thermal InfRared Sensor (TIRS) image by using a new modified split-window covariance-variance ratio (MSWCVR) method. Model analysis showed that the MSWCVR method can theoretically retrieve wv with an accuracy better than 0.45 g/cm2 for most atmospheric moisture conditions. The MSWCVR was evaluated by using AERONET ground-measured data and cross-compared with MODIS products in 2013 at forty two ground sites, and results presented that the retrieved wv from TIRS data was highly correlated with but generally larger (about 1.0 g/cm2) than two others. The reasons for this uncertainty were mainly ascribed to data systematic noise and radiative calibration error. Future work must pay more attention to the data quality and radiative calibration of Landsat 8 TIRS data.

Abstract:The revitalized Russian GLONASS system provides new potential for real-time retrieval of zenith tropospheric delays (ZTD) and precipitable water vapor (PWV) in order to support time-critical meteorological applications such as nowcasting or severe weather event monitoring. In this study, we develop a method of real-time ZTD/PWV retrieval based on GLONASS and/or GPS observations. The performance of ZTD and PWV derived from GLONASS data using real-time precise point positioning (PPP) technique is carefully investigated and evaluated. The potential of combining GLONASS and GPS data for ZTD/PWV retrieving is assessed as well. The GLONASS and GPS observations of about half a year for 80 globally distributed stations from the IGS (International GNSS Service) network are processed. The results show that the real-time GLONASS ZTD series agree quite well with the GPS ZTD series in general: the RMS of ZTD differences is about 8 mm (about 1.2 mm in PWV). Furthermore, for an inter-technique validation, the real-time ZTD estimated from GLONASS-only, GPS-only, and the GPS/GLONASS combined solutions are compared with those derived from very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) at colocated GNSS/VLBI stations. The comparison shows that GLONASS can contribute to real-time meteorological applications, with almost the same accuracy as GPS. More accurate and reliable water vapor values, about 1.5–2.3 mm in PWV, can be achieved when GLONASS observations are combined with the GPS ones in the real-time PPP data processing. The comparison with radiosonde data further confirms the performance of GLONASS-derived real-time PWV and the benefit of adding GLONASS to stand-alone GPS processing.

Abstract:We describe here a new algorithm to model the water contents of the atmosphere from GNSS slant wet delays relative to a single receiver. We first make the assumption that the water vapor contents are mainly governed by a scale height (exponential law), and secondly that the departures from this decaying exponential can be mapped as a set of low degree 3D Zernike functions (w.r.t. space) and Tchebyshev polynomials (w.r.t. time.) We give an example of inversion with data acquired over a one day time span at the Geodesy Observatory of Tahiti.

Abstract:Comparison of data on the tropospheric moisture content derived from results of GPS monitoring, radio sounding, and measurements with a water vapor radiometer (WVR) at IRKM (Irkutsk, 52°13′ N, 104°19′ E, h = 511 m) and BADG (Badary, 51°46′ N, 102°14′ E, h = 838 m) permanent observation sites is performed. Values of the total zenith tropospheric delay for the BADG point obtained as a result of processing primary GPS data by GAMIT and Bernese software packages, as well as time series of the tropospheric moisture content at the IRKM site derived from GPS observations and radio sounding data, and at the BADG site, from GPS observations and WVR measurements during 2020 are compared. Justification of using the GPS method for obtaining continuous data on the tropospheric moisture content from the network created in the Baikal region is presented.
