Abstract:Tin oxide (SnO2) is an attractive anode in lithium ion batteries (LIBs), but its applications have been significantly hampered by the huge volume change during the electrochemical cycling. In this work we demonstrate a rational design of crystalline SnO2@amorphous TiO2 core-shell nanostructures, where the crystalline SnO2 core was synthesized by a hydrothermal method and the amorphous TiO2 shell was deposited by atomic layer deposition. The SnO2@TiO2 nanostructures deliver excellent performances during the electrochemical process, having a high reversible capacity of 1259 mAh g(-1) at cycling rate of 80 mA g(-1), which is still up to 703 mAh g(-1) after 50 cycles. The acceptable rate capacity is also revealed with 412 mAh g(-1) at 400mA g(-1). The coulombic efficiency is stable at around 100% regardless of cycling rates and numbers. The electrochemical performances of the SnO2@TiO2 batteries are better than those of the SnO2 ones without TiO2 coating. In the SnO2@TiO2 nanostructures, the amorphous TiO2 shell layer can experience an isotropic stress, having the ability to evidently reduce the volume change, lattice stress and so the risk of fracture during the cycling process, which is responsible for their outstanding behaviors. The strategy provided in our study is expected to be a precious guideline for designing an ideal electrode for energy storage devices. (c) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Hierarchical Nanosheet-Constructed Yolk-Shell TiO₂ Porous Microspheres for Lithium Batteries with High Capacity, Superior Rate and Long Cycle Capability.

Abstract:A hierarchical nanosheet-constructed yolk-shell TiO2 (NYTiO2) porous microsphere is synthesized through a well-designed, one-pot, template-free solvothermal alcoholysis process using tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) as the structure directing reagent. Such a yolk-shell structure with a highly porous shell and dense mesoporous core is quite advantageous as an anode material for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). The outer, 2D nanosheet-based porous (15 nm) shell and the nanocrystal-based inner mesoporous (3 nm) core provide a stable, porous framework, effective grain boundaries and a short diffusion pathway for Li+ and electron transport, facilitating lithium insertion/extraction. The voids between the core and the shell can not only store the electrolyte due to capillary and facilitate charge transfer across the electrode/electrolyte interface but also buffer the volume change during the Li+ insertion/extraction. As a result, NYTiO2 demonstrates excellent Li+ capacity with outstanding cycle performance and superior rate capability at different rates for >700 cycles, retaining a 225 mA h g(-1) reversible capacity after 100 cycles at 1 C. In particular, the reversible capacity can still be maintained at 113 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles at 10 C. We also observe the formation of homogeneously distributed 5-10 nm Li2Ti2O4 nanocrystallites on the surface of the nanosheets during the discharge-charge process. The synergy of the yolk-shell structure with dual mesopores in the shell and core and the Li2Ti2O4 nanocrystallites endow the hierarchical NYTiO2 with high reversible capacity, excellent rate capability and outstanding cycle performance.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are promising energy storage devices for portable electronics, electric vehicles and power-grid applications. It is highly desirable yet challenging to develop a simple and scalable method for constructions of sustainable materials for fast and safe LIBs. Herein, we exploit a novel and scalable route to synthesize ultrathin nanobelts of anatase TiO 2 , which is resource abundant and is eligible for safe anodes in LIBs. The achieved ultrathin nanobelts demonstrate outstanding performances for lithium storage because of the unique nanoarchitecture and appropriate composition. Unlike conventional alkali-hydrothermal approaches to hydrogen titanates, the present room temperature alkaline-free wet chemistry strategy guarantees the ultrathin thickness for the resultant titanate nanobelts. The anatase TiO 2 ultrathin nanobelts were achieved simply by a subsequent calcination in air. The synthesis route is convenient for metal decoration and also for fabricating thin films of one/three dimensional arrays on various substrates at low temperatures, in absence of any seed layers.
2D Black TiO2-x Nanoplate-Decorated Ti3C2 MXene Hybrids for Ultrafast and Elevated Stable Lithium Storage

Abstract:Novel 2D black TiO2-x nanoplate-decorated Ti3C2 MXene (TiO2-x/Ti3C2) hybrids were rationally designed and prepared by a facile wet process. The MXene nanosheets, serving as the carriers, not only enable the rapid electron and ion transport at the interface, but also avoid the aggregation of TiO2-x nanoplate during lithiation and de-lithiation. On the other hand, the presence of TiO2-x nanoplate also acts as the spacer to avert the MXene nanosheets from severe restacking. The successful formation of TiO2-x/Ti3C2 were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron spectroscopy (SEM), transmission electron spectroscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). When served as anodes in lithium ion batteries (LIBs), the resulting TiO2-x/Ti3C2 hybrid electrode delivers high specific capacity of 131 mA h g(-1) even cycling at a high current density of 5 A g(-1) (17 C) for 500 times and superior rate capability (even at a current density of 34 C, the specific capacity still remains at 115 mA h g(-1)), which highlight its great promise in the fields of energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:Ti3C2 MXene-based composites are emerging two-dimensional (2D) layered materials promising in electrochemical energy storage devices such as rechargeable ion batteries and supercapacitors. However, scalable preparation of Ti3C2 MXene-based composites, especially, integrated with one-dimensional (1D) materials through a facile low-temperature strategy remains a considerable challenge. Herein, novel sandwich-like Na0.23TiO2/Ti3C2 composites made of 1D amorphous Na0.23TiO2 nanobelts growing on 2D Ti3C2 nanosheets have been prepared through a one-step scalable transformation reaction of Ti3C2 MXene. The sandwich-like Na0.23TiO2/Ti3C2 composites comprising of 1D ultrathin nanobelts, 2D conductive nanosheets and 3D sandwich-like architecture with electrically connecting interfaces inside can effectively relieve strain of the electrode upon cycling, facilitate carrier transport dynamics and protect aggregation of the electrode material, favorable for high-performance rechargeable batteries. As a result, when employed as anodes in Li/Na-ion batteries, the Na0.23TiO2/Ti3C2 electrodes exhibit superior long cycling stability (up to 4000 cycles at the high rates with respective capacity retention of over or nearly 100%), and remarkable rate capability. This work may open a new way for scalable synthesis of 2D layered MXene-based composites with desired architectures and properties for practical energy applications.
Open-Structured Oxyfluorinated Titanium Phosphate Nanosheets Synthesized with the Assistance of an Ionic Liquid and Their Use as an Anode in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Two-dimensional Ti2(PO4)2F nanosheets were synthesized with an ionic liquid (IL) containing PF6 ([Bmim]PF6) via a hydrothermal method. In comparison, only anatase titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles were obtained when changing the type of anion ([Bmim]Br or [Bmim]BF4) under the same conditions, suggesting that the anion type could greatly affect the crystalline phase, particle size, specific surface, and morphology of the final products; two-dimensional nanosheets were obtained in [Bmim]PF6, whereas nanocrystals with a relatively large surface were formed in the latter two ILs, as revealed by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen gas sorption, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy measurements. 1H and 19F nuclear magnetic resonance examinations of the fresh and recycled ILs suggest that the IL with the PF6 anion experienced complete hydrolysis, which could be the key factor for the formation of such unique Ti2(PO4)2F nanosheets. The electrochemical performances of such Ti2(PO4)2F nanosheets were evaluated as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in comparison to TiO2 nanomaterials. The rate capability and cycling performance of the Ti2(PO4)2F electrode outperformed the other two electrodes studied, as illustrated by cyclic voltammetry curves, charge/discharge behavior, and long cycling test, which is mainly due its unique layered structure and low surface area, which resulted in low volume change. The Ti2(PO4)2F electrode derived from [Bmim]PF6 displays a steady reversible capacity of 170 mAh/g and high cycling stability with over 70% capacity retention after 100 cycles. Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is of great interest as anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of its safety, structure stability, and low cost. However, the limitations of low conductivity and small theoretical capacity prevent its further applications. Herein, TiO2 nanospheres with a hollow structure (H-TiO2) were successfully synthesized via a hard-template method. The resultant material used as LIBs anode with superior lithium storage properties in terms of high initial capacity (∼289 mA h g−1 at 0.1 A g−1), good rate capability (∼101 mA h g−1 at 2 A g−1), and excellent cycling stability (∼196 mA h g−1 was retained over 300 cycles at 0.1 A g−1). The improved performances are attributed to the large specific area (~225 m2 g−1) and abundant mesoporous of the hollow structure, which can not only promote the diffusion of Li+ and e− but also achieve an increase in the contact area between electrodes and electrolyte.

Abstract:Lithium titanate exhibits effective suppression of lithium metal plating and lithium dendrite formation, attributed to its high lithium ion diffusion coefficient and a relatively high discharge plateau of 1.55V (vs. Li + /Li). It is considered a zero-strain material, displaying minimal lattice size changes during lithium intercalation and deintercalation processes. The focus of this study was to obtain titanium dioxide through the calcination of selected MXene (Ti 2 C), and then mix it with lithium carbonate in a specific lithium-titanium ratio to generate lithium titanate. Spinel lithium titanate synthesized via solid-state method retained the sheet-like structure and excellent conductivity characteristics of MXene. Because its sheet structure provides a larger specific surface area for the electrode and enhances ion migration, it shows excellent electrochemical performance. The reaction mechanism was studied by in-situ Raman and variable speed CV. It was found that the reaction mechanism was pseudocapacitance plus lithium ion deintercalation. The obtained structure exhibited excellent electrochemical performance, making it suitable for applications in lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) MXenes become the predominant choice of lithium-ion battery electrode materials owing to large surface-area-to-volume ratio and metallic conductivity, but severe restacking still remains the main obstruct. Herein, a new strategy of avoiding restacking and assuring structural stability is proposed. We demonstrate the fabrication of novel hierarchically porous and robust 2D/2D hybrid architectures consisting of a large thin Ti3C2 flake with many standing intersecting TiO2 nanosheets, followed by generation of well-dispersed Li3Ti2(PO4)3 nanocrystals. The resulting TiO2 sheets of 4 ~ 5 nm thick inherit specific layered atomic structures of 2D MXene through in-situ ultrafast reactions in molten-salt, and thus are composed of few layers with ~ 0.8 nm layer spacing. The MXene-based composite as an anode delivers high discharge capacity of 204 mAh g−1 at 50 mA g−1, rate capability (115 mAh g−1 at 1000 mA g−1) and remarkable cycling stability with 193 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles at 100 mA g−1. This are attributed to high surface capacitive contributions of the unique 2D/2D robust hybrid architecture that provides enough spaces to accelerate ionic transfer and favorable tolerance to volume variation. This work provides an effective route to rapid generation of MXene-based 2D/2D hierarchical composites for many applications.

Abstract:Uniform TiO2 nanospheres from hollow, core-shell and mesoporous structures have been synthesized using quasi-nano-sized carbonaceous spheres as templates. The TiO2 nanospheres formed after calcination at 400 °C are composed of ∼7 nm nanoparticles and the shells of the hollow TiO2 nanospheres are as thin as a single layer of nanoparticles. The ultrafine nanoparticles endow the hollow and mesoporous TiO2 nanospheres with short lithium ion diffusion paths leading to high discharge specific capacities of 211.9 and 196.0 mA h g-1 at a current rate of 1 C (167.5 mA g-1) after 100 cycles, and especially superior discharge specific capacities of 125.9 and 113.4 mA h g-1 at a high current rate of up to 20 C. The hollow and mesoporous TiO2 nanospheres also show superior cycling stability with long-term discharge capacities of 103.0 and 110.2 mA h g-1, respectively, even after 3000 cycles at a current rate of 20 C.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) material Ti3C2 MXenes have recently been used in electrode composites for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) for their excellent electrical conductivity and accordion-like nanosheet morphology. However, Ti3C2 has low specific capacity and fast degradation rate upon cycling after inevitably coupling with surface species during synthesis. In this work, Ti3C2 is used as Ti-source for Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) and C-source for carbon quantum dots (CQDs) in a one-step hydrothermal process. The resultant LTO product (M-LTO) inherits the nanosheet morphology of Ti3C2 with uniformly anchored CQDs. The highly electronic conductive CQDs optimize the transmission path of ions which reduces the diffusion barrier of ions, and they further increase the density of states of the material which effectively improving the conductivity of M-LTO. Remarkable electrochemical performances including high initial specific capacity, long lifetime and excellent low temperature capacity are demonstrated for this type of electrode in LIBs, sodium ion batteries (SIBs) and lithium-magnesium ion hybrid batteries (LMIHBs). This paper offers a new strategy to the rapidly expanding research on the application of transition metal MXenes in electrodes for metal-ion batteries.

In-situ synthesis of niobium-doped TiO2 nanosheet arrays on double transition metal MXene (TiNbCTx) as stable anode material for lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:Two-dimensional layered MXene material with high conductivity and good mechanical flexibility has gained wide attention in the field of energy storage. However, the practical application of MXene was hampered by its limited specific capacity and the unstable structure. Herein, a composite of in-situ grown niobium-doped TiO2 nanosheet arrays on a double transition metal MXene TiNbCTx (TiNbC@NTO) was successfully obtained via a hydrothermal pretreatment followed by in-situ partial oxidation strategy. The prepared TiNbC@NTO combines multiple advantages of both MXene and oxide, including high conductivity derived from the unoxidized MXene TiNbCTx, superior structure stability from the in-situ produced oxide between the MXene layers, which prevents structural collapse and restacking during charging and discharging, and the large layer space which promotes lithium-ion transport. The degree of oxidation of MXene can be adjusted by controlling the reaction temperature, and the oxide nonosheet turn dense with the increase of the temperature. All the oxidized MXenes show improved electrochemical performance compared with the pure TiNbCTx, and the TiNbC@NTO-500 with the appropriate degree of oxidation exhibits the highest reversible capacity, best cycling stability of 261 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at 1.0 A g-1 among all the as-prepared composites. Furthermore, an extraordinary rate performance (148.5 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1) was obtained based on the pseudocapacitance dominated mechanism. This work provides a new insight into improving the performance of MXene-based anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been widely used as an alternative anodic material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its ultrahigh capacity retention and long cycle lifespan. However, the restriction of lithium insertion, intrinsically poor electronic conductivity, and sluggish lithium ionic kinetics of bulk TiO2 hinder their specific capacity and rate performance. Herein, LiTiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) are synthesized via a facile ball milling method by the reaction of anatase TiO2 with LiH. The as-prepared LiTiO2 NPs have strong structural stability and a "zero strain" effect during the repeated intercalation/deintercalation, even at low potential. As anodic materials for LIBs, LiTiO2 NPs exhibit a superior rate performance of similar to 100 mA h g(-1) at 10C (3350 mA g(-1)) with a capacity retention of 100% after 1000 cycles, which is 5 times higher than that of the original commercial anatase TiO2 powder. The higher specific capacity of LiTiO2 NPs is attributed to the increased conversion of Ti3+ to Ti2+ on the porous surface of LiTiO2 NPs, which provides a more capacitive contribution. This study not only provides a new fabrication approach toward Ti-based anodes for ultrafast LIBs but also underscores the potential importance of embedding lithium into transition metal oxides as a strategy for boosting their electrochemical performance.
Simple Synthesis Of A Double-Shell Hollow Structured Mno2@Tio2 Composite As An Anode Material For Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:A double-shell hollow structured MnO2@TiO2 anode material has been successfully synthesized through a two-step template method. The monodispersed carbon spheres synthesized through a hydrothermal method act as the templates. The inner part of the carbon template acts as a sacrificial template to form the void and the outer part of it plays the role of self-template to synthesize hollow MnO2 spheres. The composition, crystallinity, morphology, and valence state of the final product MnO2@TiO2 are characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electrochemical performances of the double-shell hollow structured MnO2@TiO2 anode material have been comprehensively improved. The specific capacity of the composite retains 802 mA h g(-1) at the current rate of 200 mA g(-1) after 200 cycles, and it can still retain about 400 mA h g(-1) at a higher current rate of 1 A g(-1). Finally, a more detailed charging/discharging process of MnO2 is proposed.

Abstract:The delicate control over materials at the nanoscale needs well command over both structures and surface compositions, thereby imparting enhanced performance. Herein, we developed an effective and scalable way for the construction of 2D mesoporous TiO 2 nanosheets by using graphene oxides as sacrifice templates. The combination of 2D morphologies and porous structures, can effectively increase the inaccessible surface areas, shorten the ion diffusion path and facilitating the lithium-ion mobility. Moreover, the surface composition of mesoporous TiO 2 nanosheets can be rationally tuned through a facile second annealing method, resulting a stable interface between electrodes and electrolyte. Facile Molten Salt Synthesis of Carbon-anchored TiN Nanoparticles for Durable High-rate Lithium-ion Battery Anodes

Abstract:Transition metal nitrides including titanium nitride (TiN) exhibit remarkable application prospects as anodes for durable high-rate lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Regrettably, the absence of simple synthesis methods restricts their further developments. Herein, a facile and low-cost molten salt synthesis strategy was proposed to prepare carbon-anchored TiN nanoparticles as an advanced anode material for LIBs with high rate capabilities. This nanosized TiN obtained is ~5 nm in size and well-distributed onto carbon plates, which could release a reversible capacity of ~381.5 mAh·g-1 at 0.1 A·g-1 after 250 cycles and ~141.5 mAh·g-1 at 1.0 A·g-1 after 1000 cycles. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the conversion reaction between TiN and Li-ions has happened during the electrochemical reaction process, resulting in the formation of Li3N and Ti. This unique microstructure attributed from TiN nanoparticles anchored by carbon could support the structural volume during cycling. This work highlights the method superiority of TiN prepared via a molten salt synthesis strategy as an anode for LIBs with impressive rate performances.
Facile Synthesis of 3D Few-Layered MoS2coated TiO2nanosheet Core–shell Nanostructures for Stable and High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Uniform transition metal sulfide deposition on a smooth TiO2 surface to form a coating structure is a well-known challenge, caused mainly due to their poor affinities. Herein, we report a facile strategy for fabricating mesoporous 3D few-layered (<4 layers) MoS2 coated TiO2 nanosheet core-shell nanocomposites (denoted as 3D FL-MoS2@TiO2) by a novel two-step method using a smooth TiO2 nanosheet as a template and glucose as a binder. The core-shell structure has been systematically examined and corroborated by transmission electron microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses. It is found that the resultant 3D FL-MoS2@TiO2 as a lithium-ion battery anode delivers an outstanding high-rate capability with an excellent cycling performance, relating to the unique structure of 3D FL-MoS2@TiO2. The 3D uniform coverage of few-layered (<4 layers) MoS2 onto the TiO2 can remarkably enhance the structure stability and effectively shortens the transfer paths of both lithium ions and electrons, while the strong synergistic effect between MoS2 and TiO2 can significantly facilitate the transport of ions and electrons across the interfaces, especially in the high-rate charge-discharge process. Moreover, the facile fabrication strategy can be easily extended to design other oxide/carbon-sulfide/oxide core-shell materials for extensive applications.
A facile preparation of submicro-sized Ti2AlC precursor toward Ti2CTx MXene for lithium storage

Abstract:MXenes, a new class of two-dimensional (2D) materials, have drawn special attention as potential anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in the last decade. However, the productization is primarily restricted by the scalable preparation of their parent MAX phases. Moreover, decreasing the particle size of the precursor powder could dramatically enhance the etching efficience. Furthermore, the fine-grained MAX phases are beneficial for improving the electrochemical performance of MXenes. Therefore, herein we report a facile and high-efficiency method to synthesize submicron-sized Ti2AlC powder in molten (Na,K)Cl in large quantities. As a result, Ti2CTx MXene powder was attained by almost complete removal of Al layer from the above precursor in 8% HF solution for 2 h at room temperature. The as-prepared Ti2CTx MXene exhibited superior performance as an anode material for LIBs with a sustainable discharge capacity of ∼260 mAh‧g − 1 at 100 mA‧g − 1 in 120 cycles and a discharge capacity of 216 mAh‧g − 1 at 500 mA‧g − 1 with an excellent capacity retention of 96.13% after 540 cycles. The prominent performance of Ti2CTx as an anode material for LIBs is due to the introduction of high-density surface functional groups during etching of the submicron-sized Ti2AlC and enhanced density of edges, which provide more effective adsorption sites for Li ions.

Abstract:This paper embarks upon three levels of undertaking ranging from nanomaterials synthesis to assembly and functionalization. First, we have prepared size-tunable anatase TiO(2) nanospindles via a hydrothermal process by using tubular titanates as self-sacrificing precursors. Second, we have densely dispersed the TiO(2) nanospindles onto functional graphene oxides (GO) via a spontaneous self-assembly process. After annealing of the TiO(2)/GO hybrid nanocomposite in an NH(3) gas flow, the TiO(2) surface was effectively nitridated and the GO was reduced to graphene sheets (GS) in order to further fortify the electronic functionality of the nanocomposite. Third, the anatase@oxynitride/titanium nitride-GS (TiO(2)@TiO(x)N(y)/TiN-GS) hybrid nanocomposite was studied as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), showing excellent rate capability and cycling performance compared to the pure TiO(2) nanospindles. Our systematic studies have revealed that the TiO(2)@TiO(x)N(y)/TiN-GS nanocomposites with graphene nanosheets covered with the TiO(2)@TiO(x)N(y)/TiN nanospindles on both sides provide a promising solution to the problems of poor electron transport and severe aggregation of TiO(2) nanoparticles by enhancing both electron transport through the conductive matrix and Li-ion accessibility to the active material from the liquid electrolyte. More generally, the size-tunable TiO(2) nanospindles with their unique (101) outer surface planes provide an archetype for the in depth investigation of their surface-specific and size-dependent physicochemical properties.

Abstract:As promising, safe, high-power electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), titanium-dioxide-based anodes that have been prepared to date are still restricted by their limited specific capacity. In this work, we demonstrate a facile electrochemical anodization for TiOx nanotubular arrays of oxygen defects in a nitrogen atmosphere. In comparison with those fabricated under air conditions, the as-prepared nanotubular arrays present much reduced impedance with oxygen defects, which allow fast electronic and ionic transport in the TiOx nanotubular arrays. The binder-free anode based on as-prepared TiOx nanotubular arrays exhibited record-setting capacities (395, 325, and 235 mAh g(-1) at 0.2, 1, and 10C, respectively) among TiO2-based anode materials, that is, approaching state-of-the-art TiO2 electrodes for LIBs.
