Abstract:Mirror Stars are a generic prediction of dissipative dark matter models, including minimal atomic dark matter and twin baryons in the Mirror Twin Higgs. Mirror Stars can capture regular matter from the interstellar medium through extremely suppressed kinetic mixing interactions between the regular and the dark photon. This accumulated "nugget" will draw heat from the mirror star core and emit highly characteristic X-ray and optical signals. In this work, we devise a general parameterization of mirror star nugget properties that is independent of the unknown details of mirror star stellar physics, and use the Cloudy spectral synthesis code to obtain realistic and comprehensive predictions for the thermal emissions from optically thin mirror star nuggets. We find that mirror star nuggets populate an extremely well-defined and narrow region of the HR diagram that only partially overlaps with the white dwarf population. Our detailed spectral predictions, which we make publicly available, allow us to demonstrate that optically thin nuggets can be clearly distinguished from white dwarf stars by their continuum spectrum shape, and from planetary nebulae and other optically thin standard sources by their highly exotic emission line ratios. Our work will enable realistic mirror star telescope searches, which may reveal the detailed nature of dark matter.

Abstract:Overwhelming astronomical evidence for dark matter and absence of any laboratory evidence for it despite many dedicated searches have fueled speculation that dark matter may reside in a parallel universe interacting with the familiar universe only via gravitational interactions as well as possibly via some ultra-weak forces. In this scenario, we postulate that the visible universe co-exists with a mirror world consisting of an identical duplicate of forces and matter of our world, obeying a mirror symmetry. This picture, motivated by particle physics considerations, not only provides a natural candidate for dark matter but also has the potential to explain the matter dark matter coincidence problem, i.e., why the dark matter content of the universe is only a few times the visible matter content. One requirement for mirror models is that the mirror world must be colder than our world to maintain the success of big bang nucleosynthesis. After a review of the basic features of the model, we present several new results: first is that the consistency between the coldness of the mirror world and the explanation of the matter dark matter coincidence implies an upper bound on the inflation reheat temperature of the universe to be around 106.5 GeV. We also argue that the coldness implies the mirror world consists mainly of mirror Helium and very little mirror hydrogen, which is the exact opposite of what we see in the visible world.

Abstract:There can exist a hidden sector of the Universe in the form of parallel ''mirror'' world which has the same particle physics as the observable world and interacts with the latter only gravitationally. Big Bang Nucleosynthesis bounds demand that the mirror sector should have a smaller temperature than the ordinary one. This implies that the mirror matter could play a role of dark matter, and in addition its chemical content should be dominated by helium. Here we study the evolutionary and structural properties of the mirror stars which essentially are similar to that of the ordinary stars but with higher helium contents. Being invisible in terms of photons, they could be observed only as MACHOs in the microlensing experiments. Using a numerical code, we compute evolution of stars with large helium abundances (Y = 0.30-0.80) and a wide range of masses, from 0.5 to 10 solar masses. We found that helium dominated mirror star should have much faster evolutionary time (up to a factor 30) than the ordinary star with the same mass. In addition, we show the diagrams of luminosities, effective temperatures, central temperatures and densities, and compute the masses of the He core at ignition and the minimum mass for carbon ignition, for different chemical compositions. The general conclusion is that mirror stars evolve faster as compared to ordinary ones, and explode earlier as type II supernovae, thus enriching the galactic halo of processed mirror gas with higher metallicity, with implications for MACHO observations and galaxy evolution.

Implications of direct detection experiments in search of mirror dark matter in Galaxy

Abstract:We explore the possibilities of the mirror dark sector and its potential discovery in present and future experiments. Certainly, the mirror dark matters are isomorphic to the standard model lives in the hidden dark sector, and can be investigated in direct detection experiments if kinetic mixing interaction with ordinary matter exists. In this work, we study mirror electrons and mirror nuclei dark matter kinetic mixing interactions with the germanium and xenon targets. We estimate an upper limit on kinetic mixing $\epsilon\leq 10^{-9}$ at 95\% C.L. for mirror electrons in dark plasma at local temperature ranges from 0.1 to 0.3 KeV. This limit manifests strong agreement with the experimental bound from LUX, and appreciably constrain the parameter space for the mirror electrons temperature below 0.3 KeV in the Milky Way halo around spiral galaxies. For mirror nuclei dark matter potentially viable parameter space on kinetic mixing of $10^{-11}$ to $4\cdot 10^{-10}$ can be probed at 95\% C.L for the mirror carbon, mirror oxygen to mirror neon compositions in halos within the mirror dark matter theory. In addition, we examine the dependence of the mirror nuclei dark matter scattering rate on the choice of halo model parameters, mirror nuclear form factors and demonstrate how these choices propagate to the predicted events and kinetic mixing sensitivity limits. We find the choice of halo model parameters affects the predicted sensitivity up to $(15-71)\%$ and parameterizations in nuclear form factor can lead to less than $2\%$ effect on kinetic mixing sensitivity in the allowed parameter space over the mass scale $(11-20)$ GeV. Analyzing all these aspects, we forecast direct detection experiments are highly sensitive and will allow a test of the mirror dark matter theory.

Abstract:Magnetic fields are one of most concealed components of the universe. They are observed as part of the intergalactic medium and on galaxy cluster scales, however their origin and evolution is unclear. In this work we use the IllustrisTNG simulation to investigate the effects of magnetic fields in cosmic voids, the least dense regions of the universe. We find that, under the hypothesis of a uniform primordial magnetic field, the voids still reflect the primordial properties of the fields. On the other hand, the galaxies in their interior acquire weaker magnetic fields than galaxies in denser environments.

Abstract:The role of magnetic fields in galaxy evolution is still an unsolved question in astrophysics. We have previously shown that magnetic fields play a crucial role in major mergers between disc galaxies; in hydrodynamic simulations of such mergers, the Auriga model produces compact remnants with a distinctive bar and ring morphology. In contrast, in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations, remnants form radially-extended discs with prominent spiral arm structure. In this paper, we analyse a series of cosmological "zoom-in" simulations of major mergers and identify exactly \textit{how} magnetic fields are able to alter the outcome of the merger. We find that magnetic fields modify the transport of angular momentum, systematically hastening the merger progress. The impact of this altered transport depends on the orientation of the field, with a predominantly non-azimuthal (azimuthal) orientation increasing the central baryonic concentration (providing support against collapse). Both effects act to suppress an otherwise existent bar-instability, which in turn leads to a fundamentally different morphology and manifestation of feedback. We note, in particular, that stellar feedback is substantially less influential in MHD simulations, which allows for the later accretion of higher angular momentum gas and the subsequent rapid radial growth of the remnant disc. A corollary of the increased baryonic concentration in MHD simulations is that black holes are able to grow twice as large, although this turns out to have little impact on the remnant's development. Our results show that galaxy evolution cannot be modelled correctly without including magnetic fields.

Abstract:Magnetic fields constitute an energetic component of the interstellar medium in galaxies and hence can affect the formation of galactic structures. Sensitive resolved radio continuum observations together with statistical studies in galaxy samples are performed to investigate the origin and the impact of the magnetic fields. The JVLA cloud-scale survey of the local group galaxy, M33, unveils strong tangled magnetic field along the spiral arms and in the galaxy center indicating amplification due to compression and local shear in molecular clouds. Studying a sample of non-cluster, non-interacting galaxies, we find that the large-scale ordered magnetic field scales with the rotation speed of galaxies. The total and disordered magnetic fields scales with the star formation rate in normal star forming galaxies. On the other hand, a strong magnetic field in the center of NGC 1097 -- a massive galaxy undergoing quenching -- is found responsible for decelerating its massive star formation. Putting these results together, it is deduced that 1) the Universe was highly magnetized short after the peak of the massive star birth at about 1 Gyr after the Big Bang and 2) the strong magnetic field has possibly acted as back reaction after this time, quenching the massive star formation and stimulating the creation of low-mass stars in massive galaxies.

Environment matters: stronger magnetic fields in satellite galaxies

Abstract:Magnetic fields are ubiquitous in the universe and an important component of the interstellar medium. It is crucial to accurately model and understand their properties in different environments and across all mass ranges to interpret observables related to magnetic fields correctly. However, the assessment of the role of magnetic fields in galaxy evolution is often hampered by limited numerical resolution in cosmological simulations, in particular for satellite galaxies. To this end, we study the magnetic fields in high-resolution cosmological zoom simulations of disk galaxies (with $M_{200}\approx10^{10}$ to $10^{13}\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$) and their satellites within the Auriga galaxy formation model including cosmic rays. We find significantly higher magnetic field strengths in satellite galaxies compared to isolated dwarfs with a similar mass or star-formation rate, in particular after they had their first close encounter with their host galaxy. While this result is ubiquitous and independent of resolution in the satellites that are past their first infall, there seems to be a wide range of amplification mechanisms acting together. Our result highlights the importance of considering the environment of dwarf galaxies when interpreting their magnetic field properties as well as related observables such as their gamma-ray and radio emission, the latter being particularly relevant for future observations such as with the SKA observatory.

Cosmic-void observations reconciled with primordial magnetogenesis

Abstract:It has been suggested that the weak magnetic field hosted by the intergalactic medium in cosmic voids could be a relic from the early Universe. However, accepted models of turbulent magnetohydrodynamic decay predict that the present-day strength of fields originally generated at the electroweak phase transition (EWPT) without parity violation would be too low to explain the observed scattering of γ-rays from TeV blazars. Here, we propose that the decay is mediated by magnetic reconnection and conserves the mean square fluctuation level of magnetic helicity. We find that the relic fields would be stronger by several orders of magnitude under this theory than was indicated by previous treatments, which restores the consistency of the EWPT-relic hypothesis with the observational constraints. Moreover, efficient EWPT magnetogenesis would produce relics at the strength required to resolve the Hubble tension via magnetic effects at recombination and seed galaxy-cluster fields close to their present-day strength.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Magnetic fields are ubiquitous in the Universe. Recently, cosmological simulations of galaxies have successfully begun to incorporate magnetic fields and their evolution in galaxies and their haloes. However, so far they have mostly focused on Milky Way-like galaxies. Here, we analyse a sample of high-resolution cosmological zoom simulations of disc galaxies in haloes with mass ${M}_\rm {200c}$ from $10^{10}$ to $10^{13}\, \rm {M}_\odot$, simulated with the Auriga galaxy formation model. We show that with sufficient numerical resolution the magnetic field amplification and saturation is converged. The magnetic field strength reaches equipartition with turbulent energy density for galaxies in haloes with ${M}_\rm {200c}\gtrsim 10^{11.5}\, \mathrm{M_\odot }$. For galaxies in less massive haloes, the magnetic field strength saturates at a fraction of equipartition that decreases with decreasing halo mass. For our lowest mass haloes, the magnetic field saturates significantly below 10 per cent of equipartition. We quantify the resolution we need to obtain converged magnetic field strengths and discuss our resolution requirements also in the context of the IllustrisTNG cosmological box simulations. We show that, at z = 0, rotation-dominated galaxies in our sample exhibit for the most part an ordered large-scale magnetic field, with fewer field reversals in more massive galaxies. Finally, we compare the magnetic fields in our cosmological galaxies at z = 0 with simulations of isolated galaxies in a collapsing halo set-up. Our results pave the way for detailed studies of cosmic rays and other physical processes in similar cosmological galaxy simulations that crucially depend on the strength and structure of magnetic fields.

Abstract:In this article, using the retarding grid energy analyzer, we have measured the ion energy distributions in a low temperature radio fruquency plasma under the condition of different magnetic mirror parameters. At the centre of discharge cell, the ion energy distributions displace in the direction of low energy with the increase of the magnetic density without evident variation in the ion energy distribution width. With the increase of the magnetic mirror ratio, the ion energy distribution displaces in the direction of high energy, and the width of ion energy distribution became wider. So the magnetic mirror parameters have significant effect on the ion energy distributions.

Abstract:We present two new classes of axisymmetric stationary solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton equations with coupling constant $\alpha^2=3$. Both classes are written in terms of two harmonic maps $\lambda$ and $\tau$. $\lambda$ determines the gravitational potential and $\tau$ the electromagnetic one in such a form that we can have an arbitrary electromagnetic field. As examples we generate two solutions with mass ($M$), rotation ($s$) and scalar ($\delta$) parameters, one with electric charge ($q$) another one with magnetic dipole ($Q$) parameter. The first solution contains the Kerr metric for $q=\delta=0$.

Implications of the DAMA and CRESST experiments for mirror matter-type dark matter

Abstract:Mirror atoms are expected to be a significant component of the galactic dark matter halo if mirror matter is identified with the non-baryonic dark matter in the Universe. Mirror matter can interact with ordinary matter via gravity and via the photon-mirror photon kinetic mixing interaction -- causing mirror charged particles to couple to ordinary photons with effective electric charge $\epsilon e$. This means that the nuclei of mirror atoms can elastically scatter off the nuclei of ordinary atoms, leading to nuclear recoils, which can be detected in existing dark matter experiments. We show that the dark matter experiments most sensitive to this type of dark matter candidate (via the nuclear recoil signature) are the DAMA/NaI and CRESST/Sapphire experiments. Furthermore, we show that the impressive annual modulation signal obtained by the DAMA/NaI experiment can be explained by mirror matter-type dark matter for $|\epsilon | \sim 4 \times 10^{-9}$ and is supported by DAMA's absolute rate measurement as well as the CRESST/Sapphire data. This value of $|\epsilon |$ is consistent with the value obtained from various solar system anomalies including the Pioneer spacecraft anomaly, anomalous meteorite events and lack of small craters on the asteroid Eros. It is also consistent with standard BBN.

Abstract:Strongly supercooled first-order phase transitions (FOPTs) can produce primordial black hole (PBH) dark matter (DM) along with observable gravitational waves (GWs) from bubble collisions. Such FOPTs may also produce coherent magnetic fields generated by bubble collisions and by turbulence in the primordial plasma. Here we find that the requirement for PBH DM can produce large primordial magnetic fields which subsequently yield intergalactic magnetic fields in the present Universe (with magnitude ≲20 pG across coherence length scales of ≃0.001–0.01 Mpc , assuming maximally helical magnetic fields) that easily exceed lower bounds from blazar observations. Time evolution of the galactic B - rho relation: The impact of the magnetic field morphology

Abstract:One of the indicators most frequently used to characterize the magnetic field's influence on star formation is the relation between the magnetic field strength and the gas density (the $ B- rho $ relation), usually expressed as a power law of the form $ B kappa $. The value of kappa is an indication of the dynamical importance of the magnetic field during gas compression. In this work, we investigate the role of the global magnetic field morphology on a galaxy's $ B- rho $ relation, as well as the evolution of the relation over time. We developed magnetohydrodynamic simulations of Milky Way-like galaxies that include gravity, star formation, and supernova feedback. The models take into account nonequilibrium chemistry up to $ H_2$ formation, which is used to fuel star formation. We considered two different initial magnetic field morphologies: one completely ordered (toroidal) and the other completely random. Using these models, we studied the dynamical importance of the magnetic field through the plasma beta and the $ B- rho $ relation. For both magnetic morphologies, low-density regions are thermally supported, while high-density regions are magnetically dominated. Equipartition is reached earlier and at lower densities in the toroidal model. However, the $ B- relation varies, even within the same galaxy, as it consistently includes two different branches for a given density, with kappa ranging from about 0.2 to 0.8. The mean value of kappa for each model also varies significantly over time, which supersedes the differences between the two models. While our findings suggest that the magnetic field morphology does influence the galactic $ B- relation, its impact is transient in nature since time-averaged differences between the models fall within the large temporal scatter. The context and time-dependent nature of the $ B- relation underscore the need for comprehensive research and observations to understand the intricate role of magnetic fields in star formation processes across diverse galactic environments.

Relieving the Hubble Tension with Primordial Magnetic Fields

Abstract:The standard cosmological model determined from the accurate cosmic microwave background measurements made by the Planck satellite implies a value of the Hubble constant H_{0} that is 4.2 standard deviations lower than the one determined from type Ia supernovae. The Planck best fit model also predicts higher values of the matter density fraction Ω_{m} and clustering amplitude S_{8} compared to those obtained from the Dark Energy Survey Year 1 data. Here we show that accounting for the enhanced recombination rate due to additional small-scale inhomogeneities in the baryon density may solve both the H_{0} and the S_{8}-Ω_{m} tensions. The additional baryon inhomogeneities can be induced by primordial magnetic fields present in the plasma prior to recombination. The required field strength to solve the Hubble tension is just what is needed to explain the existence of galactic, cluster, and extragalactic magnetic fields without relying on dynamo amplification. Our results show clear evidence for this effect and motivate further detailed studies of primordial magnetic fields, setting several well-defined targets for future observations.
Dwarf galaxies as a probe of a primordially magnetized Universe

Abstract:Aims : The true nature of primordial magnetic fields (PMFs) and their role in the formation of galaxies remains elusive. To shed light on these unknowns, we investigated their impact by varying two sets of properties: (i) accounting for the effect of PMFs on the initial matter power spectrum and (ii) accounting for their magneto-hydrodynamical effects on the formation of galaxies. By comparing both, we can determine the dominant agent in shaping galaxy evolution. Methods: We used the magneto-hydrodynamics code RAMSES odot $. These halos were selected from a Lambda CDM cosmological box, tracking their evolution down to redshift $z=0$. We explored a variety of primordial magnetic field (comoving) strengths of $B_ lambda $ ranging from $0.05$ to $0.50\ nG Results: We find that magnetic fields in the interstellar medium not only modify star formation processes in dwarf spheroidal galaxies, but these fields also entirely prevent the formation of stars in less compact, ultra-faint galaxies with halo masses and stellar masses below, respectively, $ and $3 odot odot $ in the Lambda CDM$+$PMFs matter power spectrum, primordial fields expedite the formation of the first dark matter halos, leading to an earlier onset and a higher star formation rate at redshifts of $z>9$. We investigated the evolution of various energy components and demonstrated that magnetic fields with an initial strength of $B_ lambda nG $ exhibit a strong growth of magnetic energy, accompanied by a saturation phase that begins soon after the growth phase. These trends persist consistently, regardless of the initial conditions or whether it is the classical Lambda CDM model or Lambda CDM modified by PMFs. Lastly, we investigated the impact of PMFs on the present-time observable properties of dwarf galaxies, namely: the half light radius, V-band luminosity, mean metallicity, and velocity dispersion profile. We find that PMFs with moderate strengths of $B_ lambda nG $ show an impressive agreement with the scaling relations of the observed Local Group dwarfs. However, stronger fields lead to larger sizes and higher velocity dispersions.

Cosmic Ray Diffusion in the Turbulent Interstellar Medium: Effects of Mirror Diffusion and Pitch Angle Scattering

Abstract:Cosmic rays (CRs) interact with turbulent magnetic fields in the intestellar medium, generating nonthermal emission. After many decades of studies, the theoretical understanding of their diffusion in the ISM continues to pose a challenge. This study numerically explores a recent prediction termed "mirror diffusion" and its synergy with traditional diffusion mechanism based on gyroresonant scattering. Our study combines 3D MHD simulations of star-forming regions with test particle simulations to analyze CR diffusion. We demonstrate the significance of mirror diffusion in CR diffusion parallel to the magnetic field, when the mirroring condition is satisfied. Our results support the theoretical expectation that the resulting particle propagation arising from mirror diffusion in combination with much faster diffusion induced by gyroresonant scattering resembles a Levy-flight-like propagation. Our study highlights the necessity to reevaluate the diffusion coefficients traditionally adopeted in the ISM based on gyroresonant scattering alone. For instance, our simulations imply a diffusion coefficient $\sim10^{27}cm^2/s$ for particles with a few hundred TeV within regions spanning a few parsecs around the source.
