Abstract:The simulation of lunar granular regolith requires the use of models that accurately represent the interaction of highly angular particles. Discrete element method (DEM) is an effective tool for the simulation of granular material behaviors such as particle flows and tool-medium interactions. This paper describes the development of a new three-dimensional discrete element code BLOKS3D for the simulation of polyhedral particles. New algorithms are presented for neighbor search and contact detection. These algorithms are more efficient than currently available in the literature and significantly improve the analysis speed. A series of simulation examples on direct shear tests are presented to demonstrate and evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms and the overall DEM code. A comparison with a series of physical experiments of the interaction of earthmoving equipment with soil further demonstrates the performance of the developed DEM code.

Abstract:Multidirectional shearing of granular soils involves shearing more than one shear stress component, and thus may result in more-complex soil responses than unidirectional shearing. This study developed an advanced numerical procedure that can impose an arbitrary loading path on a granular assembly in three-dimensional space as a basis for discrete-element simulations to investigate the behavior of granular assemblies under undrained cyclic multidirectional shearing conditions. The tests included varying stress trajectories on the deviatoric stress plane, including straight-line, circular, figure-8, and teardrop shapes. The numerical results indicated that the liquefaction resistance of a sample for a given cyclic shear stress ratio (CSR) depends on the stress orbits, and that of the teardrop shape was the highest and that of the figure-8 shape was the lowest. The microstructure of the granular assembly was quantified by the contact-normal-based fabric tensor, and its evolution trend correlation with stress-strain responses was explored. The evolution of fabric and stress-strain relationships from discrete-element modeling under multidirectional shearing conditions can provide useful insights into the behavior of granular soils.

Abstract:In-situ soil deposits often have an initial shear stress that significantly affects their subsequent cyclic behavior and liquefaction susceptibility. This is closely related to the internal structure of the soil but is very difficult to study thoroughly through conventional laboratory tests. In this study, a numerical procedure that can impose arbitrary two-dimensional stress or strain paths was developed using the discrete element method (DEM); this procedure was then used in simulations to investigate the behavior of granular polygonal samples under an undrained cyclic simple shear with various densities and stress conditions. Two types of cyclic responses could be identified from the simulation results: ?cyclic liquefaction? and ?residual deformation failure.? It was found that the initial static shear could either enhance or weaken the cyclic resistance of sand to liquefaction failure, depending on the extent of the shear stress reversal. The internal structure of the granular materials was quantified using a contact-normal-based fabric tensor that could describe their load-bearing characteristics in response to the external applied stress. The norm and principal direction of the fabric tensor both exhibited drastically different evolution patterns under varying loading conditions. This can provide further insights into the underlying failure mechanism of granular soils.
Quantifying and Modelling Fabric Anisotropy of Granular Soils

Abstract:This paper describes an integrated study of the effects of fabric anisotropy on granular soil response, in which the microscopic measurements are properly linked with the macroscopic modelling. Using an image-analysis-based technique and an appropriate mathematical approach, the inherent fabrics of sand specimens prepared in the laboratory using different sample preparation methods were measured, quantified and compared at a microscale level. It was found that the specimen prepared by the dry deposition method had a more anisotropic microstructure than the specimen prepared using the moist tamping method, which is considered directly associated with the experimental observation that different sample preparation methods produce samples with distinctive responses under otherwise identical conditions. An existing platform model was then extended so that the combined effects of initial fabric and shear mode dependence were accounted for in a simple yet rational manner. To calibrate and verify the model, a series of laboratory tests was conducted for Toyoura sand under various combinations of loading and sample preparation conditions. It is shown that the model is capable of simulating in a unified manner the experimental results reflecting the combined effects of sample preparation methods, loading paths, soil densities and confining pressures.

Abstract:This paper presents a review of particle breakage in granular soils by comprehensively summarizing the measurement of particle breakage, the fundamentals of particle breakage, the soil mechanics on particle breakage, the theoretical models of soil incorporating particle breakage. In the measurement of particle breakage, most particle breakage indexes were proposed according to the change of soil grading. The increase in the particle-surface area and probabilistic method were also employed to quantify particle breakage. In the fundamentals of particle breakage, the crushability of granular soil is mainly related to the physical nature and mechanical properties of soil, the stress-strain state on soil and the surrounding environment on soil, which were always interpreted by the energy theory and fractal theory. In the soil mechanics on particle breakage, particle breakage resulted in impairment of dilatancy behavior of soil to become a more contractive soil, significantly influencing the shearing, dilatancy, and state behavior of soil. A number of constitutive models of granular soils incorporating particle breakage were proposed by the elastoplastic theory, the bounding surface theory, the disturb state concept theory, the continuum breakage mechanics theory, and the generalized plasticity theory for interpreting the influence of particle breakage on soil behavior.

Abstract:We present a hypoplastic model for the granular material to account for the particle breakage effect. The degree of particle breakage is expressed by a relative breakage ratio, which evolves with the input energy during the loading process. The critical state line of the model is related to the relative breakage ratio to reflect the influence of particle breakage on the mechanical behavior of soil. The model performance is demonstrated by comparing the model simulations with the experimental results under different test conditions.

Abstract:Granular materials, such as rockfill materials and carbonate sand, exhibit complex mechanical behavior, which is affected by particle breakage under elevated pressures. In this study, we present a relative breakage model based on mean stress, void ratio, and strain. We further consider the effect of relative breakage on the critical state line. A hypoplastic constitutive model is developed by incorporating the critical state. The validity of the constitutive model is shown by comparing the numerical and experimental results of drained triaxial tests.

Abstract:A novel approach has been developed to predict the mechanical behavior of very coarse granular materials with a constitutive model, which considers both grain breakage and size effect. The behavior of granular assemblies is significantly influenced by particle breakage. A critical-state double-yield-surface model incorporating the change in the critical-state line and in elastic stiffness caused by grain breakage during loading has been adopted. The amount of grain breakage was estimated by extending the size effect theory on individual grains to granular assemblies. The results from earlier studies on granular materials with parallel gradations have been usefully exploited to calibrate and to validate the model. Comparisons between experiments and simulations suggest that this approach can predict the mechanical behavior of very coarse granular materials from test results performed on a finer fraction with a homothetic gradation.

Abstract:Particle breakage often occurs in the fields of geological, geotechnical and hydraulic engineering like rock avalanche, landslides and high earth-rock dam, which affects the design and countermeasures of relevant engineering structures. Investigation of particle breakage's effect on mechanical behaviors of granular soils has always been the hotspot within the community of particulate materials. In this study, a coupled finite element method (FEM) and discrete element method (DEM) modeling has been developed to tackle boundary value problems (BVPs) related with particle breakage. In the method, the particle breakage simulation is implemented in DEM through the conventional bonded particle modeling (BPM), while the stress–strain characteristics of representative volume element (RVE) captured by DEM is directly transmitted into the FEM solver to avoid the complicated and phenomenological constitutive equations incorporating into particle breakage. As an illustration, we apply the proposed multiscale modeling to investigating mechanical behaviors of quartz sands subjected to particle breakage through the high confining pressure biaxial compression simulation. And effects of particle strength, particle shape and confining pressure on particle breakage characteristics and further mechanical behaviors of quartz sands are also discussed accompanied with the underlying micromechanisms. Results demonstrate that the coupled FEM-DEM modeling can be able to deal with the complex geomechanics problems involving particle breakage.

Abstract:Single particle crushing tests have been carried out to research the breakage characteristics of natural rockfill particle. The results show that the size distribution of broken particles can be described by the normal distribution, and the size distributions of all size fractions converge to a uniform normal distribution after being normalized by the size of parent particle. Based on the breakage characteristics of rockfill particle, a gradation evolution model was proposed to predict the evolution of the gradation curve of triaxial specimen. And this model adopts the loading manner of incremental stress. The correlation among the relative breakage indexes that in terms of the ratio of areas enclosed by the gradation curves is analysed and found that there is a linear relationship between different indexes. It indicates that there is no essential difference among these indexes from the mathematical point of view. Finally, an elastoplastic constitutive model incorporating the gradation evolution model was developed. This model can predict the stress-strain behaviour and gradation evolution of triaxial specimens of limestone rockfill, under the conditions of consolidation, drained and quasi-static shear loading.

Abstract:A number of discrete element analyses of undrained triaxial shear tests on crushable assemblies are performed using 3-dimensional particle flow code (PFC3D). The undrained shear of the samples is simulated by assigning different velocities at the boundaries to control the constant volume of the samples during the shear. Particle breakage is studied using the octahedral shear stress breakage criterion and the fragment spawning mode satisfying an Apollonian sphere packing. The microparameters of the soils are obtained by simulating the test results reported on a Nansha calcareous sand. The effects of particle breakage and drainage condition on the critical state behaviours of the sand are intensively examined. It is found that particle breakage and drainage condition do not affect the slope of the critical state p ′− q line. In the e cs −( p ′ cs / p a ) 0.7 space, the critical state line translates downward and rotates clockwise when particle breakage is considered, whilst drainage condition does not affect the critical state line. The intrinsic macro–micro correlations underlying the critical state behaviours are explored by analysing the evolution of representative micromechanical indicators such as coordination number, redundancy ratio, and fabric and force anisotropies.

Abstract:Although the mechanical response of granular materials strongly depends on the interplay between their anisotropic internal structure (fabric) and loading direction, such coupling is not explicitly considered in existing high-cycle experimental datasets and models. High-cycle experiments on granular specimens specifically prepared with various fabric orientations are presented. It is found that the high-cycle strain accumulation behavior can change remarkably, from shakedown to ratcheting, when the fabric orientation deviates more from the loading direction. Inspired by the experimental observations, a fabric-dependent anisotropic high-cycle model is proposed, by proper recasting of an existing model formulated within Critical State Theory, into the framework of Anisotropic Critical State Theory. The model explicitly accounts for the fabric evolution, which is linked to plastic modulus, dilatancy and kinematic hardening rules. The model can quantitatively reproduce the high-cycle strain accumulation (i.e., shakedown and ratcheting) under drained conditions, as well as pre-liquefaction and post-liquefaction responses granular materials having widely ranged fabric anisotropy, densities and cyclic loading types using a unified set of constants. It exhibits a unique feature of simulating the distinct high-cycle strain accumulation and liquefaction of granular material with various fabric anisotropy, while the existing high-cycle models treat them equally. The successful reproduction of the anisotropic sand element response under high-cycle drained and undrained conditions makes it possible to perform whole life analysis of various foundations on granular soil subjected to high-cycle loading events.

Abstract:<p>Existing DEM researches related to particle breakage usually assume that particles are regular shapes and debris is spherical. In this paper, a method combining relatively realistic particle shape and realistic breakage is proposed to study particle breakage in the DEM. The particle morphology was derived from the scanned real particles and was convex treated. The breakable particle was modelled as an aggregate composed with coplanar and glued Voronoi polyhedra. Then, a series of drained triaxial tests under different confining pressures were conducted. The macroscopic characteristics, including the shear strength, dilatancy and particle breakage, are qualitatively in agreement with previous literatures, which show the rationality of the proposed method. Further, the microscopic characteristics, including the coordination number and sliding contact, were investigated to explore the effect of particle breakage on the macroscopic shear behaviour. Finally, the analysis-related anisotropy coefficients were evaluated to probe the microscopic origins of the peak and critical shear strengths.</p>

Abstract:Abstract An elastic–plastic constitutive model considering particle breakage for simulation of crushable granular soils behavior is proposed. In the model, elastic strain rates are derived from a modified Helmholtz free energy function, and the influence of plastic shear work-induced particle breakage on the elastic properties of sand is taken into account as an elastic–plastic coupling mechanism. A stress ratio-driven mechanism is employed for calculation of the plastic strain rates. The proposed model is capable of tracking the evolution of the grain size distribution (GSD) due to shear-induced particle breakage. The evolving breakage index of Einav (2007) (J Mech Phys Solids 55(6):1274–1297, 2007) is interrelated to the plastic shear work to avoid overestimation of shear-induced particle breakage in loose sands. A direct comparison between the model simulations and laboratory data has been carried out for five series of drained/undrained monotonic and cyclic triaxial tests covering a wide range of initial states. For the sake of comparison, predicted behaviors from a hypoplastic constitutive model specially developed for crushable granular soils are also included. It is shown that the proposed constitutive model can provide reasonable predictions using a single set of parameters for each series of the laboratory data.

Abstract:The anisotropy of granular geomaterials is sensitive to their fabric, which exhibits anisotropic mechanical properties as a function of deposition history, microscopic fabric, and loading paths. Here, a new fabric-enriched continuum breakage model is proposed to examine the relation between elastic and inelastic anisotropy in granular materials and cemented granular materials. A microstructure model is first implemented in the framework of fabric-enriched continuum breakage mechanics (F-CBM), where the anisotropic behaviour prior to yielding is introduced through a symmetric second-order fabric tensor embedded in the expression of the elastic energy potential. The anisotropic strain energy storage prior to grain crushing leads to the rotation and distortion of the yield surface of cemented granular materials. Parametric analyses are performed to assess the overall capability of the model to characterize the anisotropic inelastic processes in cemented granular. It is shown that the proposed model can accurately predict the strong correlation between anisotropic elasticity and breakage-damage processes in cemented granular materials. When damage involving the skeleton is the dominant inelastic process, the size of the elastic domain contracts and the material exhibits augmented brittleness with the disintegration of cement. While breakage processes are predicted to dominate the response of lightly cemented granular materials resulting in hardening behaviour. This work can be further extended to dynamically capture the anisotropic response of cemented granular materials with water-sensitive mineral constituents by accounting for the evolution of microstructural anisotropy.

Abstract:Extensive quarrying for graded gravel can damage ecosystems and reduce biodiversity, making its optimized use crucial. Previous studies on the mechanical properties and deformation capacity of graded gravel filler have generally regarded it as a continuous medium, which yields certain deviations. In this study, the discrete element method is applied to consider the discontinuity of the material. A particle flow model is established based on relevant test parameters for graded gravel and a triaxial compression test is carried out accordingly. The effects of particle meso-parameters on the mechanical properties of graded gravel are investigated after using indoor test results to calibrate the model. The triaxial compression numerical model of graded gravel is utilized to differentiate two particles contact models in the discrete element software PFC; the characteristics and applicable objects of the two models are determined. The results confirm that the linear contact key model is suitable for graded gravel. This work provides valuable insights for further exploration of the load-bearing characteristics of graded gravel pavement bases and positively impacts the ecological environment.

Abstract:A series of numerically triaxial shear tests on crushable and uncrushable granular soils reinforced by geogrid were conducted using 3-Dimension Particle Flow Code. The macroscopic behaviors of crushable and uncrushable granular soil during shearing were compared. Also, the underlying macro–micro linkages were explored. The main findings are as follows: Particle breakage decreases the contact forces between soil particles to reduce the shear strength of granular soils; The reinforcement effect of geogrids on the shear strength of granular soils can be attributed to the increase in fabric and force anisotropies; The particle displacement distribution of crushable soil samples is more uniform than that of uncrushable samples, and the shear band of crushable samples is not obvious; The reinforcement effect of geogrid with the aperture size ratio of 4.4 is the highest among the samples because the number of crushed particles and the deformation of geogrids reaches a balance.

Abstract:Abstract As an excellent building material, the coarse-grained soil is widely used in various construction engineering. The breakage of coarse-grained soils has a great influence on the overall quality of the engineering. Therefore, it is very important to study the breaking characteristics of coarse-grained soils. In this study, limestone was used to simulate coarse-grained soil. Point-point contact experiments of different particle sizes and loading conditions were carried out to study the breakage characteristics of soil particles. The effect of particle size and loading conditions on breakage characteristics was investigated through analyzing the breakage processes, failure modes, force-displacement curves and cone core sizes. The results indicated that the spherical limestone particles break locally at the contact point with the increase of normal force in the normal loading experiments. And with the contact area expanding, the particles finally split into several fragments. The diameter and the depth of the cone core are proportional to the particle size. Whether particles broke completely depended on the loading lever of normal force under complex load conditions. The critical loading level of normal force of limestone with a diameter of 5cm was 70%. The horizontal angles of crack are proportional to the loading lever of the normal force. The diameter of the cone core is affected by both normal force and tangential force, and its depth is mainly affected by the magnitude of the normal force.

Abstract:A numerical investigation of the effect of particle breakage on the one-dimensional compression behavior of a realistic granular assembly was carried out using the discrete-element method. The morphologies of sands were obtained using X-ray microcomputed tomography. Sand assemblies were generated in terms of the statistical distribution of sphericity from real sands. The results of single-particle compression tests showed that particle shape significantly affects crushing strength. Particle breakage had a significant influence on compressive deformation, as demonstrated by comparing breakable assemblies with unbreakable ones. The strong force distribution became broader, and the proportion of weak force increased with particle breakability. Looser samples underwent much more particle breakage than did denser samples. It was found that breakage dissipation was a small fraction of energy input compared with frictional dissipation. An excellent hyperbolic relationship between relative breakage and energy input was found, which was independent of initial void ratio.

Abstract:A discrete element model was developed to simulate the micromechanics of compaction localization in a granular rock. The rock was modeled as a bonded assembly of circular disks, and seven different distributions of radius were considered. To simulate grain crushing and pore collapse, an intragranular damage mechanism was introduced that allows for the shrinkage of a disk if one of its normal contact stresses attains a critical value. The model captures key attributes of failure mode and damage evolution associated with the brittle-ductile transition in porous sandstones. Our simulations indicate that the development of discrete compaction bands is promoted in a relatively homogeneous granular aggregate, while diffuse band growth and distributed cataclastic flow are preferred modes of compaction in a more heterogeneous system. To interpret the former result an Eshelby inclusion model was proposed to estimate analytically the local stress perturbations due to pore collapse in a homogeneous aggregate.
