Abstract:Three-dimensional(3D)analytical solution for a rotating annular plate made of functionally graded materials with transverse isotropy waft,obtained.It is based on the basic equations of piezoelectricity and the direct displacement method.The material parameters were assumed as the arbitrary functions of thickness coordinate(Z).The general displacement components(displacement and the electric potential)were assumed as a linear combination of the power -functions of radial coordinate(r)with nine undetermined displacement functions.By means of the boundary conditions with direct integral approach,the governing equations of the annular were solved and the displacement functions and integral constants were given.Thus the general stress fields of the rotating annular were determined.Effects played by gradient index on the distributing of elastic and electric fields were studied humerically in an example.

Abstract:The bending of piezoelectric annular plates is the classic problem in theory of piezoelectric elasticity. The solution of axisymmetric bending of FGPM annular plates subject to arbitrarily transverse loads is not available in the literatures though some solutions for special loads have been derived. For this purpose, this paper analytically studies the axisymmetric bending of functionally graded piezoelectric annular plates subjected to arbitrary transverse loads. Based on the three-dimensional theory of piezoelectricity, this work derives analytical solutions for the axisymmetric bending of piezoelectric annular plates. The transverse loads are expanded in terms of the Fourier-Bessel series, and the solutions corresponding to each item of the series are obtained by the semi-inverse method. The total solutions are then obtained through the superposition principle. The present solutions rigorously satisfies the governing equations when the material properties obey the exponential law along the thickness of the plates. The boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces are completely satisfied while the boundary conditions at the circumferential edges are approximately satisfied based on Saint-Venant's principle.

Abstract:Analytical solutions for functionally graded beams under arbitrary loading are presented in this paper. The material coefficients vary exponentially along the thickness of the beams. The arbitrary loading is expanded in terms of sinusoidal series. For plane stress problems, the stress function and electric displacement function are assumed to consist of two parts, respectively. One is a product of a trigonometric function of the longitudinal coordinate (x) and an undetermined function of the thickness coordinate (z), and the other a linear polynomial of x with unknown coefficients depending on z. The governing equations satisfied by these z-dependent functions are derived. The expressions for stresses, electric displacements, resultant forces and displacements and electric potential are then deduced, with integral constants determinable from the boundary conditions.

Abstract:Functionally graded piezoelectric plates (FGPPs) are often exposed to extreme thermal environments and subjected to large amplitude excitation and strong electric fields. Accurately predicting the nonlinear behaviors of FGPPs under large thermo-electro-mechanical loads remains a considerable challenge. This paper proposes a comprehensive nonlinear coupled analysis model that considers geometric nonlinearity, piezoelectric nonlinearity, and the temperature dependence of piezoelectric parameters. The total Lagrangian incremental finite element equations for FGPPs under thermo-electro-mechanical loads are derived using Hamilton's principle, by employing the first-order shear deformation theory and the von Karman nonlinear strain-displacement relationship. The accuracy of the model is validated through comparative studies. Based on this multi-nonlinear model, we further investigate the effects of geometric nonlinearity, piezoelectric nonlinearity, and temperature dependence on the nonlinear static bending, dynamic responses, and active control of FGPPs. This study demonstrates that considering these factors enables accurate prediction of the static, dynamic, and active control behaviors of FGPPs.

Abstract:Based on the three-dimensional theory of piezoelectricity, this work analytically investigates the axisymmetric bending of circular plates whose material properties vary along the thickness. The transverse loads are expanded in terms of the Fourier–Bessel series, and the solutions corresponding to each item of the series are derived by a semi-inverse method. The overall results are then obtained through the superposition principle. The exact solutions are obtained for two unusual boundary conditions if the material properties obey an exponential law. Meanwhile, a layerwise model is employed for the case of arbitrary and independent distribution of each component of material properties and the approximate solutions are proposed for simply supported and clamped boundaries. Finally, the numerical examples are illustrated, and the results are compared with those of the finite element method to demonstrate the present method.

Abstract:Based on the three-dimensional theory, the axisymmetric bending behavior of functionally graded annular plates made of magneto-electro-elastic, piezoelectric and elastic materials respectively, was investigated. The transverse loads were expanded in terms of a Fourier Bessel series and the solutions corresponding to each item of the series were found by the direct displacement method. Then the superposition principle was utilized to determine the mechanical, electric and magnetic quantities of the annular plates subjected to the arbitrary transverse pressures. It was found that four unusual boundary conditions can be rigorously satisfied at the inner and outer circumferential edges by this method. Meanwhile, the common boundary conditions such as simply supported, clamped and free boundary conditions were approximately satisfied using the Saint-Venant's principle. An innovative isoparametric element was also developed to calculate the axisymmetric behavior of the functionally graded magneto-electro-elasticity for comparison. Abstract:This paper is concerned with the propagation of shear horizontal waves in a functionally graded piezoelectric small-scaled plate. In the context of the modified couple stress theory, the Legendre orthogonal polynomial method is utilized to derive the solutions based on the explicit functionally graded model. Four different electric boundary conditions are considered. The obtained results are compared with those by the global matrix method and the advantages of the polynomial method are indicated. Furthermore, the couple stress effect and piezo-electric effect on the SH waves are investigated. Numerical results indicate that the couple stress and piezo-electric coupling effects on SH propagation are mutually inhibited.

Abstract:Each guided elastic wave mode is composed of propagating and non-propagating branches. Non-propagating branches associated with complex wavenumbers are substantially different from the propagating ones. Accurate calculation of the transcendental dispersion equation for complex wavenumbers and arbitrary ranges of frequencies is usually very difficult, especially for demanding cases such as those involving composite materials and curved structures. In this article, an extended Legendre orthogonal polynomial method is presented to determine non-propagating waves in a functionally graded piezoelectric cylindrical shell. The extended Legendre orthogonal polynomial method can obtain complete solutions without the tedious iterative search. Results are compared with those published earlier to validate the extended Legendre orthogonal polynomial method, and the convergence of this method is also discussed. Dispersion characteristics of the non-propagating waves in various graded piezoelectric cylindrical shells are studied and three-dimensional dispersion curves are plotted. The effects of piezoelectricity, graded fields, and the mechanical and electrical boundary conditions on dispersion curves are illustrated. The displacement amplitude, stress, and electric potential distributions are also analyzed in detail. Numerical results show that the extended Legendre orthogonal polynomial method is very efficient to retrieve the guided waves of any nature and the modes of all orders.

Abstract:The tunable manipulation of guided waves in plates brings out great potential applications in engineering practices, and the electromechanical coupling effects of piezoelectric material with shunting circuits have exhibited powerful tunability and flexibility for guided wave propagation. In this paper, a theoretical model is established to analyze the guided wave propagation in one-dimensional periodic piezoelectric plate constructed from a periodic array of anisotropic piezoelectric materials under periodic electrical boundary conditions. The extended Stroh formalism incorporating with the plane wave expansion method is developed to transform the wave motion equations of the periodic piezoelectric plate into a linear eigenvalue system, and a more concise and elegant solution of generalized displacement and generalized stress can be derived. There are various dispersion relations in terms of the altering electrical boundary conditions to be acquired, if the thin electrodes with shunting circuits are attached periodically to both surfaces of the piezoelectric plate. Analytical results show that the coupling of the local electric resonant mode and propagating elastic wave modes can induce hybridization bandgaps, and the bandgaps of Lamb waves and SH waves in the piezoelectric plate can be tuned by designing appropriate material polarization orientations and shunting circuits. In addition, the Bragg bandgaps can also be influenced by the external circuits. Results indicate that the proposed theoretical model can effectively analyze the performances of guided waves in periodic piezoelectric plate and provide useful theoretical guidance for designing smart wave control devices.

Lamb Wave Propagation in a Functionally Graded Piezoelectric- Piezomagnetic Material Plate

Abstract:Propagation of Lamb waves in a functionally graded piezoelectric-piezomagnetic material plate with material parameters change gradually along thickness direction is investigated. The power series technique is employed for solving the governing differential equations with variable coefficients. In numerical examples, the influence of the variation of each parameter on dispersion curves and cut-off frequency for electrical and magnetic open case is discussed. The results obtained indicate that graded elastic parameters and mass density affect the phase velocity remarkably. Some other graded electrical and magnetic parameters affect the phase velocity a little. The cut-off frequency is close related to two elastic parameters and mass density, while other material parameters almost can’t affect it. All the results may provide theoretical guidance not only for the analysis and design of high performance electro-magnetic transducers but also for the ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of functionally graded piezoelectric-piezomagnetic materials.

Abstract:In this study, we obtained an electroelastic solution for functionally graded piezoelectric circular plates under the action of combined mechanical loads which include the uniformly distributed loads on the upper surface of the plate and the radial force and bending moment at the periphery of the plate. All electroelastic materials parameters are assumed to vary according to the same gradient function along the thickness direction. The influence of different functionally graded parameters on the elastic displacement and elastic stress, as well as the electric displacement and electric potential, was discussed by a numerical example. The solution presented in this study is not only applicable to the case of combined loads, but also to the case of a single mechanical load. In addition, this solution reflects the influence of the function gradient on the pure piezoelectric plate, which is helpful to the refined analysis and optimization design of similar structures.

Abstract:The nonlinear dynamics of a functionally graded rectangular cantilever plate with piezoelectric subjected to transverse loads in thermal environments is investigated in this paper.The governing equations of the functionally graded plate are based on von Karman theory and Reddy's first-order shear deformation plate theory that includes thermal effects.Galerkin method is used to reduce the non-linear partial differential equations to ordinary non-linear differential equations.The influences of gradient constants and control voltage on the nonlinear vibration are discussed.The results show that the positive voltage decreases the amplitude while the negative voltage increases the amplitude of the plate.With the increase of N,the oscillation amplitude increases.
Computation of Propagating and Non-Propagating Lamb-Like Wave in a Functionally Graded Piezoelectric Spherical Curved Plate by an Orthogonal Function Technique

Abstract:Non-propagating waves have great potential for crack evaluation, but it is difficult to obtain the complex solutions of the transcendental dispersion equation corresponding to the non-propagating wave. This paper presents an analytical approach based on the orthogonal function technique to investigate non-propagating Lamb-like waves in a functionally graded piezoelectric spherical curved plate. The presented approach can transform the set of partial differential equations for the acoustic waves into an eigenvalue problem that can give the generally complex wave numbers and the field profiles. A comparison of the obtained results with the well-known ones in plates is provided. The obtained solutions of the dispersion equation are shown graphically in three dimensional frequency-complex wave number space, which aids in understanding the properties of non-propagating waves better. The properties of the guided wave, including real, purely imaginary, and complex branches in various functionally graded piezoelectric spherical curved plates, are studied. The effects of material piezoelectricity, graded fields, and mechanical and electrical boundary conditions on the dispersion characteristics, are illustrated. The amplitude distributions of displacement and electric potential are also discussed, to analyze the specificities of non-propagating waves.

Abstract:The effect of functional graded piezoelectric materials on the propagation of thickness-twist waves is investigated through equations of the linear theory of piezoelectricity. The elastic and piezoelectric coefficients, dielectric permittivity, and mass density are assumed to change in a linear form but with different graded parameters along the wave propagation direction. We employ the power-series technique to solve the governing differential equations with variable coefficients attributed to the different graded parameters and prove the correction and convergence of this method. As a special case, the functional graded middle layer resulting from piezoelectric damage and material bonding is investigated. Piezoelectric damaged material can facilitate energy trapping, which is impossible in perfect materials. The increase in the damaged length and the reduction in the piezoelectric coefficient decrease the resonance frequency but increase the number of modes. Higher modes of thickness-twist waves appear periodically along the damaged length. Moreover, the displacement of the center of the damaged portion is neither symmetric nor anti-symmetric, unlike the non-graded plate. The conclusions are theoretically and practically significant for wave devices.

Abstract:This paper carried out a theoretical research on multi-physics coupling problems of functionally-graded lead-free piezoelectric rectangular thin plates. Firstly, the perturbation theory was used to study the bending problem of functionally-graded lead-free piezoelectric rectangular thin plates, and the nonlinear governing equations for this bending problem were established. Then, the three piezoelectric coefficients reflecting the piezoelectric property were taken as the perturbation parameters, and the nonlinear governing equations were transformed into multiple sets of linear equations by the multi-parameter perturbation method. Finally, the solutions of these linear equations were solved by the semi-inverse solving method. Based on the finite element simulations, the effectiveness of the perturbation solutions obtained here was verified. The research results showed that it was reasonable to choose three piezoelectric coefficients as perturbation parameters, which was accord with the basic idea of perturbation theory. The analysis results indicated that there was a cross transfer relationship between external loads and perturbation solutions of every order, which could be used to simplify the perturbation expansion. Moreover, the deformation of the functionally-graded lead-free piezoelectric thin plate was less than that of the functionally-graded thin plate, that is, piezoelectric properties in lead-free piezoelectric materials had a piezoelectric enhancement effect.

Abstract:Our paper focuses on wave propagation in a circular annular piezoelectric plate with hexagonal elastic symmetry used in Micro-Electromechanical Systems (MEMS). The objective is to examine the properties of two piezoelectric materials: PZT-5A, a soft ceramic used in ultrasonic sensors, and PZT-4, a strong ceramic used in ultrasonic actuators. We developed the Legendre orthogonal polynomial method to obtain semi-analytical solutions for the governing equations. One strength of our method is that it can analyze the global structure using a single formalism calculation. The analysis takes into consideration the alternating current excitation and directly includes the boundary conditions into the vibration equations. As a result, we found that the limit value of voltage across the electrodes equals that can be applied to determine the maximum von Mises stress without exceeding the yield stress value of for the PZT4. The electromechanical coupling coefficient shows that the fundamental mode is the most piezoactive mode in the structure. Furthermore, we present the natural frequencies, electrical input impedance, field profiles, and dispersion curves. To validate the efficiency and accuracy of our approach, we compared our results with those obtained using voltage excitation and analytical data. Ultimately, we achieved a good agreement between them.

Abstract:For the purpose of design and optimization for piezoelectric quasi-crystal transducers, guided waves in a functionally graded 1-D hexagonal piezoelectric quasi-crystal plate are investigated. In this paper, a model combined with the Bak’s and elastohydrodynamic models is utilized to derive governing equations of wave motion, and real, pure imaginary, and complex roots of governing equations are calculated by using the modified Legendre polynomial method. Subsequently, dispersion curves and displacements of phonon and phason modes are illustrated. Then, guided waves in functionally graded 1-D hexagonal piezoelectric quasi-crystal plates with different quasi-periodic directions are studied. And the phonon-phason coupling effect on Lamb and SH waves are analyzed. Accordingly, some interesting results are obtained: The phonon-phason coupling just affects Lamb waves in the x- and z-direction quasi-crystal plates, and SH waves in the y-direction quasi-crystal plate. Besides, frequencies of propagative phason modes decrease as phonon-phason coupling coefficients Ri increase. Furthermore, a variation in the polarization has a more significant influence on phonon modes, and a variation in the quasi-periodic direction has a more significant influence on phason modes.
Axisymmetric bending analysis of functionally graded one-dimensional hexagonal piezoelectric quasi-crystal circular plate

Abstract:Within a framework of the state space method, an axisymmetric solution for functionally graded one-dimensional hexagonal piezoelectric quasi-crystal circular plate is presented in this paper. Applying the finite Hankel transform onto the state space vector, an ordinary differential equation with constant coefficients is obtained for the circular plate provided that the free boundary terms are zero and an exponential function distribution of material properties is assumed. The ordinary differential equation is then used to obtain the stress, displacement and electric components in the physical domain of the elastic simply supported circular plate through the use of the propagator matrix method and the inverse Hankel transform. The numerical studies are carried out to show the validity of the present solution and reveal the influence of material inhomogeneity on the axisymmetric bending of the circular plate with different layers and loadings, which provides guidance for the design and manufacture of functionally graded one-dimensional hexagonal piezoelectric quasi-crystal circular plate.

Abstract:An analytical study on transverse surface waves propagating in a functionally graded piezoelectric substrate carrying a metal layer of finite thickness was carried out. Dispersion relations for the existence of the waves were obtained and the effects of material gradient on wave propagation were quantified. Numerical examples show that the presence of the material gradient affects significantly the fundamental mode but has only negligible effects on the higher order modes. Depending on whether the surface wave velocity is smaller or greater than the bulk shear wave velocity in the metal layer, three different types of the dispersion behavior are discussed.

Abstract:This research provides a mathematical model and solution for investigating wave propagation in graphene platelets (GPLs)-reinforced functionally graded (FG) metal foam plates integrated with piezoelectric actuator and sensor layers resting on an orthotropic visco-Pasternak medium in magneto-electro-thermo environment. The FG porous nanocomposite core and the actuator piezoelectric layer are exposed to steady magnetic and electric fields, respectively. The electric potential between two piezoelectric layers is governed by a proportional-derivative controller. The Halpin–Tsai micromechanics model and the Kelvin–Voigt model are adopted to express the effective elastic modulus of the FG porous nanocomposite core and material viscoelasticity of the core and piezoelectric layers, respectively. The governing equations of smart FG porous nanocomposite plates under thermal environment are derived grounded on the refined third-order shear deformation theory. Upon the validated theoretical model, the wave velocities and frequencies in plates are obtained by solving governing equations analytically. Finally, the effects of material viscoelasticity, porosity distribution and coefficient, GPL distribution and weight fraction, the plate and GPL geometries and external environment on wave propagation characteristics are demonstrated comprehensively. This work provides guidance on tunable control of wave propagation in smart sandwich plates affected by complex external environments.
