Abstract:ABSTRACT The medical records of 12 cats presented with intussusception and diagnosed at the University of Sydney Veterinary Teaching Hospital and the Sylvania Veterinary Hospital were reviewed. Eleven cats were less than one year old at the time of diagnosis. No breed or sex predilections were determined. The most consistent clinical signs were anorexia (83 per cent), weight loss (83 per cent) and a palpable abdominal mass (92 per cent). Vomiting (58 per cent) and diarrhoea (50 per cent) were seen less frequently in these cats compared with the reported incidence of these signs in dogs. In 10 cats the intussusception was corrected surgically. Manual reduction was successful in three of the cats but six required end‐to‐end anastomosis following intestinal resection and in one cat a typhlectomy was performed. Postoperative ileus complicated recovery in three cases. Recurrence of the intussusception at a different site occurred in two of these cases. One cat with recurrence of intussusception died and the cat with ileus but not recurrence was euthanased one month after the original surgery.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To determine signalment, history, and outcome of cats with gastrointestinal tract intussusception and to identify physical examination, diagnostic imaging, surgical, histologic, and necropsy findings in affected cats.DESIGN: Retrospective case series.ANIMALS: 20 cats with intussusception.PROCEDURES: Medical records were evaluated for information on signalment; history; physical examination, diagnostic imaging, surgical, histologic, and necropsy findings; and outcome.RESULTS: Ten cats were < 1 year old, and 9 were >or= 6 years old. Anorexia (14/17), lethargy (12/17), and vomiting (12/17) were the most common reasons for examination. Dehydration (13/18), poor body condition (12/18), signs of abdominal pain (8/18), and an abdominal mass (8/18) were the most common physical examination findings. Abdominal radiography revealed intestinal obstruction in all 10 cats in which it was performed; abdominal ultrasonography revealed intussusception in all 7 cats in which it was performed. The most common intussusception was jejuno-jejunal (8/20), and no intussusceptions were found proximal to the duodenum. Eleven of 13 cats that underwent laparotomy required intestinal resection and anastomosis. Histologic examination revealed intestinal lymphoma or inflammatory bowel disease in 7 of 8 cats >/= 6 years old and idiopathic intussusception in 7 of 8 cats < 1 year old.CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggested that in cats, intussusception has a bimodal age distribution, is most commonly jejuno-jejunal, often requires surgical resection and anastomosis, is often associated with alimentary lymphoma or inflammatory bowel disease in older cats, and is readily diagnosed by means of ultrasonography.

Abstract:Intestinal obstruction is among the most common causes requiring surgical intervention in the small animal clinic. The more proximal and complete the obstruction, the more acute and intense the signs will be and the greater the likelihood of dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and even death. Among the causes of intestinal obstruction, intussusception may be the one with the highest prevalence. It is usually of idiopathic origin, has no racial and sexual predisposition, and its highest incidence is found in young animals. Predisposing factors are often associated, such as parasitism, gastroenteritis and foreign bodies where the treatment is usually surgical. In the present study we describe a case of a feline, female, one year and two months old with intestinal obstruction, presenting with four days' emesis, hypophagia, dehydration and apathy. This work aims to contribute to the knowledge and alert to a rapid differential diagnosis of intestinal obstructions which is a frequent and important disorder in the small animal clinic and is not always diagnosed in time.
Ultrasonographic and radiographic features of a true gastrogastric intussusception with spontaneous resolution in a cat

Abstract:An 11-year-old, female spayed, domestic shorthair cat with a 1-week history of vomiting was diagnosed with a gastrogastric intussusception using ultrasound. Distinguishing ultrasonographic findings included invagination of the gastric fundus into the body and were correlated to radiographs acquired at the time of the evaluation. Spontaneous resolution of the gastrogastric intussusception was observed on a positive-contrast upper gastrointestinal fluoroscopic study done the following day. Due to worsening comorbidities, which most significantly included chronic renal disease and pancreatitis, and declining quality of life, the patient was humanely euthanized 10 months later. Necropsy revealed no gross and histopathologic abnormalities associated with the stomach. A definitive cause for the intussusception remains unknown.

Abstract:Abstract Gastroesophageal intussusception is a rare pathology characterized by an acute or intermittent invagination of the stomach into the lumen caudal to the thoracic esophagus, the pathogenesis is not well understood, although it is likely multifactorial. The mortality is high, associated with a late diagnosis and a rapid deterioration. A 4-month-old male domestic shorthair kitten presented for evaluation of intermittent respiratory distress and abdominal discomfort with two weeks of evolution. Based on clinical history, clinical sings and imaging studies a diagnosis of intermittent gastroesophageal intussusception was established. The reduction of the intussusception was performed with endoscopy maneuvers and with medical and nutritional management for some days, but this failed and finally was reduced with a percutaneous gastropexy tube to prevent recurrence with a good long-term outcome. Gastroesophageal intussusception in cats is associated with megaesophagus or hiatal hernia, and should be considered as a differential diagnosis in patients with chronic vomiting, regurgitation or respiratory disease. Survey and contrasted thoracic radiographs can be used to identify gross anatomical abnormalities, but the definitive diagnosis should be made by esophagogastroscopy with the possibility of reducing the intussusception. The use of percutaneous gastropexy provides other possible option to conventional surgery for the management of this pathology in cats.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: To review the histological findings in the intestine from dogs and cats with intussusception.METHODS: Medical records and histopathology reports of dogs and cats with intussusception were reviewed retrospectively.RESULTS: Fourty-nine animals (31 dogs and 18 cats) were identified for inclusion. Tissues examined com-prised the intussusception alone in 29 animals (16 dogs and 13 cats), and the intussusception with additional intestinal biopsies in 20 animals (15 dogs and 5 cats). Twenty-eight of 49 (57·1%) animals, comprising 19 of 31 (61·3%) dogs and 9 of 18 cats (50%) had abnormalities detected on histological examination of tissue. Eleven of 29 (46·9%) cases where only the intussusception was submitted achieved a histological diagnosis, compared to 17 of 20 (85%) where additional biopsies were submitted (P=0·003). Cats (median age 36 months, range 2 to 174) were significantly older than dogs (median age 7·5 months, range 1 to 125 months, P=0·010) and were significantly more likely to have underlying neoplasia (5 of 9; 55·6%) compared to dogs who were more likely to have inflammatory causes (17 of 19; 89·5%, P=0·020). There was no association between histological diagnosis and location of the intussusception (P=1·000).CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Histological abnormalities were detected in more than half of the animals. Diagnosis of intestinal disease in animals with intussusception may be improved by submission of additional biopsy samples. Cats with intussusception are more likely to be older and have underlying neoplasia than dogs which are more likely to have inflammatory disease.

Ultrasonographic findings of intestinal intussusception in seven cats

Abstract:The medical records of seven cats with intestinal intussusception that were diagnosed by abdominal ultrasonography and exploratory laparotomy were reviewed. In transverse ultrasonographic sections the intussusception appeared as a target-like mass consisting of one, two or more hyperechoic and hypoechoic concentric rings surrounding a C-shaped, circular or non-specific shaped hyperechoic centre. Part of the intestine representing the inner intussusceptum, located close to the hyperechoic centre and surrounded by concentric rings, was also detected. In longitudinal sections the intussusception appeared as multiple hyperechoic and hypoechoic parallel lines in four cases and as an ovoid mass in three cases. In one case the ovoid mass had a 'kidney' configuration. Additional ultrasonographic findings associated with intestinal intussusception included an intestinal neoplasm in one cat. The results of the present study demonstrate that the ultrasonographic findings of intestinal intussusception in cats bear some similarities to those described in dogs and humans, are relatively consistent, and facilitate a specific diagnosis.

Abstract:Two cats were presented to Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex, Mannuthy with complaint of rectal prolapse from past two days. Presented animals were weak and emaciated. On abdominal palpation a small sausage shaped structure could be palpated and the animal exhibited pain on palpation. Due to the oedema of the prolapsed mass it could not be reduced into normal position. The ultrasonographic examination of the abdomen produced a target sign suggestive that the condition was intussusception. Decided to correct the condition surgically. Opened the abdominal cavity through the Linea alba and exteriorized the affected portion from remaining segments. Manually reduced the affected portion under general anaesthesia. Closed the abdominal cavity and skin incision as per the standard manner. Animals were exhibited successful recovery.
Concurrent gastro-oesophageal intussusception, trichobezoar and hiatal hernia in a cat

Abstract:Case history: An adult male Birman cat was evaluated for recurrent, intermittent vomiting or regurgitation, occasionally associated with abdominal discomfort. Clinical findings and diagnosis: Radiographs, including an oesophogram, indicated an oesophageal obstruction. Prior to treatment, the cat's condition deteriorated and it was euthanised at the owner's request. Post-mortem examination revealed a gastro-oesophageal intussusception, a trichobezoar impacted into the intussusceptum, and a dilated oesophageal hiatus consistent with a chronic hiatal hernia. Clinical relevance: Gastro-oesophageal intussusception is a rare condition in cats. Its aetiology in relation to a pre-existing hiatal hernia and a trichobezoar is discussed.
Cecal inversion followed by ileocolic intussusception in a cat

Abstract:A cat was presented with a history of constipation, tenesmus, and malaise. Ultrasonography revealed an ileocolic intussusception and cecal inversion. Surgical findings included an easily reducible intussusception and an inverted cecum that was moderately difficult to reduce. A typhlectomy and bowel plication was performed. The cat had an uneventful recovery.

Abstract:An eight-month-old domestic shorthair cat was presented with chronic vomiting for three months, with an acute increase in frequency during the past two days. A diagnosis of megaoesophagus was made by chest radiography. Diagnostic work-up for megaoesophagus was performed. A gastro-oesophageal intussusception was identified during endoscopy. Medical and nutritional therapy was instituted with a good response to the treatment.
Caecocolic intussusception associated with a caecal polyp and concurrent hepatocellular carcinoma in a cat

Abstract:Case summary: A 17-year-old female neutered domestic shorthair cat presented for several days of reduced faecal volume and a rectal prolapse. Physical examination revealed a 2 cm rectal prolapse, hepatomegaly and a low body condition score of 3/9. Haematology and biochemistry revealed a mild non-regenerative anaemia (haematocrit 24.5%; reference interval [RI] 30.3-52.3%), a mild mature neutrophilia (16.21 × 109/l; RI 1.48-10.29 × 109/l) and a mild increase in alanine aminotransferase activity (222 IU/l; RI 12-130 IU/l). Abdominal radiographs identified hepatomegaly. The rectal prolapse was reduced under general anaesthesia. Abdominal ultrasound identified a caecocolic intussusception and a large hepatic mass. Thoracic radiographs were unremarkable. Hepatic fine-needle aspirate cytology revealed well-differentiated hepatocytes. A typhlectomy was performed and the quadrate liver lobe, with mass, was resected. Gross examination of the caecum identified a focal polyp; histopathology showed moderate plasmacytic-lymphocytic typhlitis and reactive mucosal-associated lymphoid tissue. The hepatic mass was diagnosed as a well-differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma. Six weeks postoperatively the cat had gained 0.5 kg, had an improved body condition score of 5/9 and resolution of clinical signs. The cat died acutely 1 year later from an unknown cause. Relevance and novel information: Caecocolic intussusception is rare in cats and uncommon in dogs. This is the third report in a cat and the first associated with a caecal polyp. As reported in dogs, the outcome following surgery was good. Hepatocellular carcinoma is a rarely reported feline neoplasm, which may have a good prognosis with surgical resection.

Abstract:Three adult patients were presented with sudden onset of intestinal signs. An intestinal intussusception was diagnosed in all three cases by ultrasound and exploratory celiotomy. Three different benign intraluminal tumours were the eliciting cause of intussusception. The tumours had equal macroscopic appearance consisting of a stalk attached to the intestinal wall with the bulk of the tumour floating in the chyme. Enterectomy without enteroplication of the concerned intestinal part cured the animals.

Abstract:An adult female domestic shorthair cat was evaluated for chronic upper respiratory disease and vomiting. A diagnosis of idiopathic megaesophagus with intermittent gastroesophageal intussusception (GEI) was made based on radiographic and endoscopic examinations. The GEI was manually reduced by use of a stomach tube during the endoscopic procedure. An incisional gastropexy was performed to prevent recurrence. Gastroesophageal intussusception is a rare condition in cats. In dogs it is usually associated with rapid progression of clinical signs, culminating in death. In this cat, the condition was associated with chronic signs, probably due to the intermittent nature of the GEI.

Abstract:<p>Intestinal intussusceptions most often occur in young dogs and cats. Common locations for intestinal intussusceptions include enterocolic, eneteroenteric or colocolic. Ultrasonography is highly reliable for diagnosing of intussusception and for prediction of its reducibility. Abdominal structures that may mimic intussuception can be seen ultrasonographically. Intussusceptions is a surgical emergency. Immediate stabilization of the animal followed by manual reduction or intestinal excision of the affected intestine through midline celiotomy are required. Recurrence is a common postsurgical complication. Enteroplication may be considered for recurrence prevention but is not without complications. Prognosis is good in uncomplicated cases.</p>

Abstract:Intussusception associated with lymphoma of the ileocaecocolic junction was diagnosed in a 12-year-old female domestic short-haired cat that presented with a 3-week history of diarrhoea and a protruding anal mass. Surgical exploration revealed an ileocolonic intussusception proximal to the mass at the ileocaecal junction which was excised. A diagnosis of ileocaecocolic lymphosarcoma was made and euthanasia was later performed. This is an unusual case of an ileocaecal junction tumour that manifested as a rectal prolapse associated with intussusception in a cat.

Abstract:In this study, the operative treatment results of foreign body ingestion cases in 12 cats brought to Surgery Clinic of Siirt University Animal Health Practice and Research Hospital with various complaints between 2020 and 2023 were evaluated. As a result of radiographic examination, foreign bodies were detected in the stomachs of 3 patients and in the intestines of 9 patients. In the pre-operative period, the blood parameters of the patients were evaluated and all patients were administered fluid therapy and antibacterial treatment for prophylaxis. The foreign body was removed from the relevant area operatively under general anesthesia. In the post operative period, all patients except 1 (case no: 4) included in the study were hospitalized, and appropriate diet and post-operative care were applied. As a result, 11 (91.66%) of the 12 patients who underwent surgery in the study were discharged between post-operative 11th and 21st days without any complications. In the study, it was concluded that operative treatment was necessary in cases of foreign body ingestion in cats and that post-operative care was of great importance in prognosis.
Ileocolic junction resection in dogs and cats: 18 cases

Abstract:There is limited veterinary literature about dogs or cats with ileocolic junction resection and its long-term follow-up. To evaluate the long-term outcome in a cohort of dogs and cats that underwent resection of the ileocolic junction without extensive (≥50%) small or large bowel resection. Medical records of dogs and cats that had the ileocolic junction resected were reviewed. Follow-up information was obtained either by telephone interview or e-mail correspondence with the referring veterinary surgeons. Nine dogs and nine cats were included. The most common cause of ileocolic junction resection was intussusception in dogs (5/9) and neoplasia in cats (6/9). Two dogs with ileocolic junction lymphoma died postoperatively. Only 2 of 15 animals, for which long-term follow-up information was available, had soft stools. However, three dogs with suspected chronic enteropathy required long-term treatment with hypoallergenic diets alone or in combination with medical treatment to avoid the development of diarrhoea. Four of 6 cats with ileocolic junction neoplasia were euthanised as a consequence of progressive disease. Dogs and cats undergoing ileocolic junction resection and surviving the perioperative period may have a good long-term outcome with mild or absent clinical signs but long-term medical management may be required.
