Abstract:The Museum of Earth Sciences of the Geological Survey of Pakistan is located at Quetta, Balochistan province of Pakistan. This museum is the largest and oldest museum in the country, containing a variety of national and international collections of minerals, rocks, and fossils collected from 1820 AD to 2021. The museum host variety of collection ranging from thousands of mineral samples, vertebrate and invertebrate fossils, gemstone, dimension stone, meteorite, recent lava, and archeological samples. The archeological samples of 9-ka-old Mehergarh civilization are also part of the museum. The museum is divided into different galleries based on the types and geography of samples. We aimed to evaluate the MESGSP as a possible potential geosite by analyzing its contribution to country's geological heritage and enhancing and promoting its collection as a geotouristic attraction. The work involved two phases: (i) describing the museum and its surroundings and (ii) the evaluation of the museum using the Brilha method and a geosite assessment model (GAM) method to define the strategies for museum development. The results obtained by the semi-quantitative evaluation of the geosite with the Brilha method reflect high scientific (350/400), educational (340/400), and touristic (375/400) appeal. The applied GAM shows the museum as a geosite with high principal and additional value, placing it in the Z33 field of the global valuation matrix. In addition, the semi-quantitative and qualitative evaluation made it possible to describe the importance of the museum and its collection in the development of the area. The study qualified the museum as a geosite with an appropriate valuation, an example of ex situ geological heritage conservation, and a basis for geotourism development.
