Abstract:Population growth and current consumption and production patterns have led to an increased demand for vital resources and services, such as water, energy and food. The complex interactions between these three vital flows for human wellbeing and sustainable development are referred to as the 'Food–Energy–Water (FEW) nexus'. Today, FEW flows face growing demand and an increasingly limited supply at global scale. In fact, human dependence on food, energy and water is expected to increase by 35%, 50%, and 40%, respectively, by 2030. For this reason, FEW systems must be regarded in a holistic and integrated manner, paying particular attention to their interrelationships due to increasing scarcity in the context of a growing economy, climate crisis as well as urbanisation.
