Abstract:Ecosystem dynamics are shaped by plant adaptation to environmental stress, yet the conditions under which this occurs remain poorly understood. We developed a theoretical framework to predict how strategies used by tropical trees to cope with low-phosphorus (P) availability (that is, traits related to P uptake, and use) influence growth under P limitation. We then tested this framework against data on tree species in Borneo and a meta-analysis of results from pantropical nutrient addition experiments. Our theoretical framework predicts that plant traits associated with low-P environments, including enhanced P allocation to leaves, efficient P resorption, and root phosphatase activity, alleviate the negative effects of P scarcity more strongly for "inefficiently" growing plants, represented by large trees and old-growth forests, compared with saplings or secondary forests. In agreement with this prediction, changes in traits related to low-P environments increased the potential relative growth rate of large trees more than small trees in Borneo. Finally, theoretical expectation was supported by a meta-analysis which revealed stronger P limitation in saplings and secondary forests than in old-growth forests. Together, these findings provide a novel framework to interpret the relationship between resource constraints and plant performance and reinforce the importance of accounting for plant adaption to predict ecosystem responses to P limitation in tropical forests.

Plant phosphorus-use and -acquisition strategies in Amazonia

Abstract:In the tropical rainforest of Amazonia, phosphorus (P) is one of the main nutrients controlling forest dynamics, but its effects on the future of the forest biomass carbon (C) storage under elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations remain uncertain. Soils in vast areas of Amazonia are P-impoverished, and little is known about the variation or plasticity in plant P-use and -acquisition strategies across space and time, hampering the accuracy of projections in vegetation models. Here, we synthesize current knowledge of leaf P resorption, fine-root P foraging, arbuscular mycorrhizal symbioses, and root acid phosphatase and organic acid exudation and discuss how these strategies vary with soil P concentrations and in response to elevated atmospheric CO2 . We identify knowledge gaps and suggest ways forward to fill those gaps. Additionally, we propose a conceptual framework for the variations in plant P-use and -acquisition strategies along soil P gradients of Amazonia. We suggest that in soils with intermediate to high P concentrations, at the plant community level, investments are primarily directed to P foraging strategies via roots and arbuscular mycorrhizas, whereas in soils with intermediate to low P concentrations, investments shift to prioritize leaf P resorption and mining strategies via phosphatases and organic acids.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) is an essential macronutrient for crop development and production. Phosphate starvation response 1 (PHR1) acts as the central regulator for Pi-signaling and Pi-homeostasis in plants by binding to the -element PHR1 binding sequence (P1BS; GNATATNC). However, how phosphate starvation-induced gene expression is regulated remains obscure. In this work, we investigated the DNA binding affinity of the PHR1 ortholog OsPHR2 to its downstream target genes in (rice). We confirmed that a combination of P1BS and P1BS-like motifs are essential for stable binding by OsPHR2. Furthermore, we report that variations in P1BS motif bases affected the binding affinity of OsPHR2 and that the highest affinity motif was GaATATtC (designated the A–T-type P1BS). We also found that a combination of two A–T-type P1BS elements in tandem, namely HA-P1BS, was very efficient for binding of OsPHR2. Using the -regulator HA-P1BS, we modified the promoters of (), a key factor controlling endoplasmic reticulum-exit of phosphate transporters to the plasma membrane, for efficient uptake of phosphorous in an energetically neutral way. Transgenic plants with the modified promoters showed significantly enhanced tolerance to low phosphate stress in both solution and soil conditions, which provides a new strategy for crop improvement to enhance tolerance of nutrient deficiency.
Nutrient acquisition strategies augment growth in tropical N2 -fixing trees in nutrient-poor soil and under elevated CO2

Abstract:Tropical forests play a dominant role in the global carbon (C) cycle, and models predict increases in tropical net primary productivity (NPP) and C storage in response to rising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2 ) concentrations. The extent to which increasing CO2 will enhance NPP depends in part on the availability of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) to support growth. Some tropical trees can potentially overcome nutrient limitation by acquiring N via symbiotic dinitrogen (N2 ) fixation, which may provide a benefit in acquiring P via investment in N-rich phosphatase enzymes or arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. We conducted a seedling experiment to investigate the effects of elevated CO2 and soil nutrient availability on the growth of two N2 -fixing and two non-N2 -fixing tropical tree species. We hypothesized that under elevated CO2 and at low nutrient availability (i.e., low N and P), N2 fixers would have higher growth rates than non-N2 fixers because N2 fixers have a greater capacity to acquire both N and P. We also hypothesized that differences in growth rates between N2 fixers and non-N2 fixers would decline as nutrient availability increases because N2 fixers no longer have an advantage in nutrient acquisition. We found that the N2 fixers had higher growth rates than the non-N2 fixers under elevated CO2 and at low nutrient availability, and that the difference in growth rates between the N2 and non-N2 fixers declined as nutrient availability increased, irrespective of CO2 . Overall, N2 fixation, root phosphatase activity, and AM colonization decreased with increasing nutrient availability, and increased under elevated CO2 at low nutrient availability. Further, AM colonization was positively related to the growth of the non-N2 fixers, whereas both N2 fixation and root phosphatase activity were positively related to the growth of the N2 fixers. Though our results indicate all four tree species have the capacity to up- or down-regulate nutrient acquisition to meet their stoichiometric demands, the greater capacity for the N2 fixers to acquire both N and P may enable them to overcome nutritional constraints to NPP under elevated CO2 , with implications for the response of tropical forests to future environmental change.
Foliar Phosphorus Allocation and Photosynthesis Reveal Plants' Adaptative Strategies to Phosphorus Limitation in Tropical Forests at Different Successional Stages.

Abstract:High atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition and low soil phosphorus (P) availability occur simultaneously in tropical areas, and thus tropical plants need to adapt nutrient-use strategies to maintain growth and survival. Therefore, identifying the adaptative strategies of tropical plants at different successional stages under low soil P availability is indispensable. Here, we separately investigated foliar traits, photosynthetic characteristics, and P fractions of 8 species in the primary and secondary tropical forests after 10 years of N and P fertilization. P addition increased foliar P concentrations and deceased N:P ratio in the primary forest and secondary forest. The foliar photosynthetic rates did not significantly respond to nutrient additions, and the foliar photosynthetic P-use efficiency (PPUE) reduced under the P addition in the primary forest. In contrast, the foliar photosynthetic rates and photosynthetic nitrogen (N)-use efficiency (PNUE) were enhanced with nutrient additions in the secondary forest. The allocations of foliar nucleic acid P and residual P were reduced by P addition in the primary forest, whereas the allocation of metabolic P was enhanced and the allocation of residual P was reduced by P addition in the secondary forest. Additionally, a higher proportion of structural P was found in the primary forest, and a higher proportion of metabolic P was observed in the secondary forest. Interesting, structural equation model analysis revealed that the plants decreased the allocation of foliar nucleic acid P and increased the allocation of structural P in the primary forest, thereby reducing photosynthetic rates. Whereas the plants enhanced photosynthetic rates by promoting PPUE and the allocation of foliar metabolic P in the secondary forest.Our findings highlighted tropical plants at different successional stages can reasonably allocate foliar P to regulate photosynthetic rates and acclimate to low P environments.
Leaf nitrogen to phosphorus ratios of tropical trees: experimental assessment of physiological and environmental controls

Abstract:We investigated the variation in leaf nitrogen to phosphorus ratios of tropical tree and liana seedlings as a function of the relative growth rate, whole-plant water-use efficiency, soil water content and fertilizer addition. First, seedlings of 13 tree and liana species were grown individually in 38-l pots prepared with a homogeneous soil mixture. Second, seedlings of three tree species were grown in 19-l pots at high or low soil water content, and with or without added fertilizer containing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. For plants grown under common soil conditions, leaf nitrogen to phosphorus ratios showed a unimodal, or hump-shaped, relationship with the relative growth rate. The leaf nitrogen to phosphorus ratio increased in response to low soil water content in three species, and increased in response to fertilizer addition in two of the three species. Across all species and treatments, the leaf nitrogen to phosphorus ratio was positively correlated with the water-use efficiency. The results suggest that the within-site variation among tropical tree species in the leaf nitrogen to phosphorus ratio may be caused by associations between this ratio and the relative growth rate. Modification of the soil environment changed the leaf nitrogen to phosphorus ratio, but underlying associations between this ratio and the relative growth rate were generally maintained. The observed correlation between the leaf nitrogen to phosphorus ratio and water-use efficiency has implications for linking nutrient stoichiometry with plant transpiration.
Negative effects of long-term phosphorus additions on understory plants in a primary tropical forest

Abstract:Human activities have disturbed global phosphorus (P) cycling by introducing substantial amounts of P to natural ecosystems. Although natural P gradients and fertilization studies have found that plant community traits are closely related to P availability, it remains unclear how increased P supply affects plant growth and diversity in P-deficient tropical forests. We used a decadal P-addition experiment (2007–2017) to study the effects of increased P input on plant growth and diversity in understory layer in tropical forests. We monitored the dynamics of seedling growth, survival rate, and diversity of understory plants throughout the fertilization period under control and P addition at 15 g P m−2 yr−1. To identify the drivers of responses, P concentration, photosynthesis rate and nonstructural carbon were analyzed. Results showed that long-term P addition significantly increased P concentrations both in soil pools and plant tissues. However, P addition did not increase the light-saturated photosynthesis rate or growth rate of the understory plants. Furthermore, P addition significantly decreased the survival rate of seedlings and reduced the species richness and density of understory plants. The negative effects of P addition may be attributed to an increased carbon cost due to the tissue maintenance of plants with higher P concentrations. These findings indicate that increased P supply alone is not necessary to benefit the growth of plants in ecosystems with low P availability, and P inputs can inhibit understory plants and may alter community composition. Therefore, we appeal to a need for caution when inputting P to tropical forests ecosystems.

Abstract:Wet tropical forests play an important role in the global carbon (C) cycle, but given current rates of land‐use change, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) limitation could reduce productivity in regenerating forests in this biome. Whereas the strong controls of climate and parent material over forest recovery are well known, the influence of vegetation can be difficult to determine. We addressed species‐specific differences in plant traits and their relationships to ecosystem properties and processes, relevant to N and P supply to regenerating vegetation in experimental plantations in a single site in lowland wet forest in Costa Rica. Single‐tree species were planted in a randomized block design, such that climate, soil (an Oxisol), and land‐use history were similar for all species. In years 15–25 of the experiment, we measured traits regarding N and P acquisition and use in four native, broad‐leaved, evergreen tree species, including differential effects on soil pH, in conjunction with biomass and soil stocks and fluxes of N and P. Carbon biomass stocks increased significantly with increasing soil pH (p = 0.0184, previously reported) as did biomass P stocks (p = 0.0011). Abstract:BACKGROUND:Phosphorus (P) is an essential element for plant growth and development but it is often a limiting nutrient in soils. Hence, P acquisition from soil by plant roots is a subject of considerable interest in agriculture, ecology and plant root biology. Root architecture, with its shape and structured development, can be considered as an evolutionary response to scarcity of resources. SCOPE:This review discusses the significance of root architecture development in response to low P availability and its beneficial effects on alleviation of P stress. It also focuses on recent progress in unravelling cellular, physiological and molecular mechanisms in root developmental adaptation to P starvation. The progress in a more detailed understanding of these mechanisms might be used for developing strategies that build upon the observed explorative behaviour of plant roots. CONCLUSIONS:The role of root architecture in alleviation of P stress is well documented. However, this paper describes how plants adjust their root architecture to low-P conditions through inhibition of primary root growth, promotion of lateral root growth, enhancement of root hair development and cluster root formation, which all promote P acquisition by plants. The mechanisms for activating alterations in root architecture in response to P deprivation depend on changes in the localized P concentration, and transport of or sensitivity to growth regulators such as sugars, auxins, ethylene, cytokinins, nitric oxide (NO), reactive oxygen species (ROS) and abscisic acid (ABA). In the process, many genes are activated, which in turn trigger changes in molecular, physiological and cellular processes. As a result, root architecture is modified, allowing plants to adapt effectively to the low-P environment. This review provides a framework for understanding how P deficiency alters root architecture, with a focus on integrated physiological and molecular signalling.

Abstract:In regions of low soil phosphorus (P) availability, such as many tropical and subtropical regions, the cultivation of eucalypts is common due to their adaptation to P-constrained soils. As in other trees, the molecular mechanisms underlying the phosphate starvation response (PSR) in eucalypts remain poorly understood. This study aimed to elucidate the molecular responses associated with PSR and assess the efficiency of P acquisition in five eucalypt species: Eucalyptus acmenoides , E. grandis , E. globulus , E. tereticornis , and Corymbia maculata . A greenhouse experiment was carried out in soil/substrate with low resin-extractable P (4.5 mg kg −1 , Low P) and sufficient P (10.8 mg kg −1 , Sufficient P) availability. After nine months growing in such conditions, various parameters were assessed, such as biomass production, P concentrations, P uptake efficiency (PUpE), and the expression of PSR-related genes. Overall, eucalypt plants exhibited a relatively weak response to low P availability, with slight variations in biomass production, P concentration, and PSR gene expression. C. maculata plants exhibited the highest PUpE under low P, while E. globulus exhibited the lowest. Among PSR-related genes, LPR1/2 in the roots of E. grandis , PDR2 in the roots of C. maculata , and phosphate transporters PHT1;6 and PHT1;8 in the roots of E. globulus , along with PHT1;12 in the roots of E. tereticornis , were induced under low P availability. Elevated PHT1 transcripts in the roots under sufficient P conditions, despite adequate leaf P concentrations, suggest potential interactions with other nutrient availability such as nitrogen, magnesium, and calcium, as well as symbiotic associations. Additionally, the upregulation SQD1 gene involved in membrane lipid remodeling in leaves of E. tereticornis , E. acmenoides , and C. maculata under low P suggests an improved P utilization efficiency. This study reveals the intricate and multifaceted nature of eucalypt responses to soil P availability. Despite the low P concentrations, eucalypt plants maintained foliar concentrations similar to those in the P-sufficient treatment suggesting a complex interplay of factors influencing PSR including nutrient balance.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) is a pivotal nutrient for all life on Earth. It is poorly mobile in soil and inorganic P concentrations in the soil solution are <0.6 to 11 μM. Organic P concentrations in the soil solution tend to be higher, but organic P needs to be hydrolysed before it can be taken up by plant roots. Such hydrolysis involves phosphatases that are either released from the roots or derived from microorganisms in the rhizosphere. A large fraction of soil P is sorbed onto soil particles, and hence is unavailable to most plants. Roots that release large amounts of Psolubilising carboxylates can access some of this sorbed P. Rates of P uptake from the soil solution are determined predominantly by the movement of P in soil. Root traits that enhance P movement in soil increase P acquisition; however, the kinetic properties of P transporters that take up this P have little effect on net P uptake. The downregulation of genes encoding these transporters is important to avoid P toxicity at a high P supply. Species or genotypes that lack the capacity to downregulate their P-uptake capacity typically show P-toxicity symptoms at a high P supply. Mycorrhizal symbionts increase the soil volume that is available for P acquisition. Attempts to select or engineer genotypes with greater P-uptake capacities should consider both root and soil characteristics, including soil microorganisms such as mycorrhizal fungi.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) limitation and water stress can affect trees' growth, yet differing levels of nutrition under drought may have negative or positive effects on their growth and metabolism. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of P nutrition upon growth and metabolism in drought-stressed Phoebe zhennan (an endangered forest tree species) seedlings, to provide a basis for strengthening its conservation in the face of future climate change. A complete randomized design was used to investigate the effects of four different levels of P fertilization (no P, low P, moderate P, and high P) under water stress on the growth, photosynthesis, and nitrogen metabolism of P. zhennan. Drought-stressed seedlings under high P (HP) application had enhanced growth, while moderate P (MP) application improved their root biomass and leaf area only, whereas low P (LP) did not significantly affect any growth trait. Moreover, HP fertilization had positive effects on leaf relative water contents (LRWCs), while HP and MP both significantly improved photosynthetic traits vis-à-vis non-fertilized seedlings. The concentration of soluble sugars was significantly higher in non-fertilized than fertilized seedlings as were nitrogenous compounds (NO3− and NH4+) and nitrogen metabolic enzymes (NR, GDH, GOGAT, and GS) activities. Both NO3−and NH4+concentrations were significantly decreased under HP application compared with the non-fertilized counterparts. The plant traits improved under HP application counteracted the adverse impact of low nitrate availability and promoted seedling growth. Low-dose fertilization produces depressive effects in P. zhennan, but a high P concentration can overcome those negative effects to improve growth.

Abstract:Rapid increase of global nitrogen (N) deposition has greatly altered carbon cycles and functioning of forest ecosystems. Previous studies have focused on changes in carbon dynamics of temperate and subtropical forests through N enrichment experiments; however, the effects of N deposition on tree growth remain inconsistent, especially in tropical forests. Here, we conducted a five-year N addition experiment (0 and 50kgNha−1yr−1) in a tropical montane rain forest in Hainan Island, China, to explore the effects of enhanced N deposition on growth of trees. We also set phosphorus (P) treatment (50kgPha−1yr−1) and N+P treatment (50kgNha−1yr−1+50kgPha−1yr−1) to examine potential P limitation driven by N deposition. Our results showed that N addition has not significantly influenced tree growth, while P addition significantly increased the relative growth rate of small (diameter at breast height, DBH≤10cm) and medium (10<DBH≤20cm) trees. The combined N and P addition accelerated the growth of small trees, but did not affect the growth of medium and large (20cm<DBH) trees. These contrasting effects of N and P addition on tree growth indicate that the tropical montane forest is mainly limited by P, which suggests the importance of P in regulating growth of trees in tropical forests.
Warming drives sustained plant phosphorus demand in a humid tropical forest

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) is often one of the most limiting nutrients in highly weathered soils of humid tropical forests and may regulate the responses of carbon (C) feedback to climate warming. However, the response of P to warming at the ecosystem level in tropical forests is not well understood because previous studies have not comprehensively assessed changes in multiple P processes associated with warming. Here, we detected changes in the ecosystem P cycle in response to a 7-year continuous warming experiment by translocating model plant-soil ecosystems across a 600-m elevation gradient, equivalent to a temperature change of 2.1°C. We found that warming increased plant P content (55.4%) and decreased foliar N:P. Increased plant P content was supplied by multiple processes, including enhanced plant P resorption (9.7%), soil P mineralization (15.5% decrease in moderately available organic P), and dissolution (6.8% decrease in iron-bound inorganic P), without changing litter P mineralization and leachate P. These findings suggest that warming sustained plant P demand by increasing the biological and geochemical controls of the plant-soil P-cycle, which has important implications for C fixation in P-deficient and highly productive tropical forests in future warmer climates.

Abstract:While the adaptation and responses of model plants to phosphorus (P) deficiency are well documented, those of the rubber tree remain unclear. Here, we investigated above‐ and below‐ground responses of rubber tree seedlings over the development of the first to third extension unit in a mesocosm system. Rubber tree seedlings were grown in high and low phosphorus soil for 7 months. Tissue nutrient contents, morphological, and physiological traits were quantified. We found that low P significantly reduced leaf P content, photosynthetic capabilities, and induced the accumulation of phenolic and flavonoid compounds, particularly in old leaves. Root traits were significantly affected by P stress early in their development. Root surface area and volume were increased through reduced lateral root branching and increased lateral root length. The alteration of root architectural traits took place prior to the reduction of P content in roots and leaves. Our findings provide new insights into rubber tree physiology and the effective fertilization management of rubber plantation in low P soils.

Abstract:<p>Resorption is the active withdrawal of nutrients before leaf abscission. This mechanism represents an important strategy to maintain efficient nutrient cycling; however, resorption is poorly characterized in old-growth tropical forests growing in nutrient-poor soils. We investigated nutrient resorption from leaves in 39 tree species in two tropical forests on the Guiana Shield, French Guiana, to investigate whether resorption efficiencies varied with soil nutrient, seasonality, and species traits. The stocks of P in leaves, litter, and soil were low at both sites, indicating potential P limitation of the forests. Accordingly, mean resorption efficiencies were higher for P (35.9%) and potassium (K; 44.6%) than for nitrogen (N; 10.3%). K resorption was higher in the wet (70.2%) than in the dry (41.7%) season. P resorption increased slightly with decreasing total soil P; and N and P resorptions were positively related to their foliar concentrations. We conclude that nutrient resorption is a key plant nutrition strategy in these old-growth tropical forests, that trees with high foliar nutrient concentration reabsorb more nutrient, and that nutrients resorption in leaves, except P, are quite decoupled from nutrients in the soil. Seasonality and biochemical limitation played a role in the resorption of nutrients in leaves, but species-specific requirements obscured general tendencies at stand and ecosystem level.</p>

Abstract:Summary Soil phosphorus (P) is a growth‐limiting nutrient in tropical ecosystems, driving diverse P‐acquisition strategies among plants. Particularly, mining for inorganic P through phosphomonoesterase (PME) activity is essential, given the substantial proportion of organic P in soils. Yet, the relationship between PME activity and other nutrient‐acquisition root traits remains unclear. We measured root PME activity and commonly measured root traits, including root diameter, specific root length (SRL), root tissue density (RTD), and nitrogen concentration ([N]) in 18 co‐occurring species across soils with varying P availability to better understand trees response to P supply. Root [N] and RTD were inversely related, and that axis was not clearly related to soil P supply. Both traits, however, correlated positively and negatively with PME activity, which responded strongly to P supply. Conversely, root diameter was inversely related to SRL, but this axis was not related to P supply. This pattern suggests that limiting similarity influenced variation along the diameter–SRL axis, explaining local trait diversity. Meanwhile, variation along the root [N]–RTD axis might best reflect environmental filtering. Overall, P availability indicator traits such as PME activity and root hairs only tended to be associated with these axes, highlighting limitations of these axes in describing convergent adaptations at local sites.

Abstract:It is commonly assumed that the nitrogen to phosphorus (N:P) ratio of a terrestrial plant reflects the relative availability of N and P in the soil in which the plant grows. Here, this was assessed for a tropical pioneer tree, Ficus insipida. Seedlings were grown in sand and irrigated with nutrient solutions containing N:P ratios ranging from <1 to >100. The experimental design further allowed investigation of physiological responses to N and P availability. Homeostatic control over N:P ratios was stronger in leaves than in stems or roots, suggesting that N:P ratios of stems and roots are more sensitive indicators of the relative availability of N and P at a site than N:P ratios of leaves. The leaf N:P ratio at which the largest plant dry mass and highest photosynthetic rates were achieved was approximately 11, whereas the corresponding whole-plant N:P ratio was approximately 6. Plant P concentration varied as a function of transpiration rate at constant nutrient solution P concentration, possibly due to transpiration-induced variation in the mass flow of P to root surfaces. The transpiration rate varied in response to nutrient solution N concentration, but not to nutrient solution P concentration, demonstrating nutritional control over transpiration by N but not P. Water-use efficiency varied as a function of N availability, but not as a function of P availability.

Abstract:Phosphatases play a vital role in phosphorus (P) acquisition for both plant roots and soil microbes. However, how this P-acquisition strategy responds to exogenous nitrogen (N) and P input in tropical forests of different suc-cessional stages remains unclear. Using the 7-yr N and P addition experiment in two tropical montane forests under different successional stages (primary and secondary), we investigated the responses of root and soil acid phosphatase (AcP) activity to nutrient addition. Results showed that in both the primary and secondary forest, there is a general pattern that root and soil AcP were both enhanced by N addition while suppressed by P addition and NP addition, but the effect varies between two sources and between two forest types. Specifically, P addition significantly reduced root AcP activity by 74.8% in the secondary forest, while reduced soil AcP activity by 42.8% in the primary forest; only root AcP activity in the primary forest was significantly enhanced with increasing N addition rates. Both root and soil AcP activities were negatively correlated with soil total P when data from two forest types were combined, whereas no significant relationship was detected between soil available P and root or soil AcP activity in the primary forest or in the secondary forest. Moreover, root AcP activity was significantly higher in the slow-growth primary forest (12.3 mu mol g-1 h-1) compared to the fast -growth secondary forest (6.3 mu mol g-1 h-1). Overall, we verified the widespread pattern that N addition in-creases while P addition suppresses soil AcP activity and found a similar pattern in root AcP activity in two tropical montane forests, indicating that plants and soil microbes have consistent responses to nutrient addition. We also emphasized the potential role of the successional stage of tropical forests in regulating root AcP activity.

Abstract:Soil nutrient restrictions are the main environmental conditions limiting plant growth, development, yield, and quality. Phosphorus (P), an essential macronutrient, is one of the most significant factors that vastly restrains the growth and development of plants. Although the total P is rich in soil, its bio-available concentration is still unable to meet the requirements of plants. To maintain P homeostasis, plants have developed lots of intricate responsive and acclimatory mechanisms at different levels, which contribute to administering the acquisition of inorganic phosphate (Pi), translocation, remobilization, and recycling of Pi. In recent years, significant advances have been made in the exploration of the utilization of P in annual plants, while the research progress in woody perennial plants is still vague. In the meanwhile, compared to annual plants, relevant reviews about P utilization in woody perennial plants are scarce. Therefore, based on the importance of P in the growth and development of plants, we briefly reviewed the latest advances on the genetic and molecular mechanisms of plants to uphold P homeostasis, P sensing, and signaling, ion transporting and metabolic regulation, and proposed the possible sustainable management strategies to fasten the P cycle in modern agriculture and new directions for future studies.
