Abstract:Straw mulching is a typical soil and water conservation measure for slope farms, and it plays an important role in preventing soil erosion. The objective of this study was to quantify the effects of the length and coverage of wheat straw on infiltration, runoff and soil loss. In this study, an indoor simulated rainfall experiment was used to study the characteristics of infiltration, runoff and sediment yield under different straw lengths and coverage when the rainfall intensity was 90 mm h−1. The results show that the straw mulch contributes more to the effect of infiltration, runoff and sediment yield than straw length. Increasing the straw coverage increases the average infiltration rate and reduces the cumulative runoff and sediment yield. An increase in straw length, however, reduces the average infiltration rate of the slope and increases the cumulative runoff and sediment yield. The benefits of straw mulch in increasing average infiltration and reducing runoff and sediment yield are consistent with the law of diminishing marginal returns. The marginal benefit of straw is optimal when the straw cover is 3.5 t·hm−2. The sum of straw mulch and length multiplied by cover divided by length has a power function relationship with slope infiltration, while runoff and sediment yield have a power function relationship with its reciprocal. The average infiltration rate of the slope surface is significantly linearly related to the cumulative sediment yield. The simulation accuracy of the Horton model is higher than that of the Kostiakov model. In this study, when the straw length was 3–5 cm and the mulch rate was 4.5 t·hm−2, the average slope infiltration was highest, and the runoff and sediment yield were lowest. Wheat straw surface mulch, when applied as an effective measure for controlling soil erosion and maintaining soil and water resources on sloped fields, can effectively increase infiltration and reduce runoff and sediment yield; wheat mulch is thus critical for the sustainable development of agriculture and ecology on sloping land. An increase in straw length, reduces the infiltration rate and increases the runoff and sediment yield. The benefits of straw mulch are consistent with the law of diminishing marginal returns. The sum of straw mulch and length multiplied by cover divided by length has a power function relationship with slope infiltration, while slope runoff and sand production have a power function relationship with its reciprocal.

Abstract:A field experiment including straw mulching in different amounts was set in Weibei Loess Plateau of Shaanxi Province to make clear the effect of straw mulching on grain filling and yield of winter wheat from Sept.2007 to Jun.2008.The quantity of straw mulching had four levels of 9 000 kg/hm2 mulching(SM9),6 000 kg/hm2 mulching(SM6),3 000 kg/hm2 mulching(SM3)and non-mulching(CK). The results indicated that in the slightly increasing stage,the grain filling rate of four treatments decreased gradually in the following order: CK,SM3,SM6 and SM9;However,in the fast and the slowly increasing stage,the grain filling rate of control was different with the slightly increasing stage.The grain filling rate can be arranged in the following order as SM3SM6CKSM9.The grain filling duration of SM9 was longer than contrast's 6d,SM6 and SM3's grain filling duration were almost the same as control's.During the fast and the slowly increasing stage,the contribution rate of SM9,SM6 and SM3 were all larger than control's,while in contrary for the slightly increasing stage.Compared with control,the amounts of 3 000 kg/hm2 could increase winter wheat yields after one year coverage.The SM3 treatment increased significantly 5.9% than control's.According to the research,SM3's production increase was mainly due to the grain filling rate was higher than control's in the fast and the slowly increasing stage.

Abstract:Straw mulching is a widespread practice for reducing the soil carbon loss caused by erosion. However, the effects of straw mulching on dissolved organic matter (DOM) runoff loss from black soil are not well studied. How straw mulching affects the composition and loss of runoff DOM by changing soil aggregates remains largely unclear. Here, a straw mulching treatment was compared to a no mulching treatment (as a control) on sloping farmland with black soil erosion in Northeast China. We divided the soil into large macroaggregates (>2 mm), small macroaggregates (0.25-2 mm), and microaggregates (<0.25 mm). After five rain events, the effects of straw mulching on the concentration (characterized by dissolved organic carbon) and composition (analyzed by fluorescence spectroscopy) of runoff and soil aggregate DOM were studied. The results showed that straw mulching reduced the runoff amount by 54.7%. Therefore, although straw mulching increased the average dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration in runoff, it reduced the total runoff DOC loss by 48.3%. The composition of runoff DOM is similar to that of soil, as both contain humic-like acid and protein-like components. With straw mulching treatment, the protein-like components in small macroaggregates accumulated and the protein-like components in runoff declined with rain events. Fluorescence spectroscopy technology may help in understanding the hydrological paths of rain events by capturing the dynamic changes of runoff and soil DOM characteristics. A variation partitioning analyses (VPA) analysis indicated that the DOM concentration and composition of microaggregates explained 68.2% of the change in runoff DOM from no mulching plots, while the change in runoff DOM from straw mulching plots was dominated by small macroaggregates at a rate of 55.1%. Taken together, our results demonstrated that straw mulching reduces the fragmentation of small macroaggregates and the loss of microaggregates, thus effecting DOM compositions in soil and reducing the DOM loss in runoff. These results provide a theoretical basis for reducing carbon loss in sloping farmland.

Abstract:To systematically study the soil and water conservation functions of different straw mulching application rates on sloping farmland in karst area of Southwest China, the observation of runoff plots was carried out with natural rainfall. The effects of six mulching gradients (0, 1.111, 2.222, 3.889, 5.556, 6.944 Mg ha−1) on soil and water conservation functions (soil moisture, nutrients, runoff and sediment yields) were showed: with an increasing straw mulching, total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), soil moisture and available nutrients increased, and high straw mulching (SM4 and SM5) made them significantly higher than control, but there was no significant difference between SM4 and SM5; the contents of soil moisture, TOC, TN, TP and available nutrients of mulching treatments in 2019 except for total potassium (TK) were higher than those in 2018; with an increasing straw mulching, the runoff and sediment yields decreased exponentially, while the straw mulching reached 5.556–6.944 Mg ha−1, it didn't change significantly. These results suggested that straw mulching about 6 Mg ha−1 should be adopted for sloping farmland in karst area of Southwest China, and appropriate K fertilizer should be added to maintain the balance of K in soil.

Abstract:Straw mulching farming is currently an effective dry farming technique for improving arid soil environments. Straw mulching technology can increase the infiltration capacity of soil water and improve crop yield and water use efficiency. In this study, the aim is to improve the soil water holding capacity, water retaining capacity, and comprehensive water use efficiency of crops in dry farmland. First, the response surface model is used to study and analyse the optimal parameters of straw returning and its mulching technology, and then, the crop yield, water consumption, and comprehensive water use efficiency of spring corn under different mulching conditions during 2017-2019 are studied. The test results show that the optimized parameters obtained by the response surface model are as follows: film thickness is 0.03 mm, straw returning amount is 4500 kg/hm2, straw particle size is 5 mm, and straw returning depth is 25 mm. At this time, the maximum soil water storage can reach 404.50 mm. The results of the straw mulching test show that under 4500 kg/hm2 mulching, the soil has more water storage, higher soil water content, and a simultaneous increase in water consumption, which is conducive to the efficient use of limited precipitation by crops. The field experiment for three years shows that 4500 kg/hm2 straw (wheat) mulching in the dry farming area of southern Ningxia can better store water and protect soil moisture, promote the virtuous cycle of farmland soil water, and show outstanding performance in improving corn yield and water use efficiency, which can be popularized and implemented in spring corn production in this area.

Abstract:Runoff loss and soil erosion are the main factors threatening grain production in the corn belt of northeast China (CBNC) and are closely related to the planting pattern, row direction, and practice of straw mulching. A 4-year (2017–2020) field experiment was conducted under natural rainfall conditions from 2017 to 2020 to ascertain the effects of the planting pattern, including continuous corn (C), perennial alfalfa (A), and soybean-corn rotation (S-C); row direction including parallel slope (PS) and cross slope (CS); and practice of straw mulching (marked by the subscript SM) on runoff and soil erosion from sloped farmland in the CBNC. Runoff depth and the amount of soil loss under continuous corn with parallel-slope cultivation (PSC) were higher than those of alfalfa with parallel-slope cultivation (PSA) and soybean-corn rotation with parallel-slope cultivation (PSS-PSC) during 2017–2020. Cross-slope planting (CSA, CSC, and CSS-CSC) reduced runoff loss by 7.8–23.3% and the amount of soil erosion by 15.9–73.7% when compared to parallel-slope planting (PSA, PSC, and PSS-PSC). The CSA treatment generated the least runoff depth and soil erosion amount among CSA, CSC, and CSS-CSC. Straw mulching (PSCSM and PSSSM-PSCSM) decreased runoff by 82.6–85.5% and reduced the amount of soil erosion by 87.9–91.5% relative to not using straw mulching treatments (PSC and PSS-PSC). Therefore, cross-slope cultivation and straw mulching can significantly reduce surface runoff and soil erosion on slope farmland. The CSA treatment and the practice of straw mulching were recommended for soil and water conservation in the CBNC.

Abstract:AbstractThe soil water supply is the main factor that limits dryland crop production in China. In a three-year field experiment at a dryland farming experimental station, we evaluated the effects of various straw mulch practices on soil water storage, grain yield and water use efficiency (WUE) of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum). Field experiments were conducted with six different mulch combinations (two different mulch durations and three different mulch amounts): high (SM1; 9000 kg ha−1), medium (SM2; 6000 kg ha−1) and low (SM3; 3000 kg ha−1) straw mulch treatments for the whole period; and high (SM4), medium (SM5) and low (SM6) straw mulch treatments during the growth period only, where the control was the whole period without mulch (CK). Throughout the whole growth period of the three-year experiment, the average soil water content in the 0–200 cm soil layer increased by 0.7–22.5% compared with CK, while the WUE increased significantly by 30.6%, 32.7% and 24.2% with SM1, SM2 and SM3, respectively (P < 0.05). The yield increased by 13.3–23.0% when mulch was provided during the growth period, while the WUE increased by 15.2%, 17.2% and 18.0% with SM4, SM5 and SM6, respectively, compared with CK.

Benefits and Limitations to Straw- and Plastic-Film Mulch on Maize Yield and Water Use Efficiency: A Meta-Analysis Across Hydrothermal Gradients

Abstract:Ridge-furrow mulching can reduce soil evaporation and conserve rainfall, thereby increasing crop yield and water use efficiency (WUE) in dryland cropping systems. In this study, we collected 837 observations from 50 published papers and used meta-analysis to investigate whether ridge-furrow and mulching practices are equally effective on maize yield, WUE and evapotranspiration (ET) across a range of precipitation and temperature gradients and soil types in China. Five practices were included: (i) straw mulch on flat plots (SMF), (ii) straw mulch on ridge-furrow plots (SMR), (iii) plastic mulch on flat plots (PMF), (iv) plastic mulch on ridge-furrow plots (PMR), and (v) flat plots without mulch, which was used as a control (CK). The meta-analysis showed that both straw mulch and plastic mulch significantly increased maize yields and WUE (except for SMR), and that plastic mulch was more effective than straw mulch in increasing yields, particularly in cold and dry environments. PMR has the highest yields and is more effective in clay loam than in silt loam soils. Straw mulch, but particularly plastic mulch, increased the soil moisture compared to the CK, while plastic mulch increased soil temperature, mainly in spring. However, the positive effect of plastic mulch on maize yield diminished with increasing mean growing-season temperature and precipitation, reaching zero (similar to the CK of no mulch and flat plots) when the growing-season precipitation was greater than 770 mm and the mean growing-season air temperature exceeded 24 degrees C. The small benefit of straw mulch (on average about 12%) was similar across the precipitation and temperature gradients, including when the benefits of plastic mulch reached zero. While our analysis has shown the benefits of ridge-furrow plastic mulch on yield and water-use efficiency, it has also highlighted the limitations of the benefits. The results provide a guide to the regions where plastic-film mulch and ridge-furrow planting are likely to improve maize yields and regions where the benefits are likely to be limited.

Abstract:Straw mulching increases soil water availability, but the influence of tillage practices with straw mulching on soil water, soil nitrogen, root distribution, and the physiological response of wheat plants is poorly understood. Field experiments (2013–2017) were conducted to determine the combined effects of straw mulching (0 and 8,000 kg ha −1 ) and tillage methods (no-tillage, rotary tillage, and plow tillage) on soil water, N, root distribution, plant N nutrition, tiller capability, and grain yield of dryland wheat. Straw mulching with no-tillage showed higher soil moisture, mineral N, and Olsen-P content than no-mulch with rotary tillage or plow tillage. These changes increased the total root length and surface area in the 0–20 cm soil layer but not in the 20–40 cm soil layer. Topsoil foraging strategies of root increased total N uptake, wheat return N from straw, and N balance while reducing N surplus, indicating that maize straw harvesting by mulching with no-tillage leads to a more efficient N recycling in the winter wheat–summer maize rotation system. Straw mulching with no-tillage showed greater aboveground plant dry mass and shoot N%, leading to increased plant N nutrition, tillering capability, and grain yield. Our results indicated that maize straw mulch with no-tillage increased fertile spike and grain yield by increasing soil water and N availability and maximizing root-soil interactions among the different combinations studied. Maize straw mulching with no-tillage could hence be recommended to dryland farming communities to transition from rotary tillage to a no-tillage conservation system and to increase soil and crop productivity in the maize-wheat rotation system.

Abstract:Straw strip mulching in maize (Zea mays L.) production is showing a positive effect with the increasing negative effects coming from crop straw and plastic film residues. Therefore, it is imperative to develop comprehensive utilization of straw, and promote the green development of agriculture in rainfed regions. A dryland field experiment was conducted in semiarid northwestern China in 2017 and 2018 and included three treatments: maize straw strip mulching with alternating strips of mulched and non-mulched soil (MSSM), and double ridge-furrow fully mulched soil with white or black plastic film (DRWP or DRBP, respectively). The results show that the interaction between mulching treatment and year significantly influenced maize silage yield, grain yield, biomass yield, aboveground plant water content at silage maize harvest stage, ears ha−1, kernels ear−1, and thousand kernel weight (p < 0.001, p = 0.002, p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.001, and p < 0.001, respectively). For silage, maize growth under straw strip mulching was greater than that of the double ridge mulching system. Silage yield of MSSM was significantly higher than that of DRWP and DRBP, but maize grain and biomass yields under MSSM were significantly lower those under DRWP and DRBP in 2017 and 2018. Compared with the double ridge mulching system, net economic return from silage with MSSM was significantly increased by 28.31% and 20.85% in 2017 and 2018, respectively, and net economic return from grain was 6.67% lower in 2017 and 2.34% higher in 2018. The MSSM treatment exhibited water-temperature coupling; the MSSM treatment significantly reduced soil temperature in the 0–25 cm soil layer by 1.23–2.14 °C and increased soil water storage in the 0–200 cm soil layer by 9.75 and 24.10 mm in 2017 and 2018, respectively, thereby delaying growth development of maize by about 13 days. Therefore, straw mulch can replace plastic film mulch and serve as an environmentally friendly cultivation method for maize in semiarid rainfed regions.

Abstract:Soil salinization severely restricts sustainable agricultural development in the Hetao Irrigation Distract in Inner Mongolia of China. Furthermore, insufficient drainage and over irrigation have aggravated the development of salinization of soil in this area. As such, people are forced to use better and more effective approaches for soil and water management in saline fields to increase crop productivity. The positive effect of both burial of straw interlayer and plastic mulch on the soil infiltration and/or evaporation has been reported, but there is a paucity of information on the effect of combined straw interlayer with plastic mulch, particularly its influence mechanism. With the aim of revealing the beneficial effects of straw interlayer and plastic mulch on water storage and salt control, a laboratory simulation experiment was conducted to study the processes of soil water infiltration and evaporation with the shallow groundwater table, as well as the distribution and transportation of soil water and salt. In the infiltration process, two treatments were designed, including homogenous soil as a control and straw interlayer buried at 40 cm depth. In the consequent process of water evaporation, plastic mulch and non-mulch practices were added respectively based on the previous treatments. The results showed that the straw interlayer buried treatments not only reduced the water infiltration rate and advanced the wetting velocity, but also induced the instability of the wetting front, i.e., the appearance of the preferential flow in the infiltration process. On the other hand, the straw interlayer buried treatments dramatically reduced the groundwater evaporation, and decreased the cumulative evaporation by 75.07%~95.42% during the successive evaporation of 30 days, when compared with the levels of control. In addition, the burial of straw interlayer altered the distribution and transportation of soil water and salt in soil profile. The soil water content in the straw interlayer imposed treatments at the top soil layers was increased while salt content was decreased in the infiltration process, compared to the corresponding ones without the straw interlayer treatments due mainly to the promoted solute leaching efficiency. Primarily, the soil capillary being cut off by the straw interlayer thereby salts up in the straw interlayer buried treatments was controlled, and blocked in the deeper soil layers during the evaporation process. Throughout the experiment, plastic mulch also had an effect of retaining soil moisture and preventing salt accumulating to the surface soil layer. However, the potential effect of mulched with plastic film only on controlling salt accumulation was not as significant as the straw interlayer buried only did. Moreover, the combination of straw interlayer and plastic mulch treatment performed better to prevent water evaporation and salts built-up in the soil than either non-mulch, or the individual use of straw interlayer or plastic mulch. Therefore, a combined straw interlayer and plastic mulch would provide a better edaphic environment for crop growth in agricultural production. The results of this study provide a reference for salt control and water conversation, as well as field management practices in an arid area and saline field.

Abstract:Dryland wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) usually suffers from amplified drought because of the decline in precipitation, and thus conserving soil moisture through mulching with plastic film or straw is inevitable. We carried out a 3-year field experiment to determine the most suitable mulching period and method for dryland wheat production based on grain yield, soil water storage, nitrate-nitrogen (NO3 −-N) leaching, greenhouse gas emission intensity (GHGI) and economic profits. The experiment included two main treatments [summer fallow mulching (SFM) and year-round mulching (YRM)], and three sub-treatments [ridge plastic mulching plus furrow seeding (MP + F), whole-field plastic mulching plus bunch seeding (MP), and crop straw mulching (MS)]. The average grain yields for SFM and YRM were statistically similar. The average grain yields for MP + F, MP and MS were 5501, 5733 and 5690 kg ha−1 under SFM, and 5609, 6488 and 6462 kg ha−1 under YRM, respectively. The MS under YRM achieved the highest economic profit of 1587 US $ ha−1 per season. Both the average and yearly soil water contents before wheat sowing for SFM and YRM were statistically similar. However, MS showed greater potential for soil water storage before sowing, followed by MP and MP + F, under both YRM and SFM. For both SFM and YRM, the NO3 − –N accumulation in the 0–200 cm soil profile at sowing time was significantly higher than at harvest, thus suggesting that no NO3 − –N leaching occurred during the present study. The MS under YRM had the lowest GHGI of 314 kg CO2 eq Mg−1. Therefore, MS under YRM should be recommended to local farmers in dryland areas of China and other similar areas around the world.

Effects of length and application rate of rice straw mulch on surface runoff and soil loss under laboratory simulated rainfall

Abstract:Understanding the effects of rice straw mulch on surface runoff and soil loss is needed.This study examines the effects of straw length and application rates on runoff and erosion rates.Lowest and highest surface covers were measured in plots with 200-mm and 10-mm straw lengths, respectively.200-mm straw length plots had the highest soil loss and the lowest runoff values.10-mm straw mulch applied at 3 Mg/ha minimized soil loss.Forest land affected by deforestation yields high soil and water losses. Suitable management practices need to be found that can reduce these losses and achieve ecological and hydrological sustainability of the deforested areas. Mulch has been found to be effective in reducing soil losses; straw mulch is easy to apply, contributes soil organic matter, and is efficient since the day of application. However, the complex effects of rice straw mulch with different application rates and lengths on surface runoff and soil loss have not been clarified in depth. The current paper evaluates the efficiency of rice straw mulch in reducing the hydrological response of a silty clay loam soil under high intensity and low frequency rainfall events (tap water with total depth of 49 mm and intensity of 98 mm/h) simulated in the laboratory. Surface runoff and soil loss at three lengths of the straw (10, 30, and 200 mm) and three application rates (1, 2, and 3 Mg/ha) were measured in 50 (width) x 100 (length) x 10 (depth) cm plots with disturbed soil samples (aggregate soil size < 4 mm) collected in a deforested area. Bare soil was used as control experiment. Runoff volume and erosion were significantly (at p < 0.05) lower in mulched soils compared to control plots. These reductions were ascribed to the water absorption capacity of the rice straw and the protection cover of the mulch layer. The minimum runoff was observed for a mulch layer of 3 Mg/ha of straw with a length of 200 mm. The lowest soil losses were found with straw length of 10 mm. The models developed predict runoff and erosion based on simple linear functions of mulch application rate and length, and can be used for a suitable hydrological management of soil. It is concluded that, thanks to rice straw mulch used as an organic soil conditioner, soil erosion and surface runoff are significantly (at p < 0.05) reduced, and the mulch protection contributes to reduce the risk of soil degradation. Further research is, however, needed to analyze the upscaling of the hydrological effects of mulching from the plot to the hillslope scale.

Abstract:Straw incorporation is an important management practice in global agriculture. However, present straw returning usually focus on returning straw into the topsoil, while neglecting the amendment of subsoil. The study aims to investigate the effect of different straw returning strategies on soil quality and wheat productivity, and to develop recommendations regarding sustainable agriculture. A 2-year field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of five straw returning strategies on the soil quality and wheat yield in a winter wheat-summer maize cropping system in the North China Plain. Soil quality is defined as an index approach, including soil physical, chemical, and biological properties. The five treatments were straw removal (SR), straw mulching (SM), straw incorporation into topsoil (SI), deep-ploughing straw incorporation (DP-SI) and deep-injected straw incorporation (DI-SI). Our results showed that straw returning improved soil quality across 0–40 cm depth relative to SR. The DP-SI and DI-SIa (above straw cluster) significantly increased topsoil quality by 20.5–26.2

Abstract:The infrequent rainfall caused drought prone condition particularly in semi‐arid regions of China, where most of the precipitation occurs in summer season. Thus, the summer rainwater conservation is very important for winter wheat (Triticum aestivum) production. Therefore a 2‐year field experiment was conducted on straw mulch along with N fertilizer to improve physiology, nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), wheat yield, and water use efficiency (WUE). Maize (Zea mays) was a rotated crop after wheat, and therefore maize straw mulch (S1, 0 kg ha−1; S2, 4500 kg ha−1; S3, 9000 kg ha−1) was in the main plots, and N fertilizer (N1, 0 kg ha−1; N2, 192 kg ha−1 (80%); N3, 240 kg ha−1 (100%)) was in the sub plots. The interaction of S3N3 and S3N2 produced 59.2% and 43.8% higher net photosynthesis and enhanced its characteristics at booting stage compared with that of S1N1. Higher SPAD values (49.1 and 41.0%) and leaf area (85.6 and 61.0%) measured with S3N3 and S3N2 treatments at booting stage compared with S1N1. Both S3N2 and S3N3 had increased wheat N‐uptake (91 and 103%, respectively) compared to S1N1. While S3N3 and S3N2 enhanced soil moisture conservation, NUE (19.7 and 22.8%), and WUE (47.2 and 47.2%) with the improvement in the growth yield of wheat compared to S1N1. Higher 7604 kg ha−1 of wheat grain yield was obtained from interaction of S3N2. Therefore, interaction of S3N2 is a viable approach for improving the winter wheat crop performance in term of NUE, WUE and wheat yield for semiarid areas in China. Effects of Soil and Water Conservation Measures on Runoff and Sediment Yield in Red Soil Slope Farmland under Natural Rainfall

Abstract:This paper analyzes the relationship between runoff, soil erosion, sediment particles, and natural rainfall characteristics on sloping farmland in the red soil region of southern China. The surface runoff and soil loss data were measured on runoff plots during 66 natural rainfall events from 2015 to 2018 in Jiangxi Province. The results show that the maximum 30-min rainfall intensity (I30) is positively related to the runoff depth, soil erosion modulus, and sediment mean weight diameter (MWD). With the increase in I30 during rainfall, the coarse sand content increases, and the fine sand content decreases. The average annual runoff of slope tillage, hedgerows with slope tillage, straw mulching with conventional tillage, and contour tillage decreased by 32.56%, 65.87%, 83.99%, and 87.30%, respectively, compared with that of bare land. Soil and water conservation measures can significantly reduce slope runoff. The flow-reduction effect of contour tillage and straw mulching with conventional tillage increases as I30 increases, and the flow-reduction effect of hedgerows with slope tillage first increases and then decreases as I30 increases. The coefficients of variation and standard deviations of the flow-reduction effects of different soil and water conservation measures decrease with increasing I30. The average annual soil erosion moduli of slope tillage, hedgerows with slope tillage, contour tillage, and straw mulching with conventional tillage decreased by 59.33%, 91.29%, 97.17%, and 98.45%, respectively, compared with that of bare land. Soil and water conservation measures can significantly reduce the sediment yield on slopes. The flow-reduction effects of hedgerows with slope tillage, contour tillage, and straw mulching with conventional tillage all increase with I30, and their coefficients of variation and standard deviations decrease with I30. The average single rainfall erosion sediment MWD of decreased by 5.91%, 8.33%, 9.69%, and 13.32%, respectively, compared with that of bare land. Straw mulching with conventional tillage can significantly reduce the MWD of erosion sediment, effectively reduce the content of coarse sand, and increase the content of fine sand. Straw mulching with conventional tillage is a very good soil and water conservation measure for sloping farmland. It not only has the best effect on reducing flow and sediment, but also can effectively intercept coarse sand and reduce the MWD of erosion sediment.

Abstract:Straw and plastic mulching have been widely used in northwest China because of their ability to improve water use efficiency and increase grain yields. However, the dynamic changes of soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) under continuous straw and plastic mulching is rarely mentioned. A field experiment was conducted over four consecutive wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)-maize (Zea mays L.) rotation cycles in Northwest China to determine dynamic changes in soil C and N under three treatments: CK (traditional non-mulched), PM (transparent plastic mulching), and SM (straw mulching). Over the four wheat–maize cycles, soil organic carbon (SOC) in SM increased by 18% in the 0–0.2 m soil layer, while in PM SOC decreased by 15%, and in CK SOC changed little. Total N under CK and SM remained basically unchanged over time, but declined over time under PM. The overall microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and nitrogen (MBN) under SM increased by 32% and 17%, respectively, after four rotation cycles compared with significant decreases of 29% and 22% under PM and little change under CK. SM reduced soil temperature and increased soil water content, while PM increased both ST and water relation to the CK. Both SM and PM treatments increased grain yield and reduced nitrate N leaching. In the long run, straw mulching can improve SOC, MBC, MBN, and wheat–maize yield, and should be the recommended mulching practice for sustainable wheat–maize production in dryland areas in response to the potential challenges of climate change to dryland agriculture.

Abstract:Soil degradation and water scarcity are key constraints underlying low crop productivity in arid and semiarid regions. Therefore, adoption of improved technologies and effective management practices for optimizing soil water conservation and improving soil fertility is crucial for sustainable food production in dryland areas. A meta-analysis using the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guideline was performed to synthesize studies investigating the impact of plastic film and wheat straw mulching on maize water use efficiency (WUE), evapotranspiration, and grain yield in northern China. Articles published from 2001 to 2021 were examined to investigate the influence of mulching and ridge-furrow rainwater harvesting systems on maize grain yield. The meta-analysis demonstrated that the plastic mulched ridge with straw mulch furrow increased maize grain yield and water use efficiency in low rainfall areas. Compared to traditional flat planting (TFP) with no mulching, plastic film mulch with straw mulched furrow (PMR + SMF) treatment significantly ( p = 0.0008) increased WUE of maize by 69.51% in areas where air temperature was < 10 °C but had no significant effect on evapotranspiration. Maize grain yield in Shaanxi and Gansu areas increased significantly (by 52.52%, p < 0.00001) with the integration of PMR + SMF system compared to the TFP with the no mulching. However, the plastic film mulch and wheat straw mulch acting solely or in combination did not significantly affect maize evapotranspiration under the different climate and soil types investigated. The integration of RFRHs with plastic film with wheat straw mulching can improve crop productivity and WUE. Findings from the meta-analysis lay a platform for the adoption of climate-smart integrated soil water management practice in semiarid areas to strengthen climate-resilient crop production.
