Abstract:The detection and pretreatment of some heavy metal ions such as Hg (II) are very important focused area because of their toxic effects to human health and the environment. In this study, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were synthesized by hydrothermal method from pigeon manure as a carbon precursor. The synthesized CQDs were characterized by UV–Vis spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) techniques. Due to the fact that the fluorescence intensity of the synthesized CQDs was quenched quietly from 613 to 295 by Hg (II) ion, the synthesized CQDs from pigeon manure can be used in the detection of Hg (II) with remarkable selectivity and sensitivity. In addition, the synthesized CQDs have a potential in using fluorescent inks. The pH-depending stability of the synthesized CQDs in the range of 4–10 was investigated. According to the results, CQDs were very stable in the changing pH range and quenching behaviors in Hg (II) detections.
