Abstract:<p>Oil/gas exploration around the world has extended into deep and ultra-deep strata because it is increasingly difficult to find new large-scale oil/gas reservoirs in shallow to middle buried strata. In recent years, China has made remarkable achievements in oil/gas exploration in ultra-deep areas including carbonate and clastic reservoirs. Some (ultra) large-scale oil and gas fields have been discovered. The oil/gas accumulation mechanisms and key technologies of oil/gas reservoir exploration and development are summarized in this study in order to share China's experiences. Ultra-deep oil/gas originates from numerous sources of hydrocarbons and multiphase charging. Liquid hydrocarbons can form in ultra-deep layers due to low geothermal gradients or overpressures, and the natural gas composition in ultra-deep areas is complicated by the reactions between deep hydrocarbons, water, and rock or by the addition of mantle or crust-sourced gases. These oils/gases are mainly stored in the original high-energy reef shoal complexes or in sand body sediments. They usually have high original porosity. Secondary pores are often developed by dissolution, dolomitization, and fracturing in the late stage. The early pores have been preserved by retentive diagenesis such as the early charging of hydrocarbons. Oil/gas accumulation in ultra-deep areas generally has the characteristics of near-source accumulation and sustained preservation. The effective exploration and development of ultra-deep oil/gas reservoirs depend on the support of key technologies. Use of the latest technologies such as seismic signal acquisition and processing, low porosity and permeability zone prediction, and gas-water identification has enabled the discovery of ultra-deep oil/gas resources. In addition, advanced technologies for drilling, completion, and oil/gas testing have ensured the effective development of these fields.</p>

Abstract:Based on the recent oil and gas discoveries and geological understandings on the ultra-deep strata of sedimentary basins, the formation and occurrence of hydrocarbons in the ultra-deep strata were investigated with respect to the processes of basin formation, hydrocarbon generation, reservoir formation and hydrocarbon accumulation, and key issues in ultra-deep oil and gas exploration were discussed. The ultra-deep strata in China underwent two extensional-convergent cycles in the Meso-Neoproterozoic Era and the Early Paleozoic Era respectively, with the tectonic-sedimentary differentiation producing the spatially adjacent source-reservoir assemblages. There are diverse large-scale carbonate reservoirs such as mound-beach, dolomite, karst fracture-vug, fractured karst and faulted zone, as well as over-pressured clastic rock and fractured bedrock reservoirs. Hydrocarbons were accumulated in multiple stages, accompanied by adjusting and finalizing in the late stage. The distribution of hydrocarbons is controlled by high-energy beach zone, regional unconformity, paleo-high and large-scale fault zone. The ultra-deep strata endow oil and gas resources as 33% of the remaining total resources, suggesting an important successive domain for hydrocarbon development in China. The large-scale pool-forming geologic units and giant hydrocarbon enrichment zones in ultra-deep strata are key and promising prospects for delivering successive discoveries. The geological conditions and enrichment zone prediction of ultra-deep oil and gas are key issues of petroleum geology.

Abstract:A series of breakthroughs have been achieved in the exploration of ultra-deep formations onshore China as geological understanding and technologies progress, such as Tarim Basin, Sichuan Basin, Bohai Bay Basin. Some new understandings are put forward suggesting that ultra-deep petroleum potential should be beyond expectation: hydrocarbons are controlled by rift valleys in the pre-Cambrian in China, conventional marine carbonate hydrocarbon source kitchens and scattered liquid hydrocarbons in source rocks are cracked to provide a large scale of gas, clastics in ultra-deep formations develop excellent source rocks, the low limit of gas generation is extended and the upper temperature limit for ultra-deep oil cracking without catalysis is beyond 230°C, the low pore radius limit is different for different types of reservoirs and hydrocarbon accumulating mechanisms. The preservation of three types of carbonate karst reservoirs and three types of clastic reservoirs as well as the physical properties of volcanics are slightly affected by burial depth, and it is predicted that favorable reservoirs are widely spread in ultra-deep formations. Carbonate karst, source rock and clastic reservoir interbeds are associated effectively in large ancient uplifts and slopes close to source rocks, faults control hydrocarbons and volcanics form accumulations nearby sources. This decides that ultra-deep carbonates, clastics and volcanics can all form large accumulations, but the abundance of reserve is relatively low. In Chinese ultra-deep formations, there are remaining petroleum resources of 162.9×10 8 t, gas of 16.3×10 12 m 3 , nine practical exploratory areas, 14 relay exploratory areas, and a great potential of exploration. In future, ultra-deep carbonates are an important relay area for oil and gas, ultra-deep clastics are secondarily important, and ultra-deep volcanics are and important area for further study.

Abstract:By analyzing the structural background, petroleum geological conditions, and typical regional (paleo) oil and gas reservoirs in marine ultra-deep oil and gas regions in China, this paper reveals the evolution processes of the marine ultra-deep oil and gas reservoirs and the key controlling factors of accumulation. The marine ultra-deep oil and gas resources in China are buried at depth of greater than 6000 m, and are mainly distributed in the Precambrian and Lower Paleozoic strata in the Sichuan, Tarim and Ordos cratonic basins. The development of marine ultra-deep source rocks in China is controlled by cratonic rifts and cratonic depressions with the background of global supercontinent breakup-convergence cycles. The source rocks in Sichuan Basin have the most developed strata, followed by Tarim Basin, and the development strata and scale of Ordos Basin needs to be further confirmed. The marine ultra-deep reservoir in China is dominated by carbonate rocks, and the reservoir performance is controlled by high-energy sedimentary environment in the early stage, superimposed corrosion and fracture in the later stage. The regional caprocks are dominated by gypsum salt rocks, shale, and tight carbonate rock. The ultra-deep oil and gas fields in China have generally experienced two stages of oil-reservoir forming, cracking (or partial cracking) of paleo-oil reservoirs, and late finalization of cracked gas (or highly mature to over mature oil and gas). The oil and gas accumulation is controlled by static and dynamic geological elements jointly. Major hydrocarbon generation center, high quality and large-scale reservoir resulted from karstification of high energy facies belt, thick gypsum rock or shale caprock, and stable trapping and preservation conditions are the key factors for accumulation of ultra-deep oil and gas. We propose three favorable exploration directions, i.e. the areas around intracratonic rift and intracratonic depression, and craton margin.

Abstract:Based on drilling and logging data, as well as geological experiments, the geological characteristics and factors controlling high-yield and enrichment of hydrocarbons in ultra-deep clastic rocks in the Linhe Depression, Hetao Basin, are studied. The results are obtained in four aspects. First, the inland saline lacustrine high-quality source rocks developed in the Paleogene in the Linhe Depression have the characteristics of early maturity, early expulsion, high hydrocarbon yield, and continuous and efficient hydrocarbon generation, providing an important resource basis for the formation of ultra-high pressure and high-yield reservoirs. Second, the weak compaction, early charging, and weak cementation for pore-preserving, together with the ultra-high pressure for pore-preserving and fracture expansion to improve the permeability, leads to the development of high-quality reservoirs with medium porosity (greater than 15%) and medium permeability (up to 226×10 −3 μm 2 ) in the ultra-deep strata (deeper than 6 500 m), which represents a greatly expanded space for oil and gas exploration. Third, the Linhe Formation adjacent to the trough exhibits a low net-to-gross (NTG) and good reservoir-caprock assemblage, and it is overlaid by very thick high-quality mudstone caprock, which are conducive to the continuous and efficient hydrocarbon generation and pressurization and the formation of ultra-high pressure oil and gas reservoirs. Fourth, the most favorable targets for ultra-deep exploration are the zones adjacent to the hydrocarbon generating center of the Paleogene Linhe Formation and with good tectonic setting and structural traps, mainly including the Xinglong faulted structural zone and the Nalinhu faulted buried-hill zone. The significant breakthrough of ultra-deep oil and gas exploration in the Linhe Depression reveals the good potential of ultra-deep clastic rocks in this area, and provides valuable reference for oil and gas exploration of ultra-deep clastic rocks in other areas.

Abstract:The onshore exploration realm has been continuously expanded to (ultra-) deep oil and gas recently in China. New comprehension and significant breakthroughs have been made in understanding generation and preservation conditions, reservoirs formation mechanisms, exploration potential, petroleum resources assessments, and exploration engineering technology of deep oil and gas. Deep oil and gas reservoirs include clastic, carbonate and volcanic settings. The temperature of deep oil can be up to 295 °C. Long term shallow burial and rapid deep burial at late stages help preserve the porosity in deep clastic rocks, and dissolution and fracturing effects improve their reservoir properties. Affected by faulting, hydrothermal karst processes, dolomitization and early oil and gas injection, carbonate rocks have good reservoir properties even at depths of 8 000 m. Controlled by tectonism, volcanism, diagenesis and diagenetic reconstruction during supergene and burial stages, primary and secondary weathering types of reservoirs develop deep volcanic reservoirs. Deep oil and gas resources in China are distributed mainly within three main practical areas of carbonate, clastic and volcanic areas. Dominated by gas, some of the more productive areas include the Tarim, Ordos, Sichuan, Junggar, Songliao, Santanghu and Bohai Bay basins. Deep oil and gas exploration in China has entered an age of breakthrough and discovery. Relevant engineering technology, such as ultra deep well drilling and ultra high temperature drilling fluid techniques have facilitated the ability to find (ultra-) deep oil and gas.

Abstract:This study aims to explore the reservoir characteristics and formation mechanisms of ultra-deep shale gas in the Ordovician–Silurian Wufeng–Longmaxi Formation in the Sichuan Basin in order to provide theoretical support and practical guidance for the exploration and development of ultra-deep shale gas. With recent breakthroughs in ultra-deep shale gas exploration, understanding its organic matter development, mineral composition, and reservoir space characteristics has become particularly important. The background of this research lies in the significant potential of ultra-deep shale gas, which remains inadequately understood, necessitating an in-depth analysis of its pore structure and reservoir quality. Through a systematic study of the ultra-deep shale in well FS1 of Sichuan Basin, that the following was found: (i) The ultra-deep shale in the Wufeng–Longmaxi Formation is mainly composed of quartz and clay minerals, exhibiting high total organic carbon (TOC) and high porosity characteristics, indicating it is in an overmature thermal evolution stage. (ii) Organic pores and microcracks in the ultra-deep shale are more developed compared to middle-shallow and deep shale, forming a complex pore structure that is conducive to gas storage. (iii) In the diagenesis process, the dissolution and recrystallization of the biogenic skeleton promote the cementation between autogenetic quartz particles, forming a rigid skeleton that effectively inhibits the impact of mechanical compaction. (iv) The overpressure environment created by the hydrocarbon generation process, along with gas production from hydrocarbon cracking, can effectively offset the mechanical compaction of overburden pressure on micropores, and this overpressure environment also promotes the further development of microfractures, which is beneficial for the development and preservation of ultra-deep shale pores. In summary, this study not only reveals the reservoir characteristics and formation mechanisms of ultra-deep shale but also provides essential references for the exploration and development of ultra-deep shale gas in the Sichuan Basin and similar regions, emphasizing the ongoing significance of research in this field.

Abstract:More than 30 years of continuous development has made onshore deep and ultra-deep conventional and unconventional oil and gas become an integral part of increasing the energy reserves and output by China’s petroleum industry. Based on the deep oil and gas geological conditions in the country, the present study finds that paleo stratum and deep burial are the two basic geological characteristics of deep oil and gas. Furthermore, we put forward the notion that it is necessary to strengthen the fundamental research of theories in four aspects and the core technology in five aspects of deep oil and gas. It is suggested that it is of special importance to promote the scientific and technological research of deep oil and gas through the scientific exploration of “myriameter deep” wells as the starting point, so as to boost the development of deep oil and gas field in China. Abstract:The global situation of distribution, reserves and production of deep oil and gas are examined systematically, the progress and exploration achievement of onshore China deep geophysical technology are summarized, and the challenges and developing direction of deep geophysical technology are pointed out. Aiming at the exploration of deep onshore strata in China, the article analyzes the key geophysical problems, such as low signal-to-noise ratio, low resolution, low imaging accuracy and low amplitude-preservation, in the exploration of deep clastic, carbonate, and volcanic reservoirs, and presents the corresponding technical countermeasures such as wide-line large-array 2-D acquisition, wide-azimuth and high-density 3-D acquisition, anisotropic pre-stack depth migration (PSDM), reverse-time migration (RTM), complex structure modeling, and quantitative reservoir prediction. The analysis from two aspects, imaging of deep complicated structures and prediction of deep complicated reservoirs, shows that wide-frequency, amplitude-preservation, high-accuracy and information integration are the challenges to and key issues in the geophysical technology. It is pointed out that wide-frequency seismic acquisition, rock physical modeling of complex reservoirs, high-accuracy prestack amplitude-preservation imaging, comprehensive evaluation of complex reservoirs, non-seismic techniques, and drilling steering with seismic data are the key geophysical techniques needed to be developed in the future.

Deep and ultra-deep natural gas exploration in the Sichuan Basin: Progress and prospect

Abstract:In recent years, major breakthroughs have been made in natural gas exploration in deep and ultra-deep strata in the Sichuan Basin, but the overall successful rate is low. To further clarify the prospects there, it is necessary to make an in-depth analysis of the previously discovered large-scale reef-shoal gas fields such as Puguang, Yuanba, Anyue and Longgang and deep shale gas discovery in Dingshan and Dongxi, southern Sichuan Basin. On one hand, large high-energy facies are the basis for controlling the development of large-scale reef-shoal reservoirs in conventional reef-shoal areas. The reservoir original porosity is high. The atmospheric freshwater dissolution in the early diagenetic stage, dolomitization, unconformity karst, and "pore–fracture coupling" mainly control the development of secondary pores. The contribution of hydrothermal fluids to reservoir is double-sided, and such early pores can be preserved till present due to those retention processes such as early hydrocarbon charging. Apart from continuous preservation as the key factor, most gas reservoirs are featured by "near-source enrichment, phase transformation, and dynamic adjustment". On the other hand, deep shale gas generally has the characteristics of "high pressure, high porosity, and high gas content", that is, "overpressure and rich gas". The key to the development of high-quality deep shales with high pores are "quartz compression retaining pore" and "reservoir fluid overpressure". The weak tectonic effect in the late stage is the main reason for deep shale gas to maintain the "high pressure and high gas content". In conclusion, technological advances like geological target identification and "sweet spot" prediction, as well as deep, high-temperature and high-pressure engineering processes, are the guarantee for efficient exploration of conventional and unconventional deep and ultra-deep natural gas, which has great potential in the Sichuan Basin.

Abstract:Large and extra-large oil/gas fields are mainly distributed in Tethys areas, passive margins, foreland thrust belts, and craton basins in the world. Unconventional oil/gas fields are mainly distributed in foreland slopes, basin (depression) centers, craton synclines, and tundra. Since the 21st century, the major exploration discoveries across the globe have been mainly concentrated in the deep water area of passive margins, carbonate rock, lithologic-stratigraphic zone, foreland thrust belt, mature exploration area, new basin and unconventional oil/gas reservoir (field). These major discoveries involve conventional and unconventional oil/gas resources. The conventional oil geology stresses the oil/gas migration and reservoir-forming rules in individual traps; the unconventional oil geology focuses on unconventional resources, reservoir, reservoir-formation and technologies. The geological features, classification program, research content, evaluation method and exploration phase of unconventional oil/gas reservoirs (fields) are different from those of conventional ones. Research should be strengthened on unconventional oil geology to develop unconventional oil geological theories.
Potential and Favorable Areas of Petroleum Exploration of Ultra-Deep Marine Strata More Than 8000 M Deep in the Tarim Basin, Northwest China

Abstract:At present, deep and ultra-deep oil and gas have become the research and exploration hotspots. With little drilling data available, the geological understanding on deep formations is still in the exploratory stage, but most petroleum geologists have universally acknowledged that the deeply-buried strata of Chinese marine craton basins are equipped with the conditions for abundant oil and gas resources. A series of discoveries have been made in the Ordovician and Cambrian strata. For Precambrian strata, besides breakthroughs in the Sichuan Basin, a lot of research or drilling work has been initiated in other basins. In the Tarim Basin, the current burial depth of the Lower Paleozoic and the Precambrian mainly ranges from 5000 to 12000 m. This is attributed to rapid subsidence and deposition since the Neogene. A large number of exploration discoveries have been made, and commercial productivity projects have been constructed at the depth less than 8000 m. Strata more than 8000 m deep will be a significant major prospecting exploration field in the future. The analyses of hydrocarbon accumulation conditions of the ultra-deep layers of the Tarim Basin provide theoretical guidance for ultra-deep oil and gas exploration. This research is based on source rocks in the Cambrian, Sinian, and Nanhua System, formation and preservation of ultra-deep carbonate reservoirs, phase of petroleum and accumulation assemblages in ultra-deep strata, the exploration fields deeper than 8000 m were also evaluated to sort out the most favorable areas and, future exploration focuses on the Ordovician, Cambrian, and Sinian strata are pointed out.
Deep geological processes and deep resources in basins:scientific issues and research directions

Abstract:Marching deeper into the earth is of great significance for domestic resource strategy and tends to be an inevitable research direction in geoscience. With theoretical and technological progress achieved in recent years, hydrocarbon resources in deep or ultra-deep reservoirs have become a major exploration field for targets at home and abroad. Various discoveries of large-scale geological resources, such as H2, He, CO2 and geothermal resources, are proved to be related to deep geological processes, and therefore it is important to reveal the impact of these on deep accumulations. In this paper, the effects of basinal deep processes on hydrocarbon generation and evolution of source rocks, formation and preservation of reservoirs, migration and accumulation of hydrocarbon and its associated resources were discussed. Besides, some research progress and key scientific issues were summarized, and subsequently several research directions were proposed. Presently main scientific issues regarding deep geological processes and deep resources include: a) chemical kinetic models and multiple hydrocarbon generation potential of source rocks in deep geological processes; b) interaction mechanism of water-rock-hydrocarbon in high-pressure and high-temperature supercritical systems and effectiveness of ultra-deep reservoirs; c) phase transformation, accumulation and preservation of hydrocarbon in deep oil and gas systems; d) generation and accumulation of hydrocarbon-associated resources in specific deep geological environments. To carry out research on deep geological processes and deep hydrocarbon resources, it is necessary to start with the geological evolution of sedimentary basins, centering on the key issues of deep geological processes and resource effects and taking typical basins with active deep fluids as research objects, and revealing the mechanism of physical and chemical functions of deep formation, finally clarifying the impact of deep geological processes on the formation and accumulation mechanism of deep resources (oil and gas, H2, CO2, He, geothermal resources and hot dry rocks) and exploring the frontiers of deep resources. The main research directions in the future include: a) deep geodynamic settings and mechanism of geological processes; b) deep hydrocarbon generation kinetics and quantities; c) formation and preservation mechanisms of deep reservoirs; d) migration and accumulation mechanisms of deep hydrocarbons; e) differential enrichment mechanism of deep hydrocarbon-associated resources. Based on the above research, the accumulation theories and evaluation methods of hydrocarbon under the influence of deep geological processes were improved, and some scientific evidence for the exploration and evaluation of deep hydrocarbon-associated resources were provided.

Abstract:Based on the new data of drilling, seismic, logging, test and experiments, the key scientific problems in reservoir formation, hydrocarbon accumulation and efficient oil and gas development methods of deep and ultra-deep marine carbonate strata in the central and western superimposed basin in China have been continuously studied. (1) The fault-controlled carbonate reservoir and the ancient dolomite reservoir are two important types of reservoirs in the deep and ultra-deep marine carbonates. According to the formation origin, the large-scale fault-controlled reservoir can be further divided into three types: fracture-cavity reservoir formed by tectonic rupture, fault and fluid-controlled reservoir, and shoal and mound reservoir modified by fault and fluid. The Sinian microbial dolomites are developed in the aragonite-dolomite sea. The predominant mound-shoal facies, early dolomitization and dissolution, acidic fluid environment, anhydrite capping and overpressure are the key factors for the formation and preservation of high-quality dolomite reservoirs. (2) The organic-rich shale of the marine carbonate strata in the superimposed basins of central and western China are mainly developed in the sedimentary environments of deep-water shelf of passive continental margin and carbonate ramp. The tectonic-thermal system is the important factor controlling the hydrocarbon phase in deep and ultra-deep reservoirs, and the reformed dynamic field controls oil and gas accumulation and distribution in deep and ultra-deep marine carbonates. (3) During the development of high-sulfur gas fields such as Puguang, sulfur precipitation blocks the wellbore. The application of sulfur solvent combined with coiled tubing has a significant effect on removing sulfur blockage. The integrated technology of dual-medium modeling and numerical simulation based on sedimentary simulation can accurately characterize the spatial distribution and changes of the water invasion front. Afterward, water control strategies for the entire life cycle of gas wells are proposed, including flow rate management, water drainage and plugging. (4) In the development of ultra-deep fault-controlled fractured-cavity reservoirs, well production declines rapidly due to the permeability reduction, which is a consequence of reservoir stress-sensitivity. The rapid phase change in condensate gas reservoir and pressure decline significantly affect the recovery of condensate oil. Innovative development methods such as gravity drive through water and natural gas injection, and natural gas drive through top injection and bottom production for ultra-deep fault-controlled condensate gas reservoirs are proposed. By adopting the hierarchical geological modeling and the fluid-solid-thermal coupled numerical simulation, the accuracy of producing performance prediction in oil and gas reservoirs has been effectively improved.

Abstract:In this review on the exploration and development process of the Shunbei ultra-deep carbonate oil and gas field in the Tarim Basin, the progress of exploration and development technologies during the National 13th Five-Year Plan of China has been summarized systematically, giving important guidance for the exploration and development of ultra-deep marine carbonate reservoirs in China and abroad. Through analyzing the primary geological factors of “hydrocarbon generation-reservoir formation-hydrocarbon accumulation” of ancient and superposed basin comprehensively and dynamically, we point out that because the Lower Cambrian Yuertusi Formation high-quality source rocks have been located in a low-temperature environment for a long time, they were capable of generating hydrocarbon continuously in late stage, providing ideal geological conditions for massive liquid hydrocarbon accumulation in ultra-deep layers. In addition, strike-slip faults developed in tectonically stable areas have strong control on reservoir formation and hydrocarbon accumulation in this region. With these understandings, the exploration focus shifted from the two paleo-uplifts located in the north and the south to the Shuntuoguole lower uplift located in between and achieved major hydrocarbon discoveries. Through continuing improvement of seismic exploration technologies for ultra-deep carbonates in desert, integrated technologies including seismic acquisition in ultra-deep carbonates, seismic imaging of strike-slip faults and the associated cavity-fracture systems, detailed structural interpretation of strike-slip faults, characterization and quantitative description of fault-controlled cavities and fractures, description of fault-controlled traps and target optimization have been established. Geology-engineering integration including well trajectory optimization, high efficiency drilling, completion and reservoir reformation technologies has provided important support for exploration and development of the Shunbei oil and gas field.
