A Model for the Tropical Cyclone Wind Field Response to Idealized Landfall

Abstract:The impacts of a tropical cyclone after landfall depend not only on storm intensity but also on the size and structure of the wind field. Hence, a simple predictive model for the wind field after landfall has significant potential value. This work tests existing theory for wind structure and size over the ocean against idealized axisymmetric landfall experiments in which the surface beneath a mature storm is instantaneously dried and roughened individually or simultaneously. Structure theory captures the response of the low-level wind field to different types of idealized landfalls given intensity and size response. Storm size, modeled to follow the ratio of simulated time-dependent storm intensity to the Coriolis parameter vm(t)/f, can generally predict the transient response of the storm gale wind radii r34kt to inland surface forcings, particularly for at least moderate surface roughening regardless of the level of drying. Given knowledge of the intensity evolution, the above results combine to yield a theoretical model that can predict the full tangential wind field response to idealized landfalls. An example application to a real world landfall is provided to demonstrate its potential utility for risk applications.

A Numerical Investigation of Land Surface Water on Landfalling Hurricanes

Abstract:Little is known about the effects of surface water over land on the decay of landfalling hurricanes. This study, using the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory hurricane model, examines the surface temperature changes due to hurricane-land surface water interactions, and their effects on the surface heat fluxes, hurricane structure, and intensity. Different water depths and surface conditions are incorporated for a variety of experiments starting with a hurricane bogus embedded in a uniform easterly mean flow of 5 m s(-1).A salient feature of hurricane-land surface water interaction is the local surface cooling near the hurricane core with the largest cooling behind and on the right side of the hurricane center. Unlike the surface cooling due to hurricane-ocean interaction, the largest cooling in hurricane-land surface water interaction can be much closer to the hurricane core. Without solar radiation during night, the surface evaporation dominates the local surface cooling. This causes a surface temperature contrast between the core area and its environment. During the day, the surface temperature contrast is enhanced due to additional influence from the reduced solar radiation under the core. Related to the local surface cooling, there is a significant reduction of surface evaporation with a near cutoff behind the hurricane center. A layer of half-meter water can noticeably reduce landfall decay although the local surface temperature around the hurricane core region is more than 4degreesC lower than in its environment. Further experiments indicate that an increase of roughness reduces the surface winds but barely changes the surface temperature and evaporation patterns and their magnitudes since the increase of roughness also increases the efficiency of surface evaporation.

Abstract:A presumed impact of global climate change is the increase in frequency and intensity of tropical cyclones. Due to the possible destruction that occurs when tropical cyclones make landfall, understanding their formation should be of mass interest. In 2017, Kerry Emanuel modeled tropical cyclone formation by developing a low-dimensional dynamical system which couples tangential wind speed of the eye-wall with the inner-core moisture. For physically relevant parameters, this dynamical system always contains three fixed points: a stable fixed point at the origin corresponding to a non-storm state, an additional asymptotically stable fixed point corresponding to a stable storm state, and a saddle corresponding to an unstable storm state. The goal of this work is to provide insight into the underlying mechanisms that govern the formation and suppression of tropical cyclones through both analytical arguments and numerical experiments. We present a case study of both rate and noise-induced tipping between the stable states, relating to the destabilization or formation of a tropical cyclone. While the stochastic system exhibits transitions both to and from the non-storm state, noise-induced tipping is more likely to form a storm, whereas rate-induced tipping is more likely to be the way a storm is destabilized, and in fact, rate-induced tipping can never lead to the formation of a storm when acting alone. For rate-induced tipping acting as a destabilizer of the storm, a striking result is that both wind shear and maximal potential velocity have to increase, at a substantial rate, in order to effect tipping away from the active hurricane state. For storm formation through noise-induced tipping, we identify a specific direction along which the non-storm state is most likely to get activated.

Steering Flow Sensitivity in Forecast Models for Hurricane Ian (2022)

Abstract:Abstract Hurricane Ian made landfall along Florida’s West Coast on 28 September 2022 at 1905 UTC near the Fort Myers area as a high impact storm. Here, we examine the potential link between track forecast errors near the time of landfall and errors in both the synoptic-scale upper-level flow and a shortwave moving within that flow. Five-days before the actual landfall (0000 UTC 23 September), most model guidance indicated landfall would occur close to where Ian eventually came ashore. But by 0000 UTC 25 September, model forecasts were all forecasting landfall in the Florida Panhandle. One day later, the models again agreed with each other but for a landfall 100 – 200 km north of Tampa, FL. By 0000 UTC 27 September, forecast models indicated landfall would occur near Tampa. Model forecasts continued shifting to the right and finally converged on Punta Gorda, FL, as the landfall location, less than 24 hours before landfall. In this short article, we hypothesize that the track of Ian depended on subtle interactions with an extratropical wave in the middle and upper atmosphere. Deterministic and ensemble model forecasts reveal that the interactions were very sensitive to the characteristics of this wave and the synoptic-scale flow in which the wave was embedded. A 1-2 dam difference in the geopotential heights played a major role in whether Ian moved north into the Panhandle or towards the east, making landfall in Central Florida.

Abstract:Intensity variation of tropical cyclones（TCs）,especially that of coastal or landfalling TCs,is of great concern in current research.Most of the research papers,however,focus on intensification processes of TCs;only a few discuss decay processes in the lifetime of a TC.In the daily weather operation related to TCs,it is challenging when a TC weakens and/or disappears suddenly,because it brings more difficulties than the forecast of intensifying TCs does.Overestimation of a decaying landfalling TC would lead to over-preparation of defensive measures and result in"crying wolf"mentality with adverse effects.This study summarized physical mechanisms that dominate the decaying process of TCs and listed several possible dynamical factors:reduced level of air temperature,too large or too small speed,contraction of TC size amplification of TC’s core,and lightning number in a TC.

Abstract:While tropical cyclones (TCs) usually decay after landfall, Tropical Storm Fay (2008) initially developed a storm central eye over South Florida by anomalous intensification overland. Unique to the Florida peninsula are Lake Okeechobee and the Everglades, which may have provided a surface feedback as the TC tracked near these features around the time of peak intensity. Analysis is done with the use of an ensemble model-based approach with the Developmental Testbed Center (DTC) version of the Hurricane WRF (HWRF) model using an outer domain and a storm-centered moving nest with 27- and 9-km grid spacing, respectively. Choice of land surface parameterization and small-scale surface features may influence TC structure, dictate the rate of TC decay, and even the anomalous intensification after landfall in model experiments. Results indicate that the HWRF model track and intensity forecasts are sensitive to three features in the model framework: land surface parameterization, initial boundary conditions, and the choice of planetary boundary layer (PBL) scheme. Land surface parameterizations such as the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) Slab and Noah land surface models (LSMs) dominate the changes in storm track, while initial conditions and PBL schemes cause the largest changes in the TC intensity overland. Land surface heterogeneity in Florida from removing surface features in model simulations shows a small role in the forecast intensity change with no substantial alterations to TC track.

Abstract:With a growing population (over 40%) living in coastal counties within the U.S., there is an increasing risk that coastal communities will be significantly impacted by riverine/coastal flooding and high winds associated with tropical cyclones. Climate change could exacerbate these risks; thus, it would be prudent for coastal communities to plan for resilience in the face of these uncertainties. In order to address all of these risks, a coupled physics-based modeling system has been developed that simulates total water levels. This system uses parametric models for both rainfall and wind, which only require essential information (e.g., track and central pressure) generated by a hurricane model. The system is validated with Hurricane Isabel hindcasts: One using the parametric system and another using data assimilated fields. The results show a good agreement to the available data, indicating that the system is able to adequately capture the hazards using parametric models, as compared to optimized fields. The validated system was then utilized to simulate randomly generated scenarios that account for future uncertainty, i.e., amount of sea level rise and storm strength/track, as influenced by projected climate change scenarios. Results are then used in next step in the development of a system-wide, community resilience model.
Can Existing Theory Predict the Response of Tropical Cyclone Intensity to Idealized Landfall?

Abstract:Tropical cyclones cause significant inland hazards, including wind damage and freshwater flooding, that depend strongly on how storm intensity evolves at and after landfall. Existing theoretical predictions for the time-dependent and equilibrium response of storm intensity have been tested over the open ocean but not yet to be applied to storms after landfall. Recent work examined the transient response of the tropical cyclone low-level wind field to instantaneous surface roughening or drying in idealized axisymmetric f-plane simulations. Here, experiments testing combined surface roughening and drying with varying magnitudes of each are used to test theoretical predictions for the intensity response. The transient response to combined surface forcings can be reproduced by the product of their individual responses, in line with traditional potential intensity theory. Existing intensification theory is generalized to weakening and found capable of reproducing the time-dependent inland intensity decay. The initial (0-10min) rapid decay of near-surface wind caused by surface roughening is not captured by existing theory but can be reproduced by a simple frictional spin-down model, where the decay rate is a function of surface roughness. Finally, the theory is shown to compare well with the prevailing empirical decay model for real-world storms. Overall, results indicate the potential for existing theory to predict how tropical cyclone intensity evolves after landfall.

The Impact of Ocean Coupling on Hurricanes During Landfall

Abstract:The impact of ocean coupling on landfalling hurricanes is studied using a coupled hurricane‐ocean model with idealized atmospheric and oceanic conditions. We focus here on coastal sea surface temperature responses and their effects on hurricanes during landfall. We find that given the ocean thermal stratification, the hurricane‐induced sea surface cooling is nearly independent of the ocean depth as long as the ocean is considerably deeper than the mixed layer. After the storm center moves inland, the near‐surface processes around the storm core area are influenced by the sea surface cooling behind and on the right side of the storm track via reduction of near‐surface entropy advection into this area. The impact of ocean coupling is generally limited to the early times after landfall and nearly disappears after the hurricane center reaches about 200 km inland.

Abstract:Landfalling tropical cyclones (TCs) often experience drastic changes in their motion, intensity, and structure due to complex multiscale interactions among atmospheric processes and among the coastal ocean, land, and atmosphere. Because of the lack of comprehensive data and low capability of numerical models, understanding of and ability to predict landfalling TCs are still limited. A 10-yr key research project on landfalling TCs was initiated and launched in 2009 in China. The project has been jointly supported by the China Ministry of Science and Technology, China Meteorological Administration (CMA), Ministry of Education, and Chinese Academy of Sciences. Its mission is to enhance understanding of landfalling TC processes and improve forecasting skills on track, intensity, and distributions of strong winds and precipitation in landfalling TCs. This article provides an overview of the project, together with highlights of some new findings and new technical developments, as well as planned future efforts.
On the Temporal Decay of Tropical Cyclones Over the Ocean

Abstract:It is important to understand how tropical cyclones (TCs) decay over the ocean as this is a critical pre‐landfall stage. A modified exponential decay model (β model) with two parameters α and β is proposed. The scale parameter α defines the decay scale, while the shape parameter β determines whether the decay rate decelerates or accelerates over time. Global fittings indicate that around 40% of TCs exhibit decelerating decay (β≤1) , while the majority (about 60%) show accelerating decay (β>1) . Correlation analysis reveals a strong negative correlation between the scale parameter α and the initial Coriolis parameter (r=−0.96) and a positive correlation between the shape parameter β and the meridional component of the initial translation velocity (r=0.75) . The β model provides a comprehensive understanding of how TCs decay with time and how environmental conditions affect the decay scale and evolution.

Abstract:Coastal oceans are highly responsive to typhoons, making them one of the most affected regions. However, our understanding of the impact of typhoon intensity and movement path on marine dynamic processes and eco-environmental factors remains limited because there are very few on-site investigations, especially continuous field observations in the bay during typhoon events. This study investigated dual water isotopes through a continuous survey (with a 5-day interval) during ten cruises in Zhanjiang Bay, associated with two typhoons of varying intensities and landing tracks (left and right sides). After typhoons, the water mass mixing intensified and lasted for several weeks, depending on the intensity of typhoons. During the typhoon periods, there was a considerable increase in contributions from freshwater to nutrient loads; however, this contribution was higher from the stronger typhoon than the weaker one. The weaker Typhoon Lionrock, which landed on the left side of the bay, enhanced the ocean front due to onshore winds induced by the typhoon, causing intrusion of high-salinity seawater into the bay and retaining pollutants in the bay. However, when stronger Typhoon Chaba landed on the right side, offshore winds induced by counterclockwise wind stress during the typhoon resulted in more seawater flowing toward the lower and outer bay. This prevented the forming of an ocean front and played a dilution role in pollutants through its hydrodynamic process. This was primarily due to the fact that the landing trajectory of typhoons directly influenced the direction of seawater flow in Zhanjiang Bay, while the intensity of typhoons further amplifies these flow patterns. This study suggests that tracks of typhoon movement, rather than their intensity and terrestrial runoff, play a crucial role in governing marine dynamics and nutrient supplies in coastal bays during typhoon events.

Abstract:Severe hurricanes in coastal areas have caused enormous human and economic losses. Furthermore, the intensity and frequency of future hurricanes may increase due to the potential impact of climate change. Due to common underlying climatological causes, interrelations may exist between successive hurricane events. This paper proposes a novel approach for modeling the temporal correlation in hurricane frequency and develops an analytical method that reflects this correlation to estimate the statistical properties of cumulative hurricane damage. The method provides a closed-form solution to the mean and variance of hurricane damage, and can be used to assess the impacts of temporal correlation and nonstationarity in hurricane events quantitatively. The applicability of the method is demonstrated through a case study of Miami-Dade County, Florida, in which it is found that the nonstationarity in hurricane events increases the mean value of hurricane damage over a future period of 100 years, while the temporal correlation increases its variance. The Transient Responses of An Axisymmetric Tropical Cyclone to Instantaneous Surface Roughening and Drying. Part I: Numerical Experiments

Abstract:Inland tropical cyclone (TC) impacts due to high winds and rainfall-induced flooding depend strongly on the evolution of the wind field and precipitation distribution after landfall. However, research has yet to test the detailed response of a mature TC and its hazards to changes in surface forcing in idealized settings. This work tests the transient response of an idealized hurricane to instantaneous transitions in two key surface properties associated with landfall: surface roughening and drying. Simplified axisymmetric experiments are performed in CM1 where surface drag coefficient and evaporative fraction are each systematically modified beneath a mature hurricane. Surface drying stabilizes the eyewall and consequently weakens the overturning circulation, thereby reducing inward angular momentum transport that slowly decays the wind field only within the inner-core. In contrast, surface roughening initially ($\sim$12 hours) rapidly weakens the entire low-level wind field and enhances the overturning circulation dynamically despite the concurrent thermodynamic stabilization of the eyewall; thereafter the storm gradually decays similar to drying. As a result, total precipitation temporarily increases with roughening but uniformly decreases with drying. Storm size decreases monotonically and rapidly with surface roughening, while the radius of maximum wind can increase with moderate surface drying. Overall, this work provides a mechanistic foundation for understanding the inland evolution of real storms in nature.

Hurricane Damage Assessment for Residential Construction Considering the Non-Stationarity in Hurricane Intensity and Frequency

Abstract:Natural hazards such as hurricanes may cause extensive economic losses and social disruption for civil structures and infrastructures in coastal areas, implying the importance of understanding the construction performance subjected to hurricanes and assessing the hurricane damages properly. The intensity and frequency of hurricanes have been reported to change with time due to the potential impact of climate change. In this paper, a probability-based model of hurricane damage assessment for coastal constructions is proposed taking into account the non-stationarity in hurricane intensity and frequency. The non-homogeneous Poisson process is employed to model the non-stationarity in hurricane occurrence while the non-stationarity in hurricane intensity is reflected by the time-variant statistical parameters (e.g., mean value and/or standard deviation), with which the mean value and variation of the cumulative hurricane damage are evaluated explicitly. The Miami-Dade County, Florida, USA, is chosen to illustrate the hurricane damage assessment method proposed in this paper. The role of non-stationarity in hurricane intensity and occurrence rate due to climate change in hurricane damage is investigated using some representative changing patterns of hurricane parameters.
Multiplatform Observations of Boundary Layer Structure in the Outer Rainbands of Landfalling Typhoons

Abstract:This paper analyzes data collected from a new set of observational platforms in the coastal area of China, which consist of a mobile observation system, meteorological tower, automatic weather station, and Doppler radars, to investigate the mean and turbulent boundary layer structure and evolution during the landfall of typhoons. An example of these data is provided from Typhoon Morakot (2009). Vertical profiles of wind velocities and thermodynamic parameters from the observed data allow us to identify different boundary layer structures during and after landfall. These structures, sampled in regions of the outer core, are stratified into periods where convection is occurring (termed "convective") and periods where convection has recently (<2 h) occurred (termed "postconvective"). Data analyses show that the thermodynamic mixed-layer depth and inflow layer depth are higher during the convective period than the postconvective period. The mixed-layer depth is found to be within the strong inflow layer, but the height of the maximum tangential wind speed is above the inflow layer during both periods, contrary to recent observational studies of the boundary-layer structure of tropical cyclones over water. High-frequency wind data show that momentum flux, turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) and integral length scales of wind velocities are all much larger during the convective period than the postconvective period. The results suggest that convective downdrafts may play an important role in modulating turbulent flux, TKE, vertical mixing, and boundary layer recovery processes.
The devil is in the tail dependence: An assessment of multivariate copula‐based frameworks and dependence concepts for coastal compound flood dynamics

Abstract:A hurricane event can often produce both intense rainfall and a storm tide that can cause a major compound flooding threat to coastlines. This paper examined applications of multivariate copula‐based time series models using data observed during Hurricane Irma (2017) along the coastlines of Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, United States. Multivariate time series models were developed using bivariate copulas wherein storm tide and rainfall data were modeled using LOWESS‐based autoregressive moving average (ARMA). n samples of observed data were then synthesized using a Monte Carlo approach in which the empirical copula and the parametric estimate of the copula were obtained to approximate two‐sided p‐values using the Rosenblatt probability integral transform method. Analysis suggested that proper selection of the underlying LOWESS‐based ARMA model was the crucial aspect for modeling compound flooding wherein Archimedean, Elliptical, and Extreme Value copulas all offered consistent flexibility in terms of dependence modeling. As a backdrop to compound flood probabilities, this research also outlined both theoretical and applied frameworks for the calculation of non‐exceedance probabilities in a multidimensional environment using classical isofrequency probability assumptions for the "AND" (a bivariate joint probability) and Survival Kendall definitions. Random realizations from storm copulas combined with multivariate non‐exceedance probability definitions ultimately showed there were periods of temporal yet cyclical high intensities that lasted 1‐2 hours. Lastly, a discussion is presented on the broader application of the proposed methodology within the field of engineering design and risk management which may serve as a catalyst for the continued research in compound flooding.

Abstract:The intensity and/or frequency of hurricane storms may change due to the impact of potential climate change. This paper presents a probabilistic framework to assess the hurricane damage to residential constructions considering the non-stationarity and correlation in hurricane actions. The framework includes a non-stationary Poisson process of hurricane occurrence, a failure rate function of hurricane damage, and explicit formulas for evaluating the mean and variance of annual hurricane damage. The framework is illustrated using a case study of Miami-Dade County, Florida, where the current probabilistic models of hurricane intensity and occurrence rate were estimated by examining hurricane history in this area. The impacts of time-variant hurricane intensity and time-variant hurricane frequency on building damage are assessed individually using the developed framework. A beta-advection typhoon track model and its application for typhoon hazard assessment

Abstract:<p>Typhoon track model plays an important role in typhoon wind hazard estimation. In this article, a beta-advection model is developed to simulate the typhoon track over the western North Pacific (WNP). The typhoon motion is driven by two effects, the steering flow and beta drift. The steering flow is modeled as the linear combination of the 850 hPa height large scale flow and 250 hPa height large scale flow. The spatially varying weights are estimated from the 20th Century Reanalysis dataset for each 5 ° × 5 ° square in WNP. The large scale flows at both heights are simulated as multivariate random process based on the fact that the energy spectrum of the geostrophic turbulence follows a "-3" power law. As another driving force of typhoon motion, the beta drift is calculated by solving the non-divergent barotropical vorticity equation. The adequacy of the present model is validated by the comparison between the typhoon translation velocity inferred from the best-track dataset and that simulated by the model. Finally, integrated with an intensity model, the beta-advection model is used to analyze the statistics of typhoon key parameters and typhoon wind hazard along the southeast coast of mainland China.</p>
