Abstract:Previous studies on hazard recognition focused on single-mode neuropsychological responses using eye tracking or neuroimaging techniques, reflecting a limited understanding of the interaction between ocular and brain activities. This study explores the construction workers' meta-cognitive processes underpinning first target fixations using co-registration of eye movement (EM) and electroencephalography (EEG). The authors conducted a hazard recognition experiment to collect EM and EEG signals under free viewing conditions and examined the relationship between visual attention and cognitive processing. The results show that the workers allocated cognitive resources first to processing targets' visual features and then to discriminating safe or hazardous characteristics. Visual perception and conscious discrimination within first fixations are related to the prior detection of surroundings and affect the subsequent refixations. This study promotes evaluating the hazard recognition process in view of synchronous visual search and brain activity and advances the workers' hazard search patterns.

Abstract:Visual attention of construction workers is closely related to their safety performance. Identifying and understanding safety signs on workplace effectively is beneficial to improve visual attention. This study focuses on exploring the influencing mechanism of construction safety sign features on visual attention of construction workers using the eye-tracking technology, in order to improve visual attention and workplace safety performance through optimizing the construction safety signs. A theoretical model of influencing mechanism of safety sign features on visual attention was constructed based on visual information processing theory. To verify the theoretical model, an experiment was conducted as follows: 28 pictures of safety signs including visual and cognitive features were shown on the computer screen, then eye movement data from 41 subjects was obtained using EyeLink1000 Plus. Statistical test methods were employed to analyze the relationship between safety sign features and eye-tracking metrics. The statistical results of theoretical model indicate that, among visual features, red and rectangular safety signs can reduce cognitive load of first fixation, green signs can reduce cognitive difficulties, however visual attention is not closely related to auxiliary words. Among the cognitive features, unfamiliar signs require more cognitive effort, while no significant difference exists in visual attention of different levels of concreteness and sematic closeness. This study provides theoretical and practical basis for improving construction workers' visual attention through optimizing visual and cognitive features of construction safety signs.

Effects of Semantic Congruence on Sign Identification: An ERP Study

Abstract:Objective The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of semantic congruence and incongruence on sign identification by using event-related potentials (ERPs). Background Sign systems have crucial roles in public spaces and traffic facilities. Poorly designed signs can easily confuse pedestrians and drivers and reduce the efficiency of public activities and urban administration. Method Thirty-one participants completed a sign identification experiment independently in a laboratory setting. Experimental materials were selected from GB/T 10001, a Chinese national recommendation standard that is officially named Public Information Graphical Symbols for Use on Signs. All ERP data were processed using MATLAB 13b, and behavioral data were analyzed using Stata 14. Results N170, P200, N300, and N400 components were induced during semantic processing. Statistical analysis revealed that semantic congruence has a main effect on N300 in the frontal region and has a main effect on N400 at FZ in the frontal region, CPZ in the parietal-central region, and PZ in the parietal region. Amplitudes of N300 induced by picture–word matching were considerably different between the two experimental conditions at electrodes FZ and FCZ. Amplitudes of N400 were significantly larger in the incongruent condition than in the congruent condition. Conclusion The study demonstrated that N300 and N400 are promising indicators for measuring semantic congruence in future sign design. Application Our findings provide ERP indicators for measuring the semantic congruence of sign design, which can be easily applied to improve the efficiency of sign design and sign comprehension.

Abstract:The application of the Electroencephalogram (EEG) technology shows promises in uncovering workers’ cognitive processes affecting safety performance in construction. Despite the increasing interest in research, it is yet challenging to ensure coherence and mitigate biases when interpreting safety cognition from EEG data. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the applications of EEG in construction safety research, categorising the aims, methodologies, experiment design, data processing methods and evaluation approaches. Furthermore, the review identifies several critical avenues for future research, including deeper exploration of cognitive dynamics in safety-critical environments, technology integration for real-time monitoring, longitudinal analysis of cognitive safety factors, cultural and gender influences on safety practices, and addressing special psychological conditions. This paper emphasises the importance of considering ethical implications, user acceptability, and practical deployment challenges. Overall, the paper makes effort towards guiding effective EEG integration in construction safety research for safer practices.
Mechanisms Behind Hazard Perception of Warning Signs: an EEG Study

Abstract:Warning signs are the most effective way to alert people to hazards in the industries, architecture, and transportation. To better understand how these warning signs prompted hazard, this study investigated the intrinsic mechanism of hazard perception of warning signs, including warning words (low versus high hazard levels) and surrounding shapes (upright triangle versus circle). We recruited 18 participants and recorded electroencephalogram (EEG). We found that a combination of high-hazard-level words and an upright triangle shape significantly elicited more negative N300 and increased theta-band (3-8 Hz) synchronization, but reduced beta-band (15-30 Hz) desynchronization. The N300 component represented the emotional arousal strength, theta oscillations reflected the engagement of retrieval of emotional experiences from episodic memory, and beta oscillation connoted the semantic encoding. Thus, these findings suggested that a high-hazard-level combination had the ability to obtain high priority in cognitive processing. The EEG pattern changes allowed us to assess whether the hazard perception of warning signs was high or low, which could be an accurate indicator to better evaluate the design of warning signs. Abstract:OBJECTIVE:The study aimed to reinvestigate psychological mechanisms of the influence of construction workers' experience on hazard recognition performance, with signal detection theory (SDT) and electroencephalogram (EEG) readings. BACKGROUND:Existing evidence regarding the effect of experience on hazard recognition performance in the construction industry remains inconsistent. Behavior-wise, identification of dominant hazard recognition factors (sensitivity or response bias, or both) would help determine appropriate training strategies to improve hazard recognition. In terms of neuro-responses, induced gamma-band activity was expected to reflect the cognitive functions mediating the psychological effects of experience. METHOD:Seventy-seven construction workers participated in a predesigned hazard recognition task, in which participants judged whether a hazard was present from a series of construction scenario pictures. We computed and compared the sensitivity and response bias of SDT and time-frequency representations of recorded EEG signals of the two experience-level groups. RESULTS:Novice workers had higher hazard recognition rates. Behavior-wise, novices were more sensitive than more experienced workers. Compared with experienced workers, novices showed stronger gamma-band difference power (hazardous minus safe) in the left frontal and right posterior parietal areas during the hazard recognition process. CONCLUSION:Novices performed better at hazard recognition, indicating their sensitivity to the hazards without a clear difference in response bias. Based on the EEG data, novices' sensitivity may be attributed to more efficient working memory and attentional control. APPLICATION:There is a need for continuous refreshment of hazard recognition skills for experienced workers for safety interventions.

Abstract:More than 70% of all accidents in constructions are related to human activities. Many researches reveal that higher hazards are associated with the complexity of activities that workers are performing. More recent studies in the area of neural science and psychology suggests that many accidents are caused by the lack of attention or attention distractions. Laborers are vulnerable while they are focusing on complicated construction tasks that requires too much attention. Therefore, assessing the attention level of workers could help to determine their vulnerability. However, there is no available measurement metrics that can help project managers to quantitatively monitor construction workers' mental condition. By comparing multiple quantitatively assessment metrics, this research aims at proposing an integrated framework to enable the assessment of the concentration level and the vulnerability of construction workers through wearable electroencephalography (EEG) safety helmets.

Abstract:Monitoring brain activity is a novel development for hazard recognition in the construction industry. However, very few empirical studies have investigated the causal connections within the brain. This study aimed to explore the brain connectivity of construction workers during hazard recognition. Electroencephalogram data were collected from construction workers to perform image-based hazard recognition tasks. The Granger causality-based adaptive directed transfer function was used to simulate directed and time-variant information flow across the observed brain activity from the perspective of cognitive psychology. The results suggested a top-down modulation of behavioral goals originating from the dorsal attention network during hazard relocation. The sensory cortex predominantly serves as the information outlet center and interacts extensively with the frontal and visual cortices, reflecting a top-down attention reorientation mechanism for processing threatening stimuli. Our findings of brain effective connectivity supplement new evidence underpinning parallel distributed processing theory for workplace hazard recognition.

Abstract:Many unsafe behaviors in construction are associated with workers' insufficient vigilance and misperception of risks. Safety signs are designed to provide warning and raise worker's attention in hazardous environments. Many researchers conducted interviews and questionnaires to assess the effectiveness of various safety sign designs; however, the results are deemed subjective and biased due to personal differences such as experience, age, attitude, and working environment. This study intends to develop an objective measurement paradigm to assess the cognitive loads of different design features. The proposed method adopts response time and reported accuracies as the metrics to reflect the perceptional efficiency of safety signs under selective, sustained, and divided attention tasks. Statistical analyses are also included to mitigate personal bias. As a demonstration, three design features (color, shape, and content) are examined and the results suggest that the red color and graphic content do not contribute to higher reported accuracies but are faster to be recognized and understood in visual search and scanning activities.

Abstract:Constant improvement in hazard identification is key to personnel safety in the workplace. Semantic cues have been proposed to simplify knowledge retrieval for site inspectors in building construction. However, the effectiveness of this approach and its internal mechanisms remain unexamined. This study assesses the influence of semantic cues on inspection performance from the perspective of visual behavior during elevator installation. Our results indicate that semantic cues drive selective attention toward goal-relevant information more effectively compared with when no such cues are provided. Second, semantic cues can improve performance regarding goal-relevant hazards and not diminish performance for incidental hazards. Third, the improvement of working memory and inspection performance is more pronounced in experienced workers than in novices. This research highlights the influence of semantic cues for hazard identification on visual behavior and inspection performance, and can serve as a foundation for the allocation of resources to aid inspection during construction.

Abstract:Construction companies can accrue losses due to labor fatalities and injuries. Since more than 70% of all accidents are related to human activities, detecting and mitigating human-related risks hold the key to improving the safety conditions within the construction industry. Previous research has revealed that the psychological and emotional conditions of workers can contribute to fatalities and injuries. Recent observations in the area of neural science and psychology suggest that inattentional blindness is one major cause of unexpected human related accidents. Due to the limitation of human mental workload, laborers are vulnerable to unexpected hazards while focusing on complicated construction tasks. Therefore, the ability to detect the mental conditions of workers could reduce unexpected injuries. However, there are currently no available measurement approaches or devices capable of monitoring construction workers' mental conditions. The research proposed in this paper aims to develop a measurement approach to evaluate hazards through neural time–frequency analysis. The experimental results show that neural signals are valid for mental load assessment of construction workers, especially the low frequency bands signals. The research also describes the development of a prototype for a wearable electroencephalography (EEG) safety helmet that enables the collection of the neural information required as input for the measurement approach.

Abstract:As a sector associated with high injury and fatality rates, the construction industry requires constant caution with regard to construction laborers during project execution. Different from people in other industries, construction workers are less sensitive to hazards because of their long-term exposure to risks. Therefore, maintaining construction workers' vigilance and monitoring their attention levels are critical to successful safety management practices. However, current attention-assessing approaches are post hoc and subjective and difficult to implement in construction practice. To address these issues, we propose a wireless and wearable electroencephalography (EEG) system to quantitatively and automatically assess construction workers' attention level through processing human brain signals. To validate the proposed system, we conducted an on-site experiment to analyze the EEG signal patterns when construction workers avoid different obstacles in their tasks. The results suggest EEG signal properties such as frequency, power spectrum density, and spatial distribution can effectively reflect and quantify the construction workers' perceived risk level. Especially, lower gamma frequency bands and the frontal left EEG cluster provide the most direct and observable indications of their vigilance states. These conclusions could facilitate the future implementation of wearable EEG devices through data filtering and channel optimization.

Besides, incorporating neutral pictorial symbols into the shapes can make the cognitive processing of the combined signs earlier while not influence the degree of processing compared to pure shapes. Furthermore, the combined signs (shapes + symbols) exhibit effects on processing at two stages: early emotion perceptual processing of the surrounding shape and subsequent cognitive processing guided by neutral pictorial symbols. Therefore, the current study can deepen our understanding of surrounding shape effect and provide effective solutions for safety sign designers to facilitate the efficiency of safety signs and reduce the occurrence of hazards and accidents.
The Neural Process of Hazard Perception and Evaluation for Warning Signal Words: Evidence from Event-Related Potentials

Abstract:Warning signs have been widely applied to industrial production. As an important component of warning signs, warning signal words were mostly studied by using questionnaire. This study used event-related potentials (ERPs) to explore neural temporal features during the processing of warning signal words in human brain, and found that there were two stages involved in processing warning signal words, providing an electrophysiological evidence for a previous warning information processing model, the Communication-Human Information Processing Model (C-HIP). Previous behavioral studies indicated that the subjective hazard perception of participants facilitates their attention to the warning sign, and people can get hazard information from warning words. Our results provided direct evidence for these conclusions. The present findings of significant differences in subjective hazard perception for warning words among individuals showed the importance and necessity of training for people to get the similar understanding of these words. Our results implicated that the warning words reflecting the same hazard level used in the warning sign should be somewhat changed, at the same time, convey equally or similarly hazardous information, to avoid desensitization and habituation due to overuse of them.
Perceptual decision-making 'in the wild': How risk propensity and injury exposure experience influence the neural signatures of occupational hazard recognition

Abstract:While previous studies have extensively explored the neural mechanisms of perceptual decision-making, most of them used paradigms with limited real-life consequences and largely neglected participants' individual differences. In this study, to resemble a perceptual decision-making scenario with real-life consequences, construction workers were recruited for an occupational hazard recognition task by categorizing construction site images as hazardous or safe with their EEG recorded. Event-related potential (ERP) analysis revealed distinct influences of perceptual decision-making by two dispositional factors of risk propensity and injury exposure experience. Risk propensity was positively correlated with the stimulus-locked difference waveforms (hazardous minus safe) at approximately 200 ms post-stimuli-onset over right-lateralized parietal-occipital areas. The difference waveforms showed reversed polarity between groups with high and low-risk propensity. Injury exposure experience was negatively correlated with the response-locked difference waveforms approximately 450 ms before motor response over right-lateralized parietal-occipital regions. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to report how individuals' injury exposure experience influenced the neural signatures of one's perceptual decision-making. These results extended previous findings for perceptual decision-making by setting up a scenario with high ecological validity and suggested possibly substantial different mechanisms for individual workers by the intrinsic factor of risk propensity and the extrinsic factor of injury exposure experience.

Abstract:Purpose Safety warnings remind construction workers about dangers and guide them to take necessary actions to avoid potential injuries, which could encourage their safe behavior. Workers' behavior compliance with the safety warnings would be impacted by the risk perception levels induced by the warnings. This study aims to examine whether the design of safety warnings would impact the induced risk perception of workers Design/methodology/approach This study compared the risk perception levels of construction workers when processing two forms of safety warnings, i.e., safety signs and safety comics, which are commonly used in construction workplaces. Construction workers (n = 20) volunteered for an experiment with an implicit paradigm to probe how they perceive these safety warnings, using event-related potentials (ERPs) features collected by an electroencephalogram (EEG) sensor to indicate the risk perception level Findings The results demonstrated that the design of safety warnings would impact the induced risk perception. The safety signs and safety comics performed differently in inducing the workers' risk perception. The safety signs representing prohibition and caution warnings induced significantly higher risk perception than the comics, and there were no significant differences regarding direction warnings Originality/value This is the first study to compare the risk perception levels between various forms of safety warnings presenting safety information in different ways. The findings would help to expand the knowledge of the relationship between the design of safety warnings and workers' safety behavioral compliance

Abstract:Developing real-time automatic intuitive devices based on electroencephalography (EEG) to improve hazard recognition performance (HRP) is essential in construction engineering management. However, existing studies generally developed devices based on unimodal data, failing to distinguish the role played by brain activities in different visual areas and ignoring the possible existence of other psychological mechanisms. Therefore, this study aims to use multimodal data based on brain-eye synergy to predict HRP and reveal the cognitive mechanism of hazard recognition to develop intuitive hazard recognition devices. Accordingly, we designed experiments to investigate this problem: (1) 53 construction workers completed a 120-trial hazard recognition task in a laboratory environment (N=6,360), (2) an EEG recorder collected the participants' EEG activities and an eye-tracking device recorded the data of eye movement, and (3) the power spectral density (PSD) of EEG was calculated and then imported into Matlab2018a in combination with EEGLAB for analysis. The results showed that the prediction results of hazard recognition have a time-variant effect. For fall-related hazards, EEG signals within 0-320 ms after the onset were significant in predicting HRP; for electric-related and fire-related hazards, EEG signals within 560-640 ms after the starting point were the most valuable. Also, compared with fall-related hazards, it took a significantly longer time to recognize electric-related and fire-related hazards, which consumed more attentional resources. Finally, the frontal lobe requires more attentional resources to finish cognitive activities than the occipital lobe to finish visual information processing activities, and the occipital lobe needs to process visual information first, and then transmit it to the frontal lobe for analysis and judgment. For the body of knowledge, this study, finding the time-variant effect of HRP, improves the theory of construction hazard recognition from an eye-brain synergy perspective and provides guidance for developing intuitive hazard recognition devices and improving management performance. This study combined eye-movement data and EEG data to predict the performance of hazard recognition using multimodal data. Not only did this study reveal the mechanism of hazard recognition, but it also proposed suggestions for project management and device development. Managers are suggested to implement refined management and regularly monitor the physiological signals of employees. Some construction companies started to use smart devices to measure workers' arousal, emotional valence, emotional regulation ability, fatigue, workload, or safety attention level before work every day. And it is recommended to provide safety reminders to employees based on whether there are any abnormalities in their physiological indicators. In addition to project management, the results of this study can serve the development or optimization of hazard recognition equipment. Developing devices cannot only consider EEG information, but also combine EEG information with eye-movement information. Meanwhile, developers can also consider different types of hazards and different brain regions to improve device performance.

Abstract:Falling hazards pose significant health and safety risks to workers. This paper investigated the correlation between visual attention and brain activity in the recognition of human and object falling hazards. Seventy construction workers were recruited and asked to identify hazards depicted in images while undergoing eye tracking and electroencephalography. Raw electroencephalography and eye movement data were cleaned using bandpass filtering and independent component analysis. The time-frequency representation method was then employed to compute the fixed correlation power spectrum. Compared with fixation onset, a distinct time lag in brain responses was observed during the identification of human and object falling hazards. The different refixations typically occurred around the peak of fixation-related power, corresponding to different trends over time. These results may help to enhance construction safety management based on physiological monitoring, provide a design basis for brain-computer interface safety warning devices, and improve the efficiency of hazard identification.

Abstract:The construction process is a dynamic one, and the complexity of the working conditions and the high level of uncertainty make the construction industry the third most dangerous industry after mining and agriculture. And since the construction industry is vital to the development of a country, safety during construction is of particular importance. A great deal of research, studies and practices have been conducted to reduce potential risks and improve worker efficiency during the construction process. In recent years, with the rapid development of cognitive neuroscience and the integration of medical technology, various wearable monitoring devices have been widely used in the field of building construction for real-time monitoring of workers' physical and mental conditions. Among them, the application of EEG (electroencephalogram) in the building construction process enables researchers to gain insight into the physical and mental state of construction workers while performing construction tasks. This paper introduces EEG technology and portable EEG monitoring equipment and summarizes its application in monitoring workers' adverse reactions (emotion, fatigue, psychological burden, and vigilance) and construction hazard identification during the process of construction in recent years, which provides future EEG research in the field of building construction and construction site safety management.
