Abstract:The contemporary carbon balance over the Tibetan Plateau is highly uncertain with a ten-fold difference between various estimates. In a warming world, the potential exists for a large carbon release from its permafrost which could compromise China's 2060 carbon-neutral goal. Here, we used a satellite- and inventory-based approach, ecosystem models, and atmospheric inversions to estimate that the carbon sink was 33.12–37.84 TgC yr −1 during 2000–2015. The carbon sink induced by climate change and increasing CO 2 levels largely overcompensated for a livestock grazing-induced carbon source of 0.38 TgC yr −1 . By 2060, the carbon sink is projected to increase by 38.3–74.5% under moderate to high emissions scenarios, with the enhanced vegetation carbon uptake outweighing the warming-induced permafrost carbon release. The restoration of degraded grassland could sequestrate an additional 9.06 TgC yr −1 , leading to a total carbon sink of 57.78–70.52 TgC yr −1 . We conclude that the Tibetan Plateau's ecosystems absorbed two-and-a-half times the amount of its cumulative fossil CO 2 emissions during 2000–2015 and that their carbon sinks will almost double in strength in the future, helping to achieve China's pledge to become carbon neutral by 2060.

Abstract:Enhancing carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems has become a key strategy for mitigating climate change. The Tibetan Plateau holds a pivotal position in achieving carbon neutrality, with the structural pattern of its land use types directly impacting the region's ecosystem carbon storage capacity. However, there is still a lack of understanding of the spatial distribution of carbon storage in their ecosystems. This study targeted the Tibetan Plateau, utilizing land use data from 2000 to 2020, and employed the Patch-generating Land Use Simulation (PLUS) model to project land use patterns for 2030. By integrating future climate change projections, this study forecasted land use under SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, and SSP5-8.5 scenarios. The Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) model was employed to quantify carbon storage from 2000 to 2030, while the GeoDetector model was used to explore the driving influences of factors such as the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), Leaf Area Index (LAI), Net Primary Productivity (NPP), population density, and road network density on carbon storage. The results revealed that: (1) Grassland predominated the land use types on the Tibetan Plateau, with most types having a stability of over 70%, whereas significant changes were observed in the western Tibet Autonomous Region and southern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. (2) Carbon storage on the Tibetan Plateau generally followed a tendency towards an initial decrease followed by an increase, with an average annual reduction of 50,107,371.79 Mg. The SSP1-2.6 scenario demonstrated the most substantial increase in carbon storage, being 18 times the natural trend, while the SSP5-8.5 scenario indicated the largest decrease. (3) Over the two decades, NDVI emerged as the most influential driver of carbon storage on the Tibetan Plateau, which was maintained at around 0.4, with the interaction between NDVI and NDWI exerting the strongest driving force, which was maintained at around 0.45. The conversion to forestland and grassland was the primary factor accounting for the change in carbon storage. Based on these results, despite the absence of empirical carbon density data, the SSP1-2.6 scenario could be regarded as a reference pathway for carbon storage changes on the Tibetan Plateau. Solely focusing on enhancing carbon storage by converting low-carbon land uses to high-carbon land uses is misguided; sustainable development represents the optimal approach for augmenting carbon storage on the Tibetan Plateau.

Abstract:Abstract The observed global net land carbon sink is captured by current land models. All models agree that atmospheric CO 2 and nitrogen deposition driven gains in carbon stocks are partially offset by climate and land-use and land-cover change (LULCC) losses. However, there is a lack of consensus in the partitioning of the sink between vegetation and soil, where models do not even agree on the direction of change in carbon stocks over the past 60 years. This uncertainty is driven by plant productivity, allocation, and turnover response to atmospheric CO 2 (and to a smaller extent to LULCC), and the response of soil to LULCC (and to a lesser extent climate). Overall, differences in turnover explain ~70% of model spread in both vegetation and soil carbon changes. Further analysis of internal plant and soil (individual pools) cycling is needed to reduce uncertainty in the controlling processes behind the global land carbon sink.

Abstract:Land-use alterations exert a profound impact on carbon storage within terrestrial ecosystems. Exploring the spatiotemporal dynamics of regional land use and carbon storage is crucial for optimizing national spatial planning and fostering low-carbon development. For this study, we utilized land-use data spanning from 2000 to 2020 for the Tibetan Plateau and assessed the spatial and temporal variations in carbon storage using the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) model. We adjusted the carbon density within the provinces in the study area as a prerequisite. Moreover, we integrated the Grey Multi-objective Decision-making (GMMOP) model with the Patch-generating Land-use Simulation (PLUS) model to forecast carbon storage alterations in 2030 across various scenarios. The findings indicated that between 2000 and 2020, the overall carbon storage witnessed a decrease of 18.94 × 108 t. Carbon storage in grassland decreased by 22.10 × 108 t, and carbon storage in unused land, forest land, cultivated land, construction land, and water increased by 1.56 × 108 t, 0.92 × 108 t, 0.66 × 108 t, 158.50 × 104 t and 26.74 × 104 t, respectively. The soil organic carbon pool exhibited the highest average carbon storage of 195.63 × 108 t, whereas the litterfall organic carbon pool contained the lowest average carbon stock of 15.07 × 108 t. In comparison with the levels observed in 2020, the total carbon storage experienced a reduction of 8.66 × 108 t and 5.29 × 108 t under the inherent progression and economic growth scenarios, respectively. Conversely, it rose by 11.87 × 108 t and 16.21 × 108 t under the environmental preservation and holistic progression scenarios, respectively. Under the holistic progression scenario, the belowground biomass organic carbon pool exhibited the highest carbon storage increase of 5.59%. These findings offer valuable insights for the management and enhancement of carbon sinks in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Abstract:The Tibet Plateau, with its extensive carbon pools, plays a pivotal role in the global carbon budget. Nevertheless, the driving factors of the carbon dioxide budget remain disputed, and the impact of freeze–thaw process on carbon release is still unclear due to the harsh climate and lack of monitoring data. To clarify the primary factors affecting the alpine meadow ecosystems and to examine the impact of freeze–thaw on carbon release, we employed the LI-8150 automated continuous measurement system. This system, in conjunction with eddy covariance meteorological data, The Boosted Regression Tree (BRT) model, and multiple stepwise regression analysis, were used to analyze the seasonal variations in carbon flux (e.g., net ecosystem carbon exchange [NEE], gross primary productivity [GPP], and ecosystem respiration [R eco ]). We also investigate the carbon sources and sinks in the alpine meadow ecosystem, as well as the predominant factor of carbon flux. Our findings include: (1) the carbon sources and sinks in the alpine meadow ecosystem shift seasonally on monthly and daily scales. On a monthly scale, the ecosystem functions as a moderate carbon sink in June, July, August, and September and as a weak carbon source from October through May. (2) Overall, the alpine meadow ecosystem, located in the northeastern Qinghai Lake basin, serves as a weak carbon sink (-58.53 g C m −2 year −1 ). (3) Soil temperature is the primary factor driving most variations observed in NEE, R eco , and GPP, contributing 48.05 %, 78.61 %, and 65.05 %, respectively. Soil temperature, soil water dynamics influenced by freeze and thaw processes, and their interaction with plant growth collectively play a crucial role in regulating the carbon sources and sinks in ecosystems. We provide first-hand observational data for monitoring the carbon sources and sinks in the alpine meadow ecosystem of the Tibet Plateau, as well as offer future guidance for studying the carbon budget of the Tibet Plateau.

Abstract:Information about the uncertainties associated with eddy covariance observations of surface-atmosphere CO2 exchange is of importance for model-data fusion in carbon cycling studies and the accurate evaluation of ecosystem carbon budgeting. In this paper, a comprehensive analysis was conducted to investigate the influence of data processing procedures, focusing especially on the nocturnal data correction and three procedures in nonlinear regression method of gap filling [i.e., the selection of respiration model (REM), light-response model (LRM) and parameter optimization criteria (POC)], on the annual net ecosystem CO2 exchange estimation at three forest ecosystems in ChinaFLUX with three yearly datasets for each site. The results showed that uncertainties caused from four methodological uncertainties were between 61 and 108 g C m−2 year−1, with 61–93 g C m−2 year−1 (21–30%) in a temperate mixed forest, 80–107 g C m−2 year−1 (19–21%) in a subtropical evergreen coniferous plantation and 77–108 g C m−2 year−1 (16–19%) in a subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest. Factorial analysis indicated that the largest uncertainty was associated with the choice of POC in the regression method across all sites in all years, while the influences of the choice of models (i.e., REM and LRM) varied with climate conditions at the measurement station. Furthermore, the uncertainty caused by data processing procedures was of approximately the same magnitude as the interannual variability in the three sites. This result stressed the importance to understand the uncertainty caused by data processing to avoid the introduction of artificial between-year and between-site variability that hampers comparative analysis.
Spatially-explicit estimate of soil nitrogen stock and its implication for land model across Tibetan alpine permafrost region

Abstract:Permafrost soils store a large amount of nitrogen (N) which could be activated under the continuous climate warming. However, compared with carbon (C) stock, little is known about the size and spatial distribution of permafrost N stock. By combining measurements from 519 pedons with two machine learning models (supporting vector machine (SVM) and random forest (RF)), we estimated the size and spatial distribution of N stock across the Tibetan alpine permafrost region. We then compared these spatially-explicit N estimates with simulated N stocks from the Community Land Model (CLM). We found that N density (N amount per area) in the top three meters was 1.58 kg N m-2 (interquartile range: 1.40-1.76) across the study area, constituting a total of 1802 Tg N (interquartile range: 1605-2008), decreasing from the southeast to the northwest of the plateau. N stored below 1 m accounted for 48% of the total N stock in the top three meters. CLM4.5 significantly underestimated the N stock on the Tibetan Plateau, primarily in areas with arid/semi-arid climate. The process of biological N fixation played a key role in the underestimation of N stock prediction. Overall, our study highlights that it is imperative to improve the simulation of N processes and permafrost N stocks in land models to better predict ecological consequences induced by rapid and widespread permafrost degradation.

Abstract:Aim The Tibetan Plateau accounts for about a quarter of the total land area of China and has a variety of ecosystems ranging from alpine tundra to evergreen tropics. Its soils are dominated by permafrost and are rich in organic carbon. Its climate is unique due to the influence of the Asian monsoon and its complex topography. To date, the carbon dynamics of the Tibetan Plateau have not been well quantified under changes of climate and permafrost conditions. Here we use a process-based biogeochemistry model, the Terrestrial Ecosystem Model (TEM), which was incorporated with a soil thermal model, to examine the permafrost dynamics and their effects on carbon dynamics on the plateau during the past century. Location The Tibetan Plateau. Methods We parameterize and verify the TEM using the existing data for soil temperature, permafrost distribution and carbon and nitrogen from the region. We then extrapolate the model and parameters to the whole plateau. Results During the 20th century, the Tibetan Plateau changed from a small carbon source or neutral in the early part of the century to a sink later, with a large inter-annual and spatial variability due to changes of climate and permafrost conditions. Net primary production and soil respiration increased by 0.52 and 0.22 Tg C year-1, respectively, resulting in a regional carbon sink increase of 0.3 Tg C year-1. By the end of the century, the regional carbon sink reached 36 Tg C year-1 and carbon storage in vegetation and soils is 32 and 16 Pg C, respectively. On the plateau, from west to east, the net primary production, soil respiration and net ecosystem production increased, due primarily to the increase of air temperature and precipitation and lowering elevation. In contrast, the decrease of carbon fluxes from south to north was primarily controlled by precipitation gradient. Dynamics of air temperature and associated soil temperature and active layer depth resulted in a higher plant carbon uptake than soil carbon release, strengthening the regional carbon sink during the century. Main conclusions We found that increasing soil temperature and deepening active layer depth enhanced soil respiration, increasing the net nitrogen mineralization rate. Together with the effects of warming air temperature and rising CO2 concentrations on photosynthesis, the stronger plant nitrogen uptake due to the enhanced available nitrogen stimulates plant carbon uptake, thereby strengthening the regional carbon sink as the rate of increase net primary production was faster than that of soil respiration. Further, the warming and associated soil thermal dynamics shifted the regional carbon sink from the middle of July in the early 20th century to early July by the end of the century. Our study suggests that soil thermal dynamics should be considered for future quantification of carbon dynamics in this climate-sensitive region.

Abstract:Abstract Background The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is the “sensitive area” of climate change, and also the “driver” and “amplifier” of global change. The response and feedback of its carbon dynamics to climate change will significantly affect the content of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. However, due to the unique geographical environment characteristics of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, there is still much controversy about its carbon source and sink estimation results. This study designed a new algorithm based on machine learning to improve the accuracy of carbon source and sink estimation by integrating multiple scale carbon input (net primary productivity, NPP) and output (soil heterotrophic respiration, Rh) information from remote sensing and ground observations. Then, we compared spatial patterns of NPP and Rh derived from the fusion of multiple scale data with other widely used products and tried to quantify the differences and uncertainties of carbon sink simulation at a regional scale. Results Our results indicate that although global warming has potentially increased the Rh of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, it will also increase its NPP, and its current performance is a net carbon sink area (carbon sink amount is 22.3 Tg C/year). Comparative analysis with other data products shows that CASA, GLOPEM, and MODIS products based on remote sensing underestimate the carbon input of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (30–70%), which is the main reason for the severe underestimation of the carbon sink level of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (even considered as a carbon source). Conclusions The estimation of the carbon sink in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is of great significance for ensuring its ecological barrier function. It can deepen the community’s understanding of the response to climate change in sensitive areas of the plateau. This study can provide an essential basis for assessing the uncertainty of carbon sources and sinks in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and also provide a scientific reference for helping China achieve “carbon neutrality” by 2060.

Permafrost Thawing Puts the Frozen Carbon at Risk over the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:Soil organic carbon (SOC) stored in permafrost across the high-latitude/altitude Northern Hemisphere represents an important potential carbon source under future warming. Here, we provide a comprehensive investigation on the spatiotemporal dynamics of SOC over the high-altitude Tibetan Plateau (TP), which has received less attention compared with the circum-Arctic region. The permafrost region covers ~42% of the entire TP and contains ~37.21 Pg perennially frozen SOC at the baseline period (2006-2015). With continuous warming, the active layer is projected to further deepen, resulting in ~1.86 ± 0.49 Pg and ~3.80 ± 0.76 Pg permafrost carbon thawing by 2100 under moderate and high representative concentration pathways (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5), respectively. This could largely offset the regional carbon sink and even potentially turn the region into a net carbon source. Our findings also highlight the importance of deep permafrost thawing that is generally ignored in current Earth system models.
Assessment of Uncertainty Sources in Snow Cover Simulation in the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:Snow cover over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) plays an important role in Asian climate. State-of-the-art models, however, show significant simulation biases. In this study, we assess the main uncertainty associated with model physics in snow cover modeling over the TP using ground-based observations and high-resolution snow cover satellite products from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and FengYun-3B (FY3B). We first conducted 10-km simulations using the Noah with multiparameterization (Noah-MP) land surface model by optimizing physics-scheme options, which reduces 8.2% absolute bias of annual snow cover fraction (SCF) compared with the default model settings. Then, five SCF parameterizations in Noah-MP were optimized and assessed, with three of them further reducing the annual SCF biases from around 15% to less than 2%. Thus, optimizing SCF parameterizations appears to be more important than optimizing physics-scheme options in reducing the uncertainty of snow modeling. As a result of improved SCF, the positive bias of simulated surface albedo decreases significantly compared to the GLASS albedo data, particularly in high-elevation regions. This substantially enhances the absorbed solar radiation and further reduces the annual mean biases of ground temperature from -3.5 to -0.8 degrees C and snow depth from 4.2 to 0.2 mm. However, the optimized model still overestimates SCF in the western TP and underestimates SCF in the eastern TP. Further analysis using a higher-resolution (4 km) simulation driven by topographically adjusted air temperature shows slight improvement, suggesting a rather limited contribution of the finer-scale land surface characteristics to SCF uncertainty.
Terrestrial vegetation carbon sink analysis and driving mechanism identification in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Abstract:The estimation of terrestrial carbon sinks in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) still faces significant uncertainties, and the spatiotemporal dynamics of terrestrial carbon sinks along altitudinal gradients remain unexplored. Moreover, the driving mechanisms of terrestrial carbon sinks at the watershed scale in the QTP continue to be lacking. To address these research gaps, based on multi-source remote sensing data and meteorological data, this study calculated the Net Ecosystem Productivity (NEP) in the QTP from 2000 to 2020 using the Modis NPP-soil respiration model. Through the coefficient of variation (CV), the Mann-Kendall test (MK), and the spatial autocorrelation methods, the spatial distribution pattern and spatiotemporal trends of NEP were investigated. Employing a pixel accumulation method, the variation of NEP along altitudinal gradients was explored. Grey relation analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, and Geographical detector (GD) were used to investigate the driving mechanisms of NEP at the watershed scale. Results showed that: (1) the terrestrial ecosystem in the QTP served as a carbon sink, which produced a total of 2.04 Pg C from 2000 to 2020, and the multi-year average of total carbon sinks was 96.92 Tg C; (2) the spatial distribution of NEP shows a decreasing change from southeast to northwest, and the clustering characteristic of NEP is significant at the watershed scale; (3) the elevation of 4507 m we proposed is likely to be a key threshold for biophysical processes of the terrestrial ecosystems in the QTP; (4) the fluctuation and change trend of carbon sources and carbon sinks show significant differences between the East and West; (5) at the watershed scale, precipitation and temperature play a dominant role in the variation of NEP, while the impact of human activities on NEP variation is weak. Our study aims to address the existing knowledge gaps and provide valuable insights into the management of terrestrial carbon sinks in QTP.

Abstract:The permafrost organic carbon (OC) stock is of global significance because of its large pool size and the potential positive feedback to climate warming. However, due to the lack of systematic field observations and appropriate upscaling methodologies, substantial uncertainties exist in the permafrost OC budget, which limits our understanding of the fate of frozen carbon in a warming world. In particular, the lack of comprehensive estimates of OC stocks across alpine permafrost means that current knowledge on this issue remains incomplete. Here, we evaluated the pool size and spatial variations of permafrost OC stock to 3 m depth on the Tibetan Plateau by combining systematic measurements from a substantial number of pedons (i.e. 342 three‐metre‐deep cores and 177 50‐cm‐deep pits) with a machine learning technique (i.e. support vector machine, SVM). We also quantified uncertainties in permafrost carbon budget by conducting Monte Carlo simulations. Our results revealed that the combination of systematic measurements with the SVM model allowed spatially explicit estimates to be made. The OC density (OC amount per unit area, OCD) exhibited a decreasing trend from the south‐eastern to the north‐western plateau, with the exception that OCD in the swamp meadow was substantially higher than that in surrounding regions. Our results also demonstrated that Tibetan permafrost stored a large amount of OC in the top 3 m, with the median OC pool size being 15.31 Pg C (interquartile range: 13.03–17.77 Pg C). 44% of OC occurred in deep layers (i.e. 100–300 cm), close to the proportion observed across the northern circumpolar permafrost region. The large carbon pool size together with significant permafrost thawing suggests a risk of carbon emissions and positive climate feedback across the Tibetan alpine permafrost region.

Abstract:The sign and magnitude of permafrost carbon (C)-climate feedback are highly uncertain due to the limited understanding of the decomposability of thawing permafrost and relevant mechanistic controls over C release. Here, by combining aerobic incubation with biomarker analysis and a three-pool model, we reveal that C quality (represented by a higher amount of fast cycling C but a lower amount of recalcitrant C compounds) and normalized CO2-C release in permafrost deposits were similar or even higher than those in the active layer, demonstrating a high vulnerability of C in Tibetan upland permafrost. We also illustrate that C quality exerts the most control over CO2-C release from the active layer, whereas soil microbial abundance is more directly associated with CO2-C release after permafrost thaw. Taken together, our findings highlight the importance of incorporating microbial properties into Earth System Models when predicting permafrost C dynamics under a changing environment.

Abstract:Tibetan permafrost largely formed during the late Pleistocene glacial period and shrank in the Holocene Thermal Maximum period. Quantifying the impacts of paleoclimatic extremes on soil carbon stock can shed light on the vulnerability of permafrost carbon in the future. Here, we synthesize data from 1114 sites across the Tibetan permafrost region to report that paleoclimate is more important than modern climate in shaping current permafrost carbon distribution, and its importance increases with soil depth, mainly through forming the soilʼs physiochemical properties. We derive a new estimate of modern soil carbon stock to 3 m depth by including the paleoclimate effects, and find that the stock ( 36.6_ - 2.4^ + 2.3 PgC) is triple that predicted by ecosystem models (11.5 ± 4.2 s.e.m PgC), which use pre-industrial climate to initialize the soil carbon pool. The discrepancy highlights the urgent need to incorporate paleoclimate information into model initialization for simulating permafrost soil carbon stocks.

Abstract:As one of the most sensitive regions to climate change on the Earth's surface, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is experiencing lasting warming, which has been evidenced to enhance surface carbon uptake but also could lead to carbon emission due to accelerated permafrost degradation and ecosystem respiration. Due to the difficulties of limited observations and imperfect modeling techniques, whether the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is a carbon sink or source has been an ongoing debate. The recent satellite XCO2 Observations could provide some useful constraints on the carbon budget in this region. Here, based on the recent OCO-2 XCO2 observations and the inversion results from the OCO-2 v10 MIP, we estimated the net biome carbon fluxes for the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Our results suggest that this region has become a carbon source (around -0.10 PgC/year) already, which is supported by an upscaling estimate with intensified eddy covariance flux measurements over China. Meanwhile, we found this carbon source signal is not detected by either in-situ CO2 inversions or terrestrial biosphere model simulations. Currently, although some studies based on flux measurements report this region is a carbon sink and even keeps increasing recently, many others hold opposite viewpoints about it. Our result provides an important piece of evidence supporting that the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau becomes a carbon source, albeit additional evidence is needed, especially from in-situ CO2 observations and aerial CO2 observations (e.g., by aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicle, and AirCore). In principle, atmospheric CO2 measurements could provide a more complete picture of the carbon budget in this region compared to discrete and limited eddy flux measurements. In the future, enhanced in-situ and aerial CO2 observations are expected to disentangle the puzzle of this carbon budget issue in this region.

Abstract:The changes in the recent and future spatial–temporal patterns of carbon storage of the Tibetan Plateau and its dominant factors in different periods were unclear, and were conducive to optimizing the spatial layout of land. Exploring the spatial and temporal changes in terrestrial ecosystem carbon storage and their influencing factors during a long study period had important theoretical and practical significance for achieving the goal of carbon neutrality. In this study, the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs model (InVEST) was used to analyze the changes in carbon storage based on vegetation-type data during 2000–2020. The Path-generating Land-Use Simulation model (PLUS) was then used to predict the spatial distribution of carbon storage in the Tibetan Plateau in 2030 and 2060 under inertial development, farmland protection and ecology priority scenarios. The results showed that: (1) The degradation of vegetation types reduced the carbon storage during the study period. During 2000–2020, the desert shrub and non-vegetation area expanded by 63.21% and 13.35%, respectively, while the deciduous scrub, mixed forest and low coverage grassland decreased accordingly. The carbon storage of the Tibetan Plateau showed a decreasing trend by 0.37 × 106 t. (2) The spatial distribution patterns of carbon storage were consistent with that of the vegetation types. (3) In 2030 and 2060, under the constraint of the ecological priority development, the reduction in carbon storage was the smallest, at 0.01 × 106 t and 0.16 × 106 t, respectively. Under the constraint of the inertial development, carbon storage had the largest reduction, at 0.12 × 106 t and 0.43 × 106 t, respectively. (4) During 2000–2020, the dominant single factor that had the greatest impacts on the changes in carbon storage was FVC (vegetation coverage), with q values of 0.616, 0.619 and 0.567, respectively. The interactive dominant effects were mainly nonlinear enhancement and double-factor enhancement. The interactive dominant factors that had the greatest impact were FVC and the DEM (Digital Elevation Model), with q values of 0.94, 0.92 and 0.90, respectively. Therefore, ecological land with a high FVC should be protected and the expansion of non-vegetation areas should be restricted in future planning to improve the carbon storage level of the Tibetan Plateau and achieve the goal of carbon neutrality.

Abstract:Revealing the spatial–temporal evolution of carbon storage and its driving mechanisms in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau could provide support for decision making in the protection of regional ecosystems and the achievement of regional dual-carbon goals. In this study, the spatial–temporal evolution of carbon storage in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau was analyzed under various scenarios using PLUS-InVEST and a gravity center model, and the driving mechanisms of carbon storage were clarified with Geodetector. The results are as follows: (1) During 2000–2020, the areas of coniferous forest, evergreen broad-leaved forest, closed shrub, temperate shrub desert, multi-tree grassland, and grassland showed an increasing trend, while the areas of deciduous broad-leaved forest and mixed forest showed a decreasing trend. (2) During 2030–2060, there was a decreasing trend in the total carbon storage of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau under three different scenarios. (3) During 2030–2060, the area of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau was mostly represented by carbon balance (56%), while the areas of carbon sources and carbon sinks showed a scattered distribution. (4) The precipitation and topographic factors with a q value of 0.888 played a dominant role in affecting the spatio-temporal variations in carbon storage in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. (5) In future ecological protection and restoration efforts, more high-quality farmlands should be protected and constructed, which could contribute to the achievement of dual-carbon goals. In addition, the hydrothermal conditions should be improved to aid the carbon cycle process in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau.

Abstract:Permafrost soils store large amounts of carbon. Warming can result in carbon release from thawing permafrost, but it can also lead to enhanced primary production, which can increase soil carbon stocks. The balance of these fluxes determines the nature of the permafrost feedback to warming. Here we assessed decadal changes in soil organic carbon stocks in the active layer—the uppermost 30 cm—of permafrost soils across Tibetan alpine regions, based on repeated soil carbon measurements in the early 2000s and 2010s at the same sites. We observed an overall accumulation of soil organic carbon irrespective of vegetation type, with a mean rate of 28.0 g C m−2 yr−1 across Tibetan permafrost regions. This soil organic carbon accrual occurred only in the subsurface soil, between depths of 10 and 30 cm, mainly induced by an increase of soil organic carbon concentrations. We conclude that the upper active layer of Tibetan alpine permafrost currently represents a substantial regional soil carbon sink in a warming climate, implying that carbon losses of deeper and older permafrost carbon might be offset by increases in upper-active-layer soil organic carbon stocks, which probably results from enhanced vegetation growth. Climate change is expected to release carbon stored in permafrost soils. Sampling of sites across the Tibetan Plateau in the early 2000s and early 2010s reveals increased carbon stocks in shallow soils, which may offset losses from deeper soils.
