Abstract:Cervantes' great novel is commented on from the point of view of a clinical psychoanalyst. Don Quixote had the noble aim to defend maidens, protect widows and come to the aid of orphans and those in need, in an attempt to restore what he saw as the Golden Age. He was aware that his beliefs were based on illusion but he needed these illusions, which served as a protective shield against reality. What he could not bear was to recognize that the destructiveness not only came from external persecutors, but also arose from within himself. When he was finally defeated he began to recognize that he was loved, and he then no longer had the need to be admired. The psychoanalyst can learn to understand the complexities of the relationship between phantasy and reality, and madness and sanity.

Abstract:Widely translated and adapted in eighteenth-century England, Don Quixote inspired some of the period's greatest fiction. Yet while literary adaptations of Cervantes's novel often render its humor “amiable” and accommodate it to polite society, dramatic adaptations instead accentuate its low comedy and farce. This paper argues that dramatic entertainments should factor into discussions of the novel's extraordinary influence in eighteenth-century England. Thomas D'Urfey's popular trilogy, The Comical History of Don Quixote (1694–95), and several of its successors augment the base characteristics of Sancho and employ physical violence and cruelty to women and lower characters, showing that low comedy thrived in not only marginalized genres like jestbooks and comic illustrations, but also popular drama.

Abstract:A classic character brought to myth rank, Cervantes’s Quixote was tackled philosophically, by Miguel de Unamuno in his essay Vida de Don Quixote y Sancho, 1905 on the realm of Spanish literature; we have been recently amazed from a postmodern, even postcolonial perspective, by Salman Rushie (Quichotte, 2019) and dramatically on the stage of the National Theatre of Iași by Carmen Dominte who initially proposed The Quixote Syndrome (2021) as a theatrical performance meant to be read. Without dealing with the adaptations in various arts (Minkus’s ballet), we will study the resilience of a character with reference to the above texts and what was left of it on stage with insights into adaptation theory and theatrical interpretation in the context of pandemic distancing.

Abstract:The objective of this study is to present the meaning, complexity, innovation, and relevance of Don Quixote ’s narrative structure within the literary tradition. First, this chapter reviews the diverse perspectives and interpretations among scholars when attempting to establish the narrative structure created by Cervantes. It highlights the directions in which scholars have, over time, been arguing about the narrative structure of Don Quixote , to show how some enigmas remain unsolved. Second, this piece re-examines previous literature with the goal of solving some of the unexplained gaps in the narrative and framing the relevance of the structure in Don Quixote , which is one of the main pillars supporting the argument that Cervantes’s masterpiece is the first modern novel.

Abstract:In Don Quijote de la Mancha, Miguel de Cervantes presents Don Quixote as an amazing character of the 17th century who suffers from delusions and illusions, believing himself to be a medieval knight errant. Besides this neuropsychiatric condition, Cervantes included masterful descriptions of several sleep disorders such as insomnia, sleep deprivation, disruptive loud snoring and rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder. In addition, he described the occurrence of physiological, vivid dreams and habitual, post-prandial sleepiness--the siesta. Cervantes' concept of sleep as a passive state where all cerebral activities are almost absent is in conflict with his description of abnormal behaviours during sleep and vivid, fantastic dreams. His concept of sleep was shared by his contemporary, Shakespeare, and could have been influenced by the reading of the classical Spanish book of psychiatry Examen de Ingenios (1575).

Abstract:This research project studies the real and the ideal in Miguel de Cervantes’s Don Quixote from a Hegelian dialectic perspective. Hegel’s framework of thesis, antithesis and synthesis is applicable to the analysis of the opposing themes of idealism and realism in the novel. Three main questions have been dealt with: First, what makes up Don Quixote’s idealism? Second, what are the main components of realism that stand in his way? Third, what is the outcome of the interaction between the ideal and the real? The study has managed to answer its key research questions: First, idealism in the novel is exemplified by Don Quixote who believes in chivalry principles as unquestionably truthful and genuine. Second, realism is mainly represented by Sancho and the characters that are concerned with immediate practical preoccupations and material matters. Third, Quixote’s application of his version of idealism witnesses a transfer towards a concession to the real world that, in turn, makes a significant transference to reconcile with Don Quixote’s ideals. Applying the thesis-antithesis-synthesis dialectic approach to analyze conflicting themes is a productive exploration of literature.

Abstract:The case of a 50-year-old hidalgo who believed to be transformed into a knight-errant named Don Quijote is a megalomaniac systematized delusion of transformation of the self, a delusion of metamorphosis in reference to the patient's own identity. The outward projection of this syndrome produces some delusional misidentifications of others, things and animals and include elements of a persecutory delusion which increase the grandiosity of the self. At the same time the hidalgo was maniac with a pathway of bipolar disorder. The phenomenon of donquijotismo is described as the defence of wasted causes and Sancho Panza as an illiterate Sócrates.

Abstract:Chen Zhongyi＇s The spear of Don Quixote uses the image of Don Quixote as an aesthetic inspiration and carries out a profound exploration into the aesthetic modernity of world literature.This paper,citing quixotic idealism as motivation,reveals the significance of the rationality in ethicality and the subjectivity in abnormality to world literature.It then reveals that the aesthetic modernity of the image of Don Quixote originates from the relative aesthetics which is characterized by the unity of two opposities：social rationality which takes ethicality as its core and subjectivity which has abnormality as its main feature.

Abstract:Don Quixote de la Mancha, which is considered one of the most important and influential works of Western modern prose, contains many references of interest for almost all of the medical specialties. In this regard, numerous references to neurology can be found in Cervantes' immortal work. In this study, we aimed to read Don Quixote from a neurologist's point of view, describing the neurological phenomena scattered throughout the novel, including tremors, sleep disturbances, neuropsychiatric symptoms, dementia, epilepsy, paralysis, stroke, syncope, traumatic head injury, and headache; we relate these symptoms with depictions of those conditions in the medical literature of the time. We also review Cervantes' sources of neurological information, including the works by renowned Spanish authors such as Juan Huarte de San Juan, Dionisio Daza Chacón and Juan Valverde de Amusco, and we hypothesize that Don Quixote's disorder was actually a neurological condition. Although Cervantes wrote it four centuries ago, Don Quixote contains plenty of references to neurology, and many of the ideas and concepts reflected in it are still of interest.

Abstract:Cervantes published the two volumes of his masterpiece Don Quixote in early 17th century that came to be known as the first modern novel as well as a precursor to the postmodern novel. This book is considered as a canon in Western literary tradition and is one of the most translated works. The novel has the dichotomy of ideal and real at its core, however, it deals with a multitude of themes through its complex narrative. This metafictional text that continues to inspire its readers even today, questions the definition of authorship as well as readership. It holds a special relevance in every age since the publication of its first volume in 1605, nevertheless, for varied reasons. In the present work, a detailed study is done to understand the multivalence and relevance of the myth of Don Quixote in different ages that are characterised by their distinct epistemic beliefs.

Abstract:This article presents the stance taken by José Ortega y Gasset in the debate that took place in early-twentieth-century Spain regarding the convenience of reading Don Quixote in schools. To this end, we start by describing, albeit briefly, the state of Ortega y Gasset’s thought in 1920, when he writes Biología y pedagogía, the essay with which we shall concern ourselves. According to Ortega y Gasset, Don Quixote must not be read in the classroom because it does not contribute to the development of the students’ spontaneous life, or natura naturans. In order to foster this development, Ortega y Gasset suggests leaving Don Quixote aside and resort to myths such as Odysseus or Heracles because their exploits would excite the students’ vital pulse. However, we suggest several reasons why the aim stated by Ortega y Gasset —and several other highly valuable educational benefits— could be reached resorting to the reading of selected passages of Don Quixote instead of the feats of Odysseus and Heracles.

Cervantes refleja la tensión entre la resignación recomendada por los humanistas y la ansiedad revelada por las prácticas testamentales. Al final, Alonso Quijano el Bueno confiesa y dicta un testamento conforme a los ars moriendi. Sin embargo, el inventario de bienes en la primera parte es menos virtuoso. El cura y el barbero catalogan y destruyen la biblioteca antes de que el protagonista pueda hacer su testamento, robándole la oportunidad de resignar a sus bienes.
The Spanish Baroque Novel

Abstract:Don Quixote ’s immediate success in Spain and abroad provides us with many tools to analyze the development of the novel in early modern culture not only from aesthetic and political perspectives, but from social and financial ones as well. This novel is also a pioneer for other reasons: the publication of its first part in 1605 coincides with what traditional historiography has considered the “Spanish Baroque,” a period covering a century of unparalleled artistic achievements but also of relentless historical decay. In masterpiece after masterpiece, through genres like the picaresque and the novela cortesana and formats like the short story and the comedia novelada , authors from Miguel de Cervantes (1547–1616) to Francisco Santos (1623–1698) elevate the novel where their Renaissance fathers had taken poetry a century earlier, to a veritable “Golden Age.” Framing the analysis in the wider European tradition, this chapter examines some of the greatest achievements of this era in Spain, taking into account those same parameters cited above that made Cervantes’s creation such a successful one.

Abstract:The article is dedicated to the problem of transposition of the Cervantes’s Code in the cinematographic adaptation of the novel Don Quixote by Orson Welles (1957-1992). The study focuses on identifying and revealing the aesthetic and ideological kinship of the film adaptation of the American director with the work of the Spanish writer, as well as on the analysis of methods and mechanisms of actualization of the main thematic, problematic, structural and narrative aspects of the novel of Cervantes at various levels of the Welles’s cinematic poetics. Welles retains the "intellectual" skepticism of Cervantes, but demostrates a greater affinity with the romantic tradition of reading this text, which at his time dominated the cinematic and scientific-critical discourse. The actualization of the anachronism of Don Quixote as one of the key thematic codes of Cervantes's novel is carried out by transferring the action of the novel to the Francoist Spain. The structure of the film reproduces the plot mostly on the basis of the first volume. Working in the "manner of Cervantes", the author of the cinematic adaptation uses a wide range of ludic, metatextual and metanarrative techniques that reveal the "auto-reflexivity" of his text. In addition, Welles' adaptation of Don Quixote transposes the linguistic and stylistic codes of the Spanish author's novel by using the cinematic montage techniques, oblique angle shots, and stylized mise-en-scène (in-depth). Those features, in turn, demonstrate the inherent kinship with the baroque style of the second volume. Welles stresses the ambivalence inherent in Cervantes's text: he criticizes modernity, but uses its achievements (especially the cinema) to implement his own utopian cultural program of the new knight of cinema. Welles's film chosen as the object of our study essentially and aesthetically remains "faithful" to the original and at the same time contributes to a deeper understanding of the Cervantes’s code in the modern media space and culture in particular. The film reveals the ability of Cervantes's code to adapt to modern communication technologies and changes in life (cinema, advertising, tourism) that not only present Don Quixote and Sancho Panza as anachronisms, but also ensure their immortality, proving the validity of Welles's idea who states that they are heroes for all ages.
Suicidal Thoughts in the Novel Don Quixote

Abstract:Background: During the last century suicide has been medicalised. This restrictive view has been challenged, and the wisdom of experts from beyond medicine is being valued. Fictional literature is a source of information regarding the human experience. Objective: To extend our understanding of suicide and suicidal thinking by examining the early-17th Century Spanish novel, "Don Quixote". Method: Various translations were examined for accounts of suicide, suicidal thinking, and associated behaviour. Results: There were no accounts of completed suicide. There was one statement indicating the belief that suicide could be triggered by mental disorder. There were five statements indicating that suicidal thinking could arise in situations of distress. Such distress arose from the actual/potential loss of a loved person, suffering by another person, and relentless sleep deprivation. There is one account of a person pretending to attempt suicide and achieving a self-inflicted wound, not with the intention to self-murder, but to impact the disposition of another person. Conclusion: The observation that in early-17th Century Spain suicide was acknowledged as means of dealing with distress is consistent with findings from other periods, and the present day. This strengthens the position that suicide can occur in the absence of mental disorder.
The Originals of the Original of Don Quixote: Translation and Pseudotranslation in the Spanish Libros de Caballerías

Abstract:Pseudotranslations and references to fictitious originals are a staple of chivalric literature before Don Quixote. In particular, 75 % of the Spanish libros de caballerías refer to some form of, mostly invented, source text. Despite its ubiquity, there are a range of different strategies in connection with what used to be considered a single motif. There are pseudotranslations from fanciful languages, and texts written by magic chroniclers, but also more or less realistic scenarios of translation from foreign tales or chronicles. Some examples are a consequence of the so-called editorial genre - paratextual conventions facilitated by printers and booksellers. Other cases consciously negotiate a textual status throughout the narrative that is less stable and less homogeneous than might be expected. This article briefly explores the different settings of the romances and points out several cases of ambiguous presentation, asking whether pseudotranslations should be treated differently from so-called authentic translations when considering early modern narrative.

Abstract:Don Quixote of La Mancha, the picturesque character created by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra in his immortal book The Ingenious Nobleman Sir Quixote of La Mancha, presents several neuropsychiatric conditions, including tremor, sleep disturbances, neuropsychiatric symptoms, syncope, perception disorders and traumatic brain injury. Throughout the masterpiece, there are episodes where the aforementioned disorders are evident. This paper makes a list of them and analyses them in the light of the current knowledge of those conditions.

Abstract:Many types of non-professional, non-credentialed relationships are seen by laypersons as analogous to those occuring in psychotherapy. This paper takes a leap backwards several centuries and describes two examples of one such type of interaction as portrayed in artistic masterpieces. In Miguel de Cervantes' novel, "Don Quixote," an elderly, depressed man pursues a restitutive and grandiose delusion of being a heroic knight errant. In Ingmar Bergman's film, "The Seventh Seal," a disillusioned knight returns from the Crusades to face the lethal bubonic plague, and he uses obsessional means in an attempt to outwit death. Both men are accompanied by squires who try, with varying degrees of success, to help their masters relinquish their infantile needs for omniscience and omnipotence, accept their human limitations, and deal more appropriately with their surrounding realities. The powerful and inspiring insights of both works have much to teach contemporary therapists whose patients wear more metaphorical suits of armor.

Abstract:Abstract What kinds of collectivities might come into being in literature in an age of diverse global readership? This question, pressing for twenty-first-century reevaluations of comparative literature, is not new to Latin American literature and its criticism. This article takes Manuel Puig’s 1980 novel Maldición eterna a quien lea estas páginas as an example of a text that engages in debates of its moment, including reader-response theory and Latin American testimonio, while also looking over their horizons to anticipate the ways the collective “we” of literary studies would be thrown into question in the decades to come. Though the novel, which was written during Puig’s exile in New York and anticipates a metropolitan readership, condemns its reader from the outset to read badly (incompetently, extractively, parasitically), it also suggests that there is ethical value in staying with the textual encounter in which meaning, power, and relation are negotiated. Miscommunication, distortion, and projection may be inevitable when continuity in culture, language, and life experience cannot be assumed between writer, characters, and readers, but Puig’s novel affirms that the creative collaboration (however conflictive) that takes place in the act of reading is what gives rise to new ways of saying “we.”

Abstract:This article examines two of Nikos Kazantzakis’ unshot screenplays of the early 1930s: his adaptations of Cervantes’ Don Quixote and Boccaccio’s Decameron, kept in typed manuscripts at the Nikos Kazantzakis Museum Foundation in Iraklion, Crete. The article analyses Kazantzakis’ Don Quixote and Decameron in the contexts of early talking cinema and his ideas of the image-language relationship. Written at a time when the artistic value of talking cinema was still debated, Kazantzakis’ adaptations demonstrate that he sought to express ideas with images rather than dialogue (Don Quixote) and use sound as a creative element (Decameron) in ways alluding to Eisenstein’s 1928-1929 writings, with which, as evidence suggests, the Greek author was familiar. Thus, Kazantzakis’ Don Quixote and Decameron show how a technological development in film history – the coming of sound – and the Soviet film theory influenced this author’s adaptation techniques, while also enhancing our understanding of his creative career as well as the worldwide resonance of Cervantes’ and Boccaccio’s literary milestones.
