Abstract:We focus on providing the first comprehensive national dataset on the incidence, injury aetiology and mortality of TSCI in China. A multi-stage stratified cluster sampling method was used. We included TSCI cases from all hospitals in three regions, nine provinces and 27 cities in China via search of electronic medical records and retrospectively analysed the characteristics of TSCI in China from 2009 to 2018. We estimated the incidence of TSCI in the total population and subgroups. There were 5954 actual cases in 2009, corresponding to a total estimated TSCI incidence of 45.1 cases per million population (95% CI, 44.0–46.3). There were 10,074 actual cases in 2018, corresponding to a total estimated TSCI incidence of 66.5 cases per million population (95% CI, 65.2–67.8) (P < 0.001; annual average percentage change (AAPC), 4.4%). From 2009 to 2018, the incidence of almost all sex/age groups showed an increasing trend over time (P < 0.001; AAPC, 0.7–8.8%). The elderly population (aged 65–74) displayed the highest incidence of TSCI (with an average annual incidence of 127.1 cases per million [95% CI, 119.8–134.3]). The TSCI incidence increased significantly from 2009 to 2018. The incidence in the elderly populations was consistently high and continues to increase over time. The mortality of TSCI patients in hospitals is relatively low and continues to decrease each year, but elderly individuals remain at a high risk of hospital death.

Abstract:Background: Traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) is a highly fatal and disabling event, and its incidence rate is increasing in China. Therefore, we collated the epidemiological factors of TSCI in different regions of China to update the earlier systematic review published in 2018. Method: We searched four English and three Chinese electronic databases from 1978 to October 1, 2022. From the included reports, information on sample characteristics, incidence, injury characteristics, prognostic factors, and economic burden was extracted. The selection of data was based on the PRISMA statement. The quality of the included studies was assessed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) tool. The results of the meta-analysis were presented in the form of pooled frequency and forest plots. Results: A total of 59 reports (60 studies) from 23 provinces were included, of which 41 were in the Chinese language. The random pooled incidence of TSCI in China was estimated to be 65.15 per million (95% CI: 47.20–83.10 per million), with a range of 6.7 to 569.7 per million. The pooled male-to-female ratio was 1.95:1. The pooled mean age of the cases at the time of injury was 45.4 years. Motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) and high falls were found to be the leading causes of TSCI. Incomplete quadriplegia and AISA/Frankel grade D were the most common types of TSCI. Cervical level injury was the most prevalent. The pooled in-hospital mortality and complication rates for TSCI in China were 3% (95% CI: 2–4%) and 35% (95% CI: 23–47%). Respiratory problems were the most common complication and the leading cause of death. Conclusion: Compared with previous studies, the epidemiological data on TSCI in China has changed significantly. A need to update the data over time is essential to implement appropriate preventive measures and formulate interventions according to the characteristics of the Chinese population.

Abstract:Abstract Background While the cities in China in which spinal cord injury (SCI) studies have been conducted previously are at the forefront of medical care, northwest China is relatively underdeveloped economically, and the epidemiological characteristics of SCI have rarely been reported in this region. Methods The SCI epidemiological survey software developed was used to analyze the data of patients treated with SCI from 2014 to 2018. The sociodemographic characteristics of patients, including name, age, sex, and occupation, were recorded. The following medical record data, obtained from physical and radiographic examinations, were included in the study: data on the cause of injury, fracture location, associated injuries, and level of injury. Neurological function was evaluated using the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) impairment scale. In addition, the treatment and complications during hospitalization were documented. Results A total of 3487 patients with SCI with a mean age of 39.5 ± 11.2 years were identified in this study, and the male to female ratio was 2.57:1. The primary cause of SCI was falls (low falls 47.75%, high falls 37.31%), followed by traffic accidents (8.98%), and impact with falling objects (4.39%). Of all patients, 1786 patients (51.22%) had complications and other injuries. According to the ASIA impairment scale, the numbers of grade A, B, C, and D injuries were 747 (21.42%), 688 (19.73%), 618 (17.72%), and 1434 (41.12%), respectively. During the hospitalization period, a total of 1341 patients experienced complications, with a percentage of 38.46%. Among all complications, pulmonary infection was the most common (437, 32.59%), followed by hyponatremia (326, 24.31%), bedsores (219, 16.33%), urinary tract infection (168, 12.53%), deep venous thrombosis (157, 11.71%), and others (34, 2.53%). Notably, among 3487 patients with SCI, only 528 patients (15.14%) received long-term rehabilitation treatment. Conclusion The incidence of SCI in northwest China was on the rise with higher proportion in males; fall and the MCVs were the primary causes of SCI. The occupations most threatened by SCI are farmers and workers. The investigation and analysis of the epidemiological characteristics of SCI in respiratory complications are important factors leading to death after SCI, especially when the SCI occurs in the cervical spinal cord. Finally, the significance of SCI rehabilitation should be addressed.

Abstract:Spinal cord injuries are incredibly disabling and can have fatal consequences. At present, there is a lack of available information regarding the epidemiological characteristics of patients who have experienced spinal cord injury (SCI) in China. This retrospective hospital-based study was conducted in the Rehabilitation department of Wuhan's Tongji Hospital between 2016 and 2022. A total of 649 individuals diagnosed with SCI (both traumatic and non-traumatic) were admitted during this period. Data regarding various epidemiological features were gathered, including sex, age, etiology, occupation, neurological level of injury, the American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale at the time of admission, and information on any accompanying injuries. Out of the 649 cases of SCI, there were 539 cases of traumatic SCI and 110 cases of non-traumatic SCI. The mean age at the time of injury was 45.6 ± 14.8 years. The ratio of male to female patients was higher in traumatic SCI at 2.82:1compared to non-traumatic SCI at 1.68:1. Traffic accidents were the most common cause of TSCI, accounting for (n = 207/539; 38.40%) of cases. On the other hand, neoplasm was the most common cause of NTSCI, accounting for (n = 38/110; 34.54%) of cases. The findings indicated a higher proportion of males, with traffic accidents being the main cause of injury among TSCI patients. It is crucial to prioritize the risk of falling among older adults and allocate more attention to this issue. These results emphasize the need for tailored preventive strategies that consider the unique characteristics of different types of SCI patients.

Abstract:Background Injuries represent a significant and growing public health concern in China. This Review was conducted to document the characteristics of injured patients presenting to the emergency department of Chinese hospitals and to assess of the nature of information collected and reported in published surveillance studies. Methods A systematic search of MEDLINE and China Academic Journals supplemented with a hand search of journals was performed. Studies published in the period 1997 to 2007 were included and research published in Chinese was the focus. Search terms included emergency, injury, medical care. Results Of the 268 studies identified, 13 were injury surveillance studies set in the emergency department. Nine were collaborative studies of which eight were prospective studies. Of the five single centre studies only one was of a prospective design. Transport, falls and industrial injuries were common mechanisms of injury. Study strengths were large patient sample sizes and for the collaborative studies a large number of participating hospitals. There was however limited use of internationally recognised injury classification and severity coding indices. Conclusion Despite the limited number of studies identified, the scope of each highlights the willingness and the capacity to conduct surveillance studies in the emergency department. This Review highlights the need for the adoption of standardized injury coding indices in the collection and reporting of patient health data. While high level injury surveillance systems focus on population-based priority setting, this Review demonstrates the need to establish an internationally comparable trauma registry that would permit monitoring of the trauma system and would by extension facilitate the optimal care of the injured patient through the development of informed quality assurance programs and the implementation of evidence-based health policy.

Abstract:Study Design. Descriptive epidemiological study. Objective. To determine the epidemiological characteristics of spinal trauma in Mainland China. Summary of Background Data. To date, a large-scale epidemiological analysis of spinal trauma in Mainland China has not been undertaken. Methods. Data were acquired from Chinese Database of Traumas. Patients with International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) coding of 805.x and 806.x (spinal column fracture with and without spinal cord injury) from 2001 to 2007 were identified. Variables assessed included patient demographics, etiology, segmental distribution, and outcomes. Results. A total of 82,720 patients with spinal trauma were identified, accounting for 4.58% of all trauma patients in the study period. Spinal cord injuries (SCIs) and fracture-dislocations accounted for 16.87% and 7.17% of spinal trauma and 0.74% and 0.32% of all traumas in the same period, respectively. The male-to-female ratio was 2.33:1. About 79.32% of spinal trauma occurred in patients between 20 and 60 years of age. There was an annual increase in incidence during the study period. A total of 64,630 patients (78.13%) had a definitive cause, with motor vehicle accidents identified as the leading etiological factor (33.61%), followed by high falls (31.25%) and trivial falls (23.23%). Lumbar spine was most frequently involved (56.09%), followed by thoracic spine (23.77%), cervical spine (17.75%), and sacrococcygeal vertebrae (2.39%). Fracture-dislocation occurred most frequently in the cervical and lumbar spines, whereas spinal cord injury occurred most frequently in the cervical and thoracic spines. Children younger than 10 years of age were prone to cervical spine injury, whereas adults older than 60 years were more prone to osteoporotic thoracic and lumbar fractures. Overall rate of conservative treatment (55.88%) was higher than that of operative treatment (44.12%). Overall combined cure and improvement rates exceeded 90%. The male mortality rate was twice that of the female population. Lumbar spine injury was the most curable, whereas cervical spine injury was associated with the worst prognosis and the highest medical costs. Conclusion. This is the first large-scale epidemiological study of spinal injury in Mainland China. The results obtained have important implications for future public health care planning, public safety, and resource allocation.

Abstract:Objective To provide a broad epidemiological view of road traffic injury and death in China to help in policy and infrastructure development.Methods We searched MEDLINE and the China Academic Journal Full-Text Database (CAJ), and reviewed the annual reports of road traffic injuries, road traffic violations, and motor vehicle drivers in China from the website of Municipal Public Security (MPS) of the People's Republic of China.Results Road crash fatalities had been increasing rapidly in China, risky driving behavior and slow increase in road construction compared with the rapid increase in the number of cars might be the main factors in increasing morbidity and mortality in motor vehicle crashes.Conclusion Road traffic safety is a complicated and serious problem in China. Particular attention must be paid to road traffic events and conditions in rural areas, the most vulnerable road users.Government would establish a sound surveillance system using consistent definitions and improve EMS systems throughout China.

Abstract:Background: Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in severe, permanent functional changes and has become a global health priority due to its high incidence, cost, and disability rate. Current national epidemiological data on SCI in China are limited and outdated. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive, national cross-sectional investigation of SCI epidemiology in China. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 3055 SCI participants aged 8 to 78 years, conducted from May to September 2023. Data collected encompassed demographic characteristics, employment status, etiology, years lived with disability (YLD), family structure, caregiving status, income, health insurance, paralysis type, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Descriptive statistics analyses were used to assess demographic and injury characteristics. Group differences were assessed using t-tests, one-way ANOVA and Chi-square tests. Significant factors were examined using multivariate regression analysis. Results: The majority (88.9%) of respondents were aged 15 to 59 years, with a male-to-female ratio of 2.36:1. Car accidents caused 45.4% of tetraplegia cases, falls caused 35.9% of paraplegia cases, and myelitis was the leading cause of non-traumatic SCI. Among paraplegia participants, 65.5% had complete SCI, while 53.1% of tetraplegia participants had incomplete SCI. Functional improvement was reported by 9.58% of participants. Half (50.3%) of the respondents were unemployed, and 75% had incomes below the national average. HRQoL was significantly lower in the SCI population compared to controls, mainly influenced by injury site, income, age and etiology (p < 0.05). Conclusions: SCI participants in China exhibit low HRQoL and reemployment rates. Accessible community and vocational rehabilitation programs, alongside robust public medical services, are essential for enhancing reemployment and HRQoL among SCI participants, reducing the overall disease burden.

Abstract:EPIDEMIOLOGY OF SPINAL CORD INJURY IN GERMANY In Germany, specific data reflecting the health and care situation on spinal cord injuries (SCIs) are very limited. The results of research primarily relate to diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Routine data provided by the German Health Surveillance System do not give any information about new cases and their etiology. For that reason, neither the exact number of new cases per year nor the number of people affected by SCI in Germany is known. Furthermore, a nationwide registry like that in Australia or the United States, including all cases of SCI, does not exist. The extent of disability and rehabilitation needs in Germany is also unknown. AGerman working group is providing the first indications about the current situation. They have been collecting data from most SCI-specialized centers in Germany since 1976. From this database, we know that 34,000 new cases of SCI were registered between 1976 and 2002, corresponding to an annual incidence rate of approximately 1,200 to 1,500 cases per year. Most patients (70%) were male. The main identified causes of SCI were traffic accidents (31%) and disease (30%), eg, tumor of the spinal cord, certain types of disc herniation, or prenatal impairments like spina bifida. Thirteen percent of cases involved occupational accidents, and 7% involved swimming and sport accidents. Regarding the paralysis level, there were 37% tetraplegics and 63% paraplegics. Children were rarely affected (1%). Currently, Germany lists approximately 80,000 cases of a total of 81.1 million inhabitants. However, the significance of these figures is limited owing to the partial response of the specialized SCI centers in Germany. Recent data of the working group (1997–2010) indicate a strong increase in disease-related SCI and a slight decrease of accidental causes. Owing to an increase in age-related diseases in the population, an increase in disease-related SCI up to 50% is expected in the future. Moreover, an increasing percentage of women are expected owing to their higher life expectancy. The mean age of the entire population affected by SCI in 2010 was 60 years.

Abstract:STUDY DESIGN:A hospital-based retrospective epidemiological study.OBJECTIVE:To describe the demographic and epidemiological characteristics of patients with traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) in Xi'an to help health-related institutions formulate corresponding measures.SETTING:People with TSCI, all spine centres and orthopaedic centres in Xi'an, China.METHODS:We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of the all spine centers or orthopedic centers in Xi'an according to the International Classification of Disease Version 10 (ICD-10) and diagnostic code of TSCI. Variables included gender, age, medical insurance, etiology, occupation, level of injury, and severity of injury, multiple injury, complication, treatment, and so on.RESULTS:The study included the medical records of 1730 patients with TSCI from 2014 to 2018. The estimated annual incidence rate increased from 39.0 cases (95% CI, 34.7-43.3 cases) per 1 million persons in 2014 to 43.2 cases (95% CI, 39.0-47.5 cases) per 1 million persons in 2018. The leading cause of TSCI was high falls (35.5%, 614 cases). The most common injury site was the cervical spinal cord, accounting for 55.7% (963 cases). The degree of injury severity with the highest proportion was incomplete tetraplegia (47.2%, 816 cases). In addition, 71.4% (1236 cases) of TSCI cases had spinal fracture or dislocation.CONCLUSIONS:There are specific epidemiological characteristics of TSCI patients in Xi'an, and preventive measures are suggested to be based on the characteristics of the different types of patients with TSCI and focused on high-risk groups.

Abstract:STUDY DESIGN:A hospital-based retrospective epidemiological study.OBJECTIVE:The aim of this study was to examine the demographic and epidemiological characteristics of patients with traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) in Guangdong to help health-related institutions develop measures to determine the best allocation of medical resources.SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA:TSCI is a highly disabling and deadly injury. Currently, there is little information regarding the epidemiological characteristics for TSCI in Guangdong.METHODS:We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of partial second-grade class-A hospitals (mainly capturing general city and county hospitals and some large-scale affiliated hospitals) in Guangdong province according to the International Classification of Disease Version 10 (ICD-10) and diagnostic code of TSCI.RESULTS:The study included the medical records of 1340 patients with TSCI, and the annual number of TSCI admissions increased during the 2003 to 2011 period. The male-to-female ratio was approximately 3.5:1. The major causes of spinal cord injuries were high falls (41.0%) and traffic accidents (37.8%). The most common injury among patients with TSCI was cervical injury (818 cases). In addition, 62.9% of the patients had spinal fractures, 24.0% had other fractures, and 13.7% had brain injuries. Furthermore, 25.1% (337/1340) of the patients experienced clinical complications. The differences in the number of patients with and without complete injury who accepted surgery and hyperbaric oxygen therapy were statistically significant (P < 0.05), and the difference in total medical cost was significant (P < 0.05).CONCLUSION:There are specific epidemiological characteristics of TSCI patients in Guangdong, and preventive measures are suggested to focus on high-risk populations, such as adult men.LEVEL OF EVIDENCE:3.

Abstract:Objective: To describe the epidemiological characteristics and trends of traumatic spinal cord injury in Chongqing, China.Study design: Hospital-based retrospective research.Setting: Xinqiao Hospital, Chongqing.Methods: We reviewed medical records of 554 patients with traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) admitted to Xinqiao Hospital from 2009 to 2013. Variables included gender, age, marital status, etiology, occupation, time of injury, level of injury, and severity of injury, the length of hospital stay, and treatment.Results: The mean age of patients with TSCI was 45.6 +/- 13.8 years, and the male/female ratio was 4.33: 1. 94.2% (522 patients) of all patients with TSCI were married. Falls, comprising low falls and high falls (10.8% and 50.9%, respectively), were the leading reason for a hospital visit. And the second reason was MVCs (21.8%). The most common injury site was the cervical spinal cord, accounting for nearly more than 54%. The length of hospital stay ranged between 1 and 219 days (mean: 28.3 days). The proportions of complete tetraplegia, incomplete tetraplegia, complete paraplegia and incomplete paraplegia were 17.1%, 37.8%, 22.2%, and 22.9%, respectively.Conclusion: The result revealed that the proportion of males was higher, as well as falls and MVCs were the first two main reasons, with older mean age of patients with TSCI than other countries. The occupations with highest risk for TSCI were peasants and laborers. All of these results prompted that preventive methods should be based on the characteristics of different type of patients with TSCI.

Abstract:Traumatic spinal cord injury is potentially catastrophic and can lead to permanent disability or even death. China has the largest population of patients with traumatic spinal cord injury. Previous studies of traumatic spinal cord injury in China have mostly been regional in scope; national-level studies have been rare. To the best of our knowledge, no national-level study of treatment status and economic burden has been performed. This retrospective study aimed to examine the epidemiological and clinical features, treatment status, and economic burden of traumatic spinal cord injury in China at the national level. We included 13,465 traumatic spinal cord injury patients who were injured between January 2013 and December 2018 and treated in 30 hospitals in 11 provinces/municipalities representing all geographical divisions of China. Patient epidemiological and clinical features, treatment status, and total and daily costs were recorded. Trends in the percentage of traumatic spinal cord injuries among all hospitalized patients and among patients hospitalized in the orthopedic department and cost of care were assessed by annual percentage change using the Joinpoint Regression Program. The percentage of traumatic spinal cord injuries among all hospitalized patients and among patients hospitalized in the orthopedic department did not significantly change overall (annual percentage change, -0.5% and 2.1%, respectively). A total of 10,053 (74.7%) patients underwent surgery. Only 2.8% of patients who underwent surgery did so within 24 hours of injury. A total of 2005 (14.9%) patients were treated with high-dose (≥ 500 mg) methylprednisolone sodium succinate/methylprednisolone (MPSS/MP); 615 (4.6%) received it within 8 hours. The total cost for acute traumatic spinal cord injury decreased over the study period (-4.7%), while daily cost did not significantly change (1.0% increase). Our findings indicate that public health initiatives should aim at improving hospitals' ability to complete early surgery within 24 hours, which is associated with improved sensorimotor recovery, increasing the awareness rate of clinical guidelines related to high-dose MPSS/MP to reduce the use of the treatment with insufficient evidence.
Incidence, prevalence, and causes of spinal injuries in China, 1990–2019: Findings from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Abstract:Background: Spinal injuries are an urgent public health priority; nevertheless, no China-wide studies of these injuries exist. This study measured the incidence, prevalence, causes, regional distribution, and annual trends of spinal injuries in China from 1990 to 2019. Methods: We used data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019 to estimate the incidence and prevalence of spinal injuries in China. The data of 33 provincial-level administrative regions (excluding Taiwan, China) provided by the National Center for Chronic and Noncommunicable Disease Control and Prevention, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) were use to systematically analyze the provincial etiology, geographical distribution, and annual trends of spinal injuries. The Bayesian meta-regression tool DisMod-MR 2.1 was used to ensure the consistency among incidence, prevalence, and mortality rates in each case. Results: From 1990 to 2019, the number of living patients with spinal injuries in China increased by 138.32%, from 2.14 million to 5.10 million, while the corresponding age-standardized prevalence increased from 0.20% (95% uncertainty interval [UI]: 0.18–0.21%) to 0.27% (95% UI: 0.26–0.29%). The incidence of spinal injuries in China increased by 89.91% (95% UI: 72.39–107.66%), and the prevalence increased by 98.20% (95% UI: 89.56–106.82%), both the most significant increases among the G20 countries; 71.00% of the increase could be explained by age-specific prevalence. In 2019, the incidence was 16.47 (95% UI: 12.08–22.00, per 100,000 population), and the prevalence was 358.30 (95% UI: 333.96–386.62, per 100,000 population). Based on the data of 33 provincial-level administrative regions provided by CDC, age-standardized incidence and prevalence were both highest in developed provinces in Eastern China. The primary causes were falls and road injuries; however, the prevalence and specific causes differed across provinces. Conclusions: In China, the overall disease burden of spinal injuries increased significantly during the past three decades but varied considerably according to geographical location. Abstract:Objectives: The aim of this study was to conduct a bibliometric analysis of the literature on stem cell treatment for spinal cord injury to gain an intuitive understanding of how the field is progressing, discover topics of interest, and determine what development trends are emerging in this field. Background: Spinal cord injury and its complications often cause an enormous economic burden, and postinjury repair and treatment have always been challenging in clinical and scientific research. Stem cell therapy for spinal cord injury can prevent immune rejection and induce the release of neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory factors to reduce the production of stress-related proteins, reactive oxygen species, and inflammatory reactions. Methods: We analyzed the number and quality of publications in the field of stem cell therapy in spinal cord injury between 2018.01.01 and 2023.06.30 in the core collection database of Web of Science. CiteSpace and VOSviewer were used to sort and summarize these studies by country, institution, authors' publications, and collaborative networks. In addition, the research topics of interest were identified and summarized. Results: This study ultimately included 2,150 valid papers, with the number of publications showing a gradual upward trend. The country, institution, author and journal with the greatest number of publications and citations are China, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dai JW, and the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, respectively. The top three high-frequency keyword clusters were hereditary paraplegia, reactive astrocytes and tissue engineering. Conclusion: With the help of visual analysis, we identified general trends and research topics of interest in the field of spinal cord injury over the last 5 years. Our findings suggest that stem cell transplantation for spinal cord injury and exosome therapy may be a focus of future research. This study provides a foundation for future research on stem cell therapy as well as clinical efforts in this field.

Abstract:Study Design. A hospital-based retrospective epidemiological study. Summary of Background Data. TSCI is a highly disabling and deadly injury. Currently, there is little information regarding the epidemiological characteristics for TSCI in Shaanxi. Objective: To describe the demographic and epidemiological characteristics of patients with traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) in Shaanxi to help health-related institutions formulate corresponding measures. Methods. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of the spine centers or orthopedic centers of the four cities in Shaanxi province according to the International Classification of Disease Version 10 (ICD-10) and diagnostic code of TSCI. Variables included gender, age, medical insurance, etiology, occupation, time of injury, level of injury, and severity of injury, multiple injury, treatment, and so on. Results: The study included the medical records of 694 patients with TSCI in 2018. The mean age of patients with TSCI was 48.4±14.9 years, and the male/female ratio was 3.45:1. The major causes of TSCI were high falls (40.2%) and low falls (26.7%). The most common injury site was the cervical spinal cord, accounting for 48.7%. The highest proportion of severity of injury was ASIA Grade D (37.8%). In addition, 74.6% of the patients had spinal fractures, the chest (38.0%) accounted for the highest proportion of all TSCI patients. Furthermore, 27.8% of the patients experienced clinical complications. 530 (76.4%) patients underwent surgery, 323 (46.5%) patients underwent inpatient rehabilitation. Conclusion: There are specific epidemiological characteristics of TSCI patients in Shaanxi, and preventive measures are suggested to be based on the characteristics of the different types of patients with TSCI and focused on high-risk groups.

Abstract:Introduction: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a severe disease of the central nervous system with a very high disability rate that seriously affects the daily life of patients. Acupuncture is one of the rehabilitation therapies that has shown significant efficacy in treating post-SCI complications such as motor disorders, neuropathic pain, and neurogenic bladder. Current studies have focused on the effectiveness and mechanisms of acupuncture for SCI, but no studies are available to analyze the bibliometrics of publications related to this area. Methods: Publications related to acupuncture for SCI were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection for quantitative and qualitative analyses. The quantitative analysis was unfolded in the following six main areas: annual publications, countries, institutions, authors, sources, and keywords. The qualitative analysis section screened out publications with high annual citation rates and categorized them according to the study content. Results: There were 213 relevant publications, more than half of which were journal articles. The number of publications showed a fluctuating upward trend. China and the United States were hub countries for related publications and had extensive cooperation with other countries. The most relevant author was Yuanshan Zeng from Sun Yat-sen University, China. The efficacy and mechanism of acupuncture for neuropathic pain after SCI was the first research hotspot in this field, and electroacupuncture was the most widely used technique. In the past 5 years, the mechanism of acupuncture to improve the local microenvironment of SCI and promote nerve regeneration had become a new research trend. At the same time, acupuncture had been gradually applied to various complications after SCI and in veterinary medicine. Conclusion: The findings suggest that research on acupuncture for SCI is still flourishing, and more research on electroacupuncture for promoting nerve repair and regeneration after SCI will be available in the future.
