Abstract:This article is an inductive argumentation and an empirical-analytical paradigm that evaluates the actual relationship between Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita and the Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in country groups of the G8 considered as developed in a period of time from 1960 to 2011. It was developed an Augmented Dickey-Fuller unit root (ADF), a Granger Causality Test and a Johansen Cointegration test. The results evidence the non-stationary of constrains in both countries. It was obtained a VAR model with two variables with a number of lags of four - VAR2 (4) to which were tested for causality by demonstrating a unidirectionality of GDP per capita to CO2. Abstract:The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between income and Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions in the context of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC), which posits the existence of an inverted U-shape relationship between environmental degradation and economic development. For this purpose, two empirical models are examined. For both models, the relationship between per capita income and per capita CO2 emissions and the relationship among per capita income, per capita energy use, and per capita CO2 emissions are analyzed respectively between 1980 and 2010, using the panel data estimation techniques with the application of Driscoll-Kraay Standard Errors. Yet, for the first model, data are analyzed for 26 OECD countries with high income levels, while for the second model, data are examined for 52 emerging countries. The results of both models show that N-shape and an inverted N-shape relationship for cubic functional form are observed. Thus, the results do not support the EKC hypothesis, which implies that environmental degradation cannot be solved automatically by economic growth.

Abstract:Since developing countries experience economic and environmental sustainability challenges, it is desirable digging into the linkages between economic and environmental parameters. The purpose of this work is to evaluate the existence of the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) theory (i.e., the inverse U-shape connection between real GDP per capita and per capita carbon dioxide emissions) in the sample of 11 developing countries. By using balanced annual panel data in the period between 1992 and 2014 and two alternative estimation techniques, we explored the potential inverted U-shaped linkage between carbon dioxide emissions and real GDP per capita in the sample of interest. For analysis purposes, Pedroni and Westerlund co-integration techniques are employed. Then, fully modified ordinary least squares, pooled mean group methods are applied for long-run parameter estimations. And, the Dumitrescu-Hurlin causality approach is employed for causal directions. Firstly, this work's findings provide the supportive evidence to the inverse U-shaped linkage in the long-run, indicating that an increase in real GDP per capita and electricity consumption tends to mitigate long-run carbon dioxide emissions in the developing countries, for the whole sample. Secondly, the country-specific findings suggested the presence of EKC theory for Brazil, China, India, Malaysia, the Russian Federation, Thailand, and Turkey. It implicated that these countries are on the path of attaining environmental sustainability in the long-run. However, Mexico, Philippines, Indonesia, and South Africa failed to lend credence to the EKC theory. It manifested that these countries need to design strategies directed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from economic activity and electricity generation through efficiency improvement or promotion of renewables. Finally, bidirectional causal links are observed among all the variables of interest. The findings suggest that country-specific targeted action plans should be implemented to ensure the environmental sustainability in the developing world.

Abstract:Sustainability is to attain a better quality of life for a long period of time. Accomplishment of sustainable environment is a major challenge for all economies of the world. The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis elucidates the association between economic activity and environmental quality deterioration. Therefore, the broad aim of this study is to explore the validity of the EKC hypothesis using real gross domestic product and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions along with other variables, for 182 countries based on annual time series data. The countries are categorized into four income groups (low, lower-middle, upper-middle, and higher-income countries) according to the World Bank classification. The fully modified ordinary least squares estimator is used for estimation. The empirical results confirm the presence of an EKC (inverted U-shaped relationship) in 11 low-income, 15 lower-middle-income, 34 upper-middle-income, and 24 high-income countries out of 182 countries, while in the remaining countries, the relationship between growth and CO 2 emissions is U-shaped. Additionally, the positive impact of energy use and population growth on CO 2 emissions is consistent with the hypothesis. Therefore, this study concludes that the EKC hypothesis holds true in 84 countries. These findings suggest that governments should prioritize low carbon emissions and green technology to achieve sustainable development.

Abstract:The concept of environmental sustainability aims to achieve economic development while achieving a sustainable environment. The inverted U-shape relationship between economic growth and environmental quality, also called Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC), describes the correlation between economic growth and carbon emissions. This study assesses the role of agriculture and energy-related variables while evaluating the EKC threshold in 54 African economies, and income groups, according to World Bank categorization, including low income, lower-middle, upper-middle, and high-income in Africa. With 1990–2015 panel data, the results are estimated using panel cointegration, Fully Modified Ordinary Least Square (FMOLS), and granger causality tests. The results are: (1) The study validated the EKC hypothesis in the low-income, lower-, and upper-middle-income economies. However, there is no evidence of EKC in the full African and high-income panels. Furthermore, the turning points of EKC in the income group are meagerly low, showing that Africa could be turning on EKC at lower income levels. (2) The correlation between agriculture with CO2 is found positive in the high-income economy. However, agriculture has a mitigation effect on emissions in the lower-middle-income and low-income economies, and the full sample. Also, renewable energy is negatively correlated with emissions in Africa and the high-income economy. In contrast, non-renewable energy exerts a positive effect on emissions in all income groups except the low-income economies.

Abstract:Environmental changes based on factors like urbanization, population, economic growth, increase in energy consumption, and agricultural intensification are never far from the top of any agenda. The topics of environmental degradation and climate change cannot be confined to a single country or region but need to be addressed on a global scale. If the focus is on the relationship between environmental degradation and economic growth, then one hypothesis that is comprehensively used as an empirically model is the widely known Environmental Kuznets Curve. A substantial amount of research has been published about the Environmental Kuznets Curve, and this present study provides a detailed and extensive literature review of more than 200 articles from 1998 to 2022 to explain and assess its evolution. This literature review provides in detail the Environmental Kuznets Curve relationship under analysis, the additional variables included, the type of analysis and methods performed, the relationships obtained, and if the turning point is calculated. Furthermore, this comprehensive literature points out critical issues and gaps in the Environmental Kuznets Curve analysis. It is important to note that there are components that are not considered in the Environmental Kuznets Curve analysis. The Environmental Kuznets Curve only focuses on production and overlooks the impact of the consumption of imported goods on the environment. Consequently, environmental improvements from technological progress will be offset, and economic growth will result in more environmental degradation. This goes against the change in consumer behaviour which occurs with a rise in income, which is one basic assumption of the Environmental Kuznets Curve. The relocation of pollutant industries and consequent relocation of emissions could distort the emissions trajectory over the economic growth path and is also not considered in the Environmental Kuznets Curve analysis. On the other hand, the growth path traced by the inverted U-shaped is not efficient, and the environmental damage provoked in the first phases of the EKC might not be repairable. Therefore, technological progress, climate finance, and energy transition could improve the Environmental Kuznets Curve assessment.

Abstract:The environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis posits an inverted U-shaped relationship between economic growth and environmental degradation. However, there is no consensus regarding the EKC hypothesis among countries and regions of different income groups. This study revisits the EKC hypothesis by employing cross-correlation analysis to explore the income–CO2 emissions relationship across 158 countries and 44 regions from 1990 to 2020. The empirical method utilizes a dynamic cross-correlation coefficient (CCC) approach, allowing for the assessment of lead-lag dynamics between income and CO2 emissions over time. By categorizing nations into the World Bank's income classifications, we found a heterogeneous EKC pattern highlighting distinct environmental–economic dynamics across different income groups. The findings indicate that high-income countries show a decoupling of economic growth from CO2 emissions; whereas, low-income countries still exhibit a positive correlation between both variables. This underscores the necessity for tailored policy interventions that promote carbon neutrality, while considering each country's unique development stage. Our research contributes to the ongoing issue of sustainable economic development by providing empirical evidence of the different pathways nations follow in balancing growth with environmental preservation.

Environmental Kuznets Curve & Effectiveness of International Policies: Evidence from Cross Country Carbon Emission Analysis

Abstract:In this article, we are presenting the relationship between environmental pollution and the income level of the selected twenty-four countries. We implemented a data-based research analysis where, for each country, we analyzed the related data for fifty-six years, from 1960 to 2016, to assess the relationship between the carbon emission and income level. After performing the related data analysis for each country, we concluded whether the results for that country were in line with the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis. The EKC hypothesis suggests that the carbon emission per capita starts a declining trend when the country-specific high level of income is reached. The results of our data analyses show that the EKC hypothesis is valid for high-income countries and the declining trends of carbon emission are clearly observed when the income level reaches a specific high enough level. On the other hand, for the non-high income countries, our analysis results show that it is too early to make an assessment at this growth stage of their economies because they have not reached their related high-enough income per capita levels yet. Furthermore, we performed two more additional analyses on high-income countries. First, we analyzed the related starting years of their carbon emission declining trends. The big variance in the starting years of the carbon emission declining trends shows that the international policies are clearly ineffective in initiating the declining trend in carbon emission. In addition, for the high-income countries, we explained the differences in their carbon emission per capita levels in 2014 with their SGI indices and their dependence on high-carbon emission energy production.

Abstract:Abstract Several recent studies have identified inverted-U relationships between pollution and economic development. We investigate this question using a cross-national panel of data on emissions of four important air pollutants: suspended particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, and carbon monoxide. We find that per capita emissions of all four pollutants exhibit inverted-U relationships with per capita GDP. While this suggests that emissions will decrease in the very long run, we forecast continued rapid growth in global emissions over the next several decades.

Abstract:This study evaluates the nexus mechanism between foreign direct investment (FDI), economic growth (EG), renewable energy (REC), natural resources (NR), economic freedom (EF), and carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) in transition economies from 1998 to 2019. This research employed cross-sectional autoregressive distributed lag (CS-ARDL) and panel quantile regression (PQR) to assess the heterogeneity of the distributions. The estimates show a U-shaped nonlinear relationship between environmental pollution and economic growth, suggesting that the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis does not hold for transition countries. Foreign direct in-vestment was found to have a positive association with carbonization, signifying the presence of the pollution haven hypothesis in transition economies. Further, a negative relationship was established between economic growth and carbon emissions at lower growth rates, which transpires to be positive when the pace of growth crosses the threshold value. We also found that renewable energy and economic freedom have a significant role in promoting environmental sustainability, as these variables have adverse and significant effects on CO2 emissions. This finding suggests that increasing renewable energy consumption and intensifying the transition towards a market-based economy should be the main priorities in formulating sustainable development strate-gies. This research also provides the causal relationships between the selected variables and CO2 emissions and policy recommendations for green economic development.

Abstract:The purpose of this article is to explore the impact of urbanization on the coupling of economic growth and environmental quality. The traditional environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis explains the inverted U-shaped relationship between the economy and the environment. This study expands the traditional EKC theory by adding social indicator, which also corresponds to the three aspects (social, economic, and environmental) required for sustainable development in 2030. Based on the panel data of 134 countries from 1996 to 2015, the threshold regression model is applied to investigate the non-linear causality between the variables. The threshold variable is urbanization, and the impact mechanism of economic growth on carbon dioxide emissions and ecological footprint is tested. The results show that: urbanization strengthens the positive correlation between the economy and carbon emissions and ecological footprint. The positive effect of economic growth on the ecological footprint is greater than that of carbon emissions. Trade openness and natural resource rents increase environmental pressure. Population aging and renewable energy improve the quality of the environment. There is heterogeneity in the values and change trend of the regression coefficients of different income groups. Unlike the coefficient growth trend in the results of all countries, the following situations occur. As urbanization successively crosses the threshold, the positive effect of economic growth on carbon dioxide emissions in high income countries diminishes. The coefficient of the lower middle income group has an inverted U-shape. When the ecological footprint is the explained variable, the coefficient of the high income group becomes U-shaped.

Abstract:Threats posed by global climate change have heightened the urgency for economies to transition to sustainability. However, quantitative metrics that measure sustainability status remain under development, hampered in part by the difficulty of identifying clear relationships between economic growth and sustainability. The Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis provides a framework for describing sustainability status relative to socioeconomic development. In this study, the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis was adopted to investigate statistical relationships between the carbon intensity of human well-being (as an indicator of sustainability) and economic development in eight economic zones of China during 1997–2015. The results provide new evidence that seven of eight Chinese economic zones began advances to sustainability (defined here as downward turning points marked by inverted “N” shapes in the Environmental Kuznets Curve) between 2012 and 2015. The lone exception was the Northwestern economic zone, in which an approach to sustainability had not yet occurred by 2015. This study thus supports the contention that environmental policies and technologies have contributed to improving sustainability in terms of carbon intensity. The results suggest two strategic options for further increasing sustainability in China: 1) “first help the weakest”; and 2) “first help the latest to sustainability”.

Abstract:This research aims to examine the validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis in 37 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries over the period from 1960 to 2019. Panel Quantile Regressions (QR) show that for the lower quartile, economic growth does not impact emissions; for the central quartile a U-shaped curve emerges; while for the upper quartile, an N-shaped curve is found. In addition, cointegrating regressions highlight that economic growth, fossil fuel consumption, and population exert a detrimental effect on the environment, while renewable energy consumption reduces carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions. These results are confirmed by panel causality tests since a feedback mechanism is found between CO 2 emissions and the remaining series. Furthermore, single-country estimates provide evidence of great variability in the sample.

Abstract:Abstract Considering the increase in polluting emissions, the importance of determining the relationship between economic development and environmental quality is a crucial issue in achieving sustainable development goals. This study explores and empirically tests the validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis in a panel data of 39 countries is assembled over the period 1993–2018. For this purpose, the Human Development Index is used as a measure of development, contrary to classical studies in which GDP growth was determined as an indicator of economic growth. Also using by two different measures of pollutant emissions, such as methane ( $${{\text{CH}}}_{4}$$ CH 4 ) and carbon ( $${{\text{CO}}}_{2}$$ CO 2 ) emissions, examining to the validity of the EKC hypothesis. The analysis method consists of the fixed effect and robustness estimation of the panel data model, and employed the U -test approach in the study. Empirical findings in this study show that strong evidence to support an inverted U-shaped relationship between CO 2 emissions and human development, although the U -test results point at mixed results for CH 4 emissions. In addition, it is detected that negative relationship between environmental related technological innovation and pollutants emission such as $${{\text{CH}}}_{4}$$ CH 4 and $${{\text{CO}}}_{2}$$ CO 2 , which highlights the importance of promoting innovative technologies in struggle global warming.

Investigating the energy-environmental Kuznets curve under panel quantile regression: a global perspective

Abstract:Energy is regarded as an engine of economic growth and an important ingredient of human survival and development, but it can lead to deterioration of environmental quality. The study investigates the energy environmental Kuznets curve (EEKC) during the 1990-2017 period for 144 countries using models for total energy, renewable energy, and non-renewable energy consumptions. We employ panel mean and quantile regressions, accounting for individual and distributional heterogeneities. It is found that the EEKC sustains among the higher middle-income countries while it cannot be verified at some lower-income quantiles due to the heterogeneous nature of the different groups of countries. The relationship between economic growth, total energy, and non-renewable energy consumption is positive and non-linear. The quantile estimations revealed mixed (positive and non-linear, inverted U-shape, U-shape, and N-shape) EEKC. The maximum and minimum turning values of GDP per capita for total energy consumption (is 43,201.58 and 89,630.49), for renewable energy consumption (53,535.07 and 89,869.41), and for non-renewable energy consumption (42,188.16 and 89,487.71). Urbanization and population growth had positive impacts on energy consumption while these effects become more significant as moving from low to high-income quantiles. The study implies that while the developed nations can adopt energy-efficient policies without compromising on the growth momentum and environment, this might be not recommended for the developing nations and it would be preferable for these countries to "grow first and clean up later." The study indicates the importance of the developed nations to support the developing countries to achieve economic growth along the EEKC by transferring energy-efficient technologies.

Abstract:This article assesses the path of environmental degradation under the environmental Kuznets curve framework in Nordic European countries using data spanning the period 2005–2019 and employing the ordinary least squares techniques. The findings reveal evidence of a U-shaped structure; meaning, economic growth during the study period under the Norden "Green Deal and Action Plans" impulse remains on a pathway in which environmental quality is not yet improved. Further, there is no leveraging effect that changes the U-shaped structure into and inverted U-shaped. However, Nordic countries are characterized by the existence of the Pollution Halo Effect. Indeed, foreign direct investment inflows lead to increase use of advanced technologies and improved management practices. These results are robust to the use of different techniques such as alternative dependent variables, addition of control variables in response of the likely attrition bias, test of non-belonging to Eurozone features, and quantile analysis. As policy implications, Nordic European countries should amplify environmental management practices and policies to achieve low carbon footprint production or consumption in their economies, as well as pursue on a long-term basis, initiatives for a Green Nordic label, and energy efficiency as settled in the Norden Environmental Action Plan.

Abstract:Environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis was first introduced in the early 1990s, and during the last three decades, many researchers have been interested in EKC hypothesis since it is creating hope for achieving environmental sustainability without reducing economic growth. On the other hand, there are many opponents of the EKC hypothesis and there is no agreement on the hypothesis’s validity. This study aims at contributing to the debate on the validity of the EKC hypothesis by analyzing the CO2 emissions of all the countries in the world that have carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per capita over 1 Mt and a population over 10 million. Instead of panel data analysis, we preferred to use a time-series analysis of individual countries with annual data for the 1970–2019 period and supported the econometric analysis with a graphical analysis. We used ordinary least squares as an estimation method. According to our results, the EKC hypothesis is not strong enough to be generalized for every economy or a group of economies. Although the EKC hypothesis is relevant for some high-income countries, there are a considerable number of rich and polluting economies that don’t support the EKC hypothesis. Since EKC hypothesis is not valid at a global scale, regardless of the level of income, all countries need to seek better ways of limiting CO2 emissions.

Abstract:We consider water abundance in an Environmental Kuznets Curve for water pollution with a large panel dataset covering relatively more countries and years than previous research. Our dataset includes 151 countries covering 19 years from 1992 to 2010. We divide countries into categories based on per capita income and water abundance. We find evidence for an EKC in approximately half the model specifications, but turning points are generally greater than the average income. Interestingly, interacting water abundance with income results in a negative relationship between income per capita and water pollution for the full sample. Different model specifications appear to imply this result is driven primarily by rich countries. Policies to improve water quality include stricter environmental regulations, particularly for poorer countries.
