Abstract:Abstract Ambient vibration measurements can detect resonance frequency changes related to rock slope instability damage or boundary condition changes during progressive failure. However, the impact of slope kinematics on resonance changes and the expected form and sensitivity of frequency evolution during destabilization require clarification to improve the implementation of this technique across diverse settings. Since instrumented rock slope failures are rare, numerical modeling is needed to study the anticipated spectral response from in situ monitoring. We used 2D distinct‐element modeling to evaluate the sensitivity and evolution of rock slope resonance behavior for slab toppling, flexural toppling, and planar sliding instabilities during progressive failure. Model simulations revealed that fundamental resonance frequency decreases between 20% and 60% with changes correlated with increasing length of open joints. Changes to higher‐order frequencies associated with landslide sub‐volumes were also detectable for cases with multiple fracture networks. Resonance behavior was most pronounced for failures dominated by steeply dipping open tension cracks, that is, flexural and slab toppling. Additionally, amplification patterns across the slope varied for the flexural toppling and sliding cases, providing potential new information with which to characterize landslide failure mechanisms using ambient vibration array measurements. Our results demonstrate landslide characteristics well‐suited for in situ ambient resonance monitoring and provide new data describing the anticipated changes in resonance frequencies during progressive rock slope failure.

Abstract:Seismic resonance and surface displacement measurements can be implemented in tandem to improve landslide characterization and progressive failure monitoring. Crack aperture data are frequently used in rock slope stability monitoring and often exhibit recognizable trends prior to failure, such as accelerated crack opening. Alternatively, ambient resonance data offer multiple parameters including modal frequencies, damping, and polarization that can be monitored alongside crack aperture and may respond differently to environmental forcings and complex failure evolution. We analyzed data from continuous ambient vibration monitoring and concomitant crack aperture measurements at the Courthouse Mesa instability, a large toppling sandstone slab in Utah, USA. Three years of data revealed crack aperture increases of 2–4 mm/year with no clearly detectable irreversible changes in modal parameters, including frequency. Annually, frequency and displacement varied by 29% and 19% of the mean, respectively, with average and maximum daily frequency fluctuations of 6.5% and 16%, respectively. These reversible cyclic changes were primarily temperature-driven, but annually, frequency was in-phase with temperature whereas crack aperture lagged temperature changes by ∼37 days. Polarization and damping also varied seasonally but were less strongly correlated with temperature. Conceptual 3D finite element modeling demonstrated consistent frequency decreases associated with crack propagation but variable changes in crack aperture measured at a single point; i.e., crack propagation did not always result in increased crack opening but always generated a resonance frequency decrease. Taken together, our data suggest a possible thermal wedging-ratcheting mechanism at the Courthouse Mesa instability, where annual thermoelastic crack closure is impeded by debris infill but the absence of downward crack propagation during the monitoring period is evidenced by no permanent resonance frequency changes. Our study demonstrates that combined seismic resonance and crack aperture data provide an improved description of rock slope instability behavior, supporting refined characterization and monitoring of changes accompanying progressive failure.

Abstract:Block toppling instability can be a common problem in natural rock masses, especially in mining environments where excavation activity may trigger discontinuity-controlled instability by modifying the natural slope geometry. Traditional investigations of block toppling failure consider classic kinematic analyses and simplified two-dimensional limit equilibrium methods. This approach is still the most commonly adopted, but the simple two-dimensional conceptual model may often oversimplify the instability mechanisms, ignoring potential critical factors specifically related to the three-dimensional geometry. This paper uses a three-dimensional distinct element method approach applied to an example case study, identifying the critical parameters that influence direct toppling instability in an open pit environment. Terrestrial laser scanning was used to obtain detailed three-dimensional geometrical information of the slope face geometry for subsequent stability analyses. A series of sensitivity analyses on critical parameters such as friction angle, discontinuity shear and normal stiffness, discontinuity spacing, and orientation was performed, using simple conceptual three-dimensional numerical modeling. Results of the analyses revealed the importance of undertaking three-dimensional analyses for direct toppling investigations that allow identification of critical parameters. A three-dimensional distinct element analysis was then performed using a more realistic complex volumetric mesh model of the case study slope which confirmed the previous modeling results but also identified unstable blocks in high slope angle areas, providing useful information for life of mine design. The paper highlights the importance of slope geometry and fracture network orientation on potential slope instability mechanisms.

Abstract:To explore the dynamic mechanical properties and damage evolution law of the more common layered rock masses in geotechnical engineering, this paper determined the Holmquist–Johnson–Cook (HJC) constitutive model parameters of dolomite, gray sandstone, and limestone according to the static mechanical parameters of the rock mass. We used Hypermesh/ANSYS software to establish the numerical analysis model, carried out the dynamic impact numerical simulation of the layered rock mass, and analyzed the stress wave propagation characteristics, dynamic stress–strain relationship, energy dissipation, and damage evolution laws of layered rock masses under different combinations. At the same time, this paper analyzed the stress characteristics of the layered rock mass and studied its failure characteristics. The research results show that the wave impedance matching relationship alters the dynamic characteristics of the layered rock mass; however, with the increase in impact velocity, the difference gradually weakens. The difference in elastic modulus leads to different initial failure modes of layered rock masses, and the quality of the wave impedance matching relationship leads to differences in the law of damage evolution of layered rock masses. Under different combination forms, the failure degree and failure modes of the two parts of the layered rock mass are different.

Abstract:Loess landslides result in heavy casualties and economic losses. Among them, toppling is one of the predominant failure modes in Malan loess. Loess toppling failure normally arises from deep vertical cracks, which tend to develop in the shoulder areas of loess slopes and extend to a depth of several meters. Under natural conditions, loess' static lateral pressure coefficient is low and the loess mass within a 2 m horizontal depth from the slope surface approximates an unconfined compression stress state. In this work, we sought to further examine this unconfined compression state using acoustic emission monitoring and in situ computed tomography scans to investigate the mechanical behavior of Malan loess. Results indicated that Malan loess failed under compression-induced tension in unconfined compression condition. It exhibited the brittle failure with an abrupt release of elastic energy. The failure plane was at large angles and occurred nearly along the loading axis. This result coincided well with the vertiloess structure, which is characterized by vertically aligned strong units and weak segments. The above failure mode supports the formation of vertical cracks in the loess strata and consequently the toppling and crack sliding slope failures, as well as the formation of loess walls and columns.

Abstract:Primary toppling usually occurs in layered rock slopes with large anti-dip angles. In this paper, the block toppling evolution was explored using a large-scale centrifuge system. Each block column in the layered model slope was made of cement mortar. Some artificial cracks perpendicular to the block column were prefabricated. Strain gages, displacement gages, and high-speed camera measurements were employed to monitor the deformation and failure processes of the model slope. The centrifuge test results show that the block toppling evolution can be divided into seven stages, i.e. layer compression, formation of major tensile crack, reverse bending of the block column, closure of major tensile crack, strong bending of the block column, formation of failure zone, and complete failure. Block toppling is characterized by sudden large deformation and occurs in stages. The wedge-shaped cracks in the model incline towards the slope. Experimental observations show that block toppling is mainly caused by bending failure rather than by shear failure. The tensile strength also plays a key factor in the evolution of block toppling. The simulation results from discrete element method (DEM) is in line with the testing results. Tensile stress exists at the backside of rock column during toppling deformation. Stress concentration results in the fragmented rock column and its degree is the most significant at the slope toe.

Abstract:The stability of potentially toppling rock blocks has been typically addressed for the case of regular block geometries showing symmetry planes and resting on surfaces aligned with the slope face, i.e., the strike of the slope is parallel to the block sides and their basal planes. However, these simple geometries with ideally oriented blocks are not often found in nature. This study aims to bridge this knowledge gap through analytical and experimental approaches, in the form of laboratory physical models, to study toppling cases for non-conventional scenarios. An engineering geology review was first conducted, identifying potential non-standard cases in nature. Then, the current analytical solutions for both the factor of safety and critical toppling angle were modified for these misaligned cases, focusing on single block and standard block toppling, and considering the effect of block-edge rounding. Physical models support the analytical approach. It is concluded that toppling stability is slightly improved when the orientation of the basal plane of the blocks differs with the strike of the slope. In this way, for single blocks, the critical toppling angle increases a few tenths of a degree when the difference between strikes is 10°, about 1° with strike differences about 20° and 2 to 3° for misalignments about 30°. Similar increases are observed for block toppling cases. Accordingly, small differences in strike of basal planes and the slope contribute to slightly increasing the factor of safety of slopes prone to block toppling. This approach improves practical engineering toppling stability analyses.

Abstract:To evaluate the dynamic stability of dangerous rock masses under seismic excitation more reasonably, a mass viscoelasticity model was adopted to simulate the two main controlling surfaces of a toppling dangerous rock mass. Based on the principles of structural dynamics, a dynamic response analysis model and motion equations were established for toppling dangerous rock masses. The Newmark-β method was utilized to establish a calculation method for the dynamic stability coefficient of a toppling dangerous rock mass. This method was applied to the WY2 dangerous rock mass developed in a steep cliff zone in Luoyi Village, and the dynamic stability coefficient time history was calculated. Subsequently, the acceleration response signals of the dangerous rock mass in different directions were analyzed using wavelet packet transform. The results show that the sum of the energy proportions of the first to third frequency bands in the n1 and s2 directions exceeded 95%. This suggests that the n1 and s2 directions of the WY2 dangerous rock mass suffered the initial damage under bidirectional seismic actions. Finally, the marginal spectra variations of the acceleration response signals in different directions were analyzed based on the HHT. The results show that the seismic energy in the n1 and s2 directions of the dangerous rock mass was found to be the most significant under seismic loading, indicating that the rock mass experienced the most severe damage along these two directions. This reveals that the failure mode of the dangerous rock mass is inclined toppling, consistent with the results of wavelet packet analysis.

Abstract:In order to systematically reveal the dynamic response characteristics of rock mass slopes subject to seismic excitation, time-domain and frequency-domain analyses are used to investigate the dynamic response of a bedded rock slope from multiple perspectives, using the two-dimensional numerical dynamic analyses. Based on the numerical simulation results, the influence of the weak bedded structural planes on the propagation characteristics of seismic waves in the slope is analyzed. The time-domain analysis suggests that the topographic and geological conditions have an influence on the dynamic response of the slope. The effects of ground motion direction on the dynamic response characteristics of the slope are identified. In addition, according to the frequency-domain analysis, the impacts of slope surface, elevation, and structural plane on the seismic response characteristics of the slope are also clarified. The intrinsic characteristics of the slope are investigated by using Fourier spectral analysis and modal analysis, and the deformation response characteristics of the slope are clarified. The relationship between different natural frequencies of the slope, the predominant frequency of the seismic wave, and the dynamic response characteristics of the slope is discussed. Moreover, the dynamic failure mechanism of the slope is analyzed. This work provides a reference for the seismic analysis of this type of slope.
Topography Response to Horizontal Slab Tearing and Oblique Continental Collision: Insights From 3D Thermomechanical Modeling

Abstract:Abstract The horizontal propagation of slab detachment (slab tearing) is known to control lateral migration of the mountain uplift along the collisional belt. However, along‐strike differential collision due to an oblique passive margin geometry can make the topography response more complex. In this study, we employ 3D thermomechanical modeling to distinguish between the lateral migration of the mountain topography driven by slab tearing and oblique continental collision itself. In our models, slab breakoff is triggered by the transition from oceanic to continental subduction, occurring earlier on one side of the passive margin than on the other due to the initial oblique configuration. However, once slab breakoff has begun, it spreads horizontally in the form of tearing at high velocity (∼38–118 cm yr −1 ), and associated topographic uplift also propagates with the same velocity. In contrast, the along‐strike migration of subsequent continental collision and related topographic uplift propagation is typically much slower (∼2–34 cm yr −1 ). Similarly, the vertical magnitude of surface uplift caused by slab tearing is higher (up to 10 mm yr −1 ) than the following collision phase (<4 mm yr −1 ). The parametric analysis reveals that slab tearing velocity and the associated horizontal propagation of mountain uplift depends on obliquity angle and slab age, whereas the migration of collision‐induced topographic growth is controlled by the convergence velocity and obliquity angle. Finally, we show that presence of microcontinental block detached from the passive margin leads to spatial and temporal transition from horizontal to vertical slab tearing and more intense syn‐collisional mountain building.

Abstract:The dynamic parameters of a dangerous rock mass reflect the degree of damage of the structure of its surface. There is still an urgent problem to identify the dynamic parameters of a dangerous rock mass based on the characteristics of the constant micromotion at its site. To address this problem, a method is proposed to identify the dynamic characteristics of a dangerous rock mass undergoing excitation caused by constant micromotion: (1) the vibration of a dangerous rock mass undergoing excitation from constant micromotion is classified as forced undamped structural vibration with a single degree of freedom. The ratio of the amplitude of the spectrum of the dangerous rock mass to the amplitude of the spectrum of the bedrock is defined as the relative amplitude spectrum. The first-order natural frequency is identified from the relative amplitude spectrum. (2) Bedrock is the source of excitation of a dangerous rock mass. When a mechanical wave propagates to a dangerous rock mass, it crosses the porous surface of media with structural damage, and mechanical wave scattering occurs. The frequency domain of the mechanical wave changes. The center frequency shifts to a low frequency. By means of laboratory model tests, the changes in the dynamic parameters of models of a cantilevered dangerous rock mass and a sliding dangerous rock mass with structural surface damage are analyzed. It is concluded that (1) based on the theory of vibration mechanics, the first-order natural frequencies of dangerous rock masses can be obtained from their relative amplitude spectra. The first-order natural frequencies of dangerous rock masses undergoing constant micromotion are measurable. (2) The damage of the structural surface of a dangerous rock mass with macroscopic fractures can be identified by its first-order natural frequency. The center frequency cannot reflect the development of fractures. The damage of the structure of the surface of a dangerous rock mass with microscopic fractures can be identified by the change in the center frequency in its high-frequency band. The first-order natural frequency cannot reflect the development of fractures. (3) There are limitations in using single vibration mechanics theory or elastic wave scattering theory to analyze the damage of the structure of the surface of a dangerous rock mass; it is more effective to integrate both methods.

The sliding instability of rock roof block induced by vertical dynamic disturbance: An experimental study

Abstract:The dynamic disturbance is one of the major reasons to trigger rock block sliding along the <a href="/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/discontinuity">discontinuities</a> of roof rock mass during the mining excavation. A self-developed test machine was used in this study to investigate the sliding instability of an isosceles <a href="/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/trapezoid">trapezoid</a> rock block triggered by dynamic disturbance. The sliding displacement, strain, and impact energy were monitored during the hammer impact under different lateral clamping load conditions. The experimental results show that the typical vertical displacement of key blocks can be divided into three modes post-disturbance depending on the clamping load and impact energy. Two distinct instability processes were observed once the key block began to lose stability and fall: Immediate falling and delayed falling. The difference between them involves the instantaneous slide distance and pendulum-type <a href="/topics/engineering/propagating-wave">wave propagating</a> on the sliding interface. The critical impact energy causing the key block to fall shows a nearly logarithmical increment with the gradually ascending lateral clamping load. Based on the <a href="/topics/engineering/energy-analysis-technique">energy analysis</a>, an analytical solution to key block sliding displacement under dynamic disturbance is proposed, which accounts for the influence of clamping load, disturbance energy, <a href="/topics/engineering/interface-friction">interface friction</a> coefficient, and key block incline angle. By comparison with the experimental results, the theoretical calculation is shown to effectively estimate the sliding distance of the key block under dynamic disturbance. This work may provide some sound guidance for the real-time assessment of key rock block stability via displacement monitoring.

Abstract:This study is devoted to revealing the vibration responses of anchored fractured rock structure subjected to external excitation disturbances. By utilizing a self-constructed vibration testing platform, a series of vibration tests were conducted regarding various anchoring parameters (bolt spacing D, pre-tightening torque Pt and types of bottom support) and lateral forces Fl. Modal analysis was employed to propose modal parameters including natural frequency ωr and damping ratio ξr, extracted from the vibration signals, as sensitive indicators for assessing structural stability. The test results reveal that a smaller D and higher Pt can effectively enhance the reinforcement effect provided by bolts, as indicated by an increase in ωr and a decrease in ξr in self-stabilized state of the anchored structure. As Fl increases, the restraining effect supported by constrained frame intensifies, the increasing ωr and decreasing ξr can be observed during lateral loading. When the anchored structure is subjected to a large Fl, the weak support areas between adjacent steel belts are susceptible to concentrate as zones of rock collapse, resulting in the formation of circular cavities and a corresponding sharp reduction in Fl, alongside a pronounced decrease in ωr and a significant increase in ξr. Compared to the steel belts, the steel mesh acting as bottom support structure has more advantages in providing effective restraint to achieve self-stability of the anchored structure, as the steel mesh is able to distribute the internal stress more uniformly and reduce localized stress concentrations between rock blocks. As the mining face advances, the stress concentration and redistribution caused by mining activities lead to an increase in fragmentation degree of the roadway roof and a decrease in ωr. The findings of this study provide a scientific basis for understanding the relationship between vibration signals and the stability of anchored fractured surrounding rocks in roadway.
Insight into the critical morphological characteristics of earthquake-induced sequential rock avalanches in weathered-fractured rock cliffs

Abstract:Rock avalanches are a significant threat to transportation or hydraulic infrastructure, as they can also cause catastrophic secondary destruction in large practical engineering or to nearby residents. Earthquake-induced rock avalanches have been the most common and prominent natural hazard phenomena among geological hazards in recent years. Earthquake-induced rock avalanche events usually begin when a massive rock mass or multiple rock masses separate from a rock slope, progressively fragmenting and transforming into fast-moving, cohesionless rock falls. Earthquake-induced sequential collapse often occurs on weathered and fractured rock cliffs in horizontal strata, and its kinematic dynamics and destabilization mechanism are significantly different from those of isolated collapse due to weathering. In this study, the failure characteristics of the initiation and movement process of the avalanche are revealed in detail, through physical model experiments and analytical solutions, thereby obtaining an earthquake-controlled mechanical model equation. Our methods use the inflection points of the displacement time curve at the top of the rock wall and the digital images acquired by the shaking test bench to quantify the critical damage time point and to characterize the critical morphology of continuous collapse. A mathematical model of analytical solution is proposed, which aims to address the kinematic mechanics mechanism of sequential collapse under translational and rotational motion models. The comparative analysis results of the experiment and analytical solutions reveal that the transformed motion pattern is controlled by the ratio between the model stacking height, the rock block size, and the seismic acceleration. Whereas the rotational motion pattern is mainly influenced by the nodal dip angle, model stacking height, and seismic acceleration. The results of the study are of great scientific importance to elucidate the destruction mechanism of the earthquake-induced sequential collapse of rock avalanches and to determine the evolution characteristic of subsequent rockfalls motion of dangerous rocks. The proposed framework for the analysis of rock avalanches can be applied to understand the critical topographic features and mechanical mechanism behavior of analogous geological hazards.

Numerical Simulation Of Earthquake Effects On Rock Slope

Abstract:During 5. 12 Wenchuan Earthquake, there were lots of huge landslides and collapses occurred in hard rock areas. This uncommon phenomenon is beyond our knowledge. This paper discussed the different patterns of stress and displacement distributions within a perfect slope when it is subject to horizontal and vertical vibrational loads with various loading time. The analyses were performed using FEPG software. It is found that, both the stress and the displacement appear to reach their peak values when the amplitude of vibration load is 0. 1m. The maximum tensile stress at the top of a slope is bigger than around 100MPa which exceeds the anti-tensile limit of typical hard rocks such as granite, and so on. As a result, the hard rock mass breaks and landslide occurs. The study results also show that vertical vibrational loads would cause bigger stress and displacement peaks than horizontal vibrational loads. Under vertical vibrational load, maximum vertical displacement reached 0. 43m which is much bigger than the amplitude of the original load. Consequently vertical vibration might become the main factor that causes slope failures. Moreover, longer loading time will cause more serious deformation and damage.
Meteorological Controls on Reversible Resonance Changes in Natural Rock Arches

Abstract:Continuous ambient seismic monitoring is becoming common for structural health assessment of geologic features. However, the ability to detect or predict permanent mechanical change associated with damage requires detailed understanding of reversible drifts in resonance attributes associated with changing meteorological conditions. Here we analyze the response of 17 sandstone rock arches to changing meteorological conditions during extended vibration‐based monitoring, with a focus on one arch in Utah which was continuously monitored for 15 months. Our results show that variations in resonance are correlated with temperature on daily and yearly time scales, but that the temperature sensitivity of frequency changes are variable at different sites and resonance modes, generally ranging from 0.5 – 6% per 10°C. Numerical modeling suggests the primary mechanism governing these frequency drifts is stress stiffening, where confined thermal dilation induces bulk stress changes in the low‐stress, nonlinear elastic regime via fracture closure. Secondary mechanisms affecting resonance attributes are driven by moisture, including formation of shallow pore ice, which can generate sharp frequency changes of up to 17% per ‐10°C, and moisture‐induced softening. Daily lag times of several hours between temperature and frequency extrema provide constraints on the rock volumes affected by these mechanisms, indicating modal attributes are sensitive to thermally driven changes occurring in the outermost centimeters of the structure. Through improved understanding of the reversible variations of rock mass resonance, our results aid future assessment of irreversible frequency changes associated with damage, and thus structural health monitoring of fragile geologic features.

Abstract:The common geological bodies found in southwest China are layered mass slopes. The modal analysis method is performed on four finite element numerical models of rock slopes, including the homogeneous slope, horizontally layered slope, bedding slope, and toppling slope to investigate the dynamic deformation characteristics of the layered slopes. Their dynamic deformation characteristics are systematically studied according to the modal characteristics of slopes. By using modal analysis, the numerical results show that a series of natural frequencies and vibration modes of the slopes can be obtained. The type of structural planes affects the natural frequency of the slopes. The values of the natural frequency of the slopes are as follows: homogeneous slope > toppling slope > horizontally layered slope > bedding slope. Weak structural planes also have an amplification effect on the dynamic deformation of the slopes according to the analyses of the relative displacement (U) of the first vibration modes of the slopes. The natural frequency has a significant impact on the dynamic deformation characteristics of the slopes. Low-order natural frequency mainly induces the overall deformation of the top slope and slope surface area, whereas the high-order natural frequency mainly induces the local deformation of the slope. Modal analysis can provide a new idea for further study of dynamic characteristics of rock slopes.

Abstract:The seismic behavior of rock slopes accompanied with discontinuity is heavily governed by the geometrical distribution and mechanical properties of discontinuity. Especially, high and steep rock slopes, which are dominated by sub-vertical discontinuity, are likely to collapse due to toppling failure and it causes serious damage to structures surrounding the slopes. Ten thousands of landslides, collapses and other geological disasters occurred in the Wenchuan Ms 8.0 great earthquake on May 12, 2008 in Sichuan province of central China. The field survey during the disaster investigations indicated that it shows the tensile failure close to the top of slop and the shear failure below it. However, it is difficult to assess quantitatively toppling failure potential. In order to clarify mechanism of toppling failure in rock slopes and evaluation on seismic stability, 2D joint elements around each rock column is proposed to simulate the discontinuity of rock slope, which is different from Goodman joint and composed with normal spring Knand shear spring Kswithout volume. By a nonlinear numerical FEM analysis, the dynamic response of the rock slopes could demonstrate the landslide mechanism. Coupled with the effect of amplification on the toppling, the seismic horizontal acceleration at the top of slopes is often large, and then coursed inertia force would far exceed the tensile strength of rock mass. Eventually, the opening and sliding of joint elements occurs on the slope are identified based on the nonlinear characteristics of the joint elements. The result shows that a toppling failure could have occurred on the slope and the sliding plane also could be observed, which shows agreement with the existing investigation flexural toppling failure during the Wenchuan great earthquake.
