Abstract:Outburst floods related to glacial or landslide damming are a major agent of geomorphic change in mountain rivers. Although the evidence between outburst flooding and riverine landscapes has been gradually recognized, the lack of hydraulics to the extent that there has still not been quantified on the relationship of how the amount and spatial distribution of these changes relate quantitatively to the hydraulic conditions and durations of these catastrophic events. This study combined remote and field observations of the 2018 Baige outburst flood with two-dimensional numerical simulation using the diffusive wave equation. By feeding the measured dam-breach hydrograph and comparing three different Manning coefficients in numerical experiments, the simulation results show that when n = 0.055, the time of peak flow was only 0.5 h different from that indicated by measured data in Yebatan, 54 km downstream of the Baige landslide dam. Under high shear stress over several hours at sustained ~20 m water depth, lateral erosion caused by these outburst floods contributed to the adjacent landslide, which was activated in association with intermittent water velocity waves of approximately 17 m/s. Sustained high stream power (>50 kW m2) from the outburst flood eroded slope toes and accelerated slippage of six slopes. Combining simulation and observations, we also developed a physical model related to hillslope instability caused by high hydrodynamic erosion of riverbanks generated by flow waves lasting several hours, which explained the hydrodynamic response of the outburst flood to the canyon geomorphology. Furthermore, we suggest that the pattern of channel widening erosion and deposition is governed by the variation in shear stress and Froude number as the high-energy flood flows from a wide channel into a narrow river valley. Our findings highlight that the hydraulics of high-magnitude outburst floods and sediment transport play crucial roles in reshaping canyon geomorphology.

Abstract:In mountainous areas, fluvial rivers can reach mobile-bed equilibrium under alternating flood and base flow. However, a massive earthquake as well as subsequent landslides and debris flows can deliver huge amounts of sediment into river channels, driving a river far from its earlier equilibrium state and leaving it to gradually recover through a succession of floods and base flows afterwards. In this paper, we explore a river's mobile-bed equilibrium and its response to increased pulse sediment supply subsequent to a violent earthquake. In order to obtain a first but credible analysis, the simulated gravel-bed river was simplified to a rectangular channel with abundant erodible sediment, and a one-dimensional numerical model was implemented for simulation. The results show a hydrograph boundary layer in the mobile-bed equilibrium under the condition of cyclic hydrograph and sediment supply. The river bed responds rapidly after the disruption of the equilibrium but recovers slowly as the disruption disappears. The adjustment of river morphology near the entrance exhibits a nearly exponentially decay rate, which justifies the applicability of a geomorphic rate law. However, the decaying rate for the local bed slope has been found to differ remarkably between the aggradation and degradation stages. This might challenge the conventional use of the rate law, and thus needs to be explored in detail.

Abstract:Landslide dam failure and induced morphological changes are dependent on the material composition. A bimodal material composition is observed in landslide dams and riverbeds, but its influence on dam failure and morphological changes is poorly understood. In this study, we experimentally investigate landslide dam failure and its effect on local morphology by varying both dam and bed material composition. The results show that the peak discharge and final breach size increase, while the upstream residual water level decreases with increasing fine material (sand) content in the dam material. The effect of the bed material is limited and the whole dam failure process is rather controlled by the dam material. However, erosion surface slope and final erosion depth vary with changes in both dam and bed material. Sediments are deposited unevenly on the erodible bed, resulting in the formation of sandbars after dam failure. Similar topographies are observed with different erodible beds, while the deposition area and the anisotropy of deposition depth increase with increasing sand content in the dam material. The influence of bimodal material on dam failure and morphological changes is related to the incipient motion and transport of sediments, leading to the formation of armour layer and non-uniform bedform after dam failure. A dam failure pattern is proposed by considering the variation of the erosion surface slope caused by the change in erosion rate and the occurrence of deposition during dam failure. This study improves the understanding of landslide dam failure and induced morphological changes, and further aids the hazard management.

Abstract:Landslide dams are common hazards in mountainous regions, and outburst floods following dam breaches significantly impact people and infrastructure along rivers. The breaching processes associated with landslide dams and the interactions of outburst floods with channel terrain are very complex. The lack of event-based observations hampers the understanding of the mechanisms underlying these processes. Here, we combine a large-scale field experiment conducted on a natural river channel with a 3D numerical simulation. The numerical model was calibrated by a flume test and validated by experimental data from the large-scale physical model, demonstrating that it can accurately simulate the breaching process of landslide dams. The results show that the channel terrain controls the spatial and temporal distribution of the flow velocity and depth of the breach flood. The area of high flow velocity is mainly located in the block-confined narrow channel. In addition, outburst floods with high sediment concentrations led to extensive deposition in the downstream channels. The deposition thickness generally decreases in the flow direction and is affected by the channel topography. The measured changes in the particle size distribution of bed sediment before and after the dam breach support our findings. Moreover, the effect of upstream inflow on breach discharge was also investigated. It was found that the increasing inflow rate significantly accelerated the breaching process and increased the peak discharge. Our study enhances the understanding of the breach mechanism and reveals the connection between the hydrodynamic processes and geomorphic effects of breach floods, which can provide insight into the risk assessment of landslide dam hazards.

Abstract:Both regular flow and infrequent outburst floods shape the mountain landscape, but their relative contributions have been widely debated, in part due to the paucity of quantitative data on historical outburst floods. In June 2000, an outburst flood was triggered by a landslide-dam failure in a rapidly exhumed region of the Eastern Himalaya. To investigate the role of this kind outburst flood on landscape evolution, we employ topographic differencing, satellite imagery, and 2D hydraulic simulations to quantify the equivalent erosion and deposition within ~ 80 km flood route downstream of the breach. The flood lasted for ~ 10 h, with a peak discharge of 105 m3/s, leading to average erosion of 10 m, and contributed ~ 1-2 × 103 times more sediment than over long-term mean fluvial processes. The flood produced extensive lateral erosion, which triggered a threefold widening of the valley floor and abundant subsequent landslides. The ubiquitous boulder bars deposited in the channel inhibited incision, and facilitated lateral erosion after the flood. The resulting channel configuration and extensive bank erosion continue to affect fluvial dynamics until the next catastrophic flood that remobilizes the boulders. Our quantitative findings highlight the profound importance of recurrent outburst floods for gorge development and landscape evolution in Eastern Himalaya.
The Advective‐Diffusive Morphodynamics of Mixed Bedrock‐Alluvial Rivers Subjected to Spatiotemporally Varying Sediment Supply

Abstract:Mountain rivers subject to earthquakes and intense precipitation have highly variable sediment supply rates. Here we consider the morphodynamics of 1‐D mixed bedrock‐alluvial rivers with temporally varying sediment supply rates. We use a periodic sedimentograph, characterized by short periods of high sediment feed rate and longer periods of low sediment feed rate. We study the problem with a corrected Macroroughness Saltation‐Abrasion‐Alluviation model. In this model, incision is driven by bedload colliding with bedrock, but incision can be turned off by either zero sediment transport or complete alluviation. The formulation is advective‐diffusive, the former capturing upstream‐migrating knickpoints and the latter capturing smearing of the sedimentograph downstream. The steady state balance between incision and uplift is characterized by a bedrock slope that varies downstream, exhibiting low values at the upstream end of the domain and higher values farther downstream. Sufficiently far downstream, the bedrock slope approaches that predicted for constant feed rates. The zone of low slope near the feed point corresponds to a pocket (zone of locally depressed bedrock slope) in the longitudinal profile, which is repeatedly drowned in and flushed of sediment. The steady state slope profile of a shorter reach is a truncated version of that of a longer reach. A limiting reach length including the pocket defines a sedimentograph boundary layer, where the effects of sediment feed fluctuation are felt.
Investigation of 20 August 2019 Catastrophic Debris Flows Triggered by Extreme Rainstorms Near Epicentre of Wenchuan Earthquake

Abstract:A strong earthquake could trigger a large number of co-seismic landslides and induce large amount of loose materials on steep slopes and in the gullies. Under strong rainfall conditions, these loose materials could induce devastating debris flows, which will endanger the resettled population and destroy the re-built infrastructures. From 19 to 20 August 2019, fourteen debris flows were triggered by extreme rainstorms near the epicentre of the Wenchuan Earthquake. Among the fourteen incidents, three of them produced debris flow dams, which changed the course of the Minjiang River and resulted in flooding at different parts of the reconstructed Miansi town. In addition, sixteen casualties, twenty two missing persons, and destruction of four main roads were reported. In this paper, one typical catchment, named as “Dengxi gully”, near the epicentre of the Wenchuan earthquake (Sichuan Province, China) was chosen as a case study for remote sensing analysis, field investigation of landslide evolution and debris flow development before and after the catastrophic events. The debris flow in the study area was initiated in four stages: (a) generation of a large amount of loose materials from the Wenchuan Earthquake; (b) run-off erosion from co-seismic landslide material on hilly slopes and repeated mobilizations in steep channels over the years; (c) development of high intensity localised rainfall events; (d) wash out of accumulated materials in gully by the flood. The study of “8.20 debris flows” can provide a benchmark for analysis of long-term evolution of debris flows in order to identify potential continuing hazards in the earthquake-affected areas and make proper engineering decisions.
Morphodynamics of the Shi-ting River after Wenchuan Earthquake: Effects of In-Channel Weirs and Fine Sediment Supply on River Incision

Abstract:Since the 2008 Wenchuan (Ms. 8.0) earthquake, the Shi‑ting River in Sichuan Province, China has suffered massive bed incision, with the largest incision depth being more than 20 m in 7 years. Potential reasons include: breaks in sediment connectivity due to widespread in-channel weirs; the supply of fine sediment after the earthquake; intensive sand mining, etc. In this study, we simulate the combined role of in-channel weirs and fine sediment supply in determining the massive bed incision in the Shi-ting River. A one-dimensional river morphodynamic model is implemented. The simulated results show that the in-channel weirs can lead to bed incision and bed coarsening in the downstream channel. For a weir with a height of 5 m, the maximum incision depth is about 5 m, and the extent of downstream incision is no more than 20 km within 20 years. The supply of fine sediment can enhance the downstream channel incision, as the weir preferentially traps coarse sediment but passes the fine sediment downstream. However, a combination of in-channel weirs and the fine sediment supply cannot explain the dramatic incision (20 m in 7 years) as observed in the Shi-ting River. This suggests that the mining of gravel and sand had a significant role in driving channel degradation.

Abstract:An updated comprehension of landslide kinematics is a prerequisite for developing effective risk assessment and emergency management in the context of climate variability and anthropogenic disturbances. This study employs a multidisciplinary approach, taking the Outang landslide in China's Three Gorges Reservoir area as a case study. We examined the spatiotemporal surface processes and time- and subzone-dependent hydrometeorological factors from 2007 to 2021, particularly identifying rainfall regimes and reservoir water levels that trigger landslide movements. Given the uneven distribution of GNSS surface markers, we introduced weighted monthly mean displacement ( D ) and weighted marker frequency ( f ), enhancing the accuracy of our insights into distinct active subzones of the landslide. Preliminary results revealed July, September and June as months of higher susceptibility, as well as months with low water levels. The early-stage deformation control by reservoir water levels is being increasingly overshadowed by rainfall, due to extreme weather events and localized anti-slip measures. Long-term surface processes have also highlighted the transformation of landslide failure modes towards a compound pattern, from a predominantly retrogressive to a thrust-dominated pattern, and even overall translation coupled with localized rotation. Furthermore, the comparative analysis of normalized displacement/strain demonstrates the power and potential of integrating multi-source monitoring data. By revisiting the evolution processes and potential deformation mechanisms of the Outang landslide, we are getting closer to understanding more about the dynamics of giant landslides in reservoir areas, and illuminate the pathway towards enhanced risk management and emergency response strategies.

Abstract:Landslides are a crucial Earth surface process in mountain landscapes, rapidly transporting large amounts of sediment into lower-elevation areas, and periodically negatively impacting people and their livelihoods. Most studies focus on their immediate, local-scale impacts, but few recognize their remote impacts in mountain environments. In particular, major landslides along rivers can block river channels to form lakes through backwater inundation, posing a flood hazard to downstream areas. In 2018, two landslides occurred along the Baige section of the Jinsha River, eastern Tibetan Plateau, forming two landslide lakes and subsequently, causing two flood events. In this study, we explore the impacts of these events on hillslopes along the river banks, upstream and downstream of the Baige site. Using small baseline subset Interferometric synthetic-aperture radar (SBAS InSAR), we find many active landslides along the Jinsha River and detect a sudden acceleration in these instabilities following the 2018 events. We attribute upstream instabilities to an increase in river width and depth, related to the remains of the landslide dam, while downstream slope instability is likely caused by undercutting along the outburst route. Modelling indicates that failure of these newly detected landslides may block the river again and potentially extend the hazard chain. This work demonstrates that landslides along major rivers can initiate new instabilities, and that even a short-lived landslide-dammed lake can have long-term impacts on stability of hillslopes in river valleys.

Abstract:High-energy outburst floods triggered by failure of landslide- and glacial dams have strongly impacted rivers in eastern Tibet, affecting river geomorphology, human settlements, and infrastructure. However, understanding the impact of these extreme outburst floods on river landscape evolution is hampered due to lack of event-based observations. The second-largest modern outburst flood recorded in the Yigong River in 2000 provides an opportunity to investigate changes in river morphology caused by such extreme floods. By combining remote sensing images from 1984 to 2020 and 2-D numerical flood simulations with the Hydrologic Engineering Center’s River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) software, we show that the riverbank displacement during the Yigong outburst flood (YGOF) is an order of magnitude greater than that in other periods. Channel migration and variation in channel width in the upper reach (UR) straths are greater than those in the down reach (DR) gorges, and the curvature of the UR was greatly reduced by the YGOF while that of the DR increased. Furthermore, the channel morphology after the YGOF has become more dynamic. The relationship among the product of the dimensionless curvature (W/R), simulated flow velocity (U) and relative migration rate (M/W) in both the UR and DR follow similar distribution patterns, in which the maximum relative migration rates in the UR and DR occur where (W/R) · U ∼ 1. The results quantify the impact of the 2000 YGOF on the fluvial systems, which demonstrates that high-energy outburst floods play an extremely important role in mountainous river morphology and promotes our understanding of hydraulic process and geomorphological effects of paleofloods.

Abstract:Abstract Landslide dam outburst floods have a significant impact on landform evolution in high mountainous areas. Historic landslide dams on the Yigong River, southeastern Tibet, generated two outburst superfloods > 10 5 m 3 /s in 1902 and 2000 AD. One of the slackwater deposits, which was newly found immediately downstream of the historic dams, has been dated to 7 ka BP. The one-dimensional backwater stepwise method gives an estimate of 225,000 m 3 /s for the peak flow related to the paleo-stage indicator of 7 ka BP. The recurrence of at least three large landslide dam impoundments and super-outburst floods at the exit of Yigong Lake during the Holocene greatly changed the morphology of the Yigong River. More than 0.26 billion m 3 of sediment has been aggraded in the dammed lake while the landslide sediment doubles the channel slope behind the dam. Repeated landslide damming may be a persistent source of outburst floods and impede the upstream migration of river knickpoints in the southeastern margin of Tibet.

Abstract:Understanding the spatiotemporal evolution and driving mechanisms of landslides following a mega-earthquake at the catchment scale can lead to improved landslide hazard assessment and reduced related risk. However, little effort has been made to undertake such research in the Wenchuan earthquake-affected region, outside Sichuan Province, China. In this study, we used the Goulinping valley in the Bailong River basin in southern Gansu Province, China, as an example. By examining the multitemporal inventory, we revealed various characteristics of the spatiotemporal evolution of landslides over the past 13 years (2007–2020). We evaluated the activity of landslides using multisource remote-sensing technology, analyzed the driving mechanisms of landslides, and further quantified the contribution of landslide evolution to debris flow in the catchment. Our results indicate that the number of landslides increased by nearly six times from 2007 to 2020, and the total volume of landslides approximately doubled. The evolution of landslides in the catchment can be divided into three stages: the earthquake driving stage (2008), the coupled driving stage of earthquake and rainfall (2008–2017), and the rainfall driving stage (2017–present). Landslides in the upstream limestone area were responsive to earthquakes, while the middle–lower loess–phyllite-dominated reaches were mainly controlled by rainfall. Thus, the current landslides in the upstream region remain stable, and those in the mid-downstream are vigorous. Small landslides and mid-downstream slope erosion can rapidly provide abundant debris flow and reduce its threshold, leading to an increase in the frequency and scale of debris flow. This study lays the foundation for studying landslide mechanisms in the Bailong River basin or similar regions. It also aids in engineering management and landslide risk mitigation under seismic activity and climate change conditions.

Flash Flood In A Mountain Stream With Pulsed Sediment Input Following An Earthquake: Case Study Of Longxi River

Abstract:Following the "May 12, 2008" Wenchuan earthquake, landslides and debris flows have occurred more frequently than before in the earthquake-hit mountain area of southwest China's Sichuan Province. A huge amount of loose solid materials entered streams, resulting in abrupt changes in channel morphology and bed materials. This paper presents an investigation of the impacts of pulsed sediment input on flash floods in the Longxi River in the earthquake-hit region. A one-dimensional numerical model considering flood routing, bedload transport and bed elevation evolution was formulated. Flood hydrographs obtained from design rainstorms with different recurrence intervals were used as the boundary conditions at the inlet of computation domain. The results demonstrate that the peak flood stage can be significantly augmented due to the pulsed sediment input following the earthquake. Bed aggradation plays a dominant role in contrast to the extra flow resistance resulting from bedload transport. This suggests a significantly lowered threshold of rainfall for flash flooding. Meanwhile, the examination of two bed load transport formulae suggests the need of improving the understanding of bedload transport in flash floods.

Abstract:Landslide dams pose enormous risks to infrastructures and communities in mountainous areas near rivers, with potential dam breaches causing catastrophic secondary hazards. The morphology of a landslide dam, essential to its stability, is highly influenced by its formation conditions, including the landslide type, material composition, and valley shape. However, the correlation between the dam morphology and these factors is poorly understood. A series of laboratory tests were conducted to investigate the damming process and deposition morphology across three different granular materials, two sliding widths, and three valley shapes. Detailed topography surveys of the dam deposits were conducted using a 3D laser scanner. The experimental results show that the width of the sliding path and valley shape have a significant effect on the morphology of a landslide dam. The dam deposits under a narrow sliding path are more concentrated and higher with steeper upstream and downstream slopes. The cross-valley profiles are dependent on the sliding width and valley shape for the well-graded gravel with sand (Soil I, GW) and poorly-graded sand with gravel (Soil II, SP) but are of the linear shape for the poorly-graded sand (Soil III, SP). The crest surface frontal angle of soil III is larger than that of the soils containing gravel (i.e., Soils I and II). The dam length increases as the valley shape changes from rectangular to trapezoidal and then to triangular, and shows opposite trends under the two sliding widths as the gradation becomes finer. The dam height decreases under the narrow sliding path as the soil changes from Soil Ito Soil II to Soil III. In addition, larger particles (i.e., gravels) tend to accumulate on the surface and opposite side whereas finer particles (i.e., sand) tend to accumulate on the bottom and source side.(c) 2021 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Abstract Regular flows and infrequent outburst floods shape many mountain landscapes, but the relative contributions from these gradual processes and infrequent high-magnitude events have been widely debated, in part due to a paucity of reliable data from historical outburst floods. Here we quantify erosion and deposition from a catastrophic outburst flood in June 2000, caused by a landslide-dam failure on the Yigong River in a rapidly exhumed region of the Eastern Himalaya. The flood, with a peak discharge of 105 m3/s, lasted for only ~ 10 hours, but its geomorphic effects were equivalent to the cumulative effect of 1–2×103 years of long-term fluvial processes in the region. Ubiquitous boulder bars deposited in the channel by the flood promoted extensive lateral erosion through increased bed roughness. As a result, the valley floor widened threefold, triggering many additional secondary landslides, which contributed boulders to the riverbed. The resultant widespread bank erosion and concurrent landslides will continue to influence fluvial dynamics until the next catastrophic flood remobilizes the boulders. Our quantitative findings highlight the importance of recurrent outburst floods for gorge development and landscape evolution in southern Asia and in rapidly uplifting mountain belts worldwide. Numerical investigation of sediment-charged flash flood due to a cascade of natural dam failures

Abstract:<p>Landslide natural dams are commonly formed in a river valley of mountainous areas due to heavy rainfall or earthquake, which can be a complete or partial blockage. Different from conventional man-made dams, natural dams typically comprise unconsolidated and poorly sorted material, and are vulnerable to failure and breaching in short period due to overtopping or seepage. For those small sediment blockage in a river valley, their failures frequently occur during high intense rainfalls, which will induce a large flash flood with high-concentrated sediment downstream in a short period, and the magnitude is likely to be amplified along the flow direction due to the inclusion of a large amount of sediment. This can result in significant and sudden debris flow or high sediment-charged flash flood in the downstream for human life and property. Cascade failures of a series of natural dams in a gully have been considered to be a primary reason for the enlargement of high sediment-laden flash flood. In general, cascading natural dams can be formed along the sloping channel due to the randomness and unpredictability of landslides, which complexes the hydraulics of landslide dam failures.</p><p>This study evaluates the formation and development of sediment-charged flash floods due to cascading failure of natural dams through detailed hydro-morphodynamic modelling. The model used is based on shallow water theory and it has been successful in predicting the flow and morphological process during sudden dam-break, as well as full and partial dyke-breach.&#160; The study first calibrates the model with experiemntal data of a cascade of partical blockage dam failures. Then the calibrated model is applied to two types of natural dam failure cases: (1) straight steep slope channel with a series of small partial blockage dams; (2) bend channel with steep slope including a series of partical blockage dams. For both cases, various scenarios are modelled, including: (1) failure of a single dam in a sloping channel, (2) failure of two dams in a sloping channel, (3) failure of multiple landslide dams (four) in a sloping channel. Based on the detailed model results, the study systematically explores the tempo-spatial evolution of sediment-charged flash floods (discharge, flow velocity, and flow concentration) and geomorphic properties along the steep sloping channel.&#160; The effects of in-channel erosion and flow-driven sediment from dams on the evolution of flood dynamic process are analysed. &#160;The results improve the understanding of the formation and development mechanism of flash floods due to cascading landslide dam failures.&#160; The findings are beneficial for downstream flood risk assessment and developing control strategies for landslide-induced floods.</p>
Flow amplification from cascading landslide dam failures: Insights from flume experiments

Abstract:The 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake triggered numerous co-seismic landslides, and formed many landslide dams. Debris flows or floods during intense rainfall can cause the sequential collapse of those landslide dams. There is an amplification effect of the cascading landslide dam failures, which increases the magnitudes of debris flows or floods. Runs of flume experiments with different initial conditions were conducted to study the scale amplification effect. Among them, a large-scale flume experiment was performed to reduce the size effect of the miniaturized physical experiments to some extent. Experimental data such as the flow discharge, pore pressures, and microseismic and acoustic signals were used to investigate the dam failure processes and to quantify the amplification scale. The experimental results show that channel gradients and dam-failure patterns have significantly influences on the amplification effect. The intrinsic mechanism of the amplification effect can be interpreted from the perspective of energy, which is a progressive storage of potential energy and subsequent rapid release of the energy. Steep channel gradients imply greater potential energy and lower stability of the landslide dam. The sudden dam collapse related to internal pore pressure evolution will lead to rapid release of the accumulated potential energy to downstream, and cause a maximum instantaneous dam-break discharge. Experimental results show that the peak dam-break discharge caused by sudden failure can be 2–3 times that of overtopping, which should be fully considered to avoid underestimating the scale of the potential catastrophe.

Abstract:Landslide dams in mountainous areas are quite common. Typically, intense rainfalls can induce upstream flows along the sloping channel, which greatly affects the stability and failure modes of landslide dams. If a series of landslide dams are sequentially collapsed by an incoming mountain torrent (induced by intense rainfall), large debris flows can be formed in a short period of time. This also amplifies the magnitude of the debris flows along the flow direction. The catastrophic debris flows, which occurred in Zhouqu, China on August 8, 2010, were indeed caused by intense rainfall and the upstream cascading failure of landslide dams along the gullies. Experimental tests were conducted in a sloping channel to understand the dynamic process of cascading landslide dam failures and their effect on flow scale amplification. Similar to the Zhouqu conditions, the modeled landslide dams were distributed along a sloping channel and breached by different upstream flows. For each experiment, the front flows were sampled, the entrained grain sizes were analyzed, and the front discharge along the channel was measured. The results of these experiments show that landslide dams occurring along the channel can be destroyed by both high and low discharge flows, although the mechanisms are quite different for the two flow types. Regardless of flow type, the magnitude of the flows significantly increases after a cascading failure of landslide dams, resulting in an increase in both the diameter and the entrained coarse particles percentage.
System‐Wide Effects of Local Bed Disturbance on the Morphological Evolution of a Bifurcating Channel Network

Abstract:Abstract Deltaic channel networks are important conduits for water and material supplies to the fluvial and coastal communities. However, increasing human interventions in river deltas have altered the topology and geometry of channel networks as well as their long‐term evolution. While the morphological evolution of a single channel has received extensive studies, the system‐wide morphological responses of channel networks to local disturbances remain largely unclear. Here we investigate the morphological responses of a bifurcating channel network subject to local disturbance of channel deepening due to dredging and sand mining through idealized simulations, and further compare the results with the reference scenarios of a single channel and theoretical analysis of the phase plane. The results show that the infilling of the local deepening is associated with the erosion of the entire branch, which also causes system‐wide effects on the siltation of the other branch. The morphological responses of the bifurcating channel network consist of a relatively short stage for the infilling of the local deepening followed by a relatively long stage for recovering the equilibrium configuration of the river bifurcation. The system‐wide effects of the local disturbance arise from the altered water surface slope and water partitioning downstream of the bifurcation due to the local deepening. Also, the prolonged recovery of the equilibrium configuration is consistent with theoretical analysis, which reveals a slow evolution of the bifurcation when approaching the equilibrium. Our results can help understand the long‐term morphological responses of large‐scale complex channel networks and inform water managements under increasing human interventions.
