Abstract:Covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) with two-dimensional structures have exhibited promising visible-light-induced H-2 evolution performance. However, it is still a challenge to improve their activity. Herein, we report pi-conjugation-linked CTF-1/GO for boosting photocatalytic H-2 evolution. The CTF-1/GO hybrid material was obtained by a facile low-temperature condensation of 1,4-dicyanobenzene in the presence of GO. The results of photocatalytic H-2 evolution indicate that the optimum hybrid, CTF-1/GO-3.0, exhibited an H-2 evolution rate of 2262.4 mu mol . g(-1) . h(-1) under visible light irradiation, which was 9 times that of pure CTF-1. The enhanced photocatalytic performance could be attributed to the fact that GO in CTF-1/GO hybrids not only acts as an electron collector and transporter like a "bridge" to facilitate the separation and transfer of photogenerated charges but also shortens the electron migration path due to its thin sheet layer uniformly distribution over CTF-1. This work could help future development of novel conjugated CTF-based composite materials as high-efficiency photocatalyst for photocatalysis.

Abstract:In order to promote photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction in covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs), it is imperative to functionalize highly crystalline CTFs. Guided by theoretical predictions and calculations, modifications are applied to CTF‐1 using functional groups with varying electronic effects. The improved photocatalytic activity is witnessed by the incorporation of electron‐donating groups. Experimental findings indicate that chemical modification optimizes the valence band position, broadens visible light absorption, and accelerates the charge carrier dynamics. The high crystalline covalent triazine framework‐1 (CTF‐1), composed of alternating triazine and phenylene, has emerged as an efficient photocatalyst for solar‐driven hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, it is of great challenge to further improve photocatalytic HER performance via increasing crystallinity due to its near‐perfect crystallization. Herein, an alternative strategy of scaffold functionalization is employed to optimize the energy band structure of crystalline CTF‐1 for boosting hydrogen‐evolving activity. Guided by the computational predictions, versatile CTF‐based polymer photocatalysts are prepared with different functional groups (OH, NH2, COOH) using binary polymerization for practical hydrogen production. Experiment evidence verifies that the introduction of a limited number of electron‐donating groups is sufficient to maintain high crystallinity in CTF, modulate the band structure, broaden visible light absorption, and consequently enhance its photophysical properties. Notably, the functionalization with OH exhibits the most positive effect on CTF‐1, delivering a photocatalytic activity with a hydrogen‐producing rate exceeding 100 μmol h−1.

Abstract:The conversion of solar energy and water to hydrogen via semiconductor photocatalysts is one of the efficient strategies to mitigate the energy and environmental crisis. Conjugated polymeric photocatalysts have advantages over their inorganic counterparts. Their molecular structures, band structures, and electronic properties are easily tunable through molecular engineering to extend their spectral response ranges, improve their quantum efficiencies, and enhance their hydrogen evolution rates. In particular, covalent triazine-based frameworks (CTFs) present a strong potential for solar-driven hydrogen generation due to their large continuous π-conjugated structure, high thermal and chemical stability, and efficient charge transfer and separation capability. Herein, synthesis strategies, functional optimization, and applications in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution of CTFs since the first investigation are reviewed. Finally, the challenges of hydrogen generation for CTFs are summarized, and the direction of material modifications is proposed.

Abstract:To solve serious energy and environmental crises caused by rapid industrial development, the formation of heterostructured photocatalysts is a promising approach for efficient and scalable H2 production from water splitting. In this study, a strategy for the synthesis of triphenylphosphine-based covalent organic framework (P-COF-1)/covalent triazine framework (CTF) 2D–2D heterojunctions via intermolecular π–π interactions has been reported. The experimental results show that the H2 production rate of the 5% P-COF-1/CTF heterojunction exhibits 14,100 μmol h–1 g–1, which is 2.5–2.6 times as much as that of pure CTF and the mechanical mixture (5% P-COF-1 + CTF). Based on the results of characterization and theoretical calculations, a possible mechanism to well explain the enhanced photocatalytic performance of the Type II heterojunction system has been proposed. Abstract:In biological systems, redox-driven catalytic processes efficiently occur through controllable active sites with a clearly defined stepwise charge transfer pathway. For artificial catalytic systems, especially pure organic, polymeric, and heterogeneous photocatalysts, the main challenge lies in gaining precise control of electron transfer pathways through the catalytic active sites. Here, we design crystalline phenothiazine-anchored covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) as a benchmark example of pure organic photocatalysts with precisely controllable unidirectional electron transfer pathways. Monofunctionalized phenothiazine units were copolymerized onto CTFs, leading to defined electron transfer within the polymer network with a strong dipole and a high built-in electric field upon light-induced charge separation. By combining in situ spectroscopic methods and transient time-dependent density functional theory calculations, we reveal that sulfur atoms on phenothiazine units were the major oxidative sites by formation of photogenerated holes. High catalytic activity, recyclability, and general applicability of the designed CTFs were demonstrated by important oxidation reactions such as oxidative coupling of primary amines, formation of benzimidazoles, oxidative formylation of N, N-dimethylanilines, and dehydration of aldoximes.

Abstract:Covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) have attracted a great deal of attention as an attractive new class of visible light-active, metal-free, and polymer-based heterogeneous photocatalysts. CTFs have demonstrated promising characteristics such as synthetic diversity, stability, nontoxicity, pure organic nature, and enhanced ordered structure. In this review, we aim to summarize the recent developments in CTFs ranging from novel preparation methods to critical factors that directly impact their photocatalytic efficiency. Various physical and chemical design strategies for morphology, band structure, charge separation, and transfer optimization described in the literature are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the enhancement and maximization of photocatalytic efficiencies of specific applications such as photoredox organosynthesis, water splitting, CO2 photoreduction, H2O2 generation, etc.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:A simple procedure of calcination under an Ar atmosphere has been successfully applied to create a covalent triazine framework bearing pyridine-type carbonitride moieties (PCN@CTF). The appending of PCN on the CTF led to visible light absorption at up to 600 nm in the UV/Vis diffuse-reflectance spectra. Photoluminescence and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy have been applied to clarify how modification of the CTF with PCN enhanced the separation efficiency of photoexcited charge carriers. An optimized 1%PCN@CTF sample showed the highest photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) rate of 170.2 ± 2.3 μmol g−1·h−1, 3.9 times faster than that over the pristine CTF. The apparent quantum efficiency of the HER peaked at (7.57 ± 0.10)% at 490 nm. This representative 1% PCN@CTF sample maintained continuous function for at least 15 h. This work provides new guidance for modification with PCN materials as a means of obtaining high photocatalytic efficiency and sheds light on the effect of appended pyridine rings on a CTF.

Abstract:Covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) are promising photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution. The current research focuses on optimizing the band structure and intrinsic charge separation efficiency of CTFs. Other influential factors, i.e., the water affinity and the interaction with the Pt co-catalyst, are rarely investigated. Herein, we provide a facile protonation strategy for significantly improving the photocatalytic performance of CTFs. The protonated CTFs (P-CTF) can exhibit a hydrogen evolution rate of 6595 μmol g–1 h–1, which is 7.14 times that of pristine CTFs. The main contribution of protonation is to improve the interaction among the P-CTF, H2O molecules, and Pt co-catalyst, which can increase the H2O concentration around the active catalytic sites, thus facilitating the transfer of the photogenerated electron from the Pt co-catalyst to the H2O. Our results provide some insight into the role of protonation in promoting the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance.

Abstract:The solar-driven hydrogen evolution from water splitting provides an ideal protocol for alleviating the global energy crisis and environmental issues. However, the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is often limited by poor light-absorption ability, sluggish electron-hole kinetics, and ineffective charge transfer. Herein, a pyridine-contained covalent triazine framework was delicately designed to facilitate single-atom Co immobilization (Co 1 -PCTF), exhibiting an impressive hydrogen evolution rate of 2562.4 μmol‧g -1 ‧h -1 , which is much higher than that of the pristine CTF. It has been experimentally and theoretically demonstrated that the introduction of the pyridine ring significantly enhanced the π-conjugation degree, optimizing the band structure and extending the visible-light absorption. The highly dispersed Co atoms show notable electron-rich property, promoting charge separation and offering abundant active sites for H + reduction. Additionally, the robust Co-N bridge with a large potential difference creates a built-in electronic field for efficient directional transfer from organic substrate to the Co site. This study provides novel insights into the rational design of CTF-based advanced photocatalysts with high activity and durability.

Abstract:AbstractFor metal‐free, organic conjugated polymer‐based photocatalysts, synthesis of defined nanostructures is still highly challenging. Here, we report the formation of covalent triazine framework (CTF) nanoparticles via a size‐controllable confined polymerization strategy. The uniform CTF nanoparticles exhibited significantly enhanced activity in the photocatalytic formation of dibenzofurans compared to the irregular bulk material. The optoelectronic properties of the nanometer‐sized CTFs could be easily tuned by copolymerizing small amounts of benzothiadiazole into the conjugated molecular network. This optimization of electronic properties led to a further increase in observed photocatalytic efficiency, resulting in total an 18‐fold enhancement compared to the bulk material. Full recyclability of the heterogeneous photocatalysts as well as catalytic activity in dehalogenation, hydroxylation and benzoimidazole formation reactions demonstrated the utility of the designed materials.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have recently attracted much attention as potential photocatalysts for hydrogen production. The effective separation of photogenerated charges is a key objective to improve the photocatalytic activity of COFs. Here, four COFs were synthesized through the Schiff-base reaction to investigate whether the presence (simultaneous or not) of triazine and ketone as acceptors in COFs improve electron-hole separation efficiency. Evidence indicates that, when triazine and ketone are simultaneously present in the COF charge separation is more efficient. The COF comprising two acceptors displayed the highest photocatalytic hydrogen production rate (31.43 μmol h -1 - 41.2 times and 3.4 times as large as those of the COFs containing only triazine or ketone, respectively). Moreover, the effect of the distance between the two acceptors on the electron-hole separation was investigated by changing the length of a bridging biphenyl ring. It turned out that the transport distance of a single phenyl group is more favorable for the catalytic reaction. This work affords an insight and support for the design of efficient COF photocatalysts.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising materials for converting solar energy into green hydrogen. However, limited charge separation and transport in COFs impede their application in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this study, the intrinsically tunable internal bond electric field (IBEF) at the imine bonds of COFs was manipulated to cooperate with the internal molecular electric field (IMEF) induced by the donor-acceptor (D-A) structure for an efficient HER. The aligned orientation of IBEF and IMEF resulted in a remarkable H2 evolution rate of 57.3 mmol·g–1·h–1 on TNCA, which was approximately 520 times higher than that of TCNA (0.11 mmol·g–1·h–1) with the opposing electric field orientation. The superposition of the dual electric fields enables the IBEF to function as an accelerating field for electron transfer, kinetically facilitating the migration of photogenerated electrons from D to A. Furthermore, theoretical calculations indicate that the inhomogeneous charge distribution at the C and N atoms in TNCA not only provides a strong driving force for carrier transfer but also effectively hinders the return of free electrons to the valence band, improving the utilization of photoelectrons. This strategy of fabricating dual electric fields in COFs offers a novel approach to designing photocatalysts for clean energy synthesis.

Abstract:Abstract Attempts to develop photocatalysts for hydrogen production from water usually result in low efficiency. Here we report the finding of photocatalysts by integrated interfacial design of stable covalent organic frameworks. We predesigned and constructed different molecular interfaces by fabricating ordered or amorphous π skeletons, installing ligating or non-ligating walls and engineering hydrophobic or hydrophilic pores. This systematic interfacial control over electron transfer, active site immobilisation and water transport enables to identify their distinct roles in the photocatalytic process. The frameworks, combined ordered π skeletons, ligating walls and hydrophilic channels, work under 300–1000 nm with non-noble metal co-catalyst and achieve a hydrogen evolution rate over 11 mmol g –1 h –1 , a quantum yield of 3.6% at 600 nm and a three-order-of-magnitude-increased turnover frequency of 18.8 h –1 compared to those obtained with hydrophobic networks. This integrated interfacial design approach is a step towards designing solar-to-chemical energy conversion systems.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have garnered attention for their potential in photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production. However, their photocatalytic efficiency is impeded by insufficient exciton dissociation and charge carrier transport. Constructing COFs with superior planarity is an effective way to enhance the π-conjugation degree and facilitate electron-hole separation. Nonetheless, the conventional linear linkers of COFs inevitably introduce torsional strain that disrupts coplanarity.Herein, we address this issue by introducing inherently coplanar triazine rings as linkers and fused building blocks as monomers to create covalent triazine frameworks (fused CTFs) with superior coplanarity. Both experimental and theoretical calculations confirm that CTFs constructed from fused building blocks significantly enhance the electron-hole separation efficiency and improve the photocatalytic performance, compared to the CTFs constructed with non-fused building blocks. The frontier molecular orbitals and electrostatic potentials (ESP) revealed that the ORR is preferentially facilitated by the triazine rings, with the WOR likely occurring at the thiophene-containing moiety. Remarkably, CTF-BTT achieved an exceptional H2O2 production rate of 74956 μmol g-1 h-1 when employing 10% benzyl alcohol (V/V) as a sacrificial agent in an O2-saturated atmosphere, surpassing existing photocatalysts by nearly an order of magnitude.

Abstract:Heterogeneous photocatalysis emerges as an exceptionally appealing technological avenue for the direct capture, conversion, and storage of renewable solar energy, facilitating the generation of sustainable and ecologically benign solar fuels and a spectrum of other pertinent applications. Heterogeneous nanocomposites, incorporating Covalent Triazine Frameworks (CTFs), exhibit a wide-ranging spectrum of light absorption, well-suited electronic band structures, rapid charge carrier mobility, ample resource availability, commendable chemical robustness, and straightforward synthetic routes. These attributes collectively position them as highly promising photocatalysts with applicability in diverse fields, including but not limited to the production of photocatalytic solar fuels and the decomposition of environmental contaminants. As the field of photocatalysis through the hybridization of CTFs undergoes rapid expansion, there is a pressing and substantive need for a systematic retrospective analysis and forward-looking evaluation to elucidate pathways for enhancing performance. This comprehensive review commences by directing attention to diverse synthetic methodologies for the creation of composite materials. And then it delves into a thorough exploration of strategies geared towards augmenting performance, encompassing the introduction of electron donor-acceptor (D-A) units, heteroatom doping, defect Engineering, architecture of Heterojunction and optimization of morphology. Following this, it systematically elucidates applications primarily centered around the efficient generation of photocatalytic hydrogen, reduction of carbon dioxide through photocatalysis, and the degradation of organic pollutants. Ultimately, the discourse turns towards unresolved challenges and the prospects for further advancement, offering valuable guidance for the potent harnessing of CTFs in high-efficiency photocatalytic processes.
