Abstract:Initial audit pricing discount can have important public policy implications related with auditor independence.This paper,based on the two competitive theoretical models of DeAngelo(1981) and Dye(1991),empirically tests the pricing behavior of initial audit by using the data of Chinese security audit market of year 2002—2004.The empirical results support the usefulness of CSRC's policy that requires public companies to disclose the audit fee information in their annual reports,the potential audiuor independence problem aroused by quasi rent and pricing discount will be eliminated or mitigated as the audit fee information being disclosed.The empirical results also have an important regulatory implication:we should pay principal attentions to the auditor switch behavior of big public corporations changing their auditor between the small audit firms.

Abstract:As a result of economic imbalances, global turmoil, and catastrophic global health events, economic policy uncertainty is rising across countries, and corporate risk taking is heterogeneous, which can affect auditors’ decisions. This paper explores the impact of economic policy uncertainty on abnormal audit fees based on a corporate risk-taking perspective, using A-share listed companies in China from 2007-2019 as a research sample. According to the research, the level of abnormal audit fees increases as economic policy uncertainty increases, and corporate risk-taking worsens the correlation. Further research shows that higher economic policy uncertainty leads auditors to increase additional inputs and charge a higher compensation for audit risks, resulting in a larger positive and negative abnormal audit fee. Additionally, the positive association between economic policy uncertainty and abnormal audit fees is present in non-state-owned enterprises, while it is not significant in state-owned enterprises.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to examine the effect of carbon emissions on audit fees. The authors hypothesize that firms in cities with higher carbon emission levels have lower reporting transparency, higher return volatility or are subject to higher reputation risk, causing them to be charged higher audit fees for auditing services. Design/methodology/approach The authors use panel data of 25,960 firm-year observations from a sample of Chinese firms. The carbon emission data for each Chinese city are obtained from the China Emission Accounts and Datasets for Emerging Economies. This paper adopts a multiple regression model to study the impact of carbon emissions on audit fees. Findings The authors find that firms located in cities with higher carbon emission levels and firms with more carbon emissions are charged, on average, a higher audit fee. This audit fee effect of carbon risk is transmitted by lessened information transparency and elevated financial risk within these firms. This paper shows that auditors consider carbon risk in their audit fee decisions and other factors that could influence audit risk and effort. Originality/value This study draws a connection between carbon emissions and audit fees. It is especially relevant due to the increasing importance of environmental factors in the audit risk assessment. In addition, the findings suggest that a firm implementing a proactive environmental strategy benefits the economy and decreases the costs to the firm for services such as auditing.

Abstract:Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to empirically analyze the impacts of motivation for avoiding loss and actual abnormal audit fees on management behaviors of audit opinion shopping.Design/methodology/approach - Using empirical research methods, this study employs regressive models and moderating effect models with data from Chinese listed companies from 2001 to 2008.Findings - By analyzing the empirical data, it is found that strong motivation for avoiding loss has a certain moderating effect on the relationship between abnormal audit fees and audit opinion shopping; abnormal descent of audit fees significantly increases both the likelihood of receiving modified audit opinions of annual financial reports and that of the improvement of audit opinions; listed companies reporting consecutive losses in the last two years have a higher likelihood of an improvement in unfavorable audit opinions because of stronger motivation for avoiding loss and audit opinion shopping of management; and strong motivation for avoiding loss has a significant moderating effect on the relationship between abnormal increase of audit fees and audit opinion shopping.Practical implications - This study has a significant practical implication for market supervisors, small and medium investors.Originality/value - The paper classifies abnormal audit fees into abnormal increase and descent of audit fees, and audit opinions differences into the improvement and deterioration of audit opinions, and further empirically analyzes and verifies the moderating effect of motivation for avoiding loss on the relationship between abnormal audit fees and audit opinion shopping.
Abnormal Audit Fees and Audit Quality, The Impact of Business Context on Auditors' Priorities

Abstract:Companies facing serious financial distress are more likely to engage in income-increasing earnings management than healthy firms in order to mask poor performance. In these contexts, audit firms might increase substantive tests, that should constrain discretionary accruals, as well as charging risk premiums, both resulting in growing audit fees. The different components of audit fees, namely a fee premium for auditors’ efforts or risk premium, however, have an opposing impact on audit quality. This paper aims thus to investigate how the business context status of a client might differently affect the auditors’ pricing policies and commitments in the audit process. We address our research questions adopting a matched sample consisting of bankrupt and healthy US firms in the post-SOX period, between 2005 and 2015. Consistent with our predictions, the results show a significant propensity of ex-post bankrupt firms to adopt upward earnings management. In these critical contexts, it reveals that auditors are primarily concerned about obtaining a risk premium, especially in the first year of an engagement, rather than extending the audit efforts to constrain earnings manipulation. By contrast, the higher audit fees charged to healthy companies by the newly appointed auditors result in effective audit efforts, therefore improving the earnings quality. This study thus provides evidence that in riskier business contexts auditors prefer conservative approaches to pro-active commitments by primarily adjusting risk premiums in response to a higher litigation risk. The paper contributes to the extant literature by documenting the existence of a component in the audit fees that results in low audit quality.

Abstract:This paper exploits a natural experiment to investigate the causal effects of the auditing fees on auditing quality: China recently imposed a minimum auditing fee requirement which forces some auditing firms to charge higher fees to their clients. We find a significant decrease in auditing quality for auditing firms affected by the rule, relative to those not affected. This effect is more pronounced when client firms are more price sensitive to auditing fees and when auditing firms face stronger competition in the auditing market. Our evidence supports the economic theory of auditor independence: a higher auditing fee impairs auditor independence and thus causes a decrease in auditing quality.

Abstract:This study examines how oil price uncertainty, measured by implied volatility, affects audit fees. Using samples from the energy industry, we find that oil price uncertainty increases audit fees. Furthermore, the mechanism analyses demonstrate that the increase in audit fees is driven by the increased audit effort rather than a higher audit risk premium. Additionally, the positive impact of oil price uncertainty on audit fees is more pronounced for non-state-owned firms, firms with weaker corporate governance, and firms with greater earnings manipulation risks. Finally, our main finding remains robust for oil price uncertainty measured by Shanghai Crude Oil Futures and West Texas Intermediate.

Managerial myopia and audit fees: Evidence from China

Abstract:Following the upper echelons and time orientation theoretical frameworks, this study meticulously examines the effects of managerial myopia on audit fees utilizing data of Chinese A-share listed companies spanning from 2007 to 2022. Employing textual analysis and machine learning techniques on MD&A, we find that managerial myopia can significantly increase audit fees by intensifying financial constraints, diminishing accounting information comparability, and compromising internal control quality. However, this relationship is accentuated by analyst coverage but attenuated by digital transformation. Cross-sectionally, we document a particularly pronounced positive association between managerial myopia and audit fees within firms exhibiting higher corporate risk tolerance, diminished industrial competition and a lower degree of marketization. Collectively, this study further enriches corporate governance and audit fees literature, advancing valuable insights for regulators, accountants and auditors.

Abstract:SUMMARY Previous studies document that lenders lack incentives to monitor borrowing firms or to make concessions during bankruptcy if these lenders insure against corporate default with credit default swaps (CDS). This article investigates whether external auditors increase their audit fees for those client firms that have their debt referenced by CDS. In a comprehensive sample of U.S. companies from 2001–2015, we find that CDS-referenced companies incur larger audit fees compared to companies without CDS. The economic magnitude of the audit fee increase ranges from 5.4 percent to 11 percent, depending on the econometric specification employed. Deteriorating corporate conditions or other observable characteristics do not explain the positive association between CDS trading and audit fees, or the increase in audit fees following CDS initiations. The findings suggest that auditors increase their professional skepticism and monitoring efforts of CDS-referenced clients; they might also expect higher liability losses. Abstract:High economic policy uncertainty in China amplifies operational risks and managerial pressure for businesses while driving the demand for independent audits. However, previous studies have paid limited attention to the impact of economic policy uncertainty on audit fees. This study aims to examine the impact of economic policy uncertainty on audit fees and to test whether the internal control quality will moderate this association at the firm level. This study employs the economic policy uncertainty index to measure uncertainty. The paper examines 3,469 Chinese A-share listed companies from 2007 to 2020, using STATA 17 for fixed-effects regression on panel data. The results show a robust positive association between economic policy uncertainty and audit fees (β = 0.0302, p &lt; 0.001). However, this association is weaker for companies with better internal control quality (β = –0.0229, p &lt; 0.001), suggesting that effective internal controls can mitigate the impact of economic policy uncertainty on audit fees. Furthermore, the findings indicate that this positive association is weaker for state-owned companies compared to non-state-owned companies (β = –0.0170, p &lt; 0.001). At the same time, the study does not establish a significant difference in the positive association between TOP 10 and non-TOP 10 accounting firms. This study examines the adverse effects of economic policy uncertainty from the perspective of audit fees. The results have implications for stakeholders, including the need for companies to establish effective internal controls and good government-business relationships and for governments to reduce economic policy uncertainty and increase transparency in their policies.

From this angel of view, the essay picks listed A share companies in Shenzhen and Shanghai stock exchange as study objects. The study reveals that executives salary gap shows positive correlation with audit fees. Related transactions don't affect the positive relationship between executive's salary gap and audit fees.

Abstract:Research background: Issuing an annual report inquiry letter is a powerful means by which securities exchanges regulate the information of listed companies, which can convey information, reveal risks, and sustain the orderly development of capital markets. However, research on the economic consequences is limited. Purpose of the article: This study analyses the relationships and mechanisms between annual report inquiry letters, key audit matters (KAMs), and audit fees. Methods: We collected data from Chinese A-share companies listed on the Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges between 2017 and 2022, totalling 9,903 observations. We used Stata to conduct mediation effects and heterogeneity tests on the data. We also conducted further research on the relationship between audit fees and the purchase of audit opinions. Findings & value added: The results indicate that (1) companies that receive annual report inquiry letters have higher audit fees. Furthermore, (2) companies that receive annual report inquiry letters are more likely to increase the number of disclosed KAMs, leading to higher audit fees. Finally, (3) the above relationship is more significant amongst companies audited by non-Big-Four accounting firms than amongst those audited by Big-Four accounting firms. Further, the increase in audit fees for the sample companies is not due to the purchase of audit opinions and is combined with robustness tests, further validating the conclusions of this study. These findings contribute to research on the economic impact of implementing the annual report inquiry system and new auditing standards, providing empirical evidence for the effectiveness of government oversight of capital markets.

Abstract:Using a large sample of Chinese-listed firms for the period of 2001–2014, we find that the auditors of clients with higher crash risk tend to charge higher fees, are more likely to issue modified audit opinions, and have a higher turnover tendency, which is consistent with the notion that a client’s exposure to higher crash risk imposes greater engagement risk on its auditor. Consistent with crash risk increasing auditor engagement risk, we find that crash risk is associated with a client’s poor accounting quality and high frequency of restatements, although auditors exert higher efforts when observing clients’ high crash risk. Taken altogether, our results suggest that a client’s crash risk serves as an informative signal for engagement risk, and that this factor plays a crucial role in shaping auditor-client contracting relationships.
The Contextual Nature of the Association Between Managerial Ability and Audit Fees

Abstract:Purpose This study examines whether auditors’ pricing decisions on managerial ability are affected by auditor litigation risk (financial distress or financial crisis), auditor’s familiarity with their client or regulatory changes in the post-Sarbanes–Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX) era. Design/methodology/approach Building on the extant audit fee literature, this study constructs an audit fee determinants model to examine how context affects auditors’ pricing of managerial ability. Findings Auditors offer a larger fee discount to more able client management teams when auditors face lower litigation risks or are more familiar with the client. Furthermore, managerial ability has a more pronounced effect on audit fees in the post-SOX era when managers are mandated to play more active roles in financial reporting (i.e. certification of financial statements required by SOX 302). Research limitations/implications Based on the audit risk model (Simunic, 1980), Krishnan and Wang (2015) show that the managerial ability of an audit client is relevant and important to auditors’ pricing decisions. This study demonstrates that managerial ability exhibits a non-linear relationship with audit fees and contextual factors, such as litigation risk, and that auditors’ familiarity with managers can alter the negative association between audit fees and managerial ability. This study extends Krishnan and Wang’s study by offering additional insights into auditors’ use of soft information such as managerial ability. Furthermore, the findings add to the literature on the impact of SOX on audit fees by suggesting that SOX has not only increased overall audit fees (Ghosh and Pawlewicz, 2009; Huang et al., 2009), it has also increased auditors’ price sensitivity to soft information (e.g. managerial ability). Practical implications This study provides insights for audit firms and client companies who are interested in understanding audit fee-pricing decisions. The findings also suggest that auditors need to be sensitive and responsive to various contextual factors when making pricing decisions. Originality/value Previous studies have not addressed the non-linear relationship between audit fees and soft information about managerial ability.

Audit Effort and Stock Price Crash Risk

Abstract:We examine how stock price crash risk is affected by audit effort, as measured by audit hours. Using a unique dataset of audit hours in China, we find that audit effort is negatively related to crash risk. The negative impact of audit effort on crash risk is more pronounced for listed firms that have higher inherent risks and weaker external monitoring of their information environment. Our findings are robust to various tests, including a two‐stage regression analysis, controlling for listed firm‐fixed effects and audit firm‐fixed effects, and using alternative measures of crash risk. In addition to audit output measures, audit effort has an incremental influence on crash risk. The effects of audit effort on crash risk continue to hold after controlling for auditor industry expertise and auditor tenure.

Abstract:To investigate the influence of corporate climate information disclosure on audit fees, this study examines the period from 2012 to 2021, focusing on companies listed on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges. The research is based on the quasi-natural experiment of the ESG rating disclosure event by SynTao Green Finance in 2015. Firstly, using principal component analysis and a multi-period difference-in-differences model, the study determines the impact of climate information disclosure on audit fees. Robustness tests are conducted using trimming procedures and placebo experiments, which confirm the initial findings. Secondly, building on the previous analysis, the study explores the interaction effects of analyst forecast deviation and the presence of the Big Four audit firms on the relationship between ESG ratings and audit fees. Finally, the research concludes that the disclosure of climate risk information reduces audit fees by mitigating information risk and operational risk for companies. Moreover, this negative impact of climate risk disclosure on audit fees is more pronounced when analyst forecasts are more accurate or when the auditing firm belongs to the "Big Four" group.

Abstract:In this study, we investigate whether the audit fees would be affected by the firms' climate-related risks. Using physical climate risks and transition climate risks indicators, we find that climate-related risks can significantly raise audit fees, and this finding still robustness on instrumental variables, replacing audit fees measure, and firm fixed effects model. Furthermore, potential mechanism demonstrates that climate-related risks increase audit fees by the media attention. Finally, the further analysis reveals that the energy firms, state-owned firms and large firms with climate-related risks have a more significant impact on audit fees than non-energy firms, non-state-owned firms and small firms.
