Abstract:Abstract Laser cladding technology is an advanced material surface modification technology, which has the advantages of a small dilution rate, a dense microstructure of the cladding layer, a good combination between coating and substrate, and no pollution of the working environment. The research progress of laser cladding is reviewed from three aspects: background types, basic principles, and research status. In the background category, the preset coating method and synchronous powder feeding method used in laser cladding technology are described. The research status of laser cladding technology is summarized from the aspects of cladding material, performance, and industrial application. Finally, some suggestions are put forward to obtain the cladding layer with no crack and good mechanical properties, and more technologies and laser cladding technology are expected to be combined in the future.

Abstract:Laser cladding is a process whereby a new layer of material is deposited on a substrate by laser fusion of blown powders or pre-placed powder coatings. Multiple layers can be deposited to formshapes with complex geometry. This manufacturing process has been used for material surface property modification and for the repair and manufacture of three-dimensional components. Laser cladding has attracted extensive research over the past 30 years. Over 2000 research papers have been published in journals and international conferences. Research in laser cladding covers many scientific issues, including processing techniques, physical and chemical properties of deposited materials and clad-substrate interfaces, microstructure and phases, rapid solidification phenomena, modelling and simulation, and systems engineering and applications. This article, focusing on the rapid heating/cooling processes and material response, summarizes the state of the art on two fundamental scientific aspects: rapid solidification and the material characteristics. The article includes a review of the microstructural refinement, extended solid solution, metastable phases, amorphous structure, and directional solidification. In addition, the article discusses the progress and state of the art in laser cladding of commercial alloy powders, carbides and intermetallics, in-situ synthesized particulate reinforced metal matrix composite coatings, compositional gradient materials, and alloy development. Laser cladding is capable of producing materials with designed macro/microstructures and properties.

Abstract:Engineering alloys are widely applied as important functional structural materials in aerospace, electronics, metallurgy, and other high-end engineering industries due to their superior properties. However, their further application remains notably restricted by numerous inherent limitations, including low hardness, terrible wear and high-temperature oxidation resistance. In response to this problem, the development of laser cladding (LC) technology has provided new approaches for surface modification of engineering alloys. In this review paper, the recent progress made in the preparation of engineering alloys by LC technology is thoroughly investigated. The elementary knowledge in this field is provided to establish the internal relationships among the laser processing parameters, microstructure, and significant mechanical properties. The LC processing methods and material systems are reviewed, and the critical functional coatings related to this field are also summarised and explored in detail. Furthermore, the current challenges and future efforts are presented, identifying the existing knowledge and technology gaps while also attempting to determine future research directions.

Abstract:In industries such as aerospace, petrochemistry and automobile, many parts of different machines are under environment which shows high temperature and high pressure, and have their proneness to wear and corrosion. Therefore, the wear resistibility and stability under high temperature need to be further improved. Nowadays, Laser cladding (LC) is widely used in machine parts repairing and functional coating due to its advantages such as lower dilution rate, small heat-affected zone and good metallurgical bonding between coating and substrate. In this paper, LC is introduced in detail from aspects of process simulation, monitoring and parameter optimization. At the same time, the paper gives a comprehensive review over LC material system as high entropy alloys (HEAs), amorphous alloy and single crystal alloy have been gradually showing their advantages over traditional metal materials in LC. In addition, the applications of LC in functional coatings and in maintenance of machine parts are also outlined. Also, the existing problems and the development trend of LC is discussed then.

Abstract:Laser cladding technology has become one of the most effective surface modification technologies to date due to its high energy density, small heat affected zone, low dilution rate and high cooling rate. However, with the increasing demand for products, the uneven tissue distribution, cracks, pores and other defects of the clad layer seriously limit its application and development. The performance and surface quality of the cladding layer need to be further improved. On this basis, the effects of different energy fields, such as electromagnetic fields, ultrasonic fields and induction heating, on the tissue properties of coatings are outlined and the mechanisms of the effects of various auxiliary technologies on the tissue properties and tissue transformation mechanism are reviewed. In addition, different posttreatment processes (heat treatment, surface strengthening, etc.) of laser cladding coatings are reviewed, providing a reference for further improvements in the microstructure and properties of the cladding layer and discussing existing problems and future development directions.

Abstract:Laser cladding technology is widely used in component repair and surface strengthening because of its advantages of various powder options and high processing efficiency. This paper outlines the application and research of transition layers in laser cladding and details the advantages of transition layers in terms of bonding performance, defect rate, and cladding thickness. Compared with conventional laser cladding, the composite process with the addition of transition layer has been further improved in terms of organization, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance. In addition, the repair process of laser cladding to meet the cladding thickness of the parts and avoid the degradation of surface properties is also discussed.

Abstract:As a new surface engineering technology, extreme high-speed laser cladding technology (EHLC), which originated from conventional laser cladding technology, has presented extraordinary characteristics, such as high cladding efficiency, excellent powder utilization rate, superior surface accuracy of the cladding layer, and a small heat-affected zone on the substrate. Compared with other surface technologies, it exhibits dominant advantages and extensive application prospects in the fields of surface manufacturing and additive manufacturing. In this paper, we first introduce the structure of the core equipment of the EHLC, including the laser device, the laser cladding head, the powder feeder, and the processing platform. Next, the research status of EHLC process control is summarized from three aspects: optimization of the coating forming process parameters, numerical simulation of the forming process, and external field-assisted technology. Third, we comprehensively review the coating systems of common metal alloys and metal matrix composites prepared by EHLC and their excellent properties. Additionally, the application status of EHLC in surface manufacturing and additive manufacturing is summarized in this paper. Finally, the research progress of EHLC in equipment, process, material, and application is also concluded, and its further development trend is proposed.

By selecting different parameters and coating materials, the surface hardness and wear resistance of titanium alloys can be effectively improved. The cladding material is a key factor affecting the quality and performance of the cladding layer. Common cladding materials mainly include self-fluxing alloy powder, ceramic powder and rare earth element powder. This paper reviews the current research status of laser cladding material system on titanium alloy, and explains the problems that still need to be solved and puts forward the outlook.

Abstract:With the development of society and the economy, there is an increasing demand for surface treatment techniques that can efficiently utilize metal materials to obtain good performances in the fields of mechanical engineering and the aerospace industry. The laser metal deposition (LMD) technique for cladding has become a research focus in recent years because of its lower dilution rate, small heat-effect zone and good metallurgical bonding between the coating and substrate. This paper reviews the simulation technology for the melt pool's grain growth mechanism, temperature and stress distribution that are directly related to defect formation in LMD technology. At the same time, the defect suppression method and the performance improvement method of the cladded layer in LMD technology are introduced. Finally, it is pointed out that the active selection of materials according to the required performance, combined with the controllable processing technology, to form the corresponding microstructure, and finally, to actively realize the expected function, is the future development direction of LMD technology.

Abstract:Laser cladding uses a high-energy laser beam as a heat source to rapidly melt and solidify the cladding material onto the substrate to form a high-performance coating. This technology provides an efficient and economical method to repair and remanufacture precision equipment such as engines and spacecraft. However, the inherent non-equilibrium solidification properties of laser cladding often lead to problems such as coating anisotropy, high porosity, and elemental segregation. Optimizing process parameters and heat treatment do not always eliminate these defects. Therefore, it is necessary to seek a more appropriate solution. Introducing laser remelting on the surface or between the layers of the coating to cause it to remelt and redistribute can refine the grain size, reduce defects, and improve the uniformity of the composition, thus enhancing the performance of the coating. This paper reviews and summarizes the application and development status of laser remelting technology in laser cladding and discusses it in terms of surface quality, hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance of the coating. It also identifies the potential of external field-assisted laser remelting technology in further optimizing coating performance. Finally, based on the review, suggestions are provided for selecting remelting parameters.

Abstract:Laser cladding and surface alloying are surface modification techniques employed to fabricate thin coating/layer with improved surface properties or to refurbish surface defects by forming highly resistant gradient coatings/layers on the substrate. High energy density and cooling rates make these techniques suitable to process a wide range of materials. In recent years, due to the development of high power lasers, improved controlling and delivery mechanisms have attracted extensive research in laser surface treatment. Researchers have analyzed various process factors to improve process performance. The experimental and theoretical studies show that the performance of laser cladding and surface alloying techniques can be enhanced significantly by the proper selection of input process parameters. This paper summarizes various research works carried out so far in the area of laser cladding and surface alloying of different materials and their applications. It reports the research outcomes of experimental and theoretical studies conducted to improve the process performance. A brief introduction of various laser surface treatment processes is also included. Besides these various problems, their solutions and trend for future works have also been discussed.

Abstract:In order to explore the influence in temperature field change on the cladding quality and substrate deformation during laser cladding, adopt the APDL parametrization design language in ANSYS finite element analysis software to establish the laser cladding process model and the cladding process. The dynamic simulation and the temperature field distribution during the simulation cooling process were carried out, and the experimental verification and comparison were carried out under the same process parameters. The results showed that the single-pass cladding layer has the best shape under the process parameters that laser power of 1800w, powder feeding capacity of 20g/min and scanning speed of 8mm/s. During the cladding simulation process, the temperature of the molten pool and the peak temperature of the time-course curve are basically constant, and the temperature field distribution takes on a steady-state distribution. After the cladding, the temperature of cladding layer diffuses to the both ends, the temperature field changes gradually decrease during the cooling process, and the temperature is in an unsteady state. As the cooling time increases, the temperature drop gradient gradually decreases. The temperature field cooling analysis is carried out under the same process parameters. The error between the experimental results and the simulation results is less than 10%, which is very consistent and has guiding significance for practical experiments.

Abstract:Titanium (Ti) and its alloys have been widely employed in aeronautical, petrochemical, and medical fields owing to their fascinating advantages in terms of their mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and so on. However, Ti and its alloys face many challenges, if they work in severe or more complex environments. The surface is always the origin of failure for Ti and its alloys in workpieces, which influences performance degradation and service life. To improve the properties and function, surface modification becomes the common process for Ti and its alloys. The present article reviews the technology and development of laser cladding on Ti and its alloys, according to the cladding technology, cladding materials, and coating function. Generally, the laser cladding parameters and auxiliary technology could influence the temperature distribution and elements diffusion in the molten pool, which basically determines the microstructure and properties. The matrix and reinforced phases play an important role in laser cladding coating, which can increase the hardness, strength, wear resistance, oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and so on. However, the excessive addition of reinforced phases or particles can deteriorate the ductility, and thus the balance between functional properties and basic properties should be considered during the design of the chemical composition of laser cladding coatings. In addition, the interface including the phase interface, layer interface, and substrate interface plays an important role in microstructure stability, thermal stability, chemical stability, and mechanical reliability. Therefore, the substrate state, the chemical composition of the laser cladding coating and substrate, the processing parameters, and the interface comprise the critical factors which influence the microstructure and properties of the laser cladding coating prepared. How to systematically optimize the influencing factors and obtain well-balanced performance are long-term research issues.

Abstract:Laser Cladding is one of the developing manufacturing techniques used for diverse applications such as coating, repairing and prototyping. Complex processing phenomena and the formation and growth of thin clad of few micrometres to millimetres range in most cases are yet to be fully understood. However, in recent past, several numerical models have been reported to get some understanding of physical, dynamic and metallurgical phenomena of this process. This article reviews the progress of numerical simulations spanning over three distinct stages of the process to model powder flow dynamics, melt pool and clad properties. For each stage, the governing equations, the effect of process variables and experimental validation techniques have been discussed. Specifically, we have outlined some of the underlying assumptions in the current numerical models which can act as pointers for further improvement of the existing numerical models. Authors recommend that numerical simulation results have to be complemented with experimental results to achieve better clad properties.

Abstract:Titanium and its alloys are restricted in the field of application. Laser cladding, as a kind of surface modification technique, is employed to fabricate coatings with improved wear resistance, high temperature oxidation resistance and good biocompatibility on titanium and its alloys. Apart from laser cladding process parameters, material selection is vital to obtain the improved properties mentioned above. In this paper, recent developments of different material system are summarized and the developments in laser cladding for functional coatings with high wear resistance, good corrosion and oxidation resistance, and better medical biocompatibility are reviewed. Besides, the existing problems and the corresponding solutions are discussed. Finally, the trend of development in the future is forecasted.

Abstract:In recent years, the industry has required critical parts with excellent high-temperature resistance, wear resis-tance, corrosion resistance, and other properties. Preparing high-performance coatings on part surfaces is considered an efficient and economical method. As a new surface treatment technology, extreme high-speed laser cladding (EHLA) has attracted increasing attention owing to its high cladding efficiency and rapid cooling rate. EHLA can maintain good metallurgical bonding between coating and substrate at low heat input. It can signif-icantly promote the refinement of microstructure and uniform composition distribution. In addition, optimiza-tion of EHLA parameters allows for control of coating thickness and inhibition of defect formation. This paper introduces the research progress of extreme high-speed laser cladding technology in detail from cladding process optimization, process simulations, material systems, and defect types. The setting of process parameters, the factors affecting the EHLA coating performance, and the formation mechanism of defects are also summarized.

Abstract:Laser cladding has gained increasing popularity both in industry and in academic research. This work describes an investigation of laser cladding of mild steel substrate with Colmonoy 88 nickel-based hardfacing powder. Emphasis is placed on the effect of the translation speed (TS) of the laser beam and the powder feed rate (PFR) on the physical microstructural qualities of the clad layer. The results on the profile of single clad pass, extent of dilution, surface hardness and the microstructure produced by different cladding conditions are presented and discussed, through which the optimum cladding parameters for maximum hardness of the clad material are identified.

Abstract:To avoid and eliminate cracks on the surface of a workpiece, it is very important to quantitatively analyse the temperature field, stress field, and flow field during the laser cladding process. This paper uses the finite element method to establish a multiphysics coupling model based on the laser cladding process of a disc laser. The thermophysical parameters of the base material ASTM 1045 and the powder material Fe60 are calculated by the CALPHAD method. In the modelling, the mutual influence between the light powder is considered but also the influence of the surface tension and buoyancy of the liquid metal in the molten pool on the flow of the molten pool and the dynamic change of the cladding layer morphology are considered. In the laser cladding process, the distribution and change law of the temperature field, flow field, and stress field are obtained. An infrared thermometer was used to measure the temperature during the cladding process, and a Zeiss-ƩIGMA HD scanning electron microscope was used to observe the outline of the cladding layer, which verified the accuracy of the mathematical model. The response surface model was established by the CCD method, and the influence law of the process parameters on the cladding layer was determined. The influence of laser power, beam radius, and scanning speed process parameters on the changes of temperature field, flow field, and stress field in the cladding process was analysed, providing an effective way to reduce residual stress.
