Abstract:Statistical physics has proven to be a very fruitful framework to describe phenomena outside the realm of traditional physics. The last years have witnessed the attempt by physicists to study collective phenomena emerging from the interactions of individuals as elementary units in social structures. Here we review the state of the art by focusing on a wide list of topics ranging from opinion, cultural and language dynamics to crowd behavior, hierarchy formation, human dynamics, social spreading. We highlight the connections between these problems and other, more traditional, topics of statistical physics. We also emphasize the comparison of model results with empirical data from social systems.

Abstract:This paper gives a short review of the history of statistical physics starting from D. Bernoulli's kinetic theory of gases in the 18th century until the recent new developments in nonequilibrium kinetic theory in the last decades of this century. The most important contributions of the great physicists Clausius, Maxwell and Boltzmann are sketched. It is shown how the reversibility and the recurrence paradox are resolved within Boltzmann's statistical interpretation of the second law of thermodynamics. An approach to classical and quantum statistical mechanics is outlined. Finally the progress in nonequilibrium kinetic theory in the second half of this century is sketched starting from the work of N.N. Bogolyubov in 1946 up to the progress made recently in understanding the diffusion processes in dense fluids using computer simulations and analytical methods.

Statistical Mechanics Approaches for Studying Temperature and Rate Effects in Multistable Systems

Abstract:Systems with a multistable energy landscape are widespread in physics, biophysics, technology, and materials science. They are strongly influenced by thermal fluctuations and external mechanical actions that can be applied at different rates, moving the system from equilibrium to non-equilibrium regimes. In this paper, we focus on a simple system involving a single breaking phenomenon to describe the various theoretical approaches used to study these problems. To begin with, we propose the exact solution at thermodynamic equilibrium based on the calculation of the partition function without approximations. We then introduce the technique of spin variables, which is able to simplify the treatment even for systems with a large number of coordinates. We then analyze the energy balance of the system to better understand its underlying physics. Finally, we introduce a technique based on transition state theory useful for studying the non-equilibrium dynamical regimes of these systems. This method is appropriate for the evaluation of rate effects and hysteresis loops. These approaches are developed for both the Helmholtz ensemble (prescribed extension) and the Gibbs ensemble (applied force) of statistical mechanics. The symmetry and duality of these two ensembles is discussed in depth. While these techniques are used here for a simple system with theoretical purposes, they can be applied to complex systems of interest for several physical, biophysical, and technological applications.

Abstract:The constituents of a complex system exchange information to function properly. Their signalling dynamics often leads to the appearance of emergent phenomena, such as phase transitions and collective behaviors. While information exchange has been widely modeled by means of distinct spreading processes -- such as continuous-time diffusion, random walks, synchronization and consensus -- on top of complex networks, a unified and physically-grounded framework to study information dynamics and gain insights about the macroscopic effects of microscopic interactions, is still eluding us. In this article, we present this framework in terms of a statistical field theory of information dynamics, unifying a range of dynamical processes governing the evolution of information on top of static or time varying structures. We show that information operators form a meaningful statistical ensemble and their superposition defines a density matrix that can be used for the analysis of complex dynamics. As a direct application, we show that the von Neumann entropy of the ensemble can be a measure of the functional diversity of complex systems, defined in terms of the functional differentiation of higher-order interactions among their components. Our results suggest that modularity and hierarchy, two key features of empirical complex systems -- from the human brain to social and urban networks -- play a key role to guarantee functional diversity and, consequently, are favored.

Optimization of random cost functions and statistical physics

Abstract:This is the text of my report presented at the 29th Solvay Conference on Physics on `The Structure and Dynamics of Disordered Systems' held in Bruxelles from October 19 to 21, 2023. I consider the problem of minimizing a random energy function $H(\sigma)$, where $\sigma$ is an $N$-dimensional vector, in the high-dimensional regime $N\gg 1$. Using as a reference point a 1986 paper by Fu and Anderson, I take stock of the progress on this question over the last 40 years. In particular, I focus on the influence and ramifications of ideas originating from statistical physics. My own conclusion is that several of the most fundamental questions in this area (which in 1986 were barely formulated) have now received mathematically rigorous answers, at least in simple -- yet highly nontrivial -- settings. Instrumental to this spectacular progress was the dialogue between different research communities: physics, computer science, mathematics.

Abstract:This article is written in memory of Pierre Hohenberg with appreciation for his deep commitment to the basic principles of theoretical physics. I summarize recent developments in the theory of dislocation-enabled deformation of crystalline solids. This topic is especially appropriate for the Journal of Statistical Physics because materials scientists, for decades, have asserted that statistical thermodynamics is not applicable to dislocations. By use of simple, first-principles analyses and comparisons with experimental data, I argue that these people have been wrong, and that this field should now be revitalized because of its wide-ranging intellectual and technological importance.

Abstract:Computational methods are indispensable to study the quantum dynamics of relativistic light-matter interactions in parameter regimes where analytical methods become inapplicable. We present numerical methods for solving the time-dependent Dirac equation and the time-dependent Klein-Gordon equation and their implementation on high performance graphics cards. These methods allow us to study tunneling from hydrogen-like highly charged ions in strong laser fields and Kapitza-Dirac scattering in the relativistic regime.

Abstract:In the past 15 years, statistical physics has been successful as a framework for modelling complex networks. On the theoretical side, this approach has unveiled a variety of physical phenomena, such as the emergence of mixed distributions and ensemble non-equivalence, that are observed in heterogeneous networks but not in homogeneous systems. At the same time, thanks to the deep connection between the principle of maximum entropy and information theory, statistical physics has led to the definition of null models for networks that reproduce features of real-world systems but that are otherwise as random as possible. We review here the statistical physics approach and the null models for complex networks, focusing in particular on analytical frameworks that reproduce local network features. We show how these models have been used to detect statistically significant structural patterns in real-world networks and to reconstruct the network structure in cases of incomplete information. We further survey the statistical physics models that reproduce more complex, semilocal network features using Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling, as well as models of generalized network structures, such as multiplex networks, interacting networks and simplicial complexes.

Abstract:Diffusion Model for Relativistic Heavy‐Ion Collisions Relativistic heavy‐ion collisions are a versatile tool to study the partial approach of a quantum many‐body system towards statistical equilibrium. In article number 2300307, Johannes Hölck and Georg Wolschin present an explicit and rigorous derivation of the stochastic Fokker–Planck equation for the momentum distribution function of produced charged hadrons in longitudinal and transverse rapidities, thus placing the relativistic diffusion model on a firm statistical foundation. The model is used to analyse Pb–Pb collisions at energies reached at the Large Hadron Collider LHC. Detailed comparisons with data from the ATLAS and ALICE collaborations in transverse‐momentum and pseudorapidity space are given.

Abstract:Identifying the relevant degrees of freedom in a complex physical system is a key stage in developing effective theories in and out of equilibrium. The celebrated renormalization group provides a framework for this, but its practical execution in unfamiliar systems is fraught with ad hoc choices, whereas machine learning approaches, though promising, lack formal interpretability. Here we present an algorithm employing state-of-the-art results in machine-learning-based estimation of information-theoretic quantities, overcoming these challenges, and use this advance to develop a new paradigm in identifying the most relevant operators describing properties of the system. We demonstrate this on an interacting model, where the emergent degrees of freedom are qualitatively different from the microscopic constituents. Our results push the boundary of formally interpretable applications of machine learning, conceptually paving the way toward automated theory building.
A deductive statistical mechanics approach for granular matter

Abstract:We introduce a deductive statistical mechanics approach for granular materials which is formally built from few realistic physical assumptions. The main finding is an universal behavior for the distribution of the density fluctuations. Such a distribution is the equivalent of the Maxwell-Boltzmann's distribution in the kinetic theory of gasses. The comparison with a very extensive set of experimental and simulation data for packings of monosized spherical grains, reveals a remarkably good quantitative agreement with the theoretical predictions for the density fluctuations both at the grain level and at the global system level. Such agreement is robust over a broad range of packing fractions and it is observed in several distinct systems prepared by using different methods. The equilibrium distributions are characterized by only one parameter ($k$) which is a quantity very sensitive to changes in the structural organization. The thermodynamical equivalent of $k$ and its relation with the `granular temperature' are also discussed.

Abstract:Over the years, the Statistical Physics activity in Mexico has increased from almost zero in the early 1960s to an international level today. It began in the later part of that decade with a small group at the Instituto Mexicano del Petróleo (IMP) and then grew at the Metropolitan University (UAM), the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and the Center for Advanced Studies (Cinvestav), all of them in Mexico City. Later it expanded to Puebla and San Luis Potosí, and the 1990s saw a significant growth across the country, with young groups forming in Morelos, Baja California Norte, Guanajuato, Sonora, Estado de México, Jalisco, Nuevo León, Veracruz, Querétaro, and Yucatán. Several of the papers presented in this edition come from these groups.

Abstract:We study the transformation of the statistical mechanics of N particles to the statistical mechanics of fields, that are the collective coordinates, describing the system. We give an explicit expression for the functional Fourier transform of the Jacobian of the transformation from particle to collective coordinate and derive the Fokker-Planck equation in terms of the collective coordinates. Simple approximations, leading to Debye-Huckel theory and to the hard sphere Percus-Yevick equation are discussed.
