Abstract:This paper introduces a supersonic aircraft design model developed in a multidisciplinary design analysis and optimization (MDAO) environment. Lowto mediumfidelity methods are applied to the conceptual design model. A family of different classes supersonic aircraft are designed with similar general layout, including a single seat supersonic demonstrator, a 10-passenger supersonic business jet and a 50-seat supersonic airliner. These concepts prove the feasibility of low-boom low-drag supersonic transport designs in a multidisciplinary perspective. There are some challenges to balance the volume with packaging and control requirements. The low-boom design for configuration with nacelles are also very challenging.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Efforts to develop the next generation of aircraft with ever-increasing levels of performance – higher, farther, faster, cheaper – face great technical challenges. One of these technical challenges is to reduce structural weight of the aircraft. Another is to look to aircraft configurations that have been unrealizable to date. Both of these paths can lead to a rigid flex coupling phenomenon that can result in anything from poor flying qualities to the loss of an aircraft due to flutter. This has led to a need to develop an integrated flight and aeroelastic control capability where structural dynamics are included in the synthesis of flight control laws. Studies have indicated that the application of an integrated flight and aeroelastic control approach to a SensorCraft high-altitude long-endurance vehicle would provide substantial performance improvement (1,2) . Better flying qualities and an expanded flight envelope through multi-flutter mode control are two areas of improvement afforded by integrated flight and aeroelastic control. By itself, multi-flutter mode control transforms the flutter barrier from a point of catastrophic structural failure to a benign region of flight. This paper discusses the history and issues associated with the development of such an integrated flight and aeroelastic control system for the X-56A aircraft.
Studies on Coupled Flight Dynamics and Aeroelasticity of a Prandtlplane Configuration

Abstract:The PrandtlPlane aircraft has been recently considered as a possible candidate to foster the ambition of a greener aviation. Despite the relevant amount of research carried out in the last years, several aspects of this novel configuration still need further insight to pave the way to future applications. Among them, the coupled flight-dynamic and aeroelastic response is addressed in this work by means of a dedicated in-house framework. For the evaluation of the aerodynamic forces, an enhanced Doublet Lattice Method, able to take into account terms typically neglected by classic formulations, is employed. First, flight-dynamic aspects are considered, showing how effects of interaction between Short Period or Dutch Roll with elastic modes remarkably deteriorate the flying qualities. Then, focus is on the aeroelastic stability of the aircraft. As observed also in previous literature efforts on this configuration, flutter onset is considerably different when considering the aircraft being free in the air or fixed in space. Thanks to the adopted formulation it is shown how, for this PrandtlPlane, the aerodynamic coupling of elastic and rigid modes has a beneficial effect on flutter onset. However, the different modal properties, consequence of the diverse boundary conditions, when switching from fixed-in-space to free-flying aircraft, also play a relevant role in determining the occurrence of flutter. Whereas for the longitudinal case both effects contribute increasing flutter speed, for the lateral-directional case the variation in modal properties has a detrimental and dominating effect, leading to a flutter speedwell within the flight <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://envelope.Finally" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>,the work discusses the contributions of the additional terms modeled by the enhanced Doublet Lattice Method, showing how they induce a considerable effect when modeling the flight dynamics of the flexible aircraft.

Abstract:This work investigates the effects of control input time delay on closed-loop transonic computational aeroelastic analysis. Control input time delays are becoming critical as the demand for high frequency control actions is increasing. The flow in transonic conditions exhibits strong nonlinearities which require accurate physical modeling techniques, in turn resulting in large dimensional systems that are computationally costly to solve. A unified framework is demonstrated for the robust and efficient generation of reduced order models. Once generated, the reduced order model is employed for the flutter boundary search, and excellent agreement with the large order coupled model is demonstrated. The aero-servo-elastic reduced order model is then exploited to design a feedback control law, which is implemented in the fully coupled computational fluid/structural dynamics solver. As expected, the controller effectiveness is found to degrade for increasing time delay, up to a critical value where the controller fails to suppress flutter. It is shown that a controller for a time-delay system may be designed using the same aero-servo-elastic reduced order model, incurring in no extra costs or complications. The new controller is found to achieve excellent flutter suppression characteristics. The aero-servo-elastic reduced order model may also be used to identify, for a given feedback controller, the critical value of control input time delay at which the closed-loop aero-servo-elastic system loses its stability. The test cases are for a two-dimensional pitch-plunge aerofoil section and the AGARD 445.6 wing modified with a trailing-edge control surface.

Abstract:The impact of shock formation and vortex dynamics on airfoil flutter in the transonic regime is investigated through a series of two-dimensional time-accurate simulations of a sinusoidally pitching airfoil at a Reynolds number of 10,000. To gain insight into transonic flutter in the fully nonlinear regime, an energy-based approach that employs prescribed kinematics is utilized. Flutter stability boundaries are identified as a function of the Mach number and the reduced velocity, the latter of which is a surrogate for structural stiffness or flight speed. The results show a subcritical instability near Mach numbers of [Formula: see text] for a range of oscillation frequencies. Additionally, three shock-induced mechanisms are identified that influence the transfer of energy from the flow to the airfoil. The primary mechanism is flow separation triggered by the generation of a lambda shock. The influence of the lambda-shock dynamics on airfoil flow separation is determined for different Mach numbers, providing insight into the well-known “transonic dip” observed in flutter boundaries.

Abstract:This paper presents a series of transonic airfoils, designed using differing optimization approaches, which are evaluated over a wide range of operating conditions using global aerodynamic performance maps.Global drag rise boundaries, which are identified, modelled and directly optimized during design, include drag divergence and onset of wave drag.The AIAA ADODG Case 2 airfoil optimization case is used to compare the results of the new global performance design approach with conventional multi-point optimization.The impact of alternative design formulations is presented in terms of both global performance maps and selected drag rise characteristics around the Case 2 design condition.In particular, the trade-off between drag divergence and the preceding onset of wave drag is discussed.The new approach addresses the issue of early excessive drag creep, which is typically encountered for optimization focused on a narrow range of operating conditions.The study provides some further insights into how a well posed optimization formulation for transonic airfoil design can potentially be established.

Abstract:The present work conducts a multifidelity aerodynamic design of a medium-range commercial aircraft wing featuring hybrid laminar flow control (HLFC) technology. The design was performed to investigate the capabilities of the HLFC, considering the entire design flight envelope, low-speed performance requirements, and various potential mission scenarios. A combination of medium-fidelity aerodynamic design tools for laminar flow control using MSES-COCO-LILO, CFD RANS for high-lift cases, the quasi-three-dimensional for database generations, and SUAVE for mission analysis were used to design and assess aircraft’s performance with the HLFC wing. Studies of the design objective demonstrated a conflict between friction and compressibility drag that strongly affects the design objective function and the wing performance at various off-design conditions. A strong dependence of HLFC on flight conditions was observed to indicate technology performance limitations and a tradeoff between airplane emissions, range, and costs. Finally, a comparison of medium- and low-fidelity performance results showed deviations in the design fuel burn of 4%, a minimum possible harmonic range difference of 3%, and direct operating costs of 2%. The outcome suggests the need for better compressibility and parasite drag models for early design stages to accurately model the HLFC technology without introducing complicated methods at the first sizing steps.

Abstract:The development of novel aircraft concepts and propulsion technologies requires up-to-date physics-based methods and tools for conceptual aircraft design. In this context, a simulation model for the take-off manoeuvre is proposed in this article, to be employed in the conceptual design phase for aircraft whether of traditional or innovative configuration. The model is capable of evaluating the longitudinal dynamics, both translational and rotational, of the aircraft considered as a rigid body, and influenced by the aerodynamic effects introduced by the presence of the ground. The ground effect, indeed, induces variations in the aerodynamic forces depending on the distance and the attitude of the lifting surfaces from the ground, which may significantly influence the aeromechanical characteristics of the aircraft during the evolution of the take-off manoeuvre. The simulation model is based on the numerical solution of the equations of the dynamics of the rigid aircraft in the longitudinal plane and integrates a vortex lattice aerodynamic solver to evaluate the aerodynamic and aeromechanical characteristics of the aircraft considering the ground effect in each time-step. The proposed approach is configuration independent, as it can model the geometry, evaluate the aerodynamics, and simulate the dynamics of aircraft with any lifting architecture; furthermore, the simulation model is fast and flexible, making it effective for the conceptual phase of aircraft design. The paper proposes the description of the take-off manoeuvre of two aircraft with different airframes: one with a conventional tube-and-wing architecture and one with a box-wing lifting system. The results proposed highlight the potential of the simulation model to detect aeromechanic and dynamic differences during the development of the manoeuvre for different aircraft configurations, and to assess the significance of considering ground effect aerodynamics.

Abstract:Recent research has focused on the design of aircraft that provide significant reductions in emissions, noise, and fuel usage. One of the strategies to increase fuel efficiency is to leverage the potential structural weight saving available by using novel configurations such as the truss-braced wing. The Boeing Company recently tested the Subsonic Ultra-Green Aircraft Research Truss-Braced Wing wind-tunnel model in the NASA Langley Research Center Transonic Dynamics Tunnel. This test resulted in a wealth of accelerometer data that are indicative of the dynamic behavior of the model near flutter onset. For the truss-braced wing model test, the flutter onset was preceded by a large Mach number/dynamic pressure area in which the model displayed wing/engine nacelle aeroelastic limit-cycle oscillation. This paper analyzes those limit-cycle oscillation data to provide additional insights into the aeroelastic behavior of the model. Spectral analyses indicate the coalescence of several wing modes into a single-frequency limit-cycle oscillation. The mapping of limit-cycle oscillation at that frequency at progressive amplitudes indicates a substantial variation in onset with angle of attack. Spectral analysis also provides evidence of nonlinearity in both the aerodynamic and structural dynamics.

Abstract:This research paper presents a comprehensive study focused on optimizing innovative tailplane configurations for transport jet aircraft. This study aims to enhance the aerodynamics of the aircraft's rear end by introducing a novel tail arrangement. The ultimate goal is to reduce the size of the horizontal empennage, which will have a positive impact on aircraft fuel efficiency. To fulfil its objectives, this work develops a systematic approach, integrating advanced methodologies such as the Design of Experiments and Response Surface Models for both aerodynamics and structural disciplines. By levering response surfaces methodology, the aerostructural optimization has been performed towards a size reduction of the horizontal tail. Results indicate a potential 9% reduction in the tailplane reference area, which could result in enhanced aerodynamic performance and weight saving. This target would only be achievable if the innovative design includes a Leading Edge Extension device to maintain the stability and handling characteristics of a conventional reference aircraft. The impact of the innovative optimized tail arrangement developed in this study at the aircraft level resulted in a 1% reduction in block fuel for a mission range of approximately 3,400 nautical miles for a 180-seat capacity jet aircraft (similar to A320neo). Furthermore, from an industrial perspective, this paper also demonstrates how an automated workflow assists with CAD modeling, mesh creation, simulation execution, and surrogate models to accelerate complex multidisciplinary optimization processes, thereby reducing the time and costs associated with the development of a new aircraft configuration.

The ultra-high aspect ratio wings (UHARW) configuration is one key enabling strategy for improving aircraft aerodynamic efficiency and reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Unconventional aircraft configurations and novel airframe technologies are required to address the large bending moment, and shear stresses in the UHARW structure. This paper considers two promising unconventional configurations suitable for adopting UHARW design, including strut-braced-wing (SBW) and twin-fuselage (TF), equipped with novel airframe technologies, i.e., active flow control, active load alleviation, and novel airframe structures and materials. Three typical missions, including short-range (SR), medium-range (MR), and long-range (LR), are considered for aircraft design. A conceptual design and performance analysis framework for the SBW and TF configurations with novel airframe technologies is developed in this paper by integrating and improving several methods and tools. According to the mission profile and top-level requirements proposed for each mission, an SBW and a TF configuration are designed for each class of aircraft. A comparative study is carried out to determine the best-in-class configuration of the corresponding mission. The results showed that the TF configuration has a better wing weight reduction effect than the SBW configuration, and the MR-TF and LR-TF aircraft have lower takeoff weight and fuel weight than the SBW aircraft for the same mission. However, due to the adjustment of the dimensions for the cabin arrangement of the SR-TF aircraft, the SBW configuration outperforms the TF configuration in this mission.
Aerodynamic Optimization of an Adaptive Flap for Next-Generation Green Aircraft

Abstract:Adaptive, morphing flaps are taking ever-increasing attention in civil aviation thanks to the expected benefits this technology can bring at the aircraft level in terms of high-lift performance improvement and related fuel burnt reduction per flight. Relying upon morphing capabilities, it is possible to fix a unique setting for the flap and adapt the flap shape to match the aerodynamic requirements for take-off or landing. The proper morphed shapes can assure better high-lift performances than those achievable by referring to a conventional flap. Moreover, standing the unique flap setting for take-off and landing, a dramatic simplification of the flap deployment systems may be achieved. As a consequence of this simplification, the deployment system can be fully hosted in the wing, thus avoiding under-wing nacelles with significantly better aerodynamics and fuel consumption. The first step for a rational design of an adaptive flap consists in defining the target morphed shapes and the unique optimal flap setting in the take-off and landing phases. In this work, aerodynamic optimization analyses are carried out to determine the best flap setting and related morphed shapes in compliance with the take-off and landing requirements of a reference civil transport aircraft. Four different initial conditions are adopted to avoid the optimization falling into local optima, thus obtaining four groups of optimal candidate configurations. After comparing each candidate's performance through 2D and 3D simulations, the optimal configuration has been selected. 2D simulations show that the optimal configuration is characterized by a maximum lift increase of 31.92% in take-off and 9.04% in landing. According to 3D simulations, the rise in maximum lift equals 22.26% in take-off and 3.50% in landing. Numerical results are finally verified through wind tunnel tests, and the aerodynamic mechanism behind the obtained improvements is explained by carefully analyzing the flow field around the flap.
Aeroelastic Analysis of Transonic Flutter with CFD-Based Reduced-Order Model

Abstract:The current work is concerned with studying processes for constructing reduced-order models capable of performing transonic aeroelastic stability analyses in the frequency domain based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. The CFD calculations are based on the Euler equations, and the code uses a finite volume formulation for general unstructured grids. A centered spatial discretization with added artificial dissipation is used, and an explicit Runge-Kutta time marching method is employed. The dynamic system considered in the present work is a NACA 0012 airfoil-based typical section in the transonic regime. Unsteady calculations are performed for mode-by-mode and simultaneous excitation approaches, the latter defined by orthogonal Walsh functions. System identification techniques are employed to allow the splitting of the aerodynamic coefficient time histories into the contribution of each individual mode to the corresponding aerodynamic transfer functions. Generalized unsteady aerodynamic forces are approximated by a rational transfer function in the Laplace domain, in which nonlinear parameters are selected through a non-gradient optimization process. Different types of interpolating polynomials are tested and the results are compared. Results show that the proposed procedure can reproduce literature aeroelastic analysis data with a single unsteady CFD run.

Abstract:In the age of globalization, commercial aviation plays a central role in maintaining our international connectivity by providing fast air transport services for passengers and freight. However, the upper limit of the aircraft flight envelope, i.e., its operational limit in the high-speed (transonic) regime, is usually fixed by the occurrence of transonic aeroelastic effects. These harmful structural vibrations are associated with an aerodynamic instability called transonic buffet. It refers to shock wave oscillations occurring on the aircraft wings, which induce unsteady aerodynamic loads acting on the wing structure. Since the structural response can cause severe structural damage endangering flight safety, the aviation industry is highly interested in suppressing transonic buffet to extend the flight envelope to higher aircraft speeds. In this contribution, we demonstrate experimentally that the application of porous trailing edges substantially attenuates the buffet phenomenon. Since porous trailing edges have the additional benefit of reducing acoustic aircraft emissions, they could prospectively provide faster air transport with reduced noise emissions.
Conceptual design and integration of a propulsion system for a supersonic transport aircraft

Abstract:Despite 50 years of technological advancement since the inception of Concorde, research on supersonic passenger aircraft has only recently resulted in design and flight test of several small 12 to 55-passenger business jets with supersonic cruises between Mach 1.2 and 2.2. Analytical research designs of larger 300-passenger aircraft have been conducted only to speeds of Mach 2.0 and 2.2, mainly avoiding moving beyond turbojet propulsion. This research extends on an earlier multifactor regression sizing study to determine in greater design detail whether the configuration of a 200-passenger Mach 3.0 aircraft is feasible using extant technology. This research article is the second part of two and covers a suitable and cost-effective propulsion system for the executive supersonic passenger aircraft. Through this high-speed design, the research examines modern propulsion technology and the performance advancements it affords through higher efficiencies, higher metallurgical thermal limits, variable cycle engines and variable stator technology. The analysis was conducted on several potential propulsion systems using GasTurb software to obtain engine performance data. The performance results led to a combined cycle turbofan–ramjet engine as being the engine that could yield the most extensive range for the aircraft. Further investigation is needed on aircraft noise, engine emissions, the accuracy of the thrust-critical lift-to-drag ratios and the aeroelastic effects that can be closely coupled to noise and performance.

Abstract:Within the transonic regime, the aeroelastic problems exhibit many unique characteristics compared with subsonic and supersonic cases. Although a lot of research has been carried out in this field, the underlying mechanisms of these complex phenomena are not clearly understood yet, resulting in a challenge in the design and use of modern aircraft. This review summarizes the recent investigations on nonclassical transonic aeroelastic problems, including transonic buzz, reduction of transonic buffet onset, transonic buffeting response and frequency lock-in phenomenon in transonic buffet flow. After introducing the research methods in unsteady aerodynamics and aeroelastic problems, the dynamical characteristics as well as the physical mechanisms of these phenomena are discussed from the perspective of the fluid mode. In the framework of the ROM (reduced order model) -based model, the dominant fluid mode (or the eigenvalue) and its coupling process with the structural model can be clearly captured. The flow nonlinearity was believed to be the cause of the complexity of transonic aeroelasticity. In fact, this review indicates that the complexity lies in the decrease of the flow stability in the transonic regime. In this condition, the fluid mode becomes a principal part of the coupling process, which results in the instability of the fluid mode itself or the structural mode, and thus, it is the root cause of different transonic aeroelastic phenomena.

Abstract:A reduction in the structural weight and climate-relevant emissions of future transport aircraft can be realized through active gust load alleviation, limiting the peak aerodynamic loads experienced in flight. Two fluidic concepts, surface and Coandă jets, offer promising solutions. The surface jet induces a separated flow region on the wing’s suction side near the trailing edge, while the Coandă jet utilizes tangential blowing over a rounded trailing edge to make use of the Coandă effect for direct circulation control. This study investigates these fluidic actuation concepts using two-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes simulations on a supercritical airfoil to alleviate gust-induced lift increases. Results reveal that fluidic concepts can surpass the load reduction capability of a trailing edge flap. Notably, the Coandă-type design, while more efficient, exhibits limited control authority compared to surface jet, achieving maximum gust load reductions of 40% versus 70% for surface jet. Optimizing the temporal deployment of the surface jet leads to increased peak lift reduction. Even under challenging conditions with reduced gust anticipation time and actuator placement near the wing tip with a reduced chord length, the surface jet maintains consistent performance and therefore offers a promising solution for active gust load alleviation on future aircraft.

Abstract:A unified aeroelastic model developed towards investigating the flutter instability and subcritical aeroelastic response to a sharp-edged gust load in the compressible subsonic flight speed range is presented. The aircraft wing is modeled as an anisotropic composite thin-walled beam featuring circumferentially asymmetric stiffness lay-up which generates preferred elastic couplings. A number of non-classical effects such as transverse shear, warping restraint, and the 3-D strain effects are incorporated in the structural model. The unsteady aerodynamic loads in subsonic flow are based on 2-D indicial functions in conjunction with aerodynamic strip theory extended to a 3-D wing model. The numerical results reveal that elastic tailoring and warping restraint play a significant role on the flutter instability and dynamic response of composite aircraft wings.

Abstract:The annular lift fan aircraft is a new conceptual vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) vehicle for which the tremendous momentum drag and pitching moment in transition is a big problem to overcome. In this study, different strut configurations and transitional strategies for the annular lift fan aircraft are numerically investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. The results show that the longitudinal struts can significantly reduce the oscillations of lift and drag caused by the interactions between the radial struts and the incoming flow and that the gliding transition strategy reduces the total required thrust by 47% without the need for a skirt. This gliding transition is also faster, taking only about 20 seconds to complete because part of the thrust can be used for the forward acceleration. (C) 2021 American Society of Civil Engineers.
