Abstract:Nitrogen (N) fertilizer application and atmospheric wet deposition have led to excessive N input into the soil and nitrate leaching into groundwater, which has become a widespread environmental concern. Plants serve as key participants in the soil N cycle. In this review, we critically examine recent advances and knowledge gaps with respect to the role of plants on N migration and transformation in plant-soil systems. The key aspects regarding the influence mechanism and interdependent relationships among plant roots, plant metabolism, plant root exudates, and rhizosphere microbes on N migration and transformation are summarized. Our review reveals that there is a plethora of information regarding the influence of microorganisms on the migration and transformation of N; there is limited knowledge on the effects of different plant root characteristics and root exudates on nitrogen transport and transformation. There are major knowledge gaps regarding quantitative pathways of N migration and transformation by deep-rooted plants to abate negative environmental impacts caused by excess N leaching as well. Environmental stresses, particularly the comprehensive influence of multiple environmental factors on plant-soil systems, need to be further researched to more effectively manage soil and plants.
