Abstract:Abstract. We offer a view of the Antarctic sea ice cover from lidar (ICESat-2) and radar (CryoSat-2) altimetry, with retrievals of freeboard, snow depth, and ice thickness that span an 8-month winter between 1 April and 16 November 2019. Snow depths are from freeboard differences. The multiyear ice observed in the West Weddell sector is the thickest, with a mean sector thickness > 2 m. The thinnest ice is found near polynyas (Ross Sea and Ronne Ice Shelf) where new ice areas are exported seaward and entrained in the surrounding ice cover. For all months, the results suggest that ∼ 65 %–70 % of the total freeboard is comprised of snow. The remarkable mechanical convergence in coastal Amundsen Sea, associated with onshore winds, was captured by ICESat-2 and CryoSat-2. We observe a corresponding correlated increase in freeboards, snow depth, and ice thickness. While the spatial patterns in the freeboard, snow depth, and thickness composites are as expected, the observed seasonality in these variables is rather weak. This most likely results from competing processes (snowfall, snow redistribution, snow and ice formation, ice deformation, and basal growth and melt) that contribute to uncorrelated changes in the total and radar freeboards. Evidence points to biases in CryoSat-2 estimates of ice freeboard of at least a few centimeters from high salinity snow (> 10) in the basal layer resulting in lower or higher snow depth and ice thickness retrievals, although the extent of these areas cannot be established in the current data set. Adjusting CryoSat-2 freeboards by 3–6 cm gives a circumpolar ice volume of 17 900–15 600 km3 in October, for an average thickness of ∼ 1.29–1.13 m. Validation of Antarctic sea ice parameters remains a challenge, as there are no seasonally and regionally diverse data sets that could be used to assess these large-scale satellite retrievals.

Abstract:In the summer of 2020, ESA changed the orbit of CryoSat‐2 to align periodically with NASA's ICESat‐2 mission, a campaign known as CRYO2ICE, which allows for near‐coincident CryoSat‐2 and ICESat‐2 observations in space and time over the Arctic until summer 2022, where the CRYO2ICE Antarctic campaign was initiated. This study investigates the Arctic CRYO2ICE radar and laser freeboards acquired by CryoSat‐2 and ICESat‐2, respectively, during the winter seasons of 2020–2022, and derives snow depths from their differences along the orbits. Along‐track snow depth observations can provide high‐resolution snow depth distributions which are vital for air‐ice‐ocean heat and momentum transfer, understanding light transmission, and snow‐ice‐interactions. Generally, ICESat‐2 is backscattered at a surface above the elevation of the CryoSat‐2 signal. CRYO2ICE snow depths are thinner than the daily model‐ or passive‐microwave‐based snow depth composites used for comparison, with differences being most pronounced in the Atlantic and Pacific Arctic. Satellite‐derived and model‐based snow estimates show similar seasonal accumulation over first‐year ice, but CRYO2ICE has limited seasonal accumulation over multi‐year ice which is linked to a slow increase in ICESat‐2, and to some extent CryoSat‐2, freeboards. We present a first estimation of spaceborne along‐track snow depth estimates with average uncertainty of 10–11 ± 2–3 cm for 7‐km segments, with random and systematic contributions of 7 and 4 cm. These observations show the potential for along‐track dual‐frequency observations of snow depth from the future Copernicus mission CRISTAL; but they also highlight uncertainties in radar penetration and the correlation length scales of snow topography that still require further research.

Abstract:The application of diffusion theory and Monte Carlo lidar radiative transfer simulations presented in Part I of this series of study suggests that snow depth can be derived from the first-, second- and third-order moments of the lidar backscattering pathlength distribution. These methods are now applied to the satellite ICESat-2 lidar measurements over the Arctic sea ice and land surfaces of Northern Hemisphere. Over the Arctic sea ice, the ICESat-2 retrieved snow depths agree well with co-located IceBridge snow radar measured values with a root-mean-square (RMS) difference of 7.8 cm or 29.2% of the mean snow depth. The terrestrial snow depths derived from ICESat-2 show drastic spatial variation of the snowpack along ICESat-2 ground tracks over the Northern Hemisphere, which are consistent with the University of Arizona (UA) and Canadian Meteorological Centre (CMC) gridded daily snow products. The RMS difference in snow depths between ICESat-2 and UA gridded daily snow products is 14 cm, or 28% of the mean UA snow depth. To better understand these results, we also discuss the possible sources of errors in ICESat-2 derived snow depths, including surface roughness within the laser footprint, atmospheric forward scattering, solar background noise, and detector dark current. Simulation results indicate that the snow depth errors would be less than 5 cm if the standard deviation of pulse spreading due to surface roughness is within 50 cm. Our results demonstrate that the ICESat-2 lidar measurements can be used to reliably derive snow depth, which is a critical geophysical parameter for cryosphere studies including sea ice thickness estimation and also provides important constraints in the modeling of terrestrial hydrological processes.

Abstract:Snow is a crucial element in the Earth’s system, but snow depth and mass are very challenging to be measured globally. Here, we provide the theoretical foundation for deriving snow depth directly from space-borne lidar (ICESat-2) snow multiple scattering measurements for the first time. First, based on the Monte Carlo lidar radiative transfer simulations of ICESat-2 measurements of 532-nm laser light propagation in snow, we find that the lidar backscattering path length follows Gamma distribution. Next, we derive three simple analytical equations to compute snow depth from the average, second-, and third-order moments of the distribution. As a preliminary application, these relations are then used to retrieve snow depth over the Antarctic ice sheet and the Arctic sea ice using the ICESat-2 lidar multiple scattering measurements. The robustness of this snow depth technique is demonstrated by the agreement of snow depth computed from the three derived relations using both modeled data and ICESat-2 observations.

Abstract:Year-round snow cover is a characteristic of the entire Antarctic sea ice cover, which has significant implications for the energy and mass budgets of sea ice, e.g., by preventing surface melt in summer and enhancing sea ice growth through extensive snow ice formation. However, substantial observational gaps in the seasonal cycle of Antarctic sea ice and its snow cover limit the understanding of important processes in the ice-covered Southern Ocean. They also introduce large uncertainties in satellite remote sensing applications and climate studies.

Abstract:AbstractArctic sea ice is a critical component in the global climate system. It affects the climate system by radiating incident heat back into space and regulating ocean-atmosphere heat and momentum. Satellite altimetry such as CryoSat-2 serves as the primary approach for observing sea ice thickness. Nevertheless, the thickness retrieval with CryoSat-2 mainly depends on the height of the ice surface above the sea level, which leads to significant uncertainties over thin ice regimes. The sea ice at the north of Greenland is considered one of the oldest and thickest in the Arctic. However, during late February - early March 2018, a polynya formed north to Greenland due to extra strong southern winds. We focus on the retrieval of sea ice thickness and snow conditions with CryoSat-2 and SMOS during the formation of the polynya. Specifically, we investigate the uncertainty of CryoSat-2 and carry out inter- comparison of sea ice thickness retrieval with SMOS and CryoSat-2/SMOS synergy. Besides, further discussion of retrieval with CryoSat-2 is provided for such scenarios where the mélange of thick ice and newly formed thin ice is present.
Estimating Arctic Sea Ice Thickness with CryoSat-2 Altimetry Data Using the Least Squares Adjustment Method

Abstract:Satellite altimeters can be used to derive long-term and large-scale sea ice thickness changes. Sea ice thickness retrieval is based on measurements of freeboard, and the conversion of freeboard to thickness requires knowledge of the snow depth and snow, sea ice, and sea water densities. However, these parameters are difficult to be observed concurrently with altimeter measurements. The uncertainties in these parameters inevitably cause uncertainties in sea ice thickness estimations. This paper introduces a new method based on least squares adjustment (LSA) to estimate Arctic sea ice thickness with CryoSat-2 measurements. A model between the sea ice freeboard and thickness is established within a 5 km × 5 km grid, and the model coefficients and sea ice thickness are calculated using the LSA method. Based on the newly developed method, we are able to derive estimates of the Arctic sea ice thickness for 2010 through 2019 using CryoSat-2 altimetry data. Spatial and temporal variations of the Arctic sea ice thickness are analyzed, and comparisons between sea ice thickness estimates using the LSA method and three CryoSat-2 sea ice thickness products (Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling (CPOM), and NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre (GSFC)) are performed for the 2018–2019 Arctic sea ice growth season. The overall differences of sea ice thickness estimated in this study between AWI, CPOM, and GSFC are 0.025 ± 0.640 m, 0.143 ± 0.640 m, and −0.274 ± 0.628 m, respectively. Large differences between the LSA and three products tend to appear in areas covered with thin ice due to the limited accuracy of CryoSat-2 over thin ice. Spatiotemporally coincident Operation IceBridge (OIB) thickness values are also used for validation. Good agreement with a difference of 0.065 ± 0.187 m is found between our estimates and the OIB results.

Abstract:Applying ICESat-2 and CryoSat-2 freeboards, the Arctic snow depth (ISCS) was obtained from October 2018 to April 2022. The results were assessed using Operation Ice Bridge (OIB) and Multidisciplinary Drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) in situ observations and compared with frequently used remote sensing (AMSR-E/AMSR2), climatology (modified W99 snow climatology data; MW99), and modelled (Pan-Arctic Ice Ocean Modelling and Assimilation Systems; PIOMAS) snow products. The ISCS snow depth exhibited high correlations ( r = 0.67) and small mean bias (0.01 ± 0.06 m) against OIB results. We found good correlations (statistically significant) between MOSAiC and all snow depth products, except for MW99. Mean and absolute biases between ISCS and MOSAiC in situ observations were 0.01 ± 0.06 and 0.04 ± 0.04 m, respectively. The ISCS revealed clear spatial distribution from the Canadian Arctic Archipelago to open sea areas. In contrast, the PIOMAS snow depth revealed weak autumn variation, whereas the MW99 snow depth yielded distinct seasonal variability but a weak interannual change. Snow depth in October showed large differences among the various products, from which the AMSR topped the snow depth in the first-year ice region, while MW99 had the highest values for the multiyear ice zone.

Abstract:Snow depth on sea ice is an essential state variable of the polar climate system and yet one of the least known and most difficult to characterize parameters of the Arctic and Antarctic sea ice systems. Here, we present a new type of autonomous platform to measure snow depth, air temperature, and barometric pressure on drifting Arctic and Antarctic sea ice. “Snow Buoys” are designed to withstand the harshest environmental conditions and to deliver high and consistent data quality with minimal impact on the surface. Our current dataset consists of 79 time series (47 Arctic, 32 Antarctic) since 2013, many of which cover entire seasonal cycles and with individual observation periods of up to 3 years. In addition to a detailed introduction of the platform itself, we describe the processing of the publicly available (near real time) data and discuss limitations. First scientific results reveal characteristic regional differences in the annual cycle of snow depth: in the Weddell Sea, annual net snow accumulation ranged from 0.2 to 0.9 m (mean 0.34 m) with some regions accumulating snow in all months. On Arctic sea ice, the seasonal cycle was more pronounced, showing accumulation from synoptic events mostly between August and April and maxima in autumn. Strongest ablation was observed in June and July, and consistently the entire snow cover melted during summer. Arctic air temperature measurements revealed several above-freezing temperature events in winter that likely impacted snow stratigraphy and thus preconditioned the subsequent spring snow cover. The ongoing Snow Buoy program will be the basis of many future studies and is expected to significantly advance our understanding of snow on sea ice, also providing invaluable in situ validation data for numerical simulations and remote sensing techniques.

Abstract:Snow over sea ice controls energy budgets and affects sea ice growth and melting and thus has essential effects on the climate. Passive microwave radiometers can be used for basin-scale snow depth estimation at a daily scale; however, previously published methods applied to the Antarctic clearly underestimated snow depth, limiting their further application. Here, we estimated snow depth using passive microwave radiometers and a newly constructed, robust method by incorporating lower frequencies, which have been available from AMSR-E and AMSR-2 since 2002. A regression analysis using 7 years of Operation IceBridge (OIB) airborne snow depth measurements showed that the gradient ratio (GR) calculated using brightness temperatures in vertically polarized 37 and 7 GHz, i.e. GR(37/7), was optimal for deriving Antarctic snow depth, with a correlation coefficient of −0.64. We hence derived new coefficients based on GR(37/7) to improve the current snow depth estimation from passive microwave radiometers. Comparing the new retrieval with in situ measurements from the Australian Antarctic Data Centre showed that this method outperformed the previously available method (i.e. linear regression model based on GR(37/19)), with a mean difference of 5.64 cm and an RMSD of 13.79 cm, compared to values of −14.47 and 19.49 cm, respectively. A comparison to shipborne observations from Antarctic Sea Ice Processes and Climate indicated that in thin-ice regions, the proposed method performed slightly better than the previous method (with RMSDs of 16.85 and 17.61 cm, respectively). We generated a complete snow depth product over Antarctic sea ice from 2002 to 2020 on a daily scale, and negative trends could be found in all sea sectors and seasons. Abstract:Snow depth on sea ice is an Essential Climate Variable and a major source of uncertainty in satellite altimetry‐derived sea ice thickness. During winter of the MOSAiC Expedition, the "KuKa" dual‐frequency, fully polarized Ku‐ and Ka‐band radar was deployed in "stare" nadir‐looking mode to investigate the possibility of combining these two frequencies to retrieve snow depth. Three approaches were investigated: dual‐frequency, dual‐polarization and waveform shape, and compared to independent snow depth measurements. Novel dual‐polarization approaches yielded r2 values up to 0.77. Mean snow depths agreed within 1 cm, even for data sub‐banded to CryoSat‐2 SIRAL and SARAL AltiKa bandwidths. Snow depths from co‐polarized dual‐frequency approaches were at least a factor of four too small and had a r2 0.15 or lower. r2 for waveform shape techniques reached 0.72 but depths were underestimated. Snow depth retrievals using polarimetric information or waveform shape may therefore be possible from airborne/satellite radar altimeters.

Abstract:Satellite altimeters have been used to monitor Arctic sea ice (ASI) thickness for several decades, but whether the different altimeter missions (such as radar and laser altimeters) are in agreement with each other and suitable for long-term research needs to be investigated. To analyze the spatiotemporal characteristics of ASI, continuous long-term first-year ice, and multi-year ice of ASI freeboard, thickness, and volume from 2002 to 2021 using the gridded nadirization method from Envisat, CryoSat-2, and ICESat-2, altimeter data are comprehensively constructed and assessed. The influences of sea surface temperature (SST) and sea surface wind field (SSW) on ASI are also discussed. The freeboard/thickness and extent/area of ASI all varied seasonally and reached their maximum and minimum in April and October, March and September, respectively. From 2002 to 2021, the freeboard, thickness, extent, and area of ASI all consistently showed downward trends, and sea ice volume decreased by 5437 km3/month. SST in the Arctic rose by 0.003 degrees C/month, and the sea ice changes lagged behind this temperature variation by one month between 2002 and 2021. The meridional winds blowing from the central Arctic region along the eastern coast of Greenland to the North Atlantic each month are consistent with changes in the freeboard and thickness of ASI. SST and SSW are two of the most critical factors driving sea ice changes. This study provides new data and technical support for monitoring ASI and exploring its response mechanisms to climate change.
Deriving Antarctic Sea‐Ice Thickness from Satellite Altimetry and Estimating Consistency for NASA's ICESat/ICESat‐2 Missions

Abstract:With the launch of the Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2), densely measuring the Antarctic ocean all year long, monthly sea ice thickness changes can be inspected. However, the consistency between ICESat-2 and its predecessor ICESat remains unknown if a long-term change of the Antarctic sea ice thickness is to be examined. Due to the complex physical structure of Antarctic sea ice, an improved One-Layer Method (OLMi) for sea-ice thickness retrieval, with an similar to 0.3 m uncertainty, is proposed in this study. Using this method, the monthly sea ice variation in each sea sector of Antarctica from ICESat-2 is inspected, revealing detailed characteristics of Antarctic sea ice over sector scale such as bi-modal distributions. The different retrieving methods for the total freeboard from ICESat are found to be similar to 0.036 m lower than that from ICESat-2. The circum-Antarctic sea ice thickness shows a decreasing tendency (2003-2020), especially in summer with -0.014 m/yr. Plain Language Summary Sea ice variations can reflect global climate change since sea ice has a very strong cyclical process of growing/expanding and melting/shrinking when the seasons change. Sea ice elevation has been monitored by satellite-borne laser altimetry, namely Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat) (2003-2009) and ICESat-2 (2018-2020), with accuracy in centimeters. However, whether the two datasets are consistent with each other and suitable for long-term analysis needs to be examined. Here, we first improve an existing method to get a better estimation of sea ice thickness. Monthly sea ice thickness computed from ICESat-2 elevations has nearly 10 times the data coverage than the older generation ICESat, and shows how the expansion of newly formed sea ice and sea ice thickness change in some sea sectors would influence the statistical distribution of sea ice thickness in detail. Based on the consistency analysis, the gaps between ICESat/ICESat-2 could reach 14%. The underestimation of sea ice thickness with ICESat supports a thinning tendency of Antarctic sea ice, especially in summer. Abstract:Abstract. Knowledge of the snow depth distribution on Antarctic sea ice is poor but is critical to obtaining sea ice thickness from satellite altimetry measurements of freeboard. We examine the usefulness of various snow products to provide snow depth information over Antarctic fast ice with a focus on a novel approach using a high-resolution numerical snow accumulation model (SnowModel). We compare this model to results from ECMWF ERA-Interim precipitation, EOS Aqua AMSR-E passive microwave snow depths and in situ measurements at the end of the sea ice growth season. The fast ice was segmented into three areas by fastening date and the onset of snow accumulation was calibrated to these dates. SnowModel falls within 0.02 m snow water equivalent (swe) of in situ measurements across the entire study area, but exhibits deviations of 0.05 m swe from these measurements in the east where large topographic features appear to have caused a positive bias in snow depth. AMSR-E provides swe values half that of SnowModel for the majority of the sea ice growth season. The coarser resolution ERA-Interim, not segmented for sea ice freeze up area reveals a mean swe value 0.01 m higher than in situ measurements. These various snow datasets and in situ information are used to infer sea ice thickness in combination with CryoSat-2 (CS-2) freeboard data. CS-2 is capable of capturing the seasonal trend of sea ice freeboard growth but thickness results are highly dependent on the assumptions involved in separating snow and ice freeboard. With various assumptions about the radar penetration into the snow cover, the sea ice thickness estimates vary by up to 2 m. However, we find the best agreement between CS-2 derived and in situ thickness when a radar penetration of 0.05-0.10 m into the snow cover is assumed.

Abstract:In the last 30 years,the Arctic sea ice is undergoing drastic changes.Sea ice volume is one of the important indicators to quantify the change of sea ice.This paper according to the CryoSat-2 data and OSI SAF sea ice type data in Arctic in 2015.We extracted freeboard,snow depth,sea ice concentration and ice type,and obtained the raster data set in 25 km× 25 km spatial resolution through data reprocessing including interpolation,projection transformation,raster conversion,spatial resampling and so on.According to the hydrostatic equilibrium principle calculated the sea ice thickness value in every pixel,multiply ice area in the corresponding pixels thus estimated the sea ice volume of the sea ice concentration exceeds 75 ％,and analyzed the monthly and seasonal changes characteristics.We used high-accuracy sea ice thickness products from NASA Ice Bridge to verify thickness retrieved from CryoSat-2 Satellite.The results show that there is a high consistency of r=0.72.The sea ice is thickest in spring and thinnest in summer.The thick sea ice concentrated around the north coast of Greenland and Ellesmere Island.Generally the MYI is thicker than the first-year ice FYI.Sea ice volume is largest in winter,about 23.30 × 103 km3,almost a reduction of 70 ％ after the summer melt.The seasonal fluctuation of the FYI volume is larger than the MYI.

Abstract:ABSTRACT As a fundamental climate state variable, sea ice thickness (SIT) has exhibited a declining trend over the past five decades. Here, we present a quantitative comparison of three CryoSat-2 (CS-2) SIT products from the Alfred-Wegener-Institute (AWI), the National Snow and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC), and the European Space Agency (ESA) during the growth season (October to April) from 2010 to 2018 with Operation IceBridge (OIB) data. The results show that the NSIDC SIT product is the closest to the OIB SIT, with ESA SIT exhibiting the highest bias. During each growth season, the SIT differences between AWI and NSIDC gradually decrease, while such differences between ESA and NSIDC increase for first-year ice (FYI) and decrease then increase for multiyear ice (MYI). The difference between ESA and NSIDC is larger than that between AWI and NSIDC. Moreover, the rather large differences between ESA and NSIDC are mainly located in thin ice areas. Consistent to SIT comparative results, sea ice freeboard for ESA is higher than that for OIB, AWI and NSIDC, especially FYI freeboard. Sea ice freeboard for NSIDC is the closest to that for OIB. The comparative results indicate that the sources of the differences in SIT between the products mainly originate from the sea ice density and freeboard retrieval methods. The choices of different waveform retrackers and threshold assignments significantly influence the MYI freeboard retrievals due to the relatively thick snow depth and high surface roughness over MYI.

Abstract:We use total (sea ice plus snow) freeboard as estimated from Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) Geophysical Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) observations to compute Antarctic sea-ice thickness and volume. In order to overcome assumptions made about the relationship between snow depth and total freeboard or biases in snow depth products from satellite microwave radiometry, we implement a new algorithm. We treat the sea ice-snow system as one layer with reduced density, which we approximate by means of a priori information about the snow depth to sea-ice thickness ratio. We derive this a priori information directly from ICESat total freeboard data using empirical equations relating in-situ measurements of total freeboard to snow depth or sea-ice thickness. We apply our new algorithm (one-layer method or OLM), which uses the buoyancy equation approach without the need for auxiliary snow depth data, to compute sea-ice thickness for every ICESat GLAS footprint from a valid total freeboard. An improved method for sea-ice volume retrieval is also used to derive ice volume at 6.25 km scale. Spatio-temporal variations of sea-ice thickness and volume are then analyzed in the circumpolar Antarctic as well as its six sea sectors: Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Weddell East, Weddell West, Bell-Amund Sea, and Ross Sea, under both interannual and seasonal scales. Because the OLM algorithm relies on only one parameter, the total freeboard, and is independent of auxiliary snow depth information, it is believed to become a viable alternative sea-ice thickness retrieval method for satellite altimetry.
Variability Scaling and Consistency in Airborne and Satellite Altimetry Measurements of Arctic Sea Ice

Abstract:Satellite and airborne remote sensing provide complementary capabilities for the observation of the sea ice cover. However, due to the differences in footprint sizes and noise levels of the measurement techniques, as well as sea ice's variability across scales, it is challenging to carry out inter-comparison or consistently study these observations. In this study we focus on the remote sensing of sea ice thickness parameters and carry out the following: (1) the analysis of variability and its statistical scaling for typical parameters and (2) the consistency study between airborne and satellite measurements. By using collocating data between Operation IceBridge and CryoSat-2 (CS-2) in the Arctic, we show that consistency exists between the variability in radar freeboard estimations, although CryoSat-2 has higher noise levels. Specifically, we notice that the noise levels vary among different CryoSat-2 products, and for the European Space Agency (ESA) CryoSat-2 freeboard product the noise levels are at about 14 and 20 cm for first-year ice (FYI) and multi-year ice (MYI), respectively. On the other hand, for Operation IceBridge and NASA's Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat), it is shown that the variability in snow (or total) freeboard is quantitatively comparable despite more than a 5-year time difference between the two datasets. Furthermore, by using Operation IceBridge data, we also find widespread negative covariance between ice freeboard and snow depth, which only manifests on small spatial scales (40 m for first-year ice and about 80 to 120 m for multi-year ice). This statistical relationship highlights that the snow cover reduces the overall topography of the ice cover. Besides this, there is prevalent positive covariability between snow depth and snow freeboard across a wide range of spatial scales. The variability and consistency analysis calls for more process-oriented observations and modeling activities to elucidate key processes governing snow–ice interaction and sea ice variability on various spatial scales. The statistical results can also be utilized in improving both radar and laser altimetry as well as the validation of sea ice and snow prognostic models.

Abstract:Changes in snowpack associated with climatic warming has drastic impacts on surface energy balance in the cryosphere. Yet, traditional monitoring techniques, such as punctual measurements in the field, do not cover the full snowpack spatial and temporal variability, which hampers efforts to upscale measurements to the global scale. This variability is one of the primary constraints in model development. In terms of spatial resolution, active microwaves (synthetic aperture radar – SAR) can address the issue and outperform methods based on passive microwaves. Thus, high-spatial-resolution monitoring of snow depth (SD) would allow for better parameterization of local processes that drive the spatial variability of snow. The overall objective of this study is to evaluate the potential of the TerraSAR-X (TSX) SAR sensor and the wave co-polar phase difference (CPD) method for characterizing snow cover at high spatial resolution. Consequently, we first (1) investigate SD and depth hoar fraction (DHF) variability between different vegetation classes in the Ice Creek catchment (Qikiqtaruk/Herschel Island, Yukon, Canada) using in situ measurements collected over the course of a field campaign in 2019; (2) evaluate linkages between snow characteristics and CPD distribution over the 2019 dataset; and (3) determine CPD seasonality considering meteorological data over the 2015–2019 period. SD could be extracted using the CPD when certain conditions are met. A high incidence angle ( >30∘ ) with a high topographic wetness index (TWI) ( >7.0 ) showed correlation between SD and CPD ( R 2 up to 0.72). Further, future work should address a threshold of sensitivity to TWI and incidence angle to map snow depth in such environments and assess the potential of using interpolation tools to fill in gaps in SD information on drier vegetation types.
Polar Sea Ice Thickness and Melt Pond Fraction Measurements with Multi-Frequency Bistatic Radar Polarimetric and Interferometric Reflectometry

Abstract:Arctic and Antarctic sea ice covers are in a sharp contrast in terms of characteristics, distributions, and processes with a drastic decrease in the Arctic versus the opposite increase in the Antarctic in a changing climate. In quantifying polar sea ice differences to address the contrasted sea ice behaviors, two key parameters are sea ice thickness and melt pond fraction, which remain challenging to measure extensively in time and in space with a sustainable approach. Here, we present a new paradigm for such measurements using bistatic radar reflectometry, thanks to developments of low-cost receivers to acquire reflected signals from numerous existing transmitter systems operated at multiple frequencies to be replenished and sustained indefinitely into the future. For sea ice thickness measurement to determine ice volume, reflected signals likely come from the bottom ice-water interface avoiding large errors inherent in current altimetry techniques due to uncertainty in free-board height and snow cover. Regarding melt pond faction on sea ice to estimate albedo and insolation, the bistatic reflection can be dominated by melt pond water with permittivity that is one order of magnitude larger compared to that of snow or ice. These are examined by a combination of numerical Kirchhoff (KA) simulator and Numerical Maxwell Model of 3D simulations (NMM3D) to preserve phase and amplitude information and thereby account for both coherent and incoherent effects. Physical insights from the rigorous theory for bistatic radar reflectometry will be valuable to develop future satellite missions to resolve cryospheric science issues concerning the polar sea ice differences.
