Abstract:Abstract Continuous technological development, digitalization, Industry 4.0, robotization, virtualization, and related investments in new types of physical assets are imposing increasing financial and intellectual demands on micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). While fast technological development and rapid societal change make maintenance of a successful competitive edge ever more challenging, they also offer considerable potential for differentiation. In the area of networking and outside resources, MSMEs can utilize external resources and cooperate and collaborate with higher educational institutions (HEI) to boost their innovations pipeline and develop new technologies and processes to generate commercial products/services and improve their service offering. This research explores existing highly effective university–industry collaboration (UIC) models and seeks explanations for their success by examining the literature from the point of view of establishing successful relationships, emphasizing the importance of critical drivers for success. Our work synthesizes current knowledge of best practices based on a comparative analysis of practical collaboration. In the work, we identify eight popular and successful collaboration models: research and development partnerships, internships and co-op programs, knowledge transfer programs, entrepreneurship, and incubation programs, sponsored projects and grants, joint ventures and licensing agreements, executive education, professional and student career development. Based on analysis of globally reviewed successful models, a concept for robust, productive, and extended collaboration between companies and universities is produced suitable for the Finnish context. Several practical experiences are given for robust collaboration in the current post-COVID transition and energy crisis.
Targeting Academic Engagement in Open Innovation: Tools, Effects and Challenges for University Management

Abstract:Besides commercialization, university knowledge is commonly transferred through different interactions constituting the so called academic engagement. Very little attention has been paid to professionalizing these various interactions compared to the linear commercialization funnel. In this paper, we conducted a qualitative case study of the innovation support organization at Uppsala University, Sweden, analysing the following: Which mechanisms and tools the university management does apply in order to create targeted open innovation interactions and which effects and challenges emerge when applying these tools? We found that staff with experience of both academia and industry is important for enabling open innovation interactions to evolve and that tools can be used to concretize specific and deeper interactions. However, six challenges was also identified: (1) the intermittent nature of university-industry interactions; (2) lack of codified ways to trace effects; (3) extensive and time consuming preparatory work; (4) the extra resources and low conversion rates in engaging academically unrelated small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs); (5) high costs of recruiting staff with double competence and running the studied tools; and (6) the interdependencies which makes the system sensitive. Our results indicate that the tools used help the university to follow a mode 3 of knowledge creation. The study addressed the research gap regarding organizational support in academic engagement by indicating which tools can be used by the university management to target and focus industry-academia interactions, their effects and associated challenges. A lot of the effects still need to be codified, and more research is needed to understand their impact over time.

Abstract:There has been a rapid rise in commercial knowledge transfers from universities to practitioners or university–industry technology transfer (UITT), through licensing agreements, research joint ventures, and start-ups. The purpose of this study was to analyze the UITT process and its outcomes. Based on 98 structured interviews of key UITT stakeholders (i.e., university administrators, academic and industry scientists, business managers, and entrepreneurs) at five research universities in two regions of the US, we conclude that these stakeholders have different perspectives on the desired outputs of UITT. More importantly, numerous barriers to effective UITT were identified, including culture clashes, bureaucratic inflexibility, poorly designed reward systems, and ineffective management of university technology transfer offices (TTOs). Based on this qualitative evidence, we provide numerous recommendations for improving the UITT process.

Abstract:University–industry knowledge transfer is an important source wealth of creation for all partners; however, the practical management of this activity within universities is often hampered by procedural rigidity either through the absence of decision-making protocols to reconcile conflicting priorities or through the inconsistent implementation of existing policies. This is problematic, since it can impede operational effectiveness, prevent inter-organisational knowledge-creation and hamper organisational learning. This paper addresses this issue by adopting a cross-discipline approach and presenting meta-rules as a solution to aid organisational decision making. It is proposed that meta-rules can help resolve tensions arising from conflicting priorities between academics, knowledge transfer offices and industry and help facilitate strategic alignment of processes and policies within and between organisations. This research contributes to the growing debate on the strategic challenges of managing knowledge transfer and presents meta-rules as a practical solution to facilitate strategic alignment of internal and external stakeholder tensions. Meta-rules has previously only been applied in a computer intelligence context however, this research proves the efficacy of meta rules in a university–industry knowledge transfer context. This research also has practical implications for knowledge transfer office managers who can use meta-rules to help overcome resource limitations, conflicting priorities and goals of diverse internal and external stakeholders.

Research on the relational embeddedness of university-industry cooperation: a knowledge transfer perspective

Abstract:In an attempt to deeply analyze the mechanism of how relation embeddedness influences the industry-university cooperation performance by influencing the knowledge transfer between the industry and the university,this paper characterizes the industry-university interaction as trust and information sharing and introduces explicit and tacit knowledge transfer as an intermediary variable.After verifying the research hypothesis with a large sample data and structural equation model,the paper discovers that the existence of trust cost can lead to different effects of trust on explicit and tacit knowledge transfer.Therefore,this paper maintains that the trust level should be determined flexibly according to the features of knowledge activities.The paper also indicates that the industry-university cooperation,which features tacit knowledge transfer,should update the current enterprises' information sharing model from pure information acquisition to information interaction and participation,in order to reduce the 'crowding-out effect' and promote the tacit knowledge transfer in industry-university collaboration.

Abstract:Abstract As part of contemporary Triple Helix operations, universities are more and more frequently asked to collaborate with other social actors to generate knowledge that supports their innovation and development activities and to foster economic growth. In addition to research and education tasks, universities are developing formal and informal collaborations with industrial organizations to fulfill the third mission of societal effectiveness and to receive funding from research grants. These university-industry research and development projects, at the societal level and from the viewpoints of policymakers and financiers, aim to create economic growth and to support the innovation and learning capabilities of the organizations, among other benefits. One key challenge to managing these collaborative activities between universities and other societal organizations is related to measuring and evaluating them. Therefore, this study focuses on supporting the future development of evaluation and performance measurement for the operational-level activities of university–industry–government relationships. The study explores the performance measurement practices currently used by universities and financiers and intends to increase the understanding of both current performance measurement practices and the challenges regarding university–industry ( UI ) collaboration projects. The empirical data for this study were gathered from UI research projects in Finland. As part of the management of university–industry–government relations and Triple Helix operations, the results of this study reveal some challenges in the evaluation and measurement of the collaborative projects in the three phases explored: before the project, during the project, and after the project. The study’s results indicate that UI collaboration projects’ performance evaluation practices are based mainly on the tasks promised in the projects’ applications. Furthermore, measurements are mainly used for external-reporting purposes. To support the future development of the evaluation and performance measurement of university–industry–government relations, some propositions for overcoming these challenges are presented, and the potential implications of the findings for scholars, university members, financier representatives, and policy makers are discussed.

Abstract:University–industry collaborations are an important pathway through which academic scientists engage with industry and society, co-create new knowledge, and raise funds to carry out costly research endeavors. Nonetheless, the management of such collaborations is challenging and requires universities to protect their investments in intellectual property and to capture value from them. This paper examines how scientists' motivations to undertake inventive activities shape the relationship between research partnerships, the ownership of academic patents resulting from such partnerships, and the licensing of university-owned patents. We examine the interactions between these factors using data on 501 research projects conducted by scientists affiliated with universities located in various countries. Our analysis indicates that the inventors' motivations bear a direct effect on the ownership and commercialization of academic patents. Moreover, these motivations positively moderate the relationship between research partnerships and the management of academic patents. These findings have interesting implications for university administrators striving to enhance the effectiveness of the technology transfer process.

Abstract:Collaborations between universities and firms provide a key pathway for innovation. In the big data era, however, the interactions between these two communities are being reshaped by information of much higher complexity and knowledge exchanges with more volume and pace. With this research, we put forward a methodology for comprehensively measuring both actor collaboration and produced knowledge in shaping network dynamics of university-industry collaboration. Using dual-layer networks consisting of organizations and topics, we mapped the longitudinal correlations between partnerships and knowledge in terms of both co-applications of patents and semantics. Network structures, individual characteristics, and knowledge proximity indicators were used to depict the longitudinal networks and then model the network dynamics. Further, a stochastic actor-oriented model was used to provide insights into the factors contributing to the network's evolution. A case study on university-industry collaborations in the information and communications technology sector demonstrates the feasibility of the methodology. The result of this study can be used for future research into the mechanisms that underpin university-industry collaborations and opportunity discovery.

Abstract:PurposeUniversity–industry (UI) collaboration is essential for knowledge and technology exchange between higher education institutions and industries, enabling enterprises to accelerate innovation. However, few studies have investigated the collaborative innovation mechanism through which UI collaboration can enhance the accumulation of firms' intellectual capital (IC) and how this, in turn, affects their innovation-driven development.Design/methodology/approachDrawing from the knowledge management and collaborative innovation theory, this research proposes a theoretical framework of the inter-organization relationship between enterprises and universities to investigate the influence mechanism of UI collaboration, including academic engagement and commercialization, on corporate performance as well as the mediating role of IC by employing survey that covers 177 UI collaborations.FindingsEmpirical results show that human capital and relational capital fully mediate the relationship between academic engagement UI collaboration and corporate economic performance, while human capital partially mediates the relationship between commercialization UI collaboration and corporate economic performance. Additionally, structural capital and relational capital partially mediate the relationship between academic engagement and corporate innovation performance, while structural capital fully mediates the relationship between commercialization and corporate innovation performance.Originality/valueThis study empirically investigates how academic engagement and commercialization impact corporate performance (i.e. innovation dimension or economic dimension). It uncovers this relationship's underlying mechanism by documenting the IC's mediating impact.

Abstract:Universities are an integral part of the skills and innovation supply chain for businesses that are multidimensional, sustainable, quality, and enduring in the long term. In pursuing this role, universities are encouraged to establish a university-industry cooperation (UIC) context that supports faculty and students to engage in business activities. Collaboration is very important for universities, because universities are not only research universities, but must reach the level of learning colleges. The results of the research found that implementing UIC regulations affected the performance of university academic innovation, it also found that the knowledge management mechanism was an important factor to improve the performance of university academic innovation, and the implementation of regulations also played a role in developing knowledge management and performance of university academic innovation.

Abstract:Industry -University -Research Cooperation (IURC)plays an important role in building a national innovation system and turning to an innovation -driven economy.Vigorously developing emergent industries is the only way to upgrade industrial structure of our country.Given lack of studies on IURC in the context of industries,based on the evolutionary game theory,this paper relatively analyzes the game process of collaborative R&D activities with University &Research In-stitution between randomly paired enterprises in the two types of industries.After the parameter value is assigned,we verify all theoretical proposition one by one using Netlogo simulation software.The findings show:regardless of what kind of in-dustries,IURC is a gradually evolutionary process;it has a negative correlation with the collaborative costs,and positive correlation with the market risk factor and collaborative gains;when there is a certain level of technology in different indus-tries and equal cooperative gains,in the short term,the mature companies are more inclined to cooperate with university or research institution.Finally,a further reflection about how to improve the status of IURC in emergent industries is put for-ward.

Abstract:This study applies a systematic literature review and qualitative content analysis to identify and synthesize key factors that enable collaborative innovation between industry and universities. Using a keyword search in the Web of Science database, the review identified 40 papers that were frequently cited on the topic. Results were summarized into seven main themes or central factors stimulating collaborative innovation: resources, university organization, boundary-spanning functions, collaborative experience, culture, status centrality and environmental context. This article elaborates on these ‘enabling factors’ and uses them to summarize a number of results from the reviewed studies regarding facilitators of collaborative innovation. The discussion focuses on how these factors relate and the extent to which they are amenable to policy intervention.

Abstract:Knowledge has vital role in the development of an economy. Universities have switched to interacting with industries like never before to achieve excellence. On the other hand, industries look forward to working and partnering with academics to a greater extent and firms are pushed to innovate by the ever-increasing competitive market forces. Fostering university/industry (U/I) relationships can pave the way for the participating firms and their subsidiaries for building social capital and portrays trust, shared goals, and network ties as the pivotal elements of the social capital theory. In this paper, we develop a theoretical model based on the integrated view that communication is the medium for building trust and strong social ties. This, in turn, can enhance the quality and effectiveness of the knowledge transferred and its utilization for inducing innovation, adapting to sophisticated technology, which in turn foster growth opportunities.

Abstract:University-industry collaboration (UIC) has emerged as a key driver of innovation through enabling knowledge transfer in meeting the evolving needs of partner institutions. This research explores the profound impact of strategic alignment on the effectiveness of university-industry knowledge exchange while exploring the determinants that drive the formation of strategic alignment. This research uses mixed methods, namely a concurrent embedded model with qualitative and quantitative approaches as the main and secondary approaches. Based on empirical data collected from a survey of 126 university and industry collaborations in Indonesia. The results of this research provide substantial insight into this area and confirm the central role of strategic alignment in the success of collaborative initiatives, especially at the team level. In particular, this research underscores the superiority of cognitive expertise in teams, compared with exclusive reliance on personality traits. This research also identifies trust and bond strength as important foundations of team dynamics, while highlighting the positive influence of operational and cultural fit on organizational factors. Significantly, this research challenges initial assumptions by not finding a direct relationship between shared understanding, strategic flexibility, balancing commitments, and achieving strategic alignment. These findings have profound implications for the strategic planning and implementation of UIC initiatives. In a broader context, this research provides theoretical and managerial contributions.

Abstract:Aligning Aalto University’s scientific and economic potential and risk management with the growing Otaniemi campus takes place with flexible and integrative spatial and urban concepts. The campus development wants to maximize the usages of existing resources, optimize the flexibility of uses and minimize fixed costs of users for changing future as well as to produce urban, street-level places for enhanced social encounters and open innovation. This living laboratory of campus development aims at flexibility also in energy production, as well as at increasing self-sufficiency, made possible by local energy solutions, a smart utilization of electricity network and by changing consumer behaviour. The new internal service operator role for renting relevant resources has diminished surplus areas of academic units and the freed spaces are treated as shared resources for work, housing and services according to the principle of Building as a Service (BaaS). New types of gardens support biodiversity cycles. The university has also implemented on-demand public transportation service supporting flexible mobility to other campuses. The campus sustainability programme connects the university with external partners, such as industry, government, and various organisations of civil society. Through this multi-faceted development, the mono-functional green-field campus receives company from a new diversified city with mixed-use urban development. Partnering is crucial, contributing to sharing economical risk, social and humanitarian programs, sustainability networks, city partnerships, greening events, and cross-disciplinary academic programs. Along the philosophy of BaaS, companies and partnering research institutions are welcome to locate their personnel to the thematic quarters of the campus, supporting co-creation and empowering the culture-economic ecosystem.

Abstract:Faced with the pandemic caused by COVID-19, universities worldwide are giving a powerful response to support their communities. One way to provide support is via the collaboration between universities and industries, allowing the co-creation of knowledge that leads to innovation. Historically, universities, as knowledge-intensive organizations (KIOs), have produced knowledge through research. At present, its important contribution to countries’ economy is widely recognized through the development of new knowledge and technical know-how. Universities are a source of innovation for firms, which ultimately translates into social welfare improvements. The objective of this research is to analyze the university–firm linkage. The methodological strategy is carried out using Bayesian networks through a model where the main elements of university–industry linking, which impact competitiveness and innovation, are identified and quantified. The technology transfer model shows that the most crucial processes are Technology Strategy, Value Proposal, Knowledge Management, Control and Monitoring, Innovation Management, Needs Detection, Knowledge Creation, New Products and Services, and Absorption Capacity.

Abstract:This paper develops an integrated framework and examines how the implicit property-knowledge heterogeneity, acquisition costs and interactivity embedded in external knowledge acquisition (EKA) affect firms' innovation performance. This is done by distinguishing three forms of EKA, including patent backward citations, patent collaboration and patent purchase. This research contributes to the existing EKA and open innovation literatures by studying whether EKA and internal R&D serve as substitutes or complements for firms' innovation performance. Using a sample of 77 publicly listed firms in the electronic and information technology (EIT) industries of mainland China, with panel data collected from 2004 to 2016, this study has reached the following new findings: First, EKA both through patent backward citations and patent collaboration have significantly positive effects on firms' innovation performance; the effect of patent purchase is not significant. Second, EKA through patent backward citations complements firms' internal R&D, but EKA both through patent collaboration and patent purchase act as substitutes for internal R&D. Third, an inverted U-shaped relationship exists between the level of balance among the three different forms of EKA and firms' innovation performance. Finally, contingent interaction effects exist between the level of balance among the three different forms of EKA and internal R&D on firms' innovation performance. A complementary relationship exists with the internal R&D when firms have a high level of balance among three different forms of EKA. However, a substitution relationship exists with the internal R&D when firms have a low level of balance among the three different forms of EKA.

Abstract:This research aims to identify typologies of companies willing to cooperate with universities to foster knowledge co-creation and ease knowledge transfer to students within courses, training, communities of practises, etc., regardless of the business sector they are active in. To implement the research scope, we rely on the qualitative comparative analysis method (QCA). Interactions between causal factors within the university–industry relations, and knowledge co-creation have been examined. The results obtained indicate two typologies. Type 1 includes companies oriented towards supporting interactions with universities based on education, research, student placements, training, and community services such as consultancy, and product development. These acknowledge both the necessity of creating platforms to establish more ties with universities and the importance of alumni connections to develop effective campus management. Type 2 includes companies that are not interested in understanding or supporting the mission of universities in society, not developing ties with universities, and generating only a superficial interaction, which hinders their involvement in the creation of knowledge with universities. From a managerial perspective, this paper highlights the relationship between universities and industry and how this could contribute to increased resilience for a society facing unexpected challenges, such as the global crisis related to COVID-19 and the present state of international political instability.

Abstract:University–industry relations (UIR) are usually analysed by the knowledge transfer channels, but existing studies have failed to address what knowledge content is being transferred – impacting the technology output aimed by the partnership. We aim to identify the Knowledge Flow in UIR, defined by the actor responsible for initiating a partnership – direction of the flow – and the type of technology output being transferred – content of the flow. We compare the knowledge flow in innovation systems of agriculture and aerospace sectors in Brazil and the Netherlands. The cases show that the knowledge flow is influenced more by the maturity of the national and sectoral innovation system than by the technological trajectory of the sector itself. While the Dutch cases demonstrate that both sectors are part of a mature innovation system, the Brazilian cases, although expected to have a similar technological trajectory, demonstrated a more immature innovation system.

Abstract:In this article we pay attention to the different analytical layers that compose the managerial context of university-industry relationships - a cornerstone of entrepreneurial universities. Specifically, we address the dynamics of joint university-industry laboratories, a typical example of high-quality engagement between academia and industry. Joint university-industry laboratories are understood as long term joint undertakings shared by universities and industry targeted at generating value for all parties involved through various channels. Given the different missions of universities and industry, joint laboratories inherit special challenges for management. Our exploration therefore outlines four complementary dimensions of interest in this context: the macro environment, university-level institutional challenges, strategic context and, lastly, we deal with individual-level aspects when analyzing identity issues involved in the dynamics of joint university-industry labs. A research agenda is derived from these explorations.
