Abstract:Using a unique county-level panel on single-season paddy rice yield and daily weather outcomes from 1996 to 2009, we examined the impacts of weather variations on paddy rice yield in China. We have five key findings: ( i ) in contrast to nearly all previous studies focusing on rice production in tropical and subtropical regions, we discovered that higher daily minimum temperature during the vegetative stage increased paddy rice yield; ( ii ) consistent with previous assessments, we found that higher daily maximum temperature during the vegetative and ripening stages reduced paddy rice yield; ( iii ) the impacts of sunshine duration and rainfall on paddy rice yield differed across the plant’s growth stages; ( iv ) estimated weather effects on yield differed by rice variety; and ( v ) weather variations caused a net economic loss of $17.4–53.0 million to China’s single-season paddy rice sector during the sample period, depending on econometric estimation strategies.

Abstract:Winter cropping is an effective way to solve the low resource utilization efficiency in single rice system. In order to explore the effects of winter cropping on rice yield, economic benefits and resource utilization efficiency of single rice paddy field, two different cropping systems (single and winter multiple cropping systems) including 4 treatments: middle rice (CK), Chinese milk vetch—middle rice (DC), rape—middle rice (DR) and wheat—middle rice (DW) were set up to explore their difference on productivity, economic benefit and resource utilization efficiency. The results showed that compared with CK, the rice yield was increased by improving the components of rice yield and by increasing population dry matter accumulation in winter multiple cropping system. Compared with CK, the average annual yield of DC, DR and DW increased by 1.47%, 7.41% and 3.92%. The economic benefits of DR increased by 32.1% compared with CK, while the economic benefits of DC and DW were 9.99% and 8.3% lower than CK, respectively. Winter multiple cropping increased the light allocation rate. Compared with CK, DC, DR and DW increased light allocation rate by 119.25%, 102.11% and 104.39%, respectively, but the average annual light productive efficiency was 53.33%, 40.48% and 40% lower than CK. Winter multiple cropping increased the effective accumulated temperature distribution rate. Compared with CK, DC, DR and DW increased effective accumulated temperature distribution rate by 78.61%、58.8%、60.92%, respectively, but the average annual accumulated temperature (≥ 10°C) production efficiency was 43.11%、23.88%、24.04% lower than CK, respectively. Compared with the single cropping system, the double cropping system has significant advantages in annual rice yield, dry matter accumulation, total economic benefit, light and effective accumulated temperature distribution rate. Rape—middle rice model is the optimized planting model for the middle reaches of the Yangtze River.

Abstract:Quantifying the carbon footprint of crop production can help provide a theoretical basis to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions in agro⁃ecosystem. In this study, the life cycle assessment was used to assess the carbon footprint of two cropping systems (early rice⁃late rice continuous cropping system and spring maize⁃late rice rotation systems) and quantitatively analyze the relative contribution of various carbon sources in grain production in paddy field of Southern China. The results showed that the spring maize⁃late rice rotation reduced the carbon emissions per unit area by 6724 kg CO2⁃eq / hm 2 and the carbon footprint per unit yield by 0.56 kg CO2⁃eq / kg compared with the continuous cropping of early rice⁃late rice. The carbon emissions from the production of spring maize were less 6228 kg CO2⁃eq / hm 2 than in early rice. The carbon emissions of late rice in spring maize⁃late rice rotation system were decreased by 497 kg CO2⁃eq / hm , when compared with that in early rice⁃late rice system. The main components of carbon footprint in the early rice⁃late rice planting system were derived from the carbon emission of methane (CH4) from paddy field (9776kg CO2⁃eq / hm , 54.8%), nitrogen fertilizer
Study on Light,Heat and Water Utilization Efficiency of Cropping Patterns in Dry-Hot Valley Area

Abstract:In the irrigated sloping farmland of Yunnan Yuanmou County dry-hot valley area,the light,heat and water utilization efficiency of the six different cropping patterns were investigated,for optimization of the efficiency cropping patterns of dry-hot valley sloping farmland.Results showed that corn-tomato pattern and tomato-rice pattern on the utilization of solar energy,as well as thermal acceptance coefficient,were relatively higher,and corn-bean pattern was relatively common pattern.For water using efficiency,corn-tomato pattern was the highest 55.69 kg/mm·hm2,rice-onion pattern was the lowest 7.546 kg/mm·hm2.Tomatoes for the longest harvest period,the highest yields,and market prices steadily up trend,corn and rice-tomato pattern were favorably received by peasants with good prospects for development.

Abstract:Abstract Food and energy security are important issues that threaten human survival and development. The rice–wheat rotation system provides a stable source of food for more than 20% of the world's population, but there have been no reports on the energy balance of different rice–wheat rotation systems. This study evaluates the energy inputs and outputs of three rice–wheat rotation systems and their energy production efficiency through the study of dry direct‐seeded, wet direct‐seeded, and transplanted rice–wheat rotation systems. The results of the study showed that the average total energy inputs in the dry direct‐seeded, wet direct‐seeded, and transplanted rice–wheat rotation systems were 58,677, 74,083, and 69,022 MJ ha−1, respectively. The production resources with more energy input in rice–wheat rotation system were all related to water and fertilizer. The energy input in the rice season accounts for more than 50.69% of the total energy input in the rice–wheat rotation system. At the same time, rice–wheat rotation production is highly dependent on nonrenewable energy. Among the three rice–wheat rotation systems, the transplanted rice–wheat rotation system had the highest total energy output and net energy, while the dry direct‐seeded rice–wheat rotation had the highest energy use efficiency, energy productivity, energy profitability, and human energy profitability. The results showed that the key to reducing the energy input in the rice–wheat rotation system is to reduce the amount of water and fertilizer. The transplanted rice–wheat rotation system is more suitable for promotion in rice–wheat rotation production areas with good irrigation conditions, while the dry direct‐seeded rice–wheat rotation system is highly compatible with the current development direction of low energy consumption and high energy efficiency in agricultural production and is suitable for promotion in rice–wheat production areas with poor irrigation conditions.

Abstract:Grain overturn machine,solar energy and heat pump technology were introduced for in-store drying of high moisture cereals,thereby achiving the purpose of high efficiency,energy-saving,rapid and even during decreasing grain moisture.The results showed that the system was suitable for the large warehouses stored cereals with smooth surface,drying cycle could be less than 15 days,the range of decreasing moisture was about 1.5% and COP of the heat pump over 5.0.To some extent,the solar energy contributed over 20% to the whole system.

Abstract:Resource scarcity, large environmental footprint and low economic profits are great challenges faced by global crop production. Development of feasible cropping systems that can coordinate productivity and sustainability is critical for addressing these challenges. Here, field experiments were conducted from 2017 to 2020 to compare the energy equivalent yield, energy use efficiency, labor and water productivity, carbon footprint, and net ecosystem economic benefits of the six rice-based crop rotation systems in central China, including rice-wheat (RW), rice-rapeseed (RRs), double-season rice (DR), ratoon rice (RR), maize-rice (MR), and rice-fallow systems (RF). The results demonstrated that MR had the highest energy equivalent yield of 20.3 Mg ha−1 among all the tested rotation systems, which was significantly increased by 28.0%, 32.8%, 18.9%, 26.9%, and 99.5% compared with that of RW, RRs, DR, RR, and RF, respectively. MR and RR achieved higher energy use efficiency than RW, RRs and DR due to their higher total energy output and lower total energy input, respectively. Meanwhile, MR and RR also exhibited the highest water and labor productivity among these rotation systems, respectively. Furthermore, their carbon footprint per area and per energy output were comparable to those of RW and RRs, but significantly lower than those of DR. Overall, MR and RR increased the net ecosystem economic benefits by 12.6–76.8% and 25.1–188.3% relative to other four traditional systems (RRs, RW, DR and RF), respectively. These results suggest that MR and RR are the recommended feasible rice-based crop rotation systems to coordinate high productivity, resource use efficiency, and economic benefit with lower carbon footprint in central China.

Abstract:Rice–wheat rotation cropland is one of the most important agroecosystems in South China, the escalation of conflict between food demand augment and water supply shortage increased with climate change. Water use efficiency plays a more significant role in optimising water and carbon management. Thus, the diurnal and seasonal variations of water use efficiency were assessed by the 3‐year eddy covariance observations in the Shouxian National Observatory, a typical rice–wheat rotation station. The results revealed a 'U'‐shaped diurnal pattern of water use efficiency for winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and rice (Oryza sativa L.). Seasonal water use efficiency had two peaks with the highest in the winter wheat‐growing season. The average water use efficiency for the rice–wheat rotation cropland was 2.85 g C kg−1 H2O over the whole year with 2.62 and 3.11 g C kg−1 H2O for winter wheat and rice, respectively. However, gross primary productivity and evapotranspiration of rice were higher than those of winter wheat. Temperature, photosynthetically active radiation were the principal impact factors of water use efficiency in the rice‐growing season. Comparatively, soil water and vapour pressure deficit dominated the water use efficiency changes in the winter wheat‐growing season. Our analyses can help understand the water use requirements for carbon assimilation on rice–wheat rotation cropland on the field scale.

Abstract:Climate is the most important environmental factor influencing yield during rice growth and development. To investigate the relationships between climate and yield under different crop rotation patterns and planting methods, three typical rotation patterns (vegetable−rice (V), rape−rice (R), and wheat−rice (W)) and two mechanical planting methods (mechanical transplanting (T1) and mechanical direct seeding (T2)) were established. The results showed that compared to the V rotation pattern, the average daily temperature (ADT) during the sowing to heading stage increased under both R and W rotation patterns, which significantly shortened the growth period. Thus, the effective accumulated temperature (EAT), photosynthetic capacity, effective panicle (EP), and spikelet per panicle (SP) under R and W rotation patterns significantly decreased, leading to reductions in grain yield (GY). VT2 had a higher ratio of productive tillers (RPT), relative chlorophyll content (SPAD), leaf area index (LAI), and net photosynthetic rate (Pn) than those of VT1, which significantly increased panicle dry matter accumulation (DMA), resulting in an increase in GY. Although RT2 and WT2 had a higher RPT than those of RT1 and WT1, the GY of RT1 and WT1 decreased due to the significant reductions in EAT and photosynthetic capacity. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that the comprehensive score for different rotation patterns followed the order of V > R > T with VT2 ranking first. The structural equation model (SEM) showed that EAT and ADT were the most important climate factors affecting yield, with total effects of 0.520 and −0.446, respectively. In conclusion, mechanical direct seeding under vegetable−rice rotation pattern and mechanical transplanting under rape−rice or wheat−rice rotation pattern were the rice-planting methods that optimized the climate resources in southwest China.

Abstract:Quantitative investigation of the utilization characteristics of precipitation resources and the production capacity of the intercropping production system under the soybean maize intercropping mode in northern China is of great significance for improving the resource utilization rate of dryland agriculture and regional sustainable development. This study adopted a completely randomized block design, and six planting modes were set up: soybean monoculture, maize monoculture, and four soybean maize intercropping modes. Plant height and grain yield data were observed, and precipitation resource utilization efficiency was calculated. Based on the FAO-56 recommended crop coefficients, the crop coefficients were corrected according to the actual growth of crops in the experimental area; combined with meteorological data, the crop water demand under different planting modes was estimated based on the Penman-Monteith principle. The results showed that crops' daily growth water demand under different planting modes was generally deficient in water in the early and middle stages of growth, and surplus in the later stages. Compared with the monoculture mode, there were significant differences in precipitation resource utilization efficiency under different intercropping modes (P < 0.05), with soybeans reduced by 67.50% ~ 89.56%, and corn reduced by 43.99% ~ 61.05%. Based on the semi-humid and semi-arid area of the eastern Loess Plateau, an appropriate irrigation system needs to be designated for soybean and corn intercropping systems in the early and middle stages of crop growth. Under a certain proportion of water resource supply, different modes have different water resource utilization efficiency and final production capacity for the intercropping system.

Abstract:Rice (Oryza sativa L.) stands as one of the most critical staple crops globally, with its yield and water use efficiency (WUE) being pivotal for food security. This study aimed to evaluate the agronomic and physiological traits and WUE of six rice varieties under two irrigation regimes: alternate wetting and drying (AWD) and conventional irrigation (CI). The results showed the significant improvements in grain yield and WUE with variety improvement under both irrigation treatments. Under AWD, high water use efficiency varieties (HWVs) demonstrated pronounced enhancements, including tillers and spikelet production, filled grain rate, 1000-grain weight, harvest index, leaf area index, non-structural carbohydrate remobilization, photosynthesis and catalase and peroxidase activities of leaf, root and shoot biomass, and root activity. AWD was observed to synchronize and amplify grain yield (2–14%) and WUE, including both leaf-level (13.94–20.72%) and yield-level (23.20–30.87%) water use efficiencies (WUEL and WUEY). The water use potential for HWVs was substantially enhanced under AWD. The integration of variety improvement with AWD irrigation strategies effectively achieves the dual objectives of high yield and WUE, offering a promising approach for sustainable rice production.

Abstract:In recent years, many rotational and integrated rice production systems coupled with several greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions mitigation practices have been developed and adopted for demand of low carbon production. However, there have been only few studies about comparisons on the balance between high production and mitigation of GHG emissions in different rice production systems. We therefore aimed to evaluate economic output and carbon footprint of different rice production systems, based on several long-term experiments conducted by our lab. CH4 and N2O emission were measured by the same static chamber/gas chromatogram measurement procedure in different rice production systems, including rice-fallow, rice-rapeseed, rice-wheat, double rice, and integrated rice-crayfish production system. Then, we applied the DeNitrification DeComposition model to simulate CH4 and N2O emission over different years under the same condition for comparison. Carbon footprint was calculated following the process-based life cycle assessment (PLCA) methodology. The economic benefit of rice production systems was assessed by cost-benefit analysis. According to the analysis, the double-rice production system exhibited the highest intensity of carbon footprint (ICF = 4.14 kg CO2-eq yuan−1), rain-fed treatment in the rice-rapeseed system had the lowest (ICF = 0.68 kg CO2-eq yuan−1). The intensity of carbon footprint in different treatments in the integrated rice-crayfish production system was around 0.8 kg CO2-eq yuan−1. Overall, the results of this case study suggest: (1) the proposed practices in different rice production systems are no straw returning (rice-fallow), no-tillage without straw returning (rice-wheat), rain-fed farming (rice-rapeseed), no insect and no inoculation (double rice), and feeding with straw returning (rice-crayfish); (2) rotational and integrated systems can achieve high net output with low carbon emission; (3) reducing the amount of nitrogenous fertilizer application is the most important and effective GHG mitigation practice for rotational systems.

Abstract:Canopy structural parameters and light radiation are important for evaluating the light use efficiency and grain yield of crops. Their spatial variation within canopies and temporal variation over growth stages could be simulated using dynamic models with strong application and predictability. Based on an optimized canopy structure vertical distribution model and the Beer-Lambert law combined with hyperspectral remote sensing (RS) technology, we established a new dynamic model for simulating leaf area index (LAI), leaf angle (LA) distribution and light radiation at different vertical heights and growth stages. The model was validated by measuring LAI, LA and light radiation in different leaf layers at different growth stages of two different types of rice (Oryza sativa L.), i.e., japonica (Wuxiangjing14) and indica (Shanyou63). The results show that the simulated values were in good agreement with the observed values, with an average RRMSE (relative root mean squared error) between simulated and observed LAI and LA values of 14.75% and 21.78%, respectively. The RRMSE values for simulated photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) transmittance and interception rates were 14.25% and 9.22% for Wuxiangjing14 and 15.71% and 4.40% for Shanyou63, respectively. In addition, the corresponding RRMSE values for red (R), green (G) and blue (B) radiation transmittance and interception rates were 16.34%, 15.96% and 15.36% for Wuxiangjing14 and 5.75%, 8.23% and 5.03% for Shanyou63, respectively. The results indicate that the model performed well for different rice cultivars and under different cultivation conditions.
Comparative study on annual yield, water consumption, irrigation water use efficiency and economic benefits of different rice-oilseed rape rotation systems in Central China

Abstract:Direct seeded planting pattern is considered as a practicable substitute to transplanting planting pattern because it has the advantages of saving labor, low input cost, high water use efficiency, and easy to manage. However, the comparison between different direct seeded rice-oilseed rape rotation systems and traditional transplanting rice transplanting oilseed rape rotation system (TTR-TPO) has rarely been studied. In this study, the annual yield, water consumption, water use efficiency and economic benefits of different rice-oilseed rotation systems were compared during the rice and oilseed rape growing seasons from 2018 to 2020. Our results show that the average annual yield and water consumption of wet direct seeded rice-direct seeded oilseed rape rotation system (WDSRDSO) and wet direct seeded rice-transplanting oilseed rape rotation system (WDSR-TPO) were significant higher than that of TTR-TPO and TTR-DSO. Annual yield of dry direct seeded rice-direct seeded oilseed rape rotation system (DDSR-DSO) and TTR-TPO was similar, but the water consumption of DDSR-DSO was reduced by 22.6% on an average than that of TTR-TPO. Irrigation water use efficiency (WUEi) and net economic return of DDSRDSO were the highest, which were 72.3% and 15.2% higher than TTR-TPO, respectively. On the contrary, WUEi and net economic return was similar between WDSR-DSO, WDSR-TPO and TTR-TPO, traditional transplanting rice-direct seeded oilseed rape rotation system (TTR-DSO). Here, we show that DDSR-DSO is an alternative to TTR-TPO in central China due to higher WUEi and net economic return, less water consumption and similar annual yield. In addition, WDSR-DSO and WDSR-TPO may be suitable for regions where water levels are high for soil puddling during land preparation and rainfall is sufficient in the rice growth season.

Abstract:Nutrition values of six different multiple cropping patterns in Nanjing were compared.The results indicated that total crude protein and digestible DM yield of annual ryegrass were 1.45 times and 1.26 times higher than those of wheat.Total crude protein and digestible DM yield of Hybrid Pennisetum(Pennisetum americanum×P.purpureum) were 2.06 times and 1.61 times higher than those of rice.In six multiple cropping patterns,annual ryegrass-Hybrid Pennisetum system produced the highest total crude protein and digestible DM yield;and Rye-Hybrid Pennisetum system was the second.In intensive cropping regions,planting forages in both seasons gave higher profit.

Abstract:The performance of three widely used thermal radiation models, the P-1 model, the surface-to-surface (S2S) model and the Discrete-Ordinates (DO) model, were evaluated for simulation temperature in Chinses solar greenhouse. The thermal radiation models were evaluated by comparing the numerical results with experimental data at representative points in the CSG. For indoor rear wall, the indoor soil and indoor air, the models showed good agreement between the experimental data and the simulated results correspond to P1, S2S and DO respectively. This work provides information for simulate greenhouse temperature and use specific radiation models for the most suitable thermal environment for crop growth.

Abstract:The North China Plain (NCP) has a severe water shortage. About 70% groundwater has been exploited for irrigation. Winter wheat - summer maize and pears are typical representative cereal crops and commercial fruit trees in this area, respectively. Water budget for the typical cropland and orchard ecosystems has a significant importance for agricultural production, especially in the NCP. Therefore, evapotranspiration (ET) and water balance were studied in the annual winter wheat - summer maize rotation (cropland) and pear orchard. Latent and sensible heat fluxes were measured by eddy covariance. Annual ET for pear trees was 764 mm and for both crops was 690 mm. The difference of ET between these two ecosystems was about equal to one irrigation. Transpiration was the main loss with the mean proportion of 63% for crops and 76% for pear trees. Wheat growth period is in the dry season and requires much more irrigation than maize. Mainly transpiration (80%) occurred from April through September in the both ecosystems which was also the growing period for pear trees. The annual precipitation was 469 mm and 444 mm in the pear orchard and cropland, respectively, although 80% of it occurred from June to September. Compared with the precipitation, annual mean water deficit was 294 mm for the pear trees and 244mm for crops. The water shortage was severe in May while surplus water presented in July and August. Energy and ET fluxes were determined by atmospheric demand and the response of plants as controlled by plant phenology and crop selection. As the water shortage situation becomes more serious in the NCP, sustainability of the agricultural ecosystems could be improved by changing crop planting patterns, specifically, increasing the area ratio of maize to pear trees. Abstract:By using canopy-light-distribution-based photosynthetic model, and designing various combinations of model input parameters for compact and loose plant types of rice, quantitative analyses were made on the diurnal variation in extinction coefficient of canopy direct radiation with different plant types, the vertical distribution characteristics of direct radiation at noon and of photosynthetic rate within canopy, the characteristics of canopy photosynthetic rate with the changed leaf area index (LAI) under different radiant intensities, as well as the diurnal variation of canopy photosynthetic rate under different radiant intensities.The results showed that the high yield potential of compact plant type in rice relied on higher LAI, leaf photosynthetic efficiency, solar altitude and the intensity of solar radiation.These results would provide a support on cultivation for high yield and optimal design of plant type in rice crop.

Abstract:A number of field studies have reported very high rice yields in Taoyuan, Yunnan province, China, and the physiological and ecological factors associated with high yield have been explored. However, little attention has been paid to differences in plant type. The main objective of this study was to reveal the plant type characteristics associated with the high rice yield through the comparison of two sites: Taoyuan, Yunnan province and Nanjing, Jiangsu province, China. The physiological and environmental factors were also discussed. Field experiments were conducted at two sites in 2006 and 2007. Three Indica F1 hybrid varieties, Eryou 107, Xieyou 107 and Eryouhang 1 in 2006, Eryou 107 and Xieyou 107 in 2007 were grown at two sites under optimum crop management to achieve maximum attainable yields. Leaf area, leaf length, leaf width, leaf angles, specific leaf weight (SLW) and specific leaf nitrogen (SLN) at heading, yield and yield components at maturity were determined. Daily radiation, air temperature and relative humidity (RH) were monitored. The highest yield of 18.5tha−1 was achieved by Eryou 107 at Taoyuan in 2006, and average yield of all varieties at Taoyuan was 96% and 85% higher than Nanjing in 2006 and 2007, respectively. The higher yield at Taoyuan was attributed primarily to the larger sink size, which was mainly caused by the greater number of panicles per m2. Biomass production was greater at Taoyuan than at Nanjing in 2006 and 2007, while differences in harvest index were very small. Compared with Nanjing, the rice planted in Taoyuan has greater leaf area index about 10 with smaller area per stem, shorter, wider and thicker leaves and smaller leaf angles. These results indicate that in addition to the higher biomass accumulation (main physiological factor) and the intense solar radiation with the large diurnal temperature range (main environmental factor), the greater leaf area index (LAI) with smaller area per stem, may be an important morphological factor contributing to the high yield in Taoyuan.
