Abstract:During the past century,realism as a kind of art idea and creating method gets developed quite fast in China.In the early 20th century,realism was introduced to China from Europe.Realism was an important part in the trend of thought and practice in literature and art in China in the 20th century.This artistic idea and practice occupied the leading status from the founding of the PRC to early 1980s.Though with west modernist thinking introduced to China since middle 1980s,art creation presented in a multiple manner,realism still has been a significant creation method.Meanwhile,realistic art has been with language of multiple styles.Realism still has tenacious vitality.Presently,we need even more the sharp,critical and profound realism.

Abstract:This article addresses the ‘One Belt, One Road’ Initiative, abbreviated as the BRI, the flagship project of current Chinese foreign policy. In contrast with conventional positivist studies in international relations, this article adopts a discursive approach to reveal aspects of the often neglected political reality behind China’s BRI rhetoric. The article constructs a two-step framework for analysis of the discourse of China’s BRI: first, analysis of the production of discourse and second, analysis of the discourse–foreign policy nexus. This framework is then used to delve into the two main themes of development and geopolitics in BRI discourses. The production of these discourses is further associated with ongoing Chinese foreign policy efforts. This discursive analysis adds to our understanding of current Chinese foreign policy, particularly in terms of its main priorities and areas of focus, and of the possible ensuing implications.

Abstract:Cultural conflicts often give rise to a tendency to subject the absent other to a willful misrepresentation and reprehension,preventing people from getting at the real other.This tendency asserted itself in the 1949～1966 Chinese translations of Anglo-American realist literature.As a result of China's conflict with the West during this period,such translations tended to be manipulated to such an extent that they showed the absent Other in a negative light and distorted both the literary and the real-life world of the West.

Abstract:In the 1950-60s of political integration,China’s theorists and writers tried to seek the rationality of realistic classical tradition and May 4th Movement in China and the resources of folk culture.Meanwhile,they tried to endow the socialist realism with Chinese local characteristics.However,the history eventually opted for the former Soviet Union’s conceptual socialistic realism to dominate Chinese literature.To solve the conundrum of leadership and legitimacy of idealism in realistic theory,revolutionary romanticism will for sure compensate for realism.Therefore,the artistic concepts and techniques from the combination of revolutionary romanticism and revolutionary realism are sure to become the historical trend.But,in the "integration" process,we still could detect the inner differences in realism in its reestablishment today and the initiation and selfconsciousness among the theorists and writers.
From One-Level Games to Two-Level Games:The Evolution of China’s Foreign Policy-Making Model

Abstract:A two-level game model is applied to explain foreign policy-making in terms of the interactions between international and domestic politics. Using the two-level game model to observe China’s diplomacy, the authors discover that since the reform and opening-up, China’s foreign policy-making environment has changed in the direction of increased foreign exchanges, a pluralization of actors, and public politics. Thus, China’s foreign policy-making model has been transformed from an international-level game to an international and domestic game. In the process of decision-making, the decision makers have to face dual pressures from international and domestic politics and to make careful decisions under both pressures. An empirical analysis of China’s bargaining for accession to the GATT and WTO verifies this hypothesis.

Abstract:The present paper is part of a broader research "Language of a Big City: Media Urban Discourse in Russia and China". Its theoretical basis is situated in the contact zone between narratology, critical discourse analysis, semiotics and urban communication studies. The investigation is carried out on the example of two big non-capital cities – Volgograd and Tianjin, which represent the social processes typical of modern urban communities. The research model used for the study includes the following dimensions: 1) types of urban narratives; 2) narrator; 3) audience (reader / listener / viewer); 4) plot; 5) time; 6) space; 7) types of semiotic signs; 8) intertextual connections. The investigation proceeds from the idea about the textuality of the human mind, as well as the narrative ways of reality and identity construction. Multiple narratives can provide different urban history interpretations. Politicians use narratives to appropriate or reshape the past and the present as a common form of manipulation. A specific feature of urban historical narratives is that they do not possess fixed temporal boundaries and change due to the dynamics of urban social life. We argue that the stories that shape memories in the minds of general public are condensed versions of historical narratives based on the most intensely remembered facts, coloured with emotions and intensified by visual images, impressions and intertextual links. This idea emphasises the social responsibility of the creators of modern urban narratives in their different forms. The perspective of the research is to investigate the connection of these processes with Russian and Chinese mentality, values, logic of meaning-making and linguistic expression.

Abstract:The present deficit of effective theories of foreign policy,has led scholars of international relations theory to debate whether crafting simple and systematic theories of foreign policy is possible,and whether such theories stemming from structural realism are tenable.This article provides an in-depth assessment of both progress and gaps in the literature on foreign policy theory stemming from perspectives of offensive realism,defensive realism,neo-classical realism and other realist schools of thought.The article continues by attempting to develop a simple yet powerful theory which can enhance the explanatory power of structural realist theories of foreign policy.In closing,the article applies structural realist foreign policy theory to explain patterns in Chinese diplomacy and to illustrate the prospects for applying such theories to future foreign policy efforts.

Abstract:By analyzing "Qin Qiang" by Jia Ping-wa and "Brother" by Yu Hua,two influential novels in China,the tendencies of novel composition since the new century are discussed."Qin Qiang"is a "simulated realism"novel,in which society,nature,and life itself are simulated,while"Brother"is a "mysterious realism" novel,in which exaggerated and mysterious devices are employed.The aesthetic style presented by the two novels shows that the novels in the new century return to the real society,re-focus on the most important problems in contemporary life,and start to pay attention to the tendencies of spiritual state in contemporary life.Meanwhile,we need to have a fresh recognition of literature's realistic criticism.

Abstract:This work proposes to define the term and the connotations of magical realism from the perspective of the Chinese literary circle since the eighties; and based on the reading of this foreign literary phenomenon will explore the recreation of magical realism by Chinese writers through a series of general and specific approaches, to be specified, of Jia Pingwa, Tashi Dawa and Mo Yan; in this way, we will review both the development of trends in Chinese literature at the end of the 20th century and the attributes assigned to it, and at the same time we will reflect on the causes and limitations of this development model, which as a whole presents the contemporary reality of China linked to its national democratic revolution.

Realism in Whitlam's Foreign Policy

Abstract:Internationalism and nationalism are the two of the most dominant approaches scholars use to analyse Whitlam's foreign policy. Whitlam has been depicted as a leader pursuing a more independent Australian stance in international affairs in the era of "new nationalism" and an internationalist who led Australia's close engagement with the United Nations, its agencies and multilateralism. Both internationalism and nationalism are characteristically seen as special forms of the doctrine of idealism. However, Whitlam's foreign policy can be better understood as adhering closely to traditional realist theory. His handling of international affairs was not free of pragmatic political calculations: he promoted certain liberal ideals either when they did not matter or when Australia was irrelevant to the outcome. In this way, his foreign policy was liberalism in the abstract and realism in the hard reality.

Abstract:Due to a rapid economic growth over the past several decades China has significantly strengthened its international positions. This growth in its own turn was to a large extent due to a pragmatic and sound foreign strategy that the country has been pursuing since mid-1970s. However, in recent years both within and outside China there has been an on-going debate on the alleged radical transformation of the PRC’s perceptions of its national interests, its place in world politics, and its foreign policy. The variety of opinions becomes increasingly complicated as the number of discussants grows and new arguments are adduced in support of different positions. Whereas outside China this debate structures around the narrative of the Chinese assertiveness, within the country the main dispute is between the advocates of a traditional policy of ‘keeping a low profile’ (taoguang yanghui) and proponents of a new ‘striving for achievements’ (fenfa youwei) strategy. The present paper aims to provide a framework for a systematization of debates on the contemporary foreign policy of China in the English language academic literature based on two criteria: whether a researcher admits that the Chinese foreign policy is changing and how he assesses implications of these changes. Such an approach undoubtedly entails certain schematization of the presented views and arguments. However, it differs favorably from traditional, more narrative approaches to conceptualization of the debate since it establishes a clear, transparent theoretical framework aimed to identify the substantive core of the presented views. This, in turn, can bring about a better understanding of the current state and possible evolution of Chinese foreign policy in general. The author concludes that although these debates are far from being over, most researchers admit the PRC’s foreign policy strategy is undergoing a radical transformation. Since the latter half of 2000s there has been a steady trend in the foreign policy of China towards greater assertiveness. At the same time this transformation ensures continuity of the basic principles of Chinese diplomacy. All this means that further debates on the Chinese foreign policy should focus primarily on potential implications of this transformation for the PRC, the regional dynamics and international relations system as a whole.

Abstract:China has gotten much more involved in debating and solving international concerns in recent years. This is the concept behind China's new foreign policy line, Diplomatic Activism. President Xi Jinping's speech on “unprecedented changes not seen in hundreds of years” poses new and pressing questions for Chinese diplomats, politicians, and academics to consider, such as “What role should China play in the world?” and “How can we effectively solve the current complex international issues?” As a result, the Chinese leadership has called for “telling China’s stories well” with other countries in order to assume the role of a big power and offer their thoughts and potential answers to this tough situation. The article considers a number of issues related to the concept of “Telling China’s stories well”, ranging from the inability of Western theories and Chinese tradition to correctly interpret China's actions at this stage to the need to develop and systematize the Chinese experience based on Chinese historical experience, cultural and philosophical heritage, as well as the demands of the times, and so on. The “Four matters of confidence”, in particular, is examined as an important component of the “China’s stories”. The author came to a conclusion that the notion of “Telling China’s stories” is a historical occurrence, because the Chinese had previously learnt to do so in antiquity in order to guarantee their dominance over the surrounding vassal states. And, with the assistance of Edgar Snow, and others, the CCP effectively informed the world about communist actions in the new history of China. Today, the new China is actively “talking about its stories” in order to promote and contribute to the creation of a new world order based on cohabitation, mutual benefit etc., rather than Western-centrism. Magical Realism, Mythorealism, and the Representation of History in the Works of Yan Lianke

Abstract:As Yan Lianke explains in his poetological volume Discovering Fiction (Faxian xiaoshuo), mythorealism is a way of writing that aims at making an irrational reality accessible again by unveiling its “inner truth” and “inner causality.” Mythorealist works, like magical realist writing, convey an alternative conception of history, marked by frequent use of legends, myths, folklore—in short, what is usually called “the imaginary” as opposed to “the real.” Embracing this dichotomy, magical realism, in the vein of what Eugene Arva calls “traumatic imagination,” creates new meaning for historical events by raising the imaginary and the real to the same ontological level. Yan, in contrast, claims that mythorealism goes one step further, aspiring to fuse the two ontological states, striving to arrive at a new understanding of historical truths. By comparing the defining aspects of both magical realism and mythorealism, this chapter focuses not only on analyzing two of Yan's novels, The Explosion Chronicles and The Four Books, and their respective representation of history but also aims to answer the question of whether mythorealism is merely a local adaptation of magical realism or instead should be seen as a new literary mode.
On China’s Modern Foreign Policy Through the Prism of the Concepts of “Dao” and “Shi”

Abstract:China’s diplomatic approach under Xi Jinping is notably distinct from previous eras. Instead of pursuing the road of peaceful development, China appears to have abandoned its self-positioning as a “ancient civilized country” and has grown increasingly aggressive in the international community. Western academics and journalists have even coined the term “war wolf diplomacy” to characterize this trend. However, the author contends that this transformation is unavoidable since China is in the process of discovering itself, which implies that it is modifying its foreign policy in response to the genuine demands of its own development, defining its diplomatic “dao”. One of the most significant aspects in this procedure is the “shi” and only by accurately assessing, following, and planning the “shi” can the aforementioned duties be completed more effectively and finally achieve the aim of successful rising. In this paper, the author not only discusses classical Chinese philosophical writings in order to select key points from the sages’ thought for analyzing and explaining modern Chinese foreign policy, but also demonstrates some of the more successful theoretical constructions of the Chinese school of international relations theory. The author begins the first part by debating the “Way of the King” and “hegemony strategy”, pointing out that currently China’s foreign policy applies both concepts, with the former principle assisting China in implementing the fundamental principal of “not solving international problems by force”. While the “hegemonic” strategy is largely utilized to give a powerful reaction to external challenges, as indicated by the rising number of (counter)sanctions imposed in recent years. The author wants to present a reasonable explanation for China’s change in foreign policy style in the second half of the paper. According to him, this change represents a sound strategic decision by the Chinese leadership to “act in line with the ‘shi’”. However, because the transformation is still in its early stages, it is not yet feasible to foresee the eventual conclusion, therefore the overall trend in China’s foreign policy today should be judged in a way that does not unnecessarily laud or discredit it.

Abstract:Abstract Most analyses of China's foreign and security policies treat China as a unitary actor, assuming a cohesive grand strategy articulated by Beijing. I challenge this conventional wisdom, showing how Chinese provinces can affect the formulation and implementation of foreign policy. This contributes to existing research on the role of subnational actors in China, which has focused on how they shape domestic and economic policies. Using Hainan and Yunnan as case studies, I identify three mechanisms of provincial influence – trailblazing, carpetbagging, and resisting – and illustrate them with examples of key provincial policies. This analysis provides a more nuanced argument than is commonly found in international relations for the motivations behind evolving and increasingly activist Chinese foreign policy. It also has important policy implications for understanding and responding to Chinese behaviour, in the South China Sea and beyond. 摘要大多数关于中国外交和安全政策的分析把中国当成统一的行为者, 假设大战略是由中央政府勾出的。以改变这些传统的观点，本文考察了地方政府如何影响中国的外交决策与执行过程。这也对关于中国地方行为者的研究做出了贡献，因为它们通常只关注国内和经济政策。以海南省和云南省为案例，本文指出了地方影响的三个机制——开拓，投机，和抵抗——并调查了各种地方政策举例说明。比起国际关系中试图解释日益演变,日益积极的中国外交政策的动机的普遍说法，本文提供了更加精细的论据。这种分析对理解和应对中国的外交行为，包括南海问题等其他方面, 也具有重要的政策意义。

Abstract:In the past 10 years or so, gradual declassifications of official foreign policy documents in the Soviet Union, in China and in the United States have provided opportunities for research in the various fields concerned. More importantly, in the realm of China's international relations theory this has been a period for "letting a hundred flowers bloom'' through translation, study, argument, and reflection. Particularly worth noting is that in recent years, research in China's decision-making in foreign policy, which had hitherto been off-limits, has been gradually opening up, resulting in many publications. An example is China's Foreign Policy Decision-Making during the Cold War written by Professor Niu Jun of The School of International Studies of Peking University, and published by Japan's Chikura Publishing Company in September 2007.
