Abstract:Although work-family issues have received nascent attention in the hospitality industry due to their value to stakeholders (e.g., organizations, employees, and their families), the existing literature is not conclusive. And there is a need to seek ways of creating work-family support to help employees balance between work and family spheres. Taking a systematic review approach aided by structured synthesis and meta-analysis across disciplines, this research provides a comprehensive conceptual model of work-family support literature. The model includes formal work-family support policies, supporting theories, and outcomes on multiple levels, thus representing the relational mechanisms of key variables. By doing so, this study presents the current status of hospitality literature. It offers valuable future research avenues: increased academic attention to a need for more research on work-family support policy in the hospitality industry, a call for studies on childcare policies, and a comprehensive perspective of work-family issues by taking into account individual differences of employees, various countries as a research context, and far-reaching outcomes of work-family support policies.
A JD-R perspective for enhancing engagement through empowerment: A study on Indian hotel industry

Abstract:The study intends to examine the association between psychological empowerment and employee engagement with perceived organizational support and locus of control as moderating variables. The job demands-resources model is used to study the association among the variables. Data were collected from 224 hotel employees located in the vicinity of North India via survey. The structural equation modeling and moderation analysis was conducted to evaluate the hypothesized model.During the study, a significant effect of the dimensions of psychological empowerment on employee engagement was observed. Perceived organizational support and locus of control were found to act as significant moderators for psychological empowerment dimensions and employee engagement relationship. The Human Resource managers need to pay considerable heed to empower employees in the organizations as empowered employees contribute to better decision-making, thereby strengthening the organization's excellence. To improve organizational effectiveness, the HR and OD professionals should provide the best possible support to strengthen the personality attribute resulting in a highly engaged workforce. The study augments the literature of psychological empowerment by assessing the association between dimensions of psychological empowerment and employee engagement. The study is the first of its kind that has taken the locus of control and perceived organizational support as moderators in the Asian context.

Abstract:The purpose of the present systematic review is to examine the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model in order to pinpoint how applicable and relevant is the present theoretical framework in the 21st Century workplace environment. Initially, there will be an examination of the key concepts of the theory, followed by a brief investigation of the empirical validity and importance of the theory in the workplace environment. Then, there will be an empirical investigation of various studies of both cross-sectional and longitudinal nature in the form of a methodology, offering substantial empirical evidence that attests to the validity and effectiveness of the JD-R model in predicting work engagement and burnout-two independent and contrasting states of employee wellbeing, covering the entire spectrum from employee wellness to employee ill-health. We hope this review contributes to the advancement of the JD-R model, aiding researchers and practitioners to obtain a better understanding of the current state of the JD-R model, whilst also offering avenues for future development of the theory, ultimately resulting in a better prediction of employee wellbeing.

The study was carried out by utilizing the empirical information collected from 360 hotel employees from different 4-star and 5-star hotels in Pakistan. This study employs structural equation modeling to better assess the employee engagement phenomenon. Research shows that a proactive personality and professional identity positively affects self-efficacy and employee engagement. The findings also confirm that self-efficacy is an important aspect that promotes the relationship between proactive personality and professional identity and employee engagement. Abstract:This study was designed to identify the intricate associations among emotional rewards (compliment, opportunity, empowerment, and recognition), material rewards (promotion, certificate, incentive, and special leave), job satisfaction, burnout, affective commitment, job performance, and turnover intention in the hotel sector. A field survey method with a quantitative approach was used. Our results from multiple regression analysis revealed that emotional and material rewards and their dimensions are of importance in the formation of affective commitment, job performance, and turnover intention. In addition, findings from the series of mediation analysis revealed that job satisfaction and burnout played a complete/partial mediating role within the proposed theoretical framework. Overall, this research can help hotel researchers better understand the role of rewards and help practitioners develop an efficient reward system for hotel employees.

Abstract:Purpose A number of hospitality businesses are understaffed and are experiencing severe labor shortages, in various contexts. In many cases, hotels and restaurants are finding it difficult to retain and recruit motivated employees. In this light, this research uses key constructs related to the self-determination theory and integrates them with a responsible human resources management (HRM) measure, to investigate the antecedents of organizational commitment. The underlying objective of this study is to shed light on employee psychology and on responsible organizational behaviors in the hospitality industry. Design/methodology/approach Primary data were captured through an online questionnaire distributed via popular LinkedIn groups that represent hospitality employees. A composite-based structural equations modeling approach was used to confirm the reliability and validity of the chosen factors and to shed light on the causal paths of this contribution's proposed model. Findings The results indicate that there are highly significant direct and indirect effects in this study, particularly between extrinsic motivations – organizational commitment and between responsible HRM – organizational commitment. These relationships are mediated by intrinsic motivations. Research limitations/implications This contribution advances a robust responsible organizational behavior model comprising responsible HRM, extrinsic rewards, intrinsic motivation and organizational commitment. Practical implications This research implies that practitioners ought to incentivize and reward hardworking employees, in a commensurate manner, to offer them great working environments as well as appropriate conditions of employment, to enhance their loyalty, minimize turnover rates and to attract promising talent. Originality/value This empirical study incorporates a responsible HRM construct with extrinsic and intrinsic motivations. It confirms that they are significant antecedents of organizational commitment. Unlike previous research, this contribution focuses on employee psychology as well as on strategic organizational behaviors during a time when tourism businesses are experiencing an increase in demand for their services, in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. It raises awareness on the industry's perennial challenges in attracting and retaining employees.

Interventions to promote hotel workers' health: A scoping review

Abstract:Background: The hospitality industry employs millions of workers and is a key contributor to the US economy. Despite being essential drivers in the industry's success, hotel workers, particularly hotel housekeepers, are exposed to occupational hazards and experience disproportionate rates of injuries and chronic health conditions. Thus there is a significant need for health promotion efforts directed toward these workers. However, little is known about existing interventions targeting their health. Methods: We conducted a scoping review to identify and appraise workplace health promotion interventions targeting hotel employees. We performed a scoping review following the framework outlined by Arksey and O'Malley (2005). Our literature search process was recorded using the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Basic study information was compiled into a matrix table. Study quality was assessed using the template for intervention description and replication. Results: Eight unique interventions were identified, occurring at over 30 hotels with participants ranging between 16 and 1207 employees. Though many of the reported health outcomes were not statistically significant, studies reported results with clinical implications, including decreased numbers of injury claims, reduced anxiety, improvements in cardiovascular disease risk indicators, such as body mass index, and increased knowledge among participants. Conclusions: This is the first review to interrogate the literature on existing workplace interventions targeting the health of hotel workers. While some studies found significant improvements in health outcomes, few conducted rigorous program evaluation. The results highlight the need for more and effective interventions targeting these at-risk workers.
Why and How Does Empowering Leadership Promote Proactive Work Behavior? An Examination with a Serial Mediation Model among Hotel Employees

Abstract:With the increasing competition in contemporary enterprise, sustainable human resource management is a powerful resource for workplace mental health. On the basis of job demands-recourses theory and conservation of resources theory, this study examined the relationship between empowering leadership and employees’ proactive work behavior. It also explored how job design inspires employees to be embedded in their work and to exhibit proactive work behavior. In addition, the research probed the mediating roles of job characteristics and job embeddedness in a serial mediation model within an integrated model. Data were collected from 461 employees of three- to five-star hotels through stratified random sampling. Results indicated that (1) empowering leadership has positive influences on job characteristics and proactive work behavior; (2) job characteristics have a positive influence on job embeddedness; (3) job embeddedness has a positive influence on proactive work behavior; (4) job characteristics mediate the effect of empowering leadership on proactive work behavior; (5) job embeddedness mediates the effect of empowering leadership on proactive work behavior; and (6) job characteristics and job embeddedness jointly mediate the effect of empowering leadership on proactive work behavior by bootstrapping analyses. Accordingly, this study suggests that promoting sustainable human resource management is needed for human health and organizational value at work, both of which enable empowering leadership to improve proactive work behavior via job characteristics and job embeddedness. The theoretical and managerial implications of empirical findings are also discussed.

Abstract:Employee well-being is very important to encourage positive performance, which in turn will encourage employee behavior. Employee well-being is a challenge facing the hotel industry today. Employee well-being is the main thing to consider for the hotel industry for business sustainability. This research aims to examine the influence of job crafting and work engagement on employee well-being. The research employed a quantitative approach through a cross-sectional survey, targeting managerial-level employees from five-star hotels in Jakarta. A purposive sampling technique was employed, selecting 247 participants who met the criteria of having a minimum of two years of work experience and being currently employed in the hotel industry. SmartPls was used for the statistical analysis, which followed the PLS-SEM method. The findings revealed that job crafting and work engagement have positive effects on employee well-being. This study suggests practical implications of enhancing organizational support for job crafting initiatives. Future research could consider the broader context of the hotel industry and examine other potential variables that can influence the effectiveness of job crafting.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to examine extrinsic and intrinsic motivations as the antecedents of work engagement and to empirically test the motivation crowding theory using hospitality employees. The findings showed that intrinsic motivation played an important role in improving employees’ work engagement. The study also found that there was no indication that employees’ intrinsic motivation diminished when extrinsic motivation entered. It is also suggested that employers need to understand that creating a comfortable workplace environment and making jobs more interesting and meaningful will increase employees’ intrinsic motivation, which will help employees to engage more at work. Motivational antecedents of work engagement have been rarely studied and no studies have been conducted to research impacts of extrinsic and intrinsic motivators on employees’ work engagement in the hospitality industry, particularly in small restaurant businesses. In addition, empirical studies on motivation crowding theory are needed due to the inconclusive results.

Abstract:Considering the vulnerable climatic conditions in most parts of the planet, a successful transition toward a carbon-free future is a critical challenge worldwide. In this respect, around 35% of the world's total greenhouse gas emission (GHG) is associated with the power sector (especially electrical energy). To this end, a vast of electrical energy has been used by the people in buildings. Specifically, a significant amount of energy in buildings is used for heating, cooling, and ventilation. While the available literature highlights the importance of neat, clean, and green electrical energy for the decarbonization of society, a critical gap exists in such literature. That is, most of the literature under this stream deals with the supply side (production) of electrical energy, while the demand side (consumption at an individual level) was neglected. To bridge this critical knowledge gap, this study investigates how the CSR engagement of a hotel organization can promote the energy-related pro-environmental behavior (ERPEB) among the employees with the intervening effect of employees' environmental commitment (EMEC) and Green intrinsic motivation (GRIM). Further, the conditional indirect role of altruistic values was also tested in this study. The data were collected from different hotel employees in Pakistan with the help of a self-administered questionnaire. We tested the hypothesized relationship through structural equation modeling (SEM). The results confirmed that CSR can be a potential motivator to impact the ERPEB of employees, while EMEC and GRIM mediated this relationship significantly. The findings of this study also confirmed the conditional indirect role of altruistic values. These findings offer various theoretical and practical contributions which are conversed in detail.

Abstract:Employers increasingly attempt to create the right environments where employees experience work–life balance. At the same time, organizations concerned with their organizational-level outcomes encourage improving employee work engagement. The question becomes, how do employee work–life balance and work engagement relate to one another? A similar question concerns human resource development (HRD) practitioners who seek to help both employees with balancing their work and life and employers with their organizational goals. A body of literature has examined the relationship between work–life balance and work engagement, which we review in this article. We identify and synthesize the findings of 37 articles empirically investigating the relationship between work–life balance and work engagement. The findings showed the various antecedents, mediators, and moderators that depict the relationships between work engagement and work–life balance. Furthermore, we provide insight into HRD scholarship regarding how to clarify the direction of causality between two concepts, which has been largely left inconclusive. Finally, our article proposes insightful directions for future research and practice in the field of HRD.

Abstract:Research background: Despite the dynamically growing cross-sectional academic studies conducted on various aspects related to physical and mental workloads in the context of workplace safety, there is still room for further in-depth analyses of how these workloads affect employees' behavior and well-being. This phenomenon is of particular interest in the case of hospitality, where hotels should recognize the workloads imposed on their employees, since they are considered the most critical and influential stressors in the workplace. Purpose of the article: Based on the conservation of resources (COR) theory, our study aims to examine how hotel employees' physical and mental workloads affect their well-being and safe behaviors. The study also investigates how employee well-being and psychological resilience play a role in these patterns. Methods: The study employs an experience-sampling methodology to assess the physical and mental workloads of a group of full-time employees working in luxury hotels in the USA. Findings & value added: The findings derived from Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) reveal that both physical and mental workloads negatively impact overall well-being and safe behaviors. Additionally, physical workload influences mental workload. Also, employee well-being has been identified as a mediating factor in the relationship between workloads, psychological resilience, and safe behaviors. Notably, psychological resilience has not exhibited a moderating effect. This study expands on the COR theory by examining its impact on the hospitality industry. The study has developed and validated a model for assessing hotel employees' physical workload. Moreover, it emphasizes the significance of employees' well-being and psychological resilience in promoting safe behaviors in hotels. Therefore, this model is a significant step forward toward effectively measuring and maintaining the overall well-being and safe behaviors of employees in the hospitality industry. Furthermore, the value of the research is enhanced by surveying hotel employees directly rather than relying on subjective opinions from management about employee involvement in workplace health and safety. This approach avoids the bias often present in management assessments and provides a more accurate depiction of employee participation.

Abstract:Purpose The present study is intended to examine the association between work passion (WP) (obsessive and harmonious) and job satisfaction (JS) of hotel employees in India. It further examines the mediating influence of psychological empowerment (PE) and organizational identification (OI) on the relationship. The study has taken conservation of resources (COR) perspectives to support the association. Design/methodology/approach This research work has used a time lag survey on a sample of 290 employees belonging to hotels located in four states of India. Structural equation modeling was utilized to test the hypothesized relationship. Findings Results derived from path analysis proved the hypothesized relationships. OI and PE were found to be the complementary mediators between workplace passion and JS. Research limitations/implications The study was conducted on hotels, the research can be further expanded to other industries. Future research might examine the effect of increased WP, strong organizational identity and increased JS on some of the citizenship behaviors. The present study data were collected using self-report questionnaires; no data were collected to find out whether the passion for work or stronger OI with the hotel is an outcome of some unique initiative taken by their respective hotels. Practical implications Top officials can promote entrepreneurial culture, form employee-friendly policies, develop a climate of trust which in return will facilitate the cognitive as well as emotional satisfaction with the organization fostering WP and JS. Originality/value The researchers in past have mostly studied the harmonious passion and JS association but there is a dearth of studies exploring the obsessive passion and JS relationship in the Indian context. In addition, associating OI and PE in predicting JS can also add as a unique contribution to the literature.

Abstract:Employee turnover causes various organizational disruptions, including economic and social loss and a deficit in organizational knowledge-skill inventory. Considering different forms of organizational disruptions associated with employee turnover, the contemporary literature on organizational sciences has shown serious concern in dealing with the challenge of employee turnover. However, shockingly, the employee turnover rate in the tourism and hospitality sector has been reported to be critically high even at a global level. Moreover, considering the customer-facing nature of this industry, employee turnover has more consequences for the tourism and hospitality sector compared to other segments of the economy. Past literature has acknowledged the role of employee-related corporate social responsibility (ERCSR) activities of an organization in influencing employee behavior. However, a critical knowledge gap in this domain still exists. That is, most of the prior studies tested the impact of ERCSR on positive employee behavior and did not test how ERCSR engagement in an organization may reduce employee turnover intentions, especially in a hospitality context. To fill this knowledge gap, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between ERCSR and employee turnover intentions in a hospitality sector of a developing country. Additionally, the mediating roles of quality of work life and intrinsic motivation were also tested in the above-proposed relationship. The hotel employees were the respondents in this survey who provided their responses related to the study variables on a self-administered questionnaire (n = 278). A hypothetical model was developed and analyzed with the help of the structural equation modeling technique. The results confirmed that ERCSR orientation of a hotel organization significantly reduces the turnover intentions of employees, whereas both quality of work life and intrinsic motivation buffered this association by producing mediating effects. These findings have different theoretical and practical implications, among which the most important implication is to realize the key role of ERCSR in reducing employees' turnover intentions in a hospitality context. Various other implications are discussed in detail.

Abstract:The aim of the current research is to foster the economic performance of a hotel enterprise through employee-level corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities with the mediating effect of work engagement (W.E) and quality of work-life (QWL). A hypothesized model was developed for this purpose. The data were collected from the hotel employees of a developing economy (n = 396). The hypothesized relations were tested by employing the structural equation modeling technique. The current work’s statistical outcomes validated CSR’s seminal role to influence W.E and QWL perceptions of hotel employees, which eventually contribute to the economic performance of a hotel enterprise. The findings of the current analysis have different theoretical and practical implications. To the extent of theory, the current work advances the fields of enterprise management and employee wellbeing from an individual-level perspective of CSR. Practically, the current study helps the hotel management to realize that a carefully planned CSR strategy not only improves the economic performance of a hotel enterprise through employees but also helps to fulfill its social responsibility, hence leading a hotel enterprise towards a win-win situation.

Abstract:Purpose: The primary objective of this research is to conduct an in-depth exploration and analysis of the role of job satisfaction within Goa's hospitality industry. This study recognizes the pivotal influence of employee contentment in various facets of the sector, notably in enhancing guest services, boosting the industry's contribution to local tourism, and fostering sustainable development practices. The research aims to deliver a holistic appraisal of job satisfaction in Goa, encompassing its positive impacts, potential drawbacks, and strategic significance. This encompasses not only the financial prosperity of the industry but also the responsible management of resources, environmental conservation, cultural preservation, and the creation of a memorable and enriching experience for tourists. Targeted towards stakeholders in Goa's hospitality sector — including business owners, managers, policy makers, and academic researchers — this study seeks to provide valuable insights. These insights are intended to inform and guide strategic decision-making processes, aiming to optimize the benefits of employee satisfaction. Ultimately, this will contribute to achieving the dual goals of sustainable development and promoting Goa as a premier tourism destination. Design/Methodology/Approach: This study adopts a qualitative research methodology to delve into the nuances of job satisfaction within Goa's hospitality industry, focusing on its various impacts including benefits, limitations, and potential challenges. It aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the Goan hospitality landscape, drawing on local Hotel and Hospitality Sector insights. The research methodology incorporates a range of analytical tools, including the ABCD Framework, to explore the link between employee satisfaction and sustainable development in this sector. Data for this study are sourced from diverse online platforms, including websites, academic journals, essays, and digital publications. The approach involves a comparative and evaluative analysis of different facets of the hotel industry, paying special attention to issues pertinent to the sector. By employing a qualitative lens, this research aspires to capture the complex interplay between job satisfaction and its impact on sustainable growth within the unique setting of Goa's hospitality industry. Findings/Results: The findings from this study offer crucial insights into the role of job satisfaction within the Goan hospitality sector. Job satisfaction emerged as a key factor in enhancing guest experiences, contributing to increased repeat visits and favorable reviews. Furthermore, high levels of job satisfaction were found to significantly reduce employee turnover. This results in cost savings for businesses and fosters a stable and experienced workforce, which is instrumental in maintaining quality service and operational efficiency in the hospitality industry. These results underscore the importance of employee contentment as a strategic asset in driving both customer satisfaction and sustainable business practices. Originality/Value: Analyzing the importance of job satisfaction in Goa's hospitality sector from the perspective of the ABCD framework adds a unique and beneficial layer to the area. Abstract:This systematic review of forty articles aims to synthesise the increasing number of work done on work engagement and job characteristics by analysing the preferred sources from 2017 to 2021. The research studies were carefully chosen according to the researcher's inclusion criteria. The all-encompassing review of the literature has included an introduction,significance, and review of 'job characteristics theory, 'job demand theory', and elaborates innovative definition of 'work engagement' in the light of the literature review. The analyses were performed in terms of annual scientific production, most relevant sources, Bradford's law, source growth, tree map, and word dynamics through biblioshiny. MS Excel was used to evaluate the research studies. This systematic review will be beneficial to organisations and policymakers to plan the characteristics of jobs effectively to promote employee participation. Emphasis on the employees' work engagement and job characteristics will support apprehending the dream of a perfect workplace.
Does employee resilience work? The effects of job insecurity on psychological withdrawal behavior and work engagement

Abstract:Purpose The onset of a health crisis has substantially crippled the hotel industry, causing employees' fears of an imminent job loss. This study investigates how hotel employees' perceived job insecurity affects work engagement and psychological withdrawal behavior. Additionally, it explores the mediating role of work engagement between job insecurity and psychological withdrawal behavior, along with examining the moderating effects of employee resilience on the links between job insecurity, work engagement and psychological withdrawal behavior. Design/methodology/approach Adopting simple random sampling, a total of 357 completed questionnaires by Thai frontline hotel employees in 36 four- and five-star international hotel chains in Phuket, Thailand, were analyzed. Data analyses were undertaken by SPSS version 25.0 and partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) version 4.0.9.1. Findings Results indicate that perceived job insecurity diminishes work engagement and leads to psychological withdrawal behavior. Work engagement is found to partially mediate the connection between job insecurity and psychological withdrawal behavior. Furthermore, employee resilience lessens the impact of job insecurity on work engagement while reinforcing the link between work engagement and psychological withdrawal behavior. Practical implications The study findings offer valuable practical implications, illustrating how Thai hospitality firms can cultivate effective talent management practices to develop and enhance employees' skills, engagement and enthusiasm in their work. These practices can assist employees in coping with and managing their perceptions of job insecurity during turbulent times and uncontrollable crises. Originality/value This study creates a compelling framework to elucidate the connections among COVID-19-intensified job insecurity, work-related outcomes and personal factors. It introduces a previously underexamined perspective that enriches the authors' theoretical comprehension of how personal resources, like employee resilience, serve as protective factors, shaping employee behavior and performance amidst job insecurity. Moreover, the study advocates for a synthesizing approach, emphasizing the integration of various theoretical perspectives and past literature, particularly when research gaps cannot be sufficiently addressed by a single theory.

Abstract:To capture the dynamic nature of frontline employees’ subjective well-being (SWB) and turnover intention in the hotel industry, this study used Affective Events Theory (Weiss & Cropanzano, 1996) and the unfolding model of employee voluntary turnover (Lee & Mitchell, 1994) to argue the short-term variability in SWB and turnover intention. Using the job demandsresources model (JD-R model) as the framework, this study examined the role of daily jobdemands (challenge stressors, hindrance stressors, and emotional dissonance) and the role of daily job resources (supervisor support, coworker support, and job autonomy). Given that hotel employees work with different supervisors and co-workers and face various guest situations during each shift, these employees may face high work stress and workload. Furthermore, employees in this industry are often requested to perform non-routine tasks. Therefore, their work is highly associated with high job demands and resource variability. Moreover, the study results stress the importance of the moderating role of day-level job resources and the multilevel moderating effects of employees’ individual levels of resilience and self-efficacy. The design of the study employed an experience sampling method. Participants were employees who are in guest-facing positions from food & beverage and front office departments in full-service or luxury hotels in the United States. Sixty-five participants completed a one-time baseline survey and a daily diary study twice per day for at least five working days, resulting in a total of 416 day-level observations. The data structure is day nested within each person. The multi-level data was analyzed by using multilevel linear modeling. In summary, this study shows that SWB and turnover intention may not always be stable phenomena among hotel employees due to the daily influences of job demands and job resources. In addition, both personal resources and daily job resources were found to mitigate the negative daily influences of job demands. This study helps managers to better understand employees’ feelings on a daily basis and apply strategies for daily management of employee SWB and turnover intention.
