Abstract:A large portion of crops are lost to plant diseases each year worldwide. In this study, a mobile application for detecting and classifying plant disease using deep learning object detection model was developed. The proposed mobile application utilizes Faster R-CNN object detector with Inception-v2 backbone network to achieve robust and efficient detection. Experiments on grape disease images demonstrated that the proposed application is able to achieve an accuracy of 97.9% while running solely on a smartphone without connecting to a server. The proposed mobile application can serve as an aid to farmers and crop growers who have little or no knowledge about plant diseases for early disease detection and control and therefore can reduce losses and prevent further spreading of the disease.

Abstract:Crop disease serves as a major threat to the farming sector. Due to the increased utilization of smartphones, it is now possible to leverage the technology and apply it for the betterment of the farming sector. The agricultural sector struggles in supporting the ever-growing global population, moreover, plant disease reduces the amount of food production and quality of the food. Losses may be a cataclysm, but on an average, it affects almost 45% of the production of major crops. Farmers often spend a lots of money on disease management of the crops and each crop is vulnerable to a particular disease that affects the quality and final yield. But, lack of proper technology, results in poor disease management, soil pollution, and the outcome may be devastating. In addition, plant diseases also affect the food chain supply, destroy the natural ecosystem and contribute to exacerbating environmental issues. These problems can be eradicated by adopting deep learning algorithms to analyze and visualize the current condition of the crops. With application built using deep learning, it is now possible to accurately detect crop diseases thereby reducing the effects of crop disease on food supply. Thus, correct disease detection followed by the management of identified diseases, thereby increasing food production and maintaining the quality of the food is achieved by deep neural networks. The proposed model uses MobileNet architecture along with complex hidden layers fine-tuned with Keras tuner on the dataset containing 12,318 images. We proposed an enhanced MobileNet scalable model with better generalization on large sized unified dataset constructed from various smaller sized dataset for better features' extraction and representation. The proposed model classifies the input in 64 different classes for 22 different sets of crops and achieved an accuracy of 95.94%. Further, the model is inculcated with our Android application – Plantscape for a better user experience fusioned with serene user interactions.

Abstract:In this technologically advanced era, with the proliferation of artificial intelligence, many mobile apps are available for plant disease detection, diagnosis, and treatment, each with a variety of features. These apps need to be categorized and reviewed following a proper framework that ensures their quality. This study aims to present an approach to evaluating plant disease detection mobile apps, which includes providing ratings of distinct features of the apps and insights into the exploitation of artificial intelligence used in plant disease detection. The applicability of these apps for pathogen or disease detection, identification, and treatment will be assessed along with significant insights garnered. For this purpose, plant disease detection apps were searched in three prominent app stores (the Google Play store, Apple App store, and Microsoft store) using a set of keywords. A total of 606 apps were found and from them, 17 relevant apps were identified based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The selected apps were reviewed by three raters using our devised app rating scale. To validate the rater agreements on the ratings, inter-rater reliability is computed alongside their intra-rater reliability, ensuring their rating consistency. Also, the internal consistency of our rating scale was evaluated against all selected apps. User comments from the app stores are collected and analyzed to understand their expectations and views. Following the rating procedure, most apps earned acceptable ratings in software quality characteristics such as aesthetics, usability, and performance but gained poor ratings in AI-based advanced functionality, which is the key aspect of this study. However, most of the apps cannot be used as a complete solution to plant disease detection, diagnosis, and treatment. Only one app, Plantix–your crop doctor, could successfully identify plants from images, detect diseases, maintain a rich plant database, and suggest potential treatments for the disease presented. It also provides a community where plant lovers can communicate with each other to gain additional benefits. In general, all existing apps need to improve functionalities, user experience, and software quality. Therefore, a set of design considerations has been proposed for future app improvements.

Abstract:This paper presents a framework which uses computer vision algorithms to standardise images and analyse them for identifying crop diseases automatically. The tools are created to bridge the information gap between farmers, advisory call centres and agricultural experts using the images of diseased/infected crop captured by mobile-phones. These images are generally sensitive to a number of factors including camera type and lighting. We therefore propose a technique for standardising the colour of plant images within the context of the advisory system. Subsequently, to aid the advisory process, the disease recognition process is automated using image processing in conjunction with machine learning techniques. We describe our proposed leaf extraction, affected area segmentation and disease classification techniques. The proposed disease recognition system is tested using six mango diseases and the results show over 80% accuracy. The final output of our system is a list of possible diseases with relevant management advice.

Abstract:Farming has a plethora of difficult responsibilities, and plant monitoring is one of them. There is also an urgent need to increase the number of alternative techniques for detecting plant diseases, which is now lacking. The agriculture and agricultural support sectors in India provide employment for the great majority of the country's people. In India, the agricultural production of the country is directly connected to the country's economic growth rate. In order to sustain healthy plant development, a variety of processes must be followed, including consideration of environmental factors and water supply management for the optimal production of crops. It is inefficient and uncertain in its outcomes to use the traditional method of watering a lawn. The devastation of more than 18% of the world's agricultural produce is caused by disease attacks on an annual basis. Because it is difficult to execute these activities manually, identifying plant diseases is essential to decreasing losses in the agricultural product business. In addition to diagnosing a wide range of plant ailments, our method also includes the identification of infections as a prophylactic step. Below is a detailed description of a farm-based module that includes numerous cloud data centers and data conversion devices for accurately monitoring and managing farm information and environmental elements. This procedure involves imaging the plant's visually obvious signs in order to identify disease. It is recommended that the therapy be used in conjunction with an application to minimize any harm. Increased productivity as a result of the suggested approach would help both the agricultural and irrigation sectors. The plant area module is fitted with a mobile camera that captures images of all of the plants in the area, and all of the plants' information is saved in a database, which is accessible from any computer with Internet access. It is planned to record information on the plant's name, the type of illness that has been afflicted, and an image of the plant. In a wide range of applications, bots are used to collect images of various plants as well as to prevent disease transmission. To ensure that all information given is retained on the Internet, data is collected and stored in cloud storage as it becomes essential to regulate the condition. According to our findings from our research on wide images of healthy and ill fruit and plant leaves, real-time diagnosis of plant leaf diseases may be done with 98.78% accuracy in a laboratory environment. We utilized 40,000 photographs and then analyzed 10,000 photos to construct a DCDM deep learning model, which was then used to train additional models on the data set. Using a cloud-based image diagnostic and classification service, consumers may receive information about their condition in less than a second on average, with the process requiring only 0.349 s on average.

Abstract:The hydroponic farming industry is growing rapidly, and it can solve major world food crisis problems. Health monitoring and diseases identification of the plant is very important for agriculture. Monitoring of health and disease on plant plays an important role in successful cultivation of crops in the farm. Identification of the plant diseases is the key to preventing the losses in the yield and quantity of the agricultural product. It is very difficult to monitor the plant diseases manually. Some diseases spread so rapidly they can affect an entire plant and crop. Early detection of a diseases can prevent an entire crop from harm and attention a farmer would need to place on their system. The proposed system is capable of detecting the disease at the earlier stage as soon as it occurs on the leaf, hence saving the loss and reducing the dependency on the expert to a certain extent is possible. The aim of this study is to design, implement and evaluate an image processing-based software solution for automatic detection and classification of plant leaf diseases. This technology helps the farmer to identify what type of diseases that the plant is being affected. The image has been processed in MATLAB and the status of the leaf has been identified with the help of neural network classification. Then the environment circumstances such as temperature, humidity and moisture has been monitored. After the image has been processed in the software it sends SMS to the user by using Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM). The SMS contains leaf status, particular solution and environmental conditions.
Paddy Disease Detection and Classification Using Computer Vision Techniques: A Mobile Application to Detect Paddy Disease

Abstract:Plant diseases significantly impact our food supply, causing problems for farmers, economies reliant on agriculture, and global food security. Accurate and timely plant disease diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment and minimizing yield losses. Despite advancements in agricultural technology, a precise and early diagnosis remains a challenge, especially in underdeveloped regions where agriculture is crucial and agricultural experts are scarce. However, adopting Deep Learning applications can assist in accurately identifying diseases without needing plant pathologists. In this study, the effectiveness of various computer vision models for detecting paddy diseases is evaluated and proposed the best deep learning-based disease detection system. Both classification and detection using the Paddy Doctor dataset, which contains over 20,000 annotated images of paddy leaves for disease diagnosis are tested and evaluated. For detection, we utilized the YOLOv8 model-based model were used for paddy disease detection and CNN models and the Vision Transformer were used for disease classification. The average mAP50 of 69% for detection tasks was achieved and the Vision Transformer classification accuracy was 99.38%. It was found that detection models are effective at identifying multiple diseases simultaneously with less computing power, whereas classification models, though computationally expensive, exhibit better performance for classifying single diseases. Additionally, a mobile application was developed to enable farmers to identify paddy diseases instantly. Experiments with the app showed encouraging results in utilizing the trained models for both disease classification and treatment guidance.

Abstract:Identification of plant disease is usually done through visual inspection or during laboratory examination which causes delays resulting in yield loss by the time identification is complete. On the other hand, complex deep learning models perform the task with reasonable performance but due to their large size and high computational requirements, they are not suited to mobile and handheld devices. Our proposed approach contributes automated identification of plant diseases which follows a sequence of steps involving pre-processing, segmentation of diseased leaf area, calculation of features based on the Gray-Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM), feature selection and classification. In this study, six color features and twenty-two texture features have been calculated. Support vector machines is used to perform one-vs-one classification of plant disease. The proposed model of disease identification provides an accuracy of 98.79% with a standard deviation of 0.57 on tenfold cross-validation. The accuracy on a self-collected dataset is 82.47% for disease identification and 91.40% for healthy and diseased classification. The reported performance measures are better or comparable to the existing approaches and highest among the feature-based methods, presenting it as the most suitable method to automated leaf-based plant disease identification. This prototype system can be extended by adding more disease categories or targeting specific crop or disease categories.

Abstract:This paper aims to assist novice gardeners in identifying plant diseases to circumvent misdiagnosing their plants and to increase general horticultural knowledge for better plant growth. In this paper, we develop a mobile plant care support system (“AgroAId”), which incorporates computer vision technology to classify a plant’s [species–disease] combination from an input plant leaf image, recognizing 39 [species-and-disease] classes. Our method comprises a comparative analysis to maximize our multi-label classification model’s performance and determine the effects of varying the convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures, transfer learning approach, and hyperparameter optimizations. We tested four lightweight, mobile-optimized CNNs—MobileNet, MobileNetV2, NasNetMobile, and EfficientNetB0—and tested four transfer learning scenarios (percentage of frozen-vs.-retrained base layers): (1) freezing all convolutional layers; (2) freezing 80% of layers; (3) freezing 50% only; and (4) retraining all layers. A total of 32 model variations are built and assessed using standard metrics (accuracy, F1-score, confusion matrices). The most lightweight, high-accuracy model is concluded to be an EfficientNetB0 model using a fully retrained base network with optimized hyperparameters, achieving 99% accuracy and demonstrating the efficacy of the proposed approach; it is integrated into our plant care support system in a TensorFlow Lite format alongside the front-end mobile application and centralized cloud database. Finally, our system also uses the collective user classification data to generate spatiotemporal analytics about regional and seasonal disease trends, making these analytics accessible to all system users to increase awareness of global agricultural trends.

Abstract:Crop diseases are a major threat to food security and their rapid identification is important to prevent yield loss. Swift identification of these diseases are difficult due to the lack of necessary infrastructure. Recent advances in computer vision and increasing penetration of smartphones have paved the way for smartphone-assisted disease identification. Most of the plant diseases leave particular artifacts on the foliar structure of the plant. This study was conducted in 2020 at Department of Computer Science and Engineering, University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan to check leaf-based plant disease identification. This study provided a deep neural network-based solution to foliar disease identification and incorporated image quality assessment to select the image of the required quality to perform identification and named it Agricultural Pathologist (Agro Path). The captured image by a novice photographer may contain noise, lack of structure, and blur which result in a failed or inaccurate diagnosis. Moreover, AgroPath model had 99.42% accuracy for foliar disease identification. The proposed addition can be especially useful for application of foliar disease identification in the field of agriculture.

Abstract:In recent years, the integration of smartphone technology with novel sensing technologies, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Deep Learning (DL) algorithms has revolutionized crop pest and disease surveillance. Efficient and accurate diagnosis is crucial to mitigate substantial economic losses in agriculture caused by diseases and pests. An innovative Apple® and AndroidTM mobile application for citizen science has been developed, to enable real-time detection and identification of plant leaf diseases and pests, minimizing their impact on horticulture, viticulture, and olive cultivation. Leveraging DL algorithms, this application facilitates efficient data collection on crop pests and diseases, supporting crop yield protection and cost reduction in alignment with the Green Deal goal for 2030 by reducing pesticide use. The proposed citizen science tool involves all Farm to Fork stakeholders and farm citizens in minimizing damage to plant health by insect and fungal diseases. It utilizes comprehensive datasets, including images of various diseases and insects, within a robust Decision Support System (DSS) where DL models operate. The DSS connects directly with users, allowing them to upload crop pest data via the mobile application, providing data-driven support and information. The application stands out for its scalability and interoperability, enabling the continuous integration of new data to enhance its capabilities. It supports AI-based imaging analysis of quarantine pests, invasive alien species, and emerging and native pests, thereby aiding post-border surveillance programs. The mobile application, developed using a Python-based REST API, PostgreSQL, and Keycloak, has been field-tested, demonstrating its effectiveness in real-world agriculture scenarios, such as detecting Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) infestation in tomato cultivations. The outcomes of this study in T. absoluta detection serve as a showcase scenario for the proposed citizen science tool’s applicability and usability, demonstrating a 70.2% accuracy (mAP50) utilizing advanced DL models. Notably, during field testing, the model achieved detection confidence levels of up to 87%, enhancing pest management practices.

Abstract:Detecting diseases is a vital and crucial step in maintaining healthy, high-yielding plants. The challenge of manually identifying infections is arduous as well. The proposed work is to diagnose plant leaf diseases and discuss their origins and remedies. Image processing is used to discover the infected leaf and provide remedial measures through a mobile robot application. The use of machine learning techniques allows for the detection of leaf diseases using the support vector machine model, the K nearest neighbor model, and the Naïve Bayes classification to categorize the sample leaves. In this paper, the Momordica charantia leaf and the common four diseases dataset are developed, and a classification model is developed to identify and categorize leaf curl, downy mildew, powdery mildew, and angular leaf spot. Based on the disease classification, appropriate chemical pesticides are sprayed by controlling the servo actuated valve in the proposed agriculture robot, which is controlled and validated. The result reveals that the proposed approach has an average accuracy of 82% in identifying the disease type that remains more prevalent in Momordica charantia leaves than other compared classification algorithms.

Abstract:India loses 35% of the annual crop yield due to plant diseases. Early detection of plant diseases remains difficult due to the lack of lab infrastructure and expertise. In this paper, we explore the possibility of computer vision approaches for scalable and early plant disease detection. The lack of availability of sufficiently large-scale non-lab data set remains a major challenge for enabling vision based plant disease detection. Against this background, we present PlantDoc: a dataset for visual plant disease detection. Our dataset contains 2,598 data points in total across 13 plant species and up to 17 classes of diseases, involving approximately 300 human hours of effort in annotating internet scraped images. To show the efficacy of our dataset, we learn 3 models for the task of plant disease classification. Our results show that modelling using our dataset can increase the classification accuracy by up to 31%. We believe that our dataset can help reduce the entry barrier of computer vision techniques in plant disease detection.

Abstract:In smart agriculture, identifying plant illnesses early is vital because it prevents diseases from spreading. A novel statistical approach-based plant disease detection system is developed to identify and categorize diseases early. A novel statistical threshold value is utilized to divide apart the sick portion of the leaf, and a co-occurrence matrix with grey levels is employed to gather the properties. The system uses a visual sensor to record leaf images from the field. The system is tested on publicly available datasets and real-time images captured from fields. Classification is carried out using the support vector machine to achieve higher accuracy. Performance metrics like classification and detection accuracy are used to assess the highlighted system's effectiveness. The suggested method outperforms the existing state-of-the-art methods with an average detection accuracy of 98.43% and classification accuracy of about 99.9%.

Abstract:In this paper, we address a comprehensive study on disease recognition and classification of plant leafs using image processing methods. The traditional manual visual quality inspection cannot be defined systematically as this method is unpredictable and inconsistent. Moreover, it involves a remarkable amount of expertise in the field of plant disease diagnostics (phytopathology) in addition to the disproportionate processing times. Hence, image processing has been applied for the recognition of plant diseases. The paper has been divided into two main categories viz. detection and classification of leafs. A comprehensive discussion on the diseases detection and classification performance is presented based on analysis of previously proposed state of art techniques particularly from 1997 to 2016. Finally, discussed and classify the challenges and some prospects for future improvements in this space.

Abstract:Abstract: Agriculture is the backbone of every country in the world. In India, most of the rural population still depends on agriculture. The agricultural sector provides major employment in rural areas. Furthermore, it contributes a significant amount to India’s gross domestic product (GDP). Therefore, protecting and enhancing the agricultural sector helps in the development of India’s economy. In this work, a real-time decision support system integrated with a camera sensor module was designed and developed for the identification of plant disease. This research proposes an intelligent method for plant disease classification using image processing techniques. The proposed method aims to assist farmers and experts in identifying and diagnosing plant diseases efficiently and accurately. The system first obtains images of the plant leaves from different perspectives and then preprocesses the images to enhance the quality and remove noise. The preprocessed images are then subjected to feature extraction using a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) model. The features extracted from the CNN are then fed into a classifier for the classification of plant diseases. The proposed method is evaluated using a dataset of plant images with three different types of diseases. The results obtained show that the proposed method achieves high accuracy in the classification of plant diseases, making it a useful tool for plant disease diagnosis and control. The proposed method can be integrated into a mobile application or web based platform for use by farmers and botanists.

Abstract:In agriculture, crops are severely affected by illnesses, which reduce their production every year. The detection of plant diseases during their initial stages is critical and thus needs to be addressed. Researchers have been making significant progress in the development of automatic plant disease recognition techniques through the utilization of machine learning (ML), image processing, and deep learning (DL). This study analyses the recent advancements made by researchers in the field of ML techniques for identifying plant diseases. This study also examines various methods used by researchers to produce ML solutions, such as image preprocessing, segmentation, and feature extraction. This study highlights the challenges encountered while creating plant disease identification systems, such as small datasets, image capture conditions, and the generalizability of the models, and discusses possible solutions to cater to these problems. Still, the development of a solution that automatically detects various plant diseases for various plant species remains a big challenge. To address these challenges, there is a need to create a system that is trained on an extensive dataset that contains images of various types of diseases a plant can suffer from, and plant images should be taken at various stages of the disease's development. This study further presents an analysis of various methods used at different stages of plant disease identification.

Abstract:The agriculture sector is the backbone of the global economy, and the health of plants and crops is of paramount importance to ensure food security and sustainable agriculture. Plant diseases pose a significant threat to crop yield and quality, making early detection and effective management crucial. This project presents a comprehensive solution for plant/crop disease identification and management, leveraging the power of deep learning. The primary objective of this project is to develop a robust system capable of accurately classifying plant and crop diseases from images, followed by recommending suitable treatments or interventions. The project begins by creating a diverse and extensive dateset of plant images affected by various diseases, covering a wide range of plant species. The deep learning model employed in this project is a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), which has proven to be highly effective in image classification tasks. The model undergoes rigorous training on the dataset, learning to recognize unique disease patterns and symptoms in plants. In addition to disease classification, the system is designed to recommend appropriate interventions, such as treatment options and preventive measures, based on the identified disease
