Abstract:Reverse osmosis and electrodialysis membrane technologies of water conditioning which have not yet received much attention are the most promising in modification of water conditioning plants operating at thermal power stations. Using electrodialysis membrane devices in the schemes of water conditioning plants for water softening and desalting allows not only the reduction of current operating costs for water treatment but also to attain a higher level of automation of the manufacturing processes of water conditioning as well as to improve ecological indices of thermal power stations. Investments in ED make it possible not only to reduce the costs of TPS for water conditioning but also to significantly improve the chemical conditions of the operation of equipment and to reduce costs for repair of boilers and heating systems by increasing the period of overhaul campaigns.

Abstract:Nanotechnology-enabled water treatment is a promising solution to the challenges in the current water treatment processes, particularly to the crisis of persistent and trace emerging contaminants. Taking the integrated process coupling membrane filtration with ozonation that has been developed and widely applied in field as examples, we analyze the scientific rationale of catalytic ceramic membranes and nano-effects in membrane pores, which are considered as nano-reactors. The confinement effects are analyzed from four aspects, including the high specific surface area in membrane nano-pores, enrichment of reactants and enhancement of reaction kinetics in nano-pores, organized arrangement of water molecules in nano-reactors and the role of electric double layer during reactions. For each aspect, we build the correlation between the confinement effects and the phenomena in membrane nano-pores. Moreover, we present opportunities for the future research on nanotechnology-enabled water treatment.

Abstract:Currently, one of the most promising and effective ways to ensure the necessary quality indicators of desalinated water is the use of devices based on membrane separation technology. At the same time, of great interest are the schemes of water treatment plant, composed only of membrane modules of various purposes: ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, electrodeionization. The advantages of membrane technology are due to low reagent consumption, easy operation, compact equipment and small amount of highly mineralized wastewater. The increased attractiveness of membrane technologies (especially in recent years) is due to the increase in the prices of reagents, ionites, primary water and also to the tightening of the standards for saline effluent. Thus, the aim of this work is to develop scientific and technical approaches to the creation of water treatment plant on the basis of modern membrane technologies for steam-gas thermal power plant and to develop approaches to design, specialized water treatment plant for humidifying dry air-cooling fan cooling cooling systems.
WASTEWATER REUTILIZATION BY MEMBRANE TECHNOLOGY IN MECHANICAL TREATMENT

Abstract:Wastewater in mechanical industry was treated for utilization by microfiltration(MF) and electrodialysis(ED). The results showed that microfiltration was suitable for pre-treatment, while the electrodialysis was suitable for salts,organics and COD removal. The final conductivity of the product water after ED was as low as 260μS/cm and the ultimate COD value was about 20mg/L.The quality of product water was close to municipal tap water and very suitable for reuse as industrial cycle cooling water.

Abstract:Wastewater in mechanical industry has been treated for reutilization by electrodialysis(ED)and reverse osmosis(RO)in laboratory.The results show that most of the salinity and COD can be removed by ED.The conductivity of the effluent after ED is as low as 260 μS/cm,COD is 46 mg/L.After the concentrated water is treated consequently by RO the conductivity of permeate is 200 μS/cm and COD 27.7 mg/L.After the treatment,both of the effluent and permeate conform to the standard of reutilization,and can be reused as circulating cooling water,without negative influence on the production.

Abstract:An analysis of TPP wastewater, as well as technologies and equipment for their treatment, for choosing a rational mode and determining the maximum permissible concentrations of harmful substances characteristic of the energy industry before discharge into reservoirs was carried out. The compositions of the listed effluents are different and are determined by the type of thermal power plants (TPP) and the main equipment, its capacity, type of fuel, composition of the source water, method of water treatment, etc. For example, water after cooling turbine condensers and air coolers usually carries so-called thermal pollution, since its temperature is 8...10 oС higher than the temperature of water in the water source. In some cases, cooling water can introduce foreign substances into natural reservoirs. In order to reduce the level of soil and groundwater pollution, local wastewater treatment facilities were constructed at thermal power stations. The second method is the collection of waste water in specially created containers with subsequent purification using sedimentation tanks and filters, which have anthracite or activated carbon as a filter material. TPP waste water is diverse and the chemical composition of each of the effluents is different. Wastewater treatment technology is complex and multi-stage and requires a large amount of various equipment. The ITTF of the National Academy of Sciences has developed a multi-purpose rotor-type aeration and oxidation plant (AORT), which works according to the method of discrete-pulse energy input (DPEI). This installation makes it possible to speed up the rate of heat and mass exchange of chemical reactions in water and water systems by 25-30 %. It makes it possible to reduce the duration of cleaning processes, reduce energy consumption by 2-3 times and consumption of reagents by 20-25 %. The AORT installation is used to clean sewage from iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, sulfates, and nitrates.

Abstract:The article deals with the issues of existing processes for improving the physical and chemical conditions of the ion exchange process in water treatment. Patents and publications on the use of the ion exchange method in water treatment have been analysed. The expediency and scientific significance are determined by the possibility of further improving the efficiency of the ion exchange process in water treatment on the basis of the obtained results. Existing methods, such as thermal and cryogenic treatment, membrane plants, distillation and reverse osmosis, have a number of disadvantages, such as high energy consumption of the process and the inability to be used on an industrial scale. A promising method to improve the efficiency of modified ion exchange resins is to use the effect of a magnetic field on the feed water with constant stirring. The article analyses ion exchange resins and their problems, existing research aimed at modernising the ion exchange process, considers ways to optimise the selectivity of ion exchange resins, their modification with dendritic aggregates, and the use of mixed cationic and anionic ion exchange resins. Regeneration of ion-exchange resins using ammonium bicarbonate technology, reagent-free regeneration methods, such as electrodialysis, electrodionization systems, in order to reduce process waste, possible schemes of using ion-exchange plants in combination with other methods of water treatment. The analysis shows the relevance of using the ion exchange process in water treatment and the prospect of further research on ways to intensify the process to reduce energy and economic resources. The obtained results demonstrate the most advanced ways to improve the method of ion exchange for water treatment, such as reagentless regeneration of ionites using electrodialysis, modification of resins by introducing the necessary functional groups.

Abstract:In the face of water scarcity, the world seeks to explore all available options to reduce overexploitation and so limited freshwater resources. One of the most reliable available water resources is wastewater. As the world's population grows, so do industrial, agricultural, and domestic activities, which produce large amounts of such water that can be treated and reused. Sewage treatment processes have been somewhat successful in wastewater treatment, but many are high-tech and cost-effective. Membrane technology has become a favorite choice for the reclamation of water from various wastewater streams for reuse. Organic membranes are made of synthetic organic polymers. Pressure membranes are mainly produced for separation processes (microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis) from synthetic organic polymers. These include polyethylene (PE), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polypropylene and cellulose acetate. In addition, membranes are made of materials such as ceramics, metals, zeolites or silica. They are chemically and thermally stable and are widely used for industrial purposes such as hydrogen separation, ultrafiltration and microfiltration. Pressure-controlled membrane technologies are the most widely used membrane processes in wastewater treatment, from previous contamination followed by additional treatment. These processes are based on microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO). They are necessary but costly The choice of wastewater treatment option is based on comparative economic efficiency. The main ways to determine such efficiency are: pairwise comparison of options and determine the minimum of the reduced costs of the compared options. Pairwise comparison of options is carried out by determining the coefficients of comparative economic efficiency and payback periods of additional capital investments.

Abstract:Several processes for boiler make-up water production was presented according to the quality demand of boiler make-up water, the process characteristics, technique demands, operation performance, investment of electrodeionization technology and its application in water treatment of thermal power plant were elaborated. electrodeionization technology usually uses reverse osmosis as its pre-desalination and softening treatment. Compared with mixed bed, electrodeionization technology produces no acid or alkali waste liquid, the effluent quality is stable, and the occupied area of the equipments is small. A better water quality can be obtained by combined reverse osmosis-electrodeionization process than that by double-pass reverse osmosis process, when the investments are close. Combined reverse osmosis-electrodeionization process is superior to combined reverse osmosis-mixed bed process and double-pass reverse osmosis process.

Abstract:The paper considers the potential practical application of an electrochemical membrane method in the process of copper sulfate and trisodium phosphate removal from industrial water. The research objects were process solutions containing copper sulfate and trisodium phosphate and semipermeable polymeric membranes with various selective permeability characteristics. The study covers the effect that the transmembrane parameters of electromembrane separation have on the main kinetic characteristics of MGA-95P and OPM-K membranes in the process of copper smelting production water treatment. Approximation expressions were obtained to calculate membrane rejection rate depending on the physicochemical basis of the semipermeable membrane polymer, transmembrane pressure as well as process solution concentration and temperature. Empirical coefficients were determined to calculate and predict rejection rate values that can be used in the design of laboratory, pilot and industrial units used in the separation, treatment and concentration of industrial and waste water. The mathematical model of mass transfer was developed for electrochemical membrane separation taking into account assumptions made based on the solutions of the Nernst—Planck and Poisson—Boltzmann equations. This model allows for process physical description and calculations of concentration fields in the intermembrane channel and concentration changes in permeate and retentate lines. The mathematical model was checked for adequacy by comparing experimental data on retention rate with theoretical values where discrepancies between the experimental and theoretical data were within the limits of the experimental error and the error of calculated values.
Membrane-based Electrochemical Precipitation for Water Softening

Abstract:Electrochemical precipitation has been widely employed for recirculating cooling water softening because of its environmental friendliness, convenient operation, and high treatment efficiency. However, this technique uses many expensive electrodes, and thus requires a very large investment. In this study, a novel process called membrane-based electrochemical precipitation (MEP) was proposed and tested for water softening. This new process utilises membrane polarisation, an undesirable phenomenon that occurs in conventional electrodialysis, to precipitate hardness ions on the surface of membranes. Compared with conventional electrodialysis, MEP involves only one kind of exchange membrane. Moreover, unlike traditional electrochemical precipitation, MEP only needs one pair of electrodes, and thus can reduce equipment cost significantly. Different types of membranes were examined, and heterogeneous anion exchange membranes were found to be the best. It was demonstrated that MEP could soften water effectively. The precipitation rate and energy consumption were 64.0-84.6 g/h/m(2) and 8.8-12.0 kW h/kg CaCO3, respectively. The scale deposited on the membranes could be detached easily through polarity reversal of electrodes. Repeated experiments showed that MEP could run stably without any performance deterioration.

Abstract:The industrial water quality of a thermal power plant is of high importance, and a process water treatment station being always required. Whatever the adopted treatment system is, it is accompanied by the production of different amounts of sediment and sludge, which must be disposed and valorized. This paper presents in detail, the physical-chemical treatment system applied for the industrial water production in a Romanian thermal power plant (Veolia Energy Iasi Co.), referring to its installations, performance achieved, and also the quality characteristics of the treated industrial process water and certain types of produced sludges (i.e. primary and desulfurization ones). The industrial water treatment performance is very good (85-100%) in terms of suspended solids, turbidity, organics (expressed by COD), fixed residues, heavy metals content, total hardness and microbiological inhibitors. The water and total iron contents were high in the primary sludge and, for the desulfurization sludge, low water and moderate calcium contents were found to be present. Information on the applied treatment and valorization possibilities of primary sediment and sludge are recommended, all being dependent on the operational and maintenance costs of used conditioning and dehydration installations. The final result can be a newly added-value byproduct which would be used as raw or auxiliary material (uniform compact plates), but also the minimization of produced sludge amounts in association with the environment protection and the control of environmental pollution due to industrial water treatment station functioning

Production of Drinking Water with Membranes with Simultaneous Utilization of Concentrate and Reject Effluent after Sludge Dewatering

Abstract:A new technology is described that enables us to completely exclude liquid discharges during production of drinking water from surface sources. The proposed described technological scheme separates the natural water into a stream of purified drinking water and dewatered sludge. The sludge moisture has a value of 80 percent. The experimental program is described to treat the natural water with nanofiltration membranes and to produce a drinking-quality water with recovery value of 0.99 and higher. Concentrate of membrane plant is mixed with the wet sludge and the reject effluent after sludge dewatering is again treated by reverse osmosis membranes and returned back to the sludge thickening tank. Results of experiments to treat reject water after sludge dewatering are presented. The use of nanofiltration membranes provides reduction in the Total Dissolved Solids content (TDS), aluminum, color and oxidation to meet drinking water standards. Experimental plots are presented that can be used to select membrane characteristics and to predict product water chemical composition at each stage of the membrane treatment scheme. Concentrate of membrane treatment plant is mixed with the wet sludge in the thickening tank. The sludge, after the thickening tank, is dewatered using either filter-press or centrifugal equipment. The reject (or fugate), after sludge dewatering, is treated by membrane facility to separate it into deionized water stream and concentrate stream. The deionized water can be mixed with the feed water or drinking water and the concentrate stream is returned back to the thickening tank. Thus, the salt balance is maintained in the thickening tank, whereby all dissolved salts and impurities that are rejected by membranes are collected in the thickening tank, and then are withdrawn together with the dewatered sludge. Based on the results of experimental data processing, balance diagrams of the sludge dehydration process with waste water purification at the membrane plant and with the addition of the membrane plant concentrate to the sludge thickener are presented, according to which all contaminants removed by the membranes are removed together with the sludge.

Abstract:The work is devoted to the problem of water purification during the flowering of phytoplankton, as well as during salvo pollution by industrial effluents. Anthropogenic load significantly reduc-es the efficiency of purification according to the current technology, therefore, additional post-treatment methods must be used to obtain purified water of the required quality. The purpose of this article is to substantiate the choice of a sorbent within the framework of the considered wa-ter treatment technology, as well as to determine the optimal effective dosage of its dosing. This goal is achieved by implementing the following tasks: analysis of powdered sorption materials used in water treatment technology, selection of an effective dose and entry point of the selected sorption material based on experimental studies, analysis of the results obtained and develop-ment of technical solutions for the organization of a hybrid purification plant. The most im-portant results are: determination of the optimal dose of coal pulp and the frequency of dosing to maintain the required quality of purified water, determination of key water quality indicators affected by treatment with activated carbon. The achievement of these results made it possible to determine the main technological features of the water purification method and determine the possibility of combining it with other purification technologies. The significance of the results obtained lies in the fact that new technical solutions have been proposed to improve the effi-ciency of water treatment facilities during a period of drastic changes in water quality in a water source.

Abstract:Artificial ion-exchange and other charged membranes, such as biomembranes, are self-organizing nanomaterials built from macromolecules. The interactions of fragments of macromolecules results in phase separation and the formation of ion-conducting channels. The properties conditioned by the structure of charged membranes determine their application in separation processes (water treatment, electrolyte concentration, food industry and others), energy (reverse electrodialysis, fuel cells and others), and chlore-alkali production and others. The purpose of this review is to provide guidelines for modeling the transport of ions and water in charged membranes, as well as to describe the latest advances in this field with a focus on power generation systems. We briefly describe the main structural elements of charged membranes which determine their ion and water transport characteristics. The main governing equations and the most commonly used theories and assumptions are presented and analyzed. The known models are classified and then described based on the information about the equations and the assumptions they are based on. Most attention is paid to the models which have the greatest impact and are most frequently used in the literature. Among them, we focus on recent models developed for proton-exchange membranes used in fuel cells and for membranes applied in reverse electrodialysis.

Abstract:Based on a thermodynamic analysis of potentially applicable methods for water detritiation, it is concluded that the most promising methods are water distillation and chemical isotope exchange (ChIE) between hydrogen and water. Data on the mass transfer characteristics of these separation methods for various types of contact devices in countercurrent separation columns are presented. Installations for detritiation of light water are compared using the ITER reactor project as an example, and advantages and disadvantages of the methods are analyzed. Taking into account information about existing or planned water detritiation installations in different countries of the world, the conditions for the preferential application of ChIE technology are considered.

Abstract:Cooling water blowdown (CWBD) generated from different industries and district cooling facilities contains high concentrations of various chemicals (e.g., scale and corrosion inhibitors) and pollutants. These contaminants in CWBD streams deem them unsuitable for discharge into surface water and some wastewater treatment plants. The pollutants present in CWBD, their sources, and the corresponding impacts on the ecosystem are discussed. The international and regional (Gulf states) policies and regulations related to contaminated water discharge standards into water bodies are examined. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the existing and emerging water treatment technologies for the treatment of CWBD. The study presents a comparison between the membrane (membrane distillation (MD), reverse osmosis (RO), nanofiltration (NF), and vibratory shear enhanced membrane process (VSEP)) and nonmembrane-based (electrocoagulation (EC), ballasted sand flocculation (BSF), and electrodialysis (ED)) technologies on the basis of performance, cost, and limitations, along with other factors. Results from the literature revealed that EC and VSEP technologies generate high treatment performance (EC~99.54% reduction in terms of silica ions) compared to other processes (membrane UF with reduction of 65% of colloidal silica). However, the high energy demand of these processes (EC~0.18–3.05 kWh/m3 and VSEP~2.1 kWh/m3) limit their large-scale applications unless connected with renewable sources of energy.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide power systems (СО 2 -PS) are thermal power facilities in which carbon dioxide (СО 2 ) is used as a working fluid. Given a fairly high initial temperature upstream of the turbine, their efficiency may be higher than that of steam turbine analogs. In all developed countries, intense studies aimed at development of СО 2 -PSs for various purposes are carried out, as a rule, with active participation of the state sector, including the development of state programs and addressed budgetary financial support, with the majority of R&D works carried out in the capacity of national laboratories and research institutes, with planning the works and monitoring their progress. Special attention is paid to solving the problem of decreasing the metal intensity and cost of heat-transfer equipment. It is shown—taking as an example a feasibility study of modifying the domestically developed 1200 MW sodium-cooled fast nuclear power facility by replacing the steam power plant by a СО 2 -PS—that such modification for large capacity power plants with moderate initial temperature levels results in degraded economic efficiency as a consequence of much higher metal intensity, larger overall dimensions, and cost of the heat-transfer equipment. Better economic efficiency in comparison with similar steam turbine plants can be achieved by increasing the initial temperature and decreasing the capacity of a single power unit. At the initial design stages, it is advisable to place the focus on developing a small capacity power part equipment of one standard size (with a standardized main compressor) intended for being used in СО 2 -PS at solar, nuclear, and thermal power facilities. The development of an experimental demonstration (ED) small-capacity СО 2 -PS intended for carrying out tests and experimentally perfecting the equipment and technology of its operation is a mandatory stage in the development of СО 2 -PSs for different capacities and purposes. For decreasing the cost of ED СО 2 -PS recuperators, it is necessary to construct a bench for testing the heat-transfer modules (HTMs) of which the СО 2 -PS recuperators will be assembled. A basic thermal cycle circuit of the bench facility that will accurately replicate the operation conditions of HTMs as part of the ED СО 2 -PS recuperators is developed. The tasks that have to be solved based on the experimental study results are described, and examples of the schematic diagrams of microchannel heat exchangers using which the HTMs can be made more compact are given. Detailed design documents for HTM equipment shall be developed in coordination with the development of technological documentation and plans for improving the technological preparation of manufacture at the industrial partner enterprise that will undertake the task of producing the ED СО 2 -PS heat-transfer equipment.
