Abstract:The reliability of high-reliable and long-lifespan products in the presence of competing risks are commonly derived based on a known acceleration model and a latent independent competing risks model. For the cases with unknown acceleration models and dependent competing risks, this paper proposes a copula based partially accelerated competing risks model using a tampered random variable transformation. The reliability function and dependence structure of the partially accelerated competing risks data are derived between the real lifetime and the accelerated lifetime of each failure cause. In consideration of the parametric constraints and complicated joint posterior distribution, Hamiltonian Monte Carlo method within MCMC procedures is utilized to obtain Bayesian estimation of model parameters and reliability characteristics by defining unconstrained parameters using a specific transformation function. A simulation study is conducted to investigate the estimation performance, showing that the transformation forms have little influence on the point estimation of model parameters, and the constrained parametric Bayesian estimation method is efficient to evaluate the reliability for the proposed model. Finally, a real data set from a light-emitting diode partially accelerated life test is presented for further illustration of Bayesian reliability analysis.

Abstract:In medicals sciences and reliability engineering, the failure of individuals or units (I/Us) occurs due to independent causes of failure. In general, the symmetry between dependent and independent causes of failure is essential to the nature of the problem at hand. In this study, we considered the accelerated dependent competing risks model when the lifetime of I/Us was modeled using a generalized half-logistic distribution. The data were obtained with respect to constant stress accelerated life tests (ALTs) with a type-II progressive censoring scheme. The dependence structure was formulated using the copula approach (symmetric Archimedean copula). The model parameters were estimated with the maximum likelihood method; only two dependent causes of failure and bivariate Pareto copula functions were proposed. The approximate confidence intervals were constructed using both the asymptotic normality distribution of MLEs and bootstrap techniques. Additionally, an estimator of the reliability of the system under a normal stress level was constructed. The results from the estimation methods were tested by performing a Monte Carlo simulation study. Finally, an analysis of data sets from two stress levels was performed for illustrative purposes.

Abstract:It is aimed to propose a copula based systematic quantitative method for system reliability analysis of engineering structures considering multiple dependent failure modes. The principles of the moment matching method, the copula theory and the bound theory are combined to achieve the purpose. As the very first step, the moment estimation of the limit state function of each component is calculated by anchored ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) expansion. The third moment saddle point approximation is then applied to derive the distribution of each performance function and evaluate the reliability index with obtained moments. By introducing copula functions into the narrow bounds theory, the traditional reliability method is improved. The best-fitting copula function is determined to ensure the accuracy of the joint probabilistic modeling between the dependent failure modes. A novel feature of the proposed method is the use of the copula concept, instead of traditional numerical integration commonly used in the joint failure probability estimation. Examples are presented to illustrate the accuracy and applicability of the presented method.

Abstract:Fatigue limit load is one of the most important and concerned factors in designing and manufacturing critical mechanical parts such as the crankshafts. Usually, this governing parameter is obtained by experiment, which is expensive, time-consuming and only feasible in analyzing the case of simple structure. Still, there's a big obstacle to clear to get the fatigue limit load of a sophisticated structure effectively and efficiently. Based on the theory of multi-axial fatigue and critical distance, this paper first analyzes the stress state of the crankshaft under a bending moment by a coordinate transform method. Then, suitable fatigue criterions and stress distribution are chosen to determine the fatigue limit value. Also, the experiment is conducted to verify the prediction result. As the simulation results through the critical line method show a better consistency with the experiment data, the effectiveness of the critical line method make it more recommendable to be put into engineering practice than the critical point method in predicting the fatigue limit. The conclusion in this paper may enlighten the understanding of the fracture behavior of a complex structure and provide a valuable reference for fatigue limit prediction in engineering application.

Abstract:Staircase testing is a standard method for evaluating the fatigue strength of components. However, staircase testing assumes a normal distribution, while components can display bimodal behavior due to flaws in material, or issues during the manufacturing process. Three unique step loading data sets on different production crankshafts provide evidence that step loading reliably identifies material or manufacturing issues, which lower a component's fatigue strength. Staircase testing has an 87% or greater chance of overestimating the component's fatigue strength, which in turn overestimates the component's expected reliability. For example, a component with a 99.9% reliability based on staircase testing would only have a 74% reliability based on step loading. If a component contains an undetectable manufacturing defect, staircase testing has a 99% chance of overestimating the component's fatigue strength. Step loading reliably improves the estimation of a component's fatigue strength distribution while providing insights into a component's defect tolerance.

Abstract:This study investigates the dependence between stress and component strength in a stress–strength model with bivariate stresses by incorporating a specialized Archimedean copula, specifically the 3-dimensional Clayton copula. Diverging from prior research, we consider a scenario where two stresses simultaneously influence the component strength, enhancing the realism of our model. Initially, dependent parameter estimates were obtained through moment estimation. Subsequently, maximum likelihood estimation and Bayesian estimation were employed to acquire point and interval estimates for the model parameters. Finally, numerical simulations and real-world data analysis were conducted to validate the accuracy and practicality of our proposed model. This research establishes a foundation for further exploration of general dependence structures and multi-component stress–strength correlation issues.

Abstract:The objective of this article is to conduct a full study on the failure times of items when subjected to a progressive-stress accelerated life test. These failure times follow the Modified Kies exponential distribution. We performed the experiments under a type-II censoring scheme with binomial removal. The stress design has two ways to be applied either the simple ramp-stress test or the multiple ramp-stress level design of acceleration. We made a comparison between these two designs to decide which design is better. When the lifetime of test units follows the Modified Kies distributions, the cumulative exposure model has been used to apply the acceleration on the failure times to produce early failures. The simulation study was done to compare two types of progressive-stress designs. Different estimation techniques such as maximum likelihood estimation and Bayes estimation are employed to estimate the model parameters. The Metropolis Hasting method is used to derive the Bayesian estimates under symmetric and asymmetric loss functions. We also developed interval estimation as well as point estimation, and we estimated the asymptotic confidence intervals, bootstrap, and credible for the distribution parameters. We made a comparison between different estimation methods. We used real data from a practical experiment as a real data set example to assess the performance of the estimations methods. These data are analyzed to demonstrate the adequacy and superiority of the distribution to fit accelerated failure times. Also, we studied the existence and uniqueness of the roots and we used graphs to assure that the estimates used are unique and global maximum. Finally, some noteworthy conclusions are reached.

Abstract:Step‐stress accelerated degradation test (SSADT) has become a prevailing approach to lifetime assessment for highly reliable products. In practice, many products suffer from multiple degradation processes that significantly contribute to failures. In this paper, we investigate the optimal SSADT plans for products subject to two dependent degradation characteristics modeled by a bivariate inverse Gaussian process. The drift parameter of each process is assumed to be influenced by a common stress factor. A bivariate Birnbaum‐Saunders (BVBS)‐type distribution is employed to approximate the lifetime distribution and facilitate the derivation of the objective function. The optimal plans are prescribed under three common optimality criteria in the presence of constraints on test units and inspections. A revisited example of fatigue crack is then presented to demonstrate the proposed methods. Finally, the sensitivity of the SSADT plans is studied, and the results exhibit fair robustness of the optimal plans.

Abstract:<h2 class="section-title u-h3 u-margin-l-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Abstact</h2><p>In this paper, a multiple stresses reliability model with dependent competing failure processes (DCFPs) is proposed, which includes constructing the multiple stresses acceleration model and deriving the degradation-shock dependences competing model. The multiple stresses coupling are considered in multiple stresses acceleration model, and the degradation-shock dependence is considered and modeled by Facilitation model. Then, a statistical inference method of accelerated degradation testing with multiple stresses and dependent competing failure processes is proposed. Finally, a practical example is used to demonstrate accuracy of the proposed model and method. It is shown that the reliability model without considering multiple environment stresses is a special case (40°C, 65%RH and random shocks) of that considering multiple environment stresses. We also explain the phenomenon that the reliability at same time is lower with the larger temperature, larger humidity and more random shock due to that the mean of wear rate is larger with the larger stress, and the reliability is lower with the larger mean of wear rate. Moreover, the maximum MSE of the parameter estimation result obtained by the statistical inference method is 0.34%.</p>

Copula models for one-shot device testing data with correlated failure modes

Abstract:Copula models have become one of the most popular tools, especially in finance and insurance, for modeling multivariate distributions in the past few decades, and they have recently received increasing attention for data analysis in reliability engineering and survival analysis. This paper considers two Archimedean copula models — the Gumbel-Hougaard copula and Frank copula — for analyzing one-shot device data with two correlated failure modes, which are collected from constant-stress accelerated life tests. A one-shot device is a unit that cannot be used again after a test, e.g., munitions, rockets, and automobile airbags. Only either left- or right-censored data are collected instead of the actual lifetimes of the devices under test. With the aid of Kendall's tau correlation coefficient, initial values of the dependence parameter for the copula models are presented to determine maximum likelihood estimates of model parameters through a numerical approach. Furthermore, the proposed model can be used to examine whether the correlation between times to failure modes changes over stress levels. Real data from a survival experiment are also re-analyzed to illustrate the proposed methods.

Abstract:With the development of engineering and science technology, many products are able to operate for a long period of time before failure. Accelerated life testing (ALT) has been proposed to evaluate reliability and life of these products, but ALT may involve the collection of only a few failures (time-to-failure data). To overcome this problem, accelerated degradation testing (ADT) is presented. Competing failure mechanisms happen in many electronic devices. However, as for designing an efficient ADT experiment, competing failure mechanisms were seldom discussed. In this study, we first use drift Brownian motion to model a typical step-stress ADT (SSADT) problem. Then, according to competing failure rule, we established reliability model of the product. Next, under the constraint that the total experimental cost does not exceed a predetermined budget, our objective is to minimize the asymptotic variance of the estimated hundred percentile of the competing reliability model of product. This optimal testing plan gives the optimal number of test units and inspection times at each stress level. Finally, we analyze the different optimal plans with different budgets, different levels of stress and different stress steps. Based on these analyses, we propose the guideline of stress loading principles of SSADT.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the situation under a life test, in which the failure time of the test units are not related deterministically to an observable stochastic time varying covariate. In such a case, the joint distribution of failure time and a marker value would be useful for modeling the step stress life test. The problem of accelerating such an experiment is considered as the main aim of this paper. We present a step stress accelerated model based on a bivariate Wiener process with one component as the latent (unobservable) degradation process, which determines the failure times and the other as a marker process, the degradation values of which are recorded at times of failure. Parametric inference based on the proposed model is discussed and the optimization procedure for obtaining the optimal time for changing the stress level is presented. The optimization criterion is to minimize the approximate variance of the maximum likelihood estimator of a percentile of the products' lifetime distribution.

Utilization of modal stress approach in random-vibration fatigue evaluation

Abstract:Random-vibration fatigue evaluation can be of considerable importance in the design phase of aerospace structures due to the severe dynamic loads in service. This paper presents the utilization of modal stress approach to the issue of structural random-vibration fatigue evaluation. Prognosis of random fatigue hotspots by using stress mode shapes is theoretically demonstrated. A two-step procedure is proposed for computational efficiency. Firstly, modal stress analysis is conducted to locate the fatigue hotspots in a dynamic structure. Secondly, the frequency domain-based approach for random fatigue evaluation is performed at these hotspots, as opposed to the computation of the entire structure as before. The capability of stress mode shapes to locate fatigue hotspots is verified by numerical investigations. The finite element model of a single-lap plate structure containing various opening holes was constructed for case study. Six elements were identified as hotspots by using modal stress distributions. Then, random responses and fatigue evaluation of the entire structure were carried out for verification. Good agreement was observed between the fatigue damage contour and the modal stress distributions, which can indicate that the critical positions predicted by stress mode shapes have good accuracy. The calculation time and storage space can be significantly reduced by means of the proposed evaluation procedure. Therefore, the accuracy and efficiency of utilization of modal stress approach in random fatigue evaluation can be ensured.

This paper presents a new optimization criterion considering stress weight based on Ds-optimality to solve the low estimation accuracy problem of some stress model parameters when using the existing optimization design criteria to optimize the multistress accelerated degradation test scheme. First, the accelerated degradation model and constraints are determined by analyzing the test characteristics of step-stress accelerated degradation test (SSADT) with multistress. Then, the weight of each stress is identified by fault tree analysis and potential improvement value methods. Combined with the tabu search–particle swarm optimization (TS-PSO) algorithm, the SSADT with multiple stresses of the optimization design process is given. Finally, taking the SSADT with multistress optimization design of motorized spindle as an example, the practicability of the method is verified, and the optimization results are compared with those under D-optimality and Ds-optimality to validate the effectiveness of the method.

In order to accurately and quickly predict the failure probability of gears with multiple failure modes, a novel reliability analysis methodology based on the mixed Copula (MCopula) function model is proposed to deal with the complex correlation among different failure functions. Firstly, we construct a novel MCopula model based on three famous Copula functions: Gumbel Copula, Clayton Copula, and Frank Copula functions. Secondly, we use and improve the particle swarm optimization (PSO) method to optimally calculate the weight coefficients in the proposed MCopula model. Thirdly, the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) method is adopted to estimate related parameters in the proposed MCopula model. Finally, we verify the proposed reliability analysis methodology with a standard life-prediction case of a strut system and a practical life-problem case of a gear pair system. Comparison results of both cases show that, by using the proposed methodology, the failure probability of a gear pair system with multiple failure correlations can be quickly calculated through a small number of samples and can be estimated as accurately as that by the Monte Carlo scheme. Consequently, our proposed novel methodology successfully analyzes the reliability problems for a gear pair system with multiple failure modes. The proposed methodology can be further applied to solve the reliability problem for other machine parts.

Abstract:To effectively minimize structural risk and forestall the system failure, a structural performance evaluation approach based on the copula model is proposed. This approach could provide resilient predictions and diagnose safety performance under complex structural systems with multiple interdependent uncertainties. Specifically, the proposed copula model establishes the joint distribution of multiple parameters through their actual marginal distributions and coefficient. The reliability analysis is a typical method for calculating structural performance based on various identified failure modes. However, the traditional reliability analysis possesses three significant deficiencies, namely, (1) reliability analysis usually adopts the Gaussian-dependent (Nataf model) or independent assumption that ignores the dependent diversity relationships among different failure modes; (2) previous research lacked an integrated and universal framework for evaluating the potential uncertainties of different dependent structures for different copulas; (3) the algorithms in most of the previous copula models failed to provide an efficient estimation of copula parameters with high accuracy and less bias. For addressing those limitations, we establish a novel probabilistic reliability analysis framework based on copula theory and then verify the proposed approach by a subway tunnel project in Wuhan, China. The results indicate that the proposed approach could represent the complex interdependent relationships between monitored parameters through the best-fit copula model. The results of the proposed reliability analysis could guide the tunnel operators to design an efficient maintenance schema.

Abstract:The copula dependence structure underlying the correlated shear strength parameters of soils can significantly affect the results of slope reliability analysis and risk assessment of slope failure. Currently, how do copula dependence structures affect the failure modes of slopes in spatially variable soils still remains an open question. This study systematically investigates the effect of copula dependence structures on the failure modes of a cohesive-frictional slope in spatially variable soils via an adapted random finite difference method (RFDM) that incorporates the copula-based random fields. The proposed RFDM proceeds with the simulation of cross-correlated random fields considering the copula dependence between the shear strength parameters of the slope. The strength reduction analyses are then performed within the framework of Monte Carlo simulation to obtain the stability analysis results, including the critical slip surface (CSS) and associated factor of safety (FS) and sliding volume. Finally, various statistical analyses on the number and distribution of CSS, FS and sliding volume as well as the failure modes versus different statistics of soil properties are analyzed considering different dependence structures. The results show that the overall distribution range of CSS obtained by the commonly used Gaussian copula is more concentrated, whereas the result by the No. 16 copula is the widest. The differences in the overall distribution range of CSS among different copulas decrease with the increase of the scale of fluctuation, coefficient of variation, and cross-correlation coefficient of the strength parameters. The proportions of different failure modes are comparable for the Gaussian, Plackett and Fran copulas, whereas the No.16 copula has the smallest proportion for the shallow failure and largest proportions for the deep and multi-slip failures. The influence of copula dependence structure on the slope failure mode is more significant than the statistical parameters of soil properties. The results provide useful references for copula selection when the underlying dependence structure is difficult to be determined.

Abstract:The paper analyzes the correlation features between stress strength, multiple failure mechanisms, and multiple components. It investigates the effects of different correlation features on reliability and proposes a method for structural reliability analysis that considers the joint effects of multiple correlation features. To portray the stress–strength correlation structure, the Copula function is utilized and the influence of the correlation degree parameter on reliability is clarified. The text describes the introduction of time-varying characteristics of structural strength and correlation parameters. A time-varying Copula is then constructed to calculate the structural reliability under the stress–strength correlation characteristics. Additionally, a time-varying hybrid Copula is constructed to characterize the intricate and correlation features of multiple failure mechanisms and components. The article proposes the variational adaptive sparrow search algorithm (VASSA) to obtain optimal parameters for the time-varying hybrid Copula. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method are verified through actual cases. The results indicate that multiple correlation features significantly influence structural reliability. Incorporating multiple correlation features into the solution of structural reliability yields safer results that align with engineering practice.

Abstract:Purpose The paper aims to present acceptance sampling plans based on failure‐censored step‐stress accelerated life tests for items having Weibull lives. Design/methodology/approach The model parameters are estimated by the method of maximum likelihood. Based on asymptotic distribution theory, the sample size and the acceptability constant are determined satisfying the producer's and consumer's risks. The step‐stress accelerated life test is optimized to have a minimum sample size by minimizing the asymptotic variance of test statistic. Two modes of step‐stress accelerated life test are considered, and a comparison between them is made. The proposed sampling plans are compared with the sampling plans based on constant stress accelerated life tests. Findings Asymptotic variance is a dominating factor in determining the sample size required for a sampling plan to determine the acceptability of a lot. The sample size is minimized by optimally designing a step‐stress accelerated life test so that the asymptotic variance is minimized.
