Abstract:The circular economy and digital transformation are two of the major trends over the last decade. Integrative methodological advances such as life cycle assessments, material flow analysis, and input-output tables are some of the current trends in circular economy case studies and scenarios. However, more efficient processes are required, and methods need to be adapted to the unique attributes of circular economy systems. This paper presents a descriptive analysis of current technological trends and topics in the circular economy. A scoping review and an automated content analysis were conducted in over 6000 abstracts available in Springer journals. Strategies such as applying data-driven design in the field of circular economy and using innovative information and communication technologies (ICTs) offer new possibilities for optimizing existing integration methods. New circular economy approaches, and systems could emerge based on taking advantage of technologies such as: artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Advanced Data Analytics, etc. Also, emerging topics in circular economy technologies focus on energy, policy, models, and global systems. The paper concludes with an outline of emerging technologies and identifies several future research directions.

Abstract:The degradation of the environment is associated with economic activity, particularly with the linear way in which the economy does not make efficient use of resources. However, the circular economy is opposed to this linear paradigm, since it makes the most of the resources in trying to achieve zero waste. In this context, this study investigates the relationship between industry 4.0 technologies, COVID-19 outbreak, environmental regulation policies and circular economy practices. A questionnaire is designed to collect information from 214 big and private manufacturing firms in Ecuador, and subsequently, through CB-SEM, the information is processed, and the study paths are validated. The results suggest that industry 4.0 technologies and environmental regulation policies are driving circular economy practices during the pandemic. The study finds no evidence favoring COVID-19 being a determining factor in the adoption of the circular economy. The results provide a policy framework for the adoption of a circular economy.

Abstract:Conversations on digital technologies and their use in a circular economy (CE) have proliferated in recent years. The ability to fully use circular resources has become possible with the development of advanced and digital manufacturing technologies. However, there is currently only a limited amount of research that looks at the impact of digital technology on the establishment of a circular economy in a supply-chain context. This study seeks to examine the effect of technological innovation on CE practises, intending to assess their relationship to environmental and economic performance. The authors developed a conceptual framework based on the comprehensive literature review and employed a quantitative method to evaluate the theoretical framework. This research uses survey data of 290 respondents from the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) located in China and Pakistan to explore a model that explains the link between technological innovation, CE practices and performance. The SMART PLS 3.3.3 version was utilized for data analysis. The test findings reveal that technological innovation is positively associated with CE practices and that leads to economic and environmental performance. The findings may assist policymakers and business professionals in taking the appropriate steps to successfully implement and operate circular economy practices. With this connection, this research emphasized that SMEs should integrate their CE practices with digital technology solutions to attain long-term financial and environmental goals.

Abstract:This systematic review critically examines the intersection of digital transformation and circular economy (CE) principles within the built environment. While digitalisation has been shown to enhance efficiency, safety, and sustainability in construction, its role in fostering circularity is less established. This study analyzes literature from 2010 to 2022, focusing on how digital technologies such as open-BIM, digital twins, material passports, blockchain, RFID, and gamification can integrate into and enhance the circular building lifecycle. The findings reveal that while digital tools are pivotal in design and construction phases, their application to existing structures is less straightforward, with challenges including the absence of digital twins for demolished structures, the high costs of retrofit digitalisation, and the predominant focus on environmental benefits over practical implementation. The review also highlights the need for a unified digital transformation strategy and greater cross-industry collaboration. Future research directions are proposed, including the development of localized material banks, the application of RFID in circularity, the scope of Design for Disassembly (DfD) tools, digital inventory of existing buildings, the circularity of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) databases, and policy implications for promoting circular construction practices.

Abstract:The circular economy (CE) has become one of the prominent topics in both natural science and management literature over the last few decades. CE is a dual-loop regenerative system that focuses on the effective and efficient utilization of resources in the ecosystem, which is beneficial to environmental and economic performance optimization. Dual CE initiatives allow firms to increased resource eco-efficiency, as well as resource effectiveness. CE has profound consequences for economic and operational advantage. This reinforces the need for reflection on the definition that may provide guidelines to assess and advance the depth and diversity of the field. We aim to provide a definitional analysis of the CE and suggest future research streams to advance the existing literature. For this purpose, we employed a systematic literature review to collect related publications in the CE. As a result of this, a total of 91 papers were selected, studied, and analyzed. We proposed a sound definition of a circular economy that includes the main identified elements, organizational planning processes, customers and society, utilization of the ecosystem, and economic resource flows. Moreover, future direction agenda, in CE research, is suggested considering three research streams: (1) circular design as value creation and capture, (2) antecedents of key activities, and (3) consequences of key processes. There is limited empirical research conducted on CE, and much of the existing research focuses on theoretical, conceptual, and normative. A few empirical research studies are mainly cross-sectional in their focus and are confined to developing and emerging economies. We hope this study’s findings will extend the field of CE, in which some of the most influential information regarding CE literature is provided. This study suggests that the development of CE initiatives plays an important role in the growing digital transformation in the value chain. There have been limited research studies in the interface of circular economy and Industry 4.0. Future research studies may investigate the extent to which digital transformation can increase the implementation of CE, and their influence on digital performance management.

Abstract:The management of waste through dual way of recycling (i-e offline and online) is assumed to have a key role in attaining ecological sustainability and enabling circular practices. The research on online recycling is gaining evolution in recent age. Prior literature on the current research theme has failed to provide a comprehensive outlook and future trend. Therefore, the current research intends to elaborate the current research scenario linked with online recycling by critically scrutinizing the prior research over the last 41 years. A comprehensive analysis was conducted using the Scopus database, retrieving a total of 866 articles. These articles were selected to provide a conceptual overview and understanding of the fundamental research conducted in the field. By employing bibliometric analysis this research provides comprehensive detail about evolution, mapping of publications and prominent trends from the year 1981 to 2022 to understand the practices and future trends of online recycling research. The outcomes elucidated that there is exponential increase in research publications relating to online recycling over the last five years. The most influential producer of online recycling research are China, United Kingdom and United States. Chinese Universities has the highest number of publications among all the countries across globe. Moreover, the current research trend is focused on technology based circular economy, industrial ecology, bio-based waste management, dual channel recycling, municipal waste, waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), environmental impact and lifecycle assessment. Hence, the prominent research perspective and highlighted features could offer recommendation for upcoming studies to contribute in literature and help practitioners, policymakers and professionals move towards circular practices.

Abstract:The European Union robustly advocates the circular economy model as a foundation for sustainable business growth. However, the adoption rate by businesses remains tepid. Simultaneously, the Fourth Industrial Revolution underscores digitalization's potential for transformation. Many studies point to the role of digital tools in accelerating the circular economy. However, the nexus between digital technology and circular economy principles is a budding and rapidly evolving academic area. While ample research addresses digitalization and the circular economy independently, holistic studies merging the two are limited. This article aims to dissect the current trajectory and future directions of research that integrates both domains, offering deep insights for subsequent scholarly explorations. We employed a bibliometric approach, extracting literature chiefly from the Web of Science database and applying VOSviewer software for keyword association visualizations. Our analysis encompasses varied aspects, from publication trends to interdisciplinary intersections and practical implementations.

Abstract:The article examines the specifics of the changes occurring in the modern world in the context of digitalization and leading to the achievement sustainable development goals. A key approach in supporting the transition to sustainable growth is the creation the circular economy. The results of the research show that the sector of companies producing electrical and electronic equipment is a key area in the efforts to move to a closed-loop economy: trends and prospects for market development among global and domestic manufacturers for electrical engineering products. In addition, the authors highlight the challenges and constraints that companies face in implementing the principles of the circular economy. Understanding the existence of these constraints is important to support the transformation towards a circular economy in the context of implementing its principles. The solution to the problems is a series of actions that are aimed to improve the functioning of electronic companies and take into account the factors affecting the sustainable function on companies in shaping circular economy and digitalization.

Abstract:The current study contributes to the existing literature by constructing a digitalization index to investigate the significance of digitalization in controlling the environmental footprint. Moreover, the dataset is divided into pre-Vision 2030 and post-Vision 2030 implementation to scrutinize the progress of Saudi Vision 2030 to counter the environmental challenges. Vision 2030 is a strategic framework to reduce Saudi Arabia's dependence on oil, diversify its economy, and develop public service sectors such as health, education, infrastructure, recreation, and tourism. The findings have documented the negative coefficients for post-Vision 2030 and post-COVID-19 estimations, reflecting that a significant digitalization increase is useful for controlling the environmental externalities in Saudi Arabia. In the case of post-Vision 2030, the role of environmental technology turns out to be significant and negative, but with a lower magnitude. The study results are useful for drawing significant environmental policies through enhancing the digitalization parameters and advancement of technology.

Abstract:A circular economy is a regenerative approach that emphasizes resource efficiency, waste reduction, and the reuse of materials for a sustainable world. By adopting circular practices, we can reduce the negative impact of traditional linear economic models on the environment. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the world is generating only 26% of total energy production from circular practices, which positively impacts environmental health. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the empirical estimation of circular practices regarding energy on the environment. The current study focuses on the association between the circular economic index, economic growth, trade, digitization, energy use, and the financial development index on the environment in 29 high-income countries from 1990 to 2019. The study employs the second-generation econometric technique Driscoll-Kraay to empirically estimate the association among the variables of interest after confirming cross-sectional dependency within the data set. The study findings reveal that circular practices improve high-income countries’ environmental conditions. Furthermore, the study confirms the association between economic growth, financial development index, energy use, trade, and digitization on the environment, and it leads to a more sustainable situation. Policies are drawn based on findings for policymakers toward a sustainable world.

Abstract:The effective treatment of waste to be used as a resource in future has a major role in achieving environmental sustainability and moving towards circular economy. The current research is aimed to provide in-depth detail regarding prominent trends and research themes, evolution, future research orientation, main characteristics, and mapping of research publications on waste management, technological innovation in circular economy domain from the year 2000 to 2021. Different analyses including text mining and bibliometric and content analyses were applied to answer the research question and provide the details on aforementioned variables. From the bibliometric analyses, a total of 1118 articles were drawn out from the Scopus database to conceptualize the core body of research. As a result, the following themes were identified: electronic waste, circular economy transition, plastic waste, bio-based waste management, lifecycle assessment, and ecological impacts, and construction and demolition waste management. The highlighted features, future research orientation, and prominent research perspective can provide guideline for future research to enrich the literature through conducting studies on provided research directions and help lead waste management and technological innovation policymakers, professionals, and practitioners in moving towards circular transition.

Abstract:There have long been calls from industry for guidance in implementing strategies for sustainable development. The Circular Economy represents the most recent attempt to conceptualize the integration of economic activity and environmental wellbeing in a sustainable way. This set of ideas has been adopted by China as the basis of their economic development (included in both the 11th and the 12th ‘Five Year Plan’), escalating the concept in minds of western policymakers and NGOs. This paper traces the conceptualisations and origins of the Circular Economy, tracing its meanings, and exploring its antecedents in economics and ecology, and discusses how the Circular Economy has been operationalized in business and policy. The paper finds that while the Circular Economy places emphasis on the redesign of processes and cycling of materials, which may contribute to more sustainable business models, it also encapsulates tensions and limitations. These include an absence of the social dimension inherent in sustainable development that limits its ethical dimensions, and some unintended consequences. This leads us to propose a revised definition of the Circular Economy as “an economic model wherein planning, resourcing, procurement, production and reprocessing are designed and managed, as both process and output, to maximize ecosystem functioning and human well-being”.

Abstract:Digital technologies are widely recognised as crucial for promoting the circular economy in industry. However, there still needs for clearer guidance for industrial practitioners on properly using digital technologies to support the implementation of the circular economy. Further efforts are needed to characterise such a relationship better. This work conducts a systematic literature review aimed at understanding the nature and scope of the relationship by examining current knowledge at the intersection of the two domains, i.e. digital technologies and the circular economy. Specifically, the analysis focuses on identifying moderators and mediators of this relationship. About the former, the study discusses the relevance of management commitment, competencies, stakeholders and contextual factors; concerning the latter, the study discusses the relevance of supply chain integration and collaboration and examines in more detail the role of digital‐enabled dynamic capabilities, given their promising relevance in the current debate. Based on the review, a research agenda is proposed with suggestions for future research directions on the relationship between digital technologies and the circular economy.

Abstract:The transition towards a circular economy is a critical step in achieving sustainable development and mitigating environmental degradation. This study explores the challenges and opportunities associated with recycling and re-manufacturing of materials and components within the context of a circular economy. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of the current state of recycling and re-manufacturing technologies, identifying key barriers such as material degradation, contamination, and technological limitations. We also examined the potential for innovative solutions, including advanced material characterization techniques, additive manufacturing, and digital twin technologies, to address these challenges. Our findings reveal that the integration of these technologies can significantly enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of recycling and re-manufacturing processes, enabling the recovery of high-quality materials and components. Furthermore, we highlight the importance of establishing a robust regulatory framework and incentivizing industry participation to accelerate the transition towards a circular economy. This study provides valuable insights for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and researchers working towards the development and implementation of sustainable materials management strategies. By addressing the challenges and harnessing the opportunities identified in this study, we can pave the way for a more sustainable and resource-efficient future.

Abstract:The population growth is drastically surging in demand for food and water and uplifting consumption and waste resulting in overburden of society and the environment. Urgent actions are required to address these emerging global issues. Therefore, adopting a circular economy (CE) is essential to sustain the consumption rate and accommodate the ever-increasing demand. Moreover, the CE practices accelerate the progress on sustainable development. From this perspective, digital technologies are playing driving roles in the successful implementations of CE practices and achievements of the United Nations' (UN) sustainable development goals (SDGs). Among various emerging digital technologies, artificial intelligence (AI) and digital twin ((DT) are the promising ones. This paper aims to understand and explore how both technologies facilitate the CE transitions and attain SDGs in the agriculture domain. To this end, we provide insights into the concepts of CE, AI, and DT with preliminary and current research status. This research evaluates the contributions of global organizations for CE transitions. We elaborate on the significant contributions of AI and DT in the transition towards CE and identify some challenges that hinder the adoption of these technologies. Besides expanding knowledge, concise multiple case studies are also presented as evidence to depict how companies in China are deploying these technologies to digitize various operations and create solutions for waste management, sustainable resource consumption, renewal energy, water conservation, etc. Findings reveal that these companies successfully attain many SDGs of 1, 2, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 17. This paper enormously contributes to the emerging research domain of integrating CE, AI, DT, and agriculture.
