Abstract:Molecule-based ferroic phase-transition materials attracted increasing attentions in the past decades due to their promising potentials as sensors, switches, and memories. One of long-term challenges in the development of molecule-based ferroic materials is how to promote the ferroic phase-transition temperature (Tc). Herein, we present two new hexagonal molecular perovskites, (nortropinonium)[CdCl3] (1) and (nortropinium)[CdCl3] (2), to demonstrate a simple design principle for getting ultrahigh-Tc ferroelastic phase transitions. They consist of the same host inorganic chains but subtly-changed guest organic cations featuring with a carbonyl and a hydroxyl groups in 1 and 2, respectively. With stronger carbonyl-involving hydrogen bonds between adjacent guests but a relatively lower decomposition temperature (Td = 480 K), 1 does not exhibit crystalline phase transition before its decomposition. In contrast, with a higher thermal stability (Td = 570 K) and the subtly reduced attractive interactions between adjacent organic cations by the hydroxyl groups, 2 exhibits three-step structural phase transitions including two ferroelastic ones at ultrahigh Tc's of 463 K and 495 K, respectively. This finding provides important clues to judiciously tuning intermolecular interactions in hybrid crystals for developing high-Tc ferroic materials.
