Abstract:Based on the study of separate areas of Lake Baikal (depth from 14 to 250 m), influence of the grain size composition of bottom sediments on the distribution of methane and sulfide sulfur is examined. Concentrations of the components varied, respectively, from <0.01 to 1.81 μg/g d.s. (average 0.21 μg/g d.s.) and from 0.002 to 0.384 mg/g d.s. (average 0.027 mg/g d.s.). Comparison of the distribution of methane and sulfide sulfur concentrations testifies to active sulfate reduction at the same stations, where methane concentrations are highest, precisely in the northern area of the lake marked by the inflow of the Verkhnyaya Angara and Kichera rivers, as well as at some stations of the profile deployed along the estuarine zone of the Selenga River and stations located in the sublacustrine wastewater discharge zone of the town of Baikal'sk and the Baikal'sk Pulp and Paper Mill (BPPM), which was closed in 2013. Depending on the study area and sampling point depth, the share of the sand fraction (0.05–2.0 mm) in bottom sediments varies from 23 to 99% (average 57%); the silt fraction (0.05–0.005 mm), from 1 to 73% (average 39%), and the pelite fraction (<0.005 mm), from 0.0 to 8.7% (average 4%). Increase of the concentration of reduced gases in sediments correlates tightly with increase of the share of the fine-grained (silt and pelite) fractions. It is concluded that high or low concentrations of methane and sulfide sulfur at the studied upper intervals of sediments in Lake Baikal are caused not only by differences in the thickness of sediments subjected to the anthropogenic impact, but also by variations in depositional conditions that govern the grain size composition and, consequently, the content of organic matter and intensity of methane genesis and sulfate reduction

Abstract:The results of long-term studies of the conjugate distribution of methane (CH 4 ) and sulfide sulfur (S sulfide ) concentrations in the bottom sediments of watercourses of the steppe zone of the European part of Russia are analyzed. In addition to CH 4 and S sulfide , Eh and pH values, humidity and density were determined in different sediment horizons; CH 4 , dry residue, and pH values were determined in water. Concentrations of CH 4 in the watercourses vary from <0.1 to 2007.0 μL/L (median 24.3 μL/L), with the largest number of values (72%) in the range 10.1–100.0 μL/L. The concentrations of CH 4 and S sulfide in the bottom sediments of watercourses are quite high and vary, respectively, from <0.01 to 51.0 μg/g of wet sediment (median 1.35 μg/g) and from <0.001 to 4.50 mg/g of wet sediment (median 0.813 mg/g). Usually, the CH 4 and S sulfide concentrations increase from the surface layer to the subsurface horizons, and then decrease. The difference between the distributions of S sulfide and CH 4 is the more frequent occurrence of maximum concentrations of S sulfide in less deep sediment horizons. Seasonal changes were recorded in the vertical distribution of CH 4 and S sulfide not only in terms of their concentrations, but also in the position of maximum and minimum values. There is a weak positive correlation between the concentrations of CH 4 and S sulfide , which indicates the synchronous formation of these gases in separate layers of sediments of the studied watercourses. The positive correlation established between the CH 4 concentrations in water and 0–2 cm layer of bottom sediments indicates that the sediments are an important source of CH 4 in water and its emission into the atmosphere.

Concentration and Emission of Methane and Hydrogen Sulfide in Lake Baskunchak, Ulan-Blag Beam Creek and Degassing Groundwater Sources in Spring

Abstract:For the first time, the distribution of methane in the brine and bottom sediments of Lake Baskunchak, as well as its tributary, the Ulan-Blag stream, in the beam of which the discharge of ascending degassing groundwater sources takes place, was studied. In addition to CH4, concentrations of total hydrogen sulfide (ΣH2S), Eh and pH values, humidity and density were determined in various horizons (up to 35 cm) of stream sediments. Concentrations of CH4, major ions and pH values were determined in the brine of the lake and stream; experimental measurements of CH4 emission by the chamber method were carried out on one of the debit fields where degassing sources are discharged. Brine mineralization in Lake Baskunchak is 312 g/dm3, which is 2.1 times more than in the Ulan-Blag stream; the water class in the stream and lake is chloride, the sodium group, type II and III, respectively. The fluxes of CH4 into the atmosphere from the surface of the studied degassing source vary in the range of 1.97–2.07 mg/(m2 h). In the brine of degassing sources, a high concentration of CH4 (up to 215 μl/dm3) is recorded, which is 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than in the brine of the lake. Low concentrations of CH4 in the brine of the lake are due to its insignificant flow from bottom sediments into the water due to the presence of a salt crust that prevents gas emission, as well as due to its small concentrations in the upper layers of sediments (0.01 μg/g). Low concentrations of CH4, despite the reducing conditions, are also characteristic of the sediments of the mouth of the Ulan-Blag creek (0.04–0.32 μg/g), which, at high concentrations of ΣH2S in them (0.06–1.32 mg/g), is probably caused by the suppression of methanogenesis in the sediments by sulfate reduction. In general, the distribution of CH4 and ΣH2S along the vertical of deposits is quite synchronous (r = 0.64) and correlates with the distribution of Eh values.

Abstract:Freshwater environments contribute more than 20% of total CH4 flux to the atmosphere, and the lakes are one of the major natural sources of atmospheric CH4, mainly in boreal lakes. So, we present and analyze the temporal and spatial variations of CH4 VMRs over Lake Baikal, the only freshwater body, the unique large and high latitude lake, based on the retrieved monthly CH(4)data from SCIAMACHY spectra. The result showed that monthly CH4 concentrations in atmosphere extended between 1744.780ppb and 1818.495ppb. The value in March was a relative higher value, and then increased from April to August. After this growing, the CH4 concentration decreased to September. But, there was an increased trend in October. Overall, the temporal pattern liked the ocean pattern during the growing season, and was in line with permafrost in other time. Moreover, the spatial distribution of CH4 VMRs showed that the values were higher in North Lake Baikal, followed by South, Center.The crucial controlling factor for the seasonal variation of CH4 concentration and spatial difference was both temperature, the amount of organic matter in the sediment and stability of hydrate. This exerted a direct influence on diatom and CH4 source plus (hydrate). Furthermore, the monthly CH(4)concentrations by air transport were few for the size of basin over Lake Baikal and mountain barriers. So the source over Lake Baikal was itself. Based the average annual mean (8 months) atmospheric CH4 concentration and the area of the Lake Baikal (31494Km(2)), the annual CH4 flux (at all atmospheric altitude levels) was roughly estimated to be 40.03Mg yr (-1) (mean) during the period (March-October, 2003).

Abstract:The paper presents geochemical study of bottom sediments from the MSU structure located on the large Gydratny Fault in the Central Basin of Lake Baikal at a depth of 1380 m. The first detailed data on the spatial variations in the qualitative and quantitative composition of the pore waters are presented. Pioneering data were obtained on Li, B, and Sr contents in the pore water of the sediments. It has been established that fluids are actively discharged within the MSU structure, and the main pathways of their near-surface migration are confined to the tops of hills of this structure on the downthrown fault block. The fluids are highly mineralized (up to 2900 mg/L), showing the highest mineralization ever found in Lake Baikal sediments. The waters are significantly enriched in Mg, Li, B, and Sr but depleted in K. The waters are thought to be generated by the processes of authigenic formation and illitization of smectite at depths of 1 to 2.5 km in the sedimentary sequence. The maximum values of concentration gradients are recorded in the pore waters of the sediments of the western hill, which may indicate a gradual westward shift of the center of the fluid seepage activity along the fault.

The Ability of Microbial Community of Lake Baikal Bottom Sediments Associated with Gas Discharge to Carry Out the Transformation of Organic Matter under Thermobaric Conditions

Abstract:The ability to compare the composition and metabolic potential of microbial communities inhabiting the subsurface sediment in geographically distinct locations is one of the keys to understanding the evolution and function of the subsurface biosphere. Prospective areas for study of the subsurface biosphere are the sites of hydrocarbon discharges on the bottom of the Lake Baikal rift, where ascending fluxes of gas-saturated fluids and oil from deep layers of bottom sediments seep into near-surface sediment. The samples of surface sediments collected in the area of the Posolskaya Bank methane seep were cultured for 17 months under thermobaric conditions (80°C, 5 MPa) with the addition of complementary organic substrate, and a different composition for the gas phase. After incubation, the presence of intact cells of microorganisms, organic matter transformation and the formation of oil biomarkers was confirmed in the samples, with the addition of Baikal diatom alga Synedra acus detritus, and gas mixture CH4:H2:CO2. Taxonomic assignment of the 16S rRNA sequence data indicates that the predominant sequences in the enrichment were Sphingomonas (55.3%), Solirubrobacter (27.5%) and Arthrobacter (16.6%). At the same time, in heat-killed sediment and in sediment without any additional substrates, which were cultivated in a CH4 atmosphere, no geochemical changes were detected, nor the presence of intact cells and 16S rRNA sequences of Bacteria and Archaea. This data may suggest that the decomposition of organic matter under culturing conditions could be performed by microorganisms from low-temperature sediment layers. One possible explanation of this phenomenon is migration of the representatives of the deep thermophilic community through fault zones in the near surface sediment layers, together with gas-bearing fluids.

Abstract:Sanitary-bacteriological and hydrochemical study of coastal water of Lake Baikal, including bottom and interstitial water, was carried out near Bol'shie Koty Settl. in June and September 2022. The study involved methods of classical sanitary microbiology with the use of methods of vacuum filtration and selective media for germination of sanitary indicative microorganisms. The concentrations of chemical components were determined by methods of high-performance liquid chromatography and spectrophotometry. The quality of water in recreation zones, as well as within the boundaries of populated areas used for bathing in the coastal zone of the settlement was found to meet the criteria of regulatory and technical documentation adopted in Russia in terms of indicators Escherichia coli and enterococci. The concentrations of hydrochemical components, such as phosphate phosphorus (P- ); ammonium (N- ), nitrate (N- ) and nitrite (N- ) nitrogen, also did not exceed the values of MAC established in Russia for water bodies used for fishery. The survival rate of E. coli and enterococci was studied in Baikal water and in the interstitial water, which is of importance for the choice of indicators to assess coastal water quality. In the course of the study, it was determined that E. coli and enterococci remained physiologically active longer in interstitial than in coastal water. It was found that the concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria in the coastal zone of the lake can increase depending on the amount of precipitation due to the washing-off of microorganisms from the shore. The study of the effect of nutrients in atmospheric precipitation on the coastal water showed that rains had no effect on the amount of nutrients in the examined surface and bottom water.

Abstract:The paper presents the results of the study of communities of macroinvertebrates and cottoid fish inhabiting methane seeps of Lake Baikal. For the analysis, we used video surveillance and collection of animals carried out with the help of "Mir" deep-water submersible, as well as NIOZ-type box-corer samplers from the board of a research vessel. Posolskaya Bank and Saint Petersburg methane seeps are located in different basins (southern and middle) and at different depths (300–500 m and ~ 1400 m), characterized by the different underwater landscapes (slope of underwater upland and hills formed by gas hydrates), by the structure of gas hydrates and their depth location in sediments, as well as the composition of microbial mats and communities of microorganisms of bottom sediments. Both seeps are characterized by bubble discharge of methane gas and the formation of highly productive communities of large invertebrates and cottoid fish on seep habitats. Seep animal communities consisted of species-depleted invertebrates and fish of the surrounding deep-water benthal of the Lake. We showed the similarities and differences in the composition of the faunas of two seeps, as well as the quantitative characteristics of taxonomic groups of macroinvertebrates and cottoid fishes. Obligate species have not been revealed on the methane seep Posolskaya Bank. For the methane seep Saint Petersburg, the gastropod species Kobeltocochlea tamarae Sitnikova, Teterina et Maximova, 2021 (Caenogastropoda: Benedictiidae) was designated as an obligate species; among bottom cottoid fishes, Neocottus werestschagini (Taliev, 1953) (Cottoidei: Abyssocottidae) had possible a transitional state to obligate. We presented the data on the assimilation by seep animals of mixed photo- and chemosynthetic food with different proportions of methane-derived carbon. A hypothesis has been substantiated that deep-water seep areas could serve as refugium for the preservation of endemic fauna during the Pliocene-Pleistocene glaciations of Lake Baikal.

Abstract:The Posolskaya Bank methane seep (southern Baikal, depths of ~300–500 m) is characterized by weak metha-ne discharge and the deep occurrence of gas hydrates. The species composition and distribution of nematodes from 44 samples of meiozoobenthos on the seeps (gas unloading point and gas hydrate) and background stations were analyzed. 31 species of nematodes from 12 genera, 8 families and 6 orders were identified; 94% of them were found at background stations and/or in other areas of the lake. The ratio of Baikal endemic and Siberian-Palearctic species was 6 : 1. Endemic species of the genera Paratrilobus and Tripyla dominated occurrence frequency and population density. The data obtained on the heterogeneous distribution of nematodes, the relationship between the density of their population and the presence of filaments of sulfur bacteria, copepod detritus, and ferromanganese crusts in the bottom sediments, as well as the habitation of worms with different types of food. These data are discussed.

Abstract:The diversity and structure of microbial communities were investigated using 16S rRNA gene barcoding in the sediments of the Krasny Yar methane seep, in the zone of near-surface occurrence of gas hydrates and the presence of oxidized and restored channels. The diversity of both bacteria and archaea along the core depth was similar to the diversity found in sediments from other areas: methylotrophic methanogens and microorganisms involved in different stages of the organic matter fermentation were detected in the sediment strata of all depths investigated. Migration flows of oxygen-rich and aerobic bacteria-rich near-bottom water influenced greatly the diversity of microbial communities in oxidized channels. Fluids migrating from the deep zone to the bottom surface provided transport from anoxygenic sediments of anaerobic archaea involved in the AOM process. The data obtained are consistent with geochemical and geothermal indicators defining the zone of active migration of near-bottom waters.

Abstract:For the first time, the distribution of methane in the brine and bottom sediments of the Ulan-Blag stream (tributary of Lake Baskunchak), fed by underground degassing springs, as well as directly in Baskunchak Lake at a distance from underground sources. The composition of the main ions in brine, acid-base and redox conditions in bottom sediments have been established. The brine mineralization in Baskunchak Lake is 312 g/dm 3, which is 2.1 times higher than the mineralization of the Ulan-Blag stream. The chemical composition of the brine of both stations is classified as chloride type, sodium cationic composition. The concentration of methane in the brine of the studied underground degassing sources in the ravine stream of the Ulan-Blag reaches high values (up to 215 μl/dm 3), exceeding by 1–2 orders of magnitude its concentration in the brine of Lake Baskunchak. The low concentrations of methane in the brine of the lake are probably due to its insignificant flow from the bottom sediments into the water due to the presence of a salt crust that prevents gas emission, as well as due to its small concentrations in the upper layers of sediments.
Assessment of the Current Ecological State of Soils on the Western Coast of Lake Baikal (On the Example of Soils of the Coastal Part of the Lake, the Delta and the Basin of the Goloustnaya River)

Abstract:The work was carried out on the territory of the Goloustnensky municipality, located on the western shore of the lake Baikal and part of the Baikal National Park. The article presents the data of the modern assessment of their ecological state. 10 test sites were laid in the Goloustnaya River basin, its delta, as well as in the forest of the coastal part of the lake. Baikal. To assess the current state of soils, concentrations of petroleum products and heavy metals (cadmium, lead, cobalt, nickel, copper, chromium) in them were determined. The results of the study showed that the content of petroleum products in soil samples is minimal and below the permissible level of pollution. The content of cobalt, nickel, copper and chromium has been found to exceed Clark and regional background values. The increased concentrations of metals are most likely due to natural factors – namely, the composition of the underlying rocks, rather than anthropogenic impact.

Abstract:We analyzed the amplicons of the 16S rRNA genes and assembled metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) of the enrichment culture from the Fe-Mn layer to have an insight into the diversity and metabolic potential of microbial communities from sediments of two sites in the northern basin of Lake Baikal. Organotrophic Chloroflexota, Actionobacteriota, and Acidobacteriota, as well as aerobic and anaerobic participants of the methane cycle (Methylococcales and Methylomirabilota, respectively), dominated the communities of the surface layers. With depth, one of the cores showed a decrease in the proportion of the Chloroflexota and Acidobacteriota members and a substantial increase in the sequences of the phylum Firmicutes. The proportion of the Desulfobacteriota and Thermodesulfovibronia (Nitrospirota) increased in another core. The composition of archaeal communities was similar between the investigated sites and differed in depth. Members of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (Nitrososphaeria) predominated in the surface sediments, with an increase in anaerobic methanotrophs (Methanoperedenaceae) and organoheterotrophs (Bathyarchaeia) in deep sediments. Among the 37 MAGs, Gammaproteobacteria, Desulfobacteriota, and Methylomirabilota were the most common in the microbial community. Metagenome sequencing revealed the assembled genomes genes for N, S, and CH4 metabolism for carbon fixation, and genes encoding Fe and Mn pathways, indicating the likely coexistence of the biogeochemical cycle of various elements and creating certain conditions for the development of taxonomically and functionally diverse microbial communities.

Abstract:The results of studying the chemical composition of water in Northern Baikal and in the rivers flowing into it are analyzed. It is shown that the influence of river water on forming the chemical composition of water in this part of the lake is observed at the distance of 1–3 km from the cofferdam separating the Upper Angara delta from Lake Baikal. In spring and early summer, the expansion of river water in the lake is constrained by a thermal bar. In summer, a biological barrier is formed in the mixing zone, where the minimum biogenic element concentrations of and maximum phytoplankton concentrations are registered. The increased concentrations of phosphorus have been revealed in the shallow area in winter, which points to the contamination of bottom sediments and secondary pollution of water. The increased content of phosphorus in the water may be a sign of the eutrophication of Northern Baikal.

Abstract:Bottom sediments at methane discharge sites of the Laptev Sea shelf were investigated. The rates of microbial methanogenesis and methane oxidation were measured, and the communities responsible for these processes were analyzed. Methane content in the sediments varied from 0.9 to 37 μmol CH4 dm−3. Methane carbon isotopic composition (δ13C-CH4) varied from −98.9 to −77.6‰, indicating its biogenic origin. The rates of hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis were low (0.4–5.0 nmol dm−3 day−1). Methane oxidation rates varied from 0.4 to 1.2 μmol dm−3 day−1 at the seep stations. Four lineages of anaerobic methanotrophic archaea (ANME) (1, 2a–2b, 2c, and 3) were found in the deeper sediments at the seep stations along with sulfate-reducing Desulfobacteriota. The ANME-2a-2b clade was predominant among ANME. Aerobic ammonium-oxidizing Crenarchaeota (family Nitrosopumilaceae) predominated in the upper sediments along with heterotrophic Actinobacteriota and Bacteroidota, and mehtanotrophs of the classes Alphaproteobacteria (Methyloceanibacter) and Gammaproteobacteria (families Methylophilaceae and Methylomonadaceae). Members of the genera Sulfurovum and Sulfurimonas occurred in the sediments of the seep stations. Mehtanotrophs of the classes Alphaproteobacteria (Methyloceanibacter) and Gammaproteobacteria (families Methylophilaceae and Methylomonadaceae) occurred in the sediments of all stations. The microbial community composition was similar to that of methane seep sediments from geographically remote areas of the global ocean.

Abstract:Abstract We studied the methane content in Lake Onego bottom sediments and bottom water and revealed a wide variation of its concentrations among different parts of the lake. Methane concentrations were the highest in the pockmarked area of Petrozavodsk Bay, where hydrocarbon gases rise to the lake bed surface from the depth. Methane emissions from Lake Onego sediments were estimated. We show that in addition to the geological and geomorphological characteristics of the basin, the flux rate depends on how the lake sediments are forming under the uneven human pressure and climate oscillations of today.

Abstract:The diurnal dynamics of methane content in the near-bottom phototrophic biomass of the shallow soda lake Bitter 1 (Gorchina 1) with a salinity of 30 g/L during the study period was investigated. The community was dominated by filamentous cyanobacteria, although no layered mat was formed. The maximum value of methane content up to 202.4 nmol CH 4 /cm 3 was revealed in the morning hours, which significantly exceeded the night values (28.9–42.8 nmol CH 4 /cm 3 ). Comparison of data on the content of methane with the relative abundance of cyanobacteria, methanogenic archaea, and methanotrophic bacteria during the twenty-four hours indicated that active processes of the methane cycle in soda lakes occurred not only in the sediments, but also in the near-bottom cyanobacterial communities. Methane content in the biomass of such a community is the result of a balance between the processes of its release by methanogens, consumption by methanotrophic bacteria, and natural degassing. It is assumed that the morning peak of methane content is associated with the release of hydrogen by diazotrophic cyanobacteria, which stimulates the development and activity of hydrogenotrophic methanogens of the genus Methanocalculus .

Abstract:The sources of thermophilic bacteria revealed in cold Lake Baikal sediments are considered. Comparative analysis of the taxonomic position of thermophilic microorganisms from four terrestrial hot springs at Lake Baikal coast and from the bottom sediments associated with hydrocarbon discharge was carried out. The sequences of thermophilic microorganisms with the same taxonomic position were revealed both in the hot springs and bottom sediments. Some microbial species occurred only in the hydrotherm samples or only in those from the sediments. Gas-saturated fluids from the hydrocarbon generation zone at the depth of 4‒6 km are the most probable source of thermophilic microorganisms in the bottom sediments.

Abstract:Lake Baikal is the deepest (~1.6 km) and most voluminous freshwater reservoir on Earth. Compared to plankton, its benthos remains poorly explored. Here, we ask whether latitude and/or depth determine benthic microbial community structure and how Baikal communities compare to those of other freshwater, brackish and marine sediments. To answer, we collected sediment upper layers (0–1 cm) across a ~600 km North-South transect covering the three basins of the lake and from littoral to bathybenthic depths (0.5–1450 m). Analysis of 16S and 18S rRNA gene amplicon sequences revealed communities with high richness and evenness where rare operational taxonomic units (OTUs) collectively dominated. Archaea represented up to 25% or prokaryotic sequences. Baikal sediments harbored typically marine eukaryotic and prokaryotic OTUs recently identified in some lakes (diplonemids, Bolidophyceae, Mamiellales, SAR202, marine-like <i>Synechococcus</i>, Pelagibacterales) but also SAR324, Syndiniales and Radiolaria. We hypothesize that, beyond the salinity barrier, adaptation to oligotrophy explains the presence of these otherwise typically marine lineages. Baikal core benthic communities were relatively stable across sites and seemed not determined by depth or latitude. Comparative analyses with other freshwater, brackish and marine prokaryotic sediment communities confirmed the distinctness of Baikal benthos, which include elements of similarity to marine and hydrothermally influenced systems.
