Abstract:The production of livestock wastewater, which is rich in phosphorous (P), is increasing rapidly in many countries. However, the management and recycling of livestock wastewater are insufficient. Livestock wastewater treatment facilities are not constructed enough due to cost and technical problems. Therefore, to reduce environmental pollution by P and to recycle P resources for human use, an effective and efficient P recovery method is needed. In this study, we treated livestock wastewater with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and magnesium chloride (MgCl 2 ), and applied the precipitate as a fertilizer on tomato and oilseed rape crops. Magnesium (Mg)-induced precipitation successfully decreased the concentration of P in livestock wastewater and the precipitates contained high levels of P, Mg, and potassium (K), suggesting the potential for use as a fertilizer. Application of this precipitate as a fertilizer significantly improved plant performance, as indicated by the increase in leaf chlorophyll content, plant growth and biomass, and root nitrogen (N) content, compared with the control and commercial fertilizer treatments. Importantly, the harvested biomass, which is directly related to crop productivity, was significantly increased by precipitate application. Overall, Mg-induced precipitation enabled the removal of P from groundwater, thus facilitating nutrient recycling. This method can help reduce the contamination of groundwater and/or rivers caused by livestock wastewater, and increase the local sustainable management of not only livestock wastewater but also agricultural and household wastewater.
