Abstract:In today's construction industry, poor performance often arises due to various factors related to time, finances, and quality. These factors frequently lead to project delays and resource losses, particularly in terms of financial resources. This research addresses the Multimode Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (MRCPSP), a real-world challenge that takes into account the time value of money and project payment planning. In this context, project activities exhibit discrete cost profiles under different execution conditions and can be carried out in multiple ways. This paper aims to achieve two primary objectives: minimizing the net present value of project costs and project completion times while simultaneously improving the project's productivity index. To accomplish this, a mathematical programming model based on certain assumptions is proposed. Several test cases are designed, and they are rigorously evaluated using the methodology outlined in this paper to validate the modeling approach. Recognizing the NP-hard nature of this problem, a multi-objective genetic algorithm capable of solving large-scale instances is developed. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed solution is assessed by comparing it to the performance of the NSGA-II algorithm using well-established efficiency metrics. Results demonstrate the superior performance of the algorithm introduced in this study.

Abstract:This study addresses the multi-objective multi-mode resource-constrained project scheduling problem with payment planning where the activities can be done through one of the possible modes and the objectives are to maximize the net present value and minimize the completion time concurrently. Moreover, renewable resources including manpower, machinery, and equipment as well as non-renewable ones such as consumable resources and budget are considered to make the model closer to the real-world. To this end, a non-linear programming model is proposed to formulate the problem based on the suggested assumptions. To validate the model, several random instances are designed and solved by GAMS-BARON solver applying the ε-constraint method. For the high NP-hardness of the problem, we develop two metaheuristics of non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II and multi-objective simulated annealing algorithm to solve the problem. Finally, the performances of the proposed solution techniques are evaluated using some well-known efficient criteria.

Abstract:Real-world projects encounter numerous issues, challenges, and assumptions that lead to changes in scheduling. This exposure has prompted researchers to develop new scheduling models, such as those addressing constrained resources, multi-skill resources, and activity pre-emption. Constrained resources arise from competition among projects for limited access to renewable resources. This research presents a scheduling model with constrained multi-skill and multi-mode resources, where activity durations vary under different scenarios and allow for partial pre-emption due to resource shortages. The main innovation is the pre-emption of activities when resources are unavailable, with defined minimum and maximum delivery time windows. For this purpose, a multi-objective mathematical programming model is developed that considers Bertsimas and Sim's robust model in uncertain conditions. The model aims to minimize resource consumption, idleness, and project duration. The proposed model was solved using a multi-objective genetic algorithm and finally, its validation was completed and confirmed. Analysis shows that limited renewable resources can lead to increased activity pre-emption and extended project timelines. Additionally, higher demand raises resource consumption, reducing availability and prolonging project duration. Increasing the upper time window extends project time while decreasing the lower bound pressures resources, leading to higher consumption and resource scarcity.

Abstract:Purpose Project managers bear the responsibility of selecting and developing resource scheduling methods that align with project requirements and organizational circumstances. This study focuses on resource-constrained project scheduling in multi-project environments. The research simplifies the problem by adopting a single-project perspective using gain coefficients. Design/methodology/approach It employs uncertainty theory and multi-objective programming to construct a model. The optimal solution is identified using Matlab, while LINGO determines satisfactory alternatives. By combining these methods and considering actual construction project situations, a compromise solution closely approximating the optimal one is derived. Findings The study provides fresh insights into modeling and resolving resource-constrained project scheduling issues, supported by real-world examples that effectively illustrate its practical significance. Originality/value The research highlights three main contributions: effective resource utilization, project prioritization and conflict management, and addressing uncertainty. It offers decision support for project managers to balance resource allocation, resolve conflicts, and adapt to changing project demands.

Abstract:As the construction industry grows year by year, optimization of resources is becoming essential to reduce their required number, their costs and as a consequence the total cost of the project. Project managers have to face problems regarding management of cost, time, and available resources for single projects. What is more challenging is to optimize the available resources for multiple projects, which would result in appreciable savings. Most of the companies in the construction industry commonly optimize the resources for single project. However, with the presence of several mega projects in many developing countries running at the same time, there is a need for a model to enhance the efficiency of available resources among multiple simultaneous projects. This paper discusses a numerical model of cost optimization and allocation of up to nine resources for up to three projects for a given company, taking into consideration the transportation of resources from one project to another and the cost of unused resources. The model was developed using a genetic algorithm, and it is used on the identified critical resources. It calculates the cost of each resource, minimizes the cost of extra resources, cost of unused resources, and generates the schedule of each project within a selected overall program.

Abstract:This study emphasizes that project scheduling and material ordering (time and quantity of an order) must be considered simultaneously to minimize the total cost, as setting the material ordering decisions after the project scheduling phase leads to non-optimal solutions. Hence, this paper mathematically formulates the model for the multi-mode resource-constrained project scheduling with material ordering (MRCPSMO) problem. In order to be more realistic, bonus and penalty policies are included for the project. The objective function of the model consists of four elements: the material holding cost, the material ordering cost, the bonus paid by the client and the cost of delay in the project completion. Since MRCPSMO is NP-hard, the paper proposes three hybrid meta-heuristic algorithms called PSO-GA, GA-GA and SA-GA to obtain near-optimal solutions. In addition, the design of experiments and Taguchi method is used to tune the algorithms’ parameters. The proposed algorithms consist of two components: an outside search, in which the algorithm searches for the best schedule and mode assignment, and the inside search, which determines the time and quantity of orders of the nonrenewable resources. First, a comparison is made for each individual component with the exact or best solutions available in the literature. Then, a set of standard PROGEN test problems is solved by the proposed hybrid algorithms under fixed CPU time. The results reveal that the PSO-GA algorithm outperforms both GA-GA and SA-GA algorithms and provides good solutions in a reasonable time.

Abstract:Speeding up a project's duration will definitely increase the cost and decrease the quality. The previous literatures were mainly related to project planning and controlling which mainly focus on cost-time tradeoff. However, limited researches have been referred to project quality based on mathematical methodologies. This paper proposes a tradeoff problem on time-cost-quality performance. A computer-based Pareto multi-objective optimization approach is utilized for solving the tradeoff problems. The approach can help searching near the reality Pareto-optimal set while not receiving any information on the stakeholders' preference for time, cost and quality. Based on the developed approach, decision-making can become easy according to the sorted non-dominated solutions and project preferences.

Abstract:This paper presents a mixed-integer linear programming formulation for the multi-mode resource-constrained project scheduling problem with uncertain activity durations. We consider a two-stage robust optimisation approach and find solutions that minimise the worst-case project makespan, whilst assuming that activity durations lie in a budgeted uncertainty set. Computational experiments show that this easy-to-implement formulation is many times faster than the current state-of-the-art solution approach for this problem, whilst solving over 40% more instances to optimality over the same benchmarking set.

Abstract:The proper trade-off between various project costs is often disregarded when planning projects. This leads to several detrimental effects, such as inaccurate planning and higher total cost, far more significant in a multi-project environment. To overcome this limitation, this study proposes a combined approach for the multi-project scheduling and material ordering problem (MPSMOP), which maintains the proper trade-off among various costs. Moreover, the environmental impact and project quality objectives are optimized alongside the economic criterion. The proposed methodology involves three stages: (a) quantifying the environmental performance of suppliers; (b) measuring the activities' quality through the Construction Quality Assessment System approach; and (c) building and solving the mathematical model of the MPSMOP. The MPSMOP is modeled as a tri-objective optimization approach aiming to determine project scheduling and material ordering decisions so that the net present value, environmental score, and total quality of implemented projects are maximized simultaneously. As the proposed model comes into the nondeterministic polynomial optimization problem category, two powerful metaheuristics are customized and used to solve the problem. The efficiency of both algorithms was assessed on several datasets. The proposed framework is applied to railway construction projects in Iran as a case study, which presents the validity of the model and the decision-making options provided to managers.

Abstract:This paper proposes to consider alternative project structures when dealing with the multi-mode resource-constrained project scheduling problem. An AND-OR network is used to present this alternative project structures innovatively. The problem is formulated as a bi-objective linear integer program, which minimizes the makespan and total cost. A hybrid metaheuristic is developed based on AND-OR network to solve this NP-hard problem efficiently, which nests adapted Tabu Search (outer layer) and NSGA-II algorithm (inner layer). A large amount of computational experiments of different sizes are conducted, and compared with solutions generated by CPLEX, traditional Tabu Search, enumeration-based method and single-layer NSGA-II. The experimental results show the advantages of the proposed model and method, especially with large-size problems.

Abstract:A multi-agent optimization method is proposed to solve the preemptive resource-constrained project scheduling problem in which activities are allowed to be preempted no more than once. The proposed method involves a multi-agent system, a negotiation process, and two types of agents (activity agents and schedule agent). The activity agents and the schedule agent negotiate with each other to allocate resources and optimize the project schedule. Computational experiments were conducted using the standard project scheduling problem sets. Compared with prior studies, results of the proposed method are competitive in terms of project makespan. The method can be extended to other preemptive resource-constrained project scheduling problems.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to consider one of the recent and practical extensions of the resource-constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) termed as the multi-skill resource-constrained project scheduling problem (MSRCPSP) for investigation. The objective is the minimization of the makespan or total project duration. Design/methodology/approach To solve this complex problem, the authors propose a teaching–learning-based optimization (TLBO) algorithm in which self-study and examination have been used as additional features to enhance its exploration and exploitation capabilities. An activity list-based encoding scheme has been modified to include the resource assignment information because of the multi-skill nature of the algorithm. In addition, a genetic algorithm (GA) is also developed in this work for the purpose of comparisons. The computational experiments are performed on 216 test instances with varying complexity and characteristics generated for the purpose. Findings The results obtained after computations show that the TLBO has performed significantly better than GA in terms of average percentage deviation from the critical path-based lower bound for different combinations of three parameters, namely, skill factor, network complexity and modified resource strength. Research limitations/implications The modified TLBO proposed in this paper can be conveniently applied to any product or service organization wherein human resources are involved in executing project activities. Practical implications The developed model can suitably handle resource allocation problems faced in real-life large-sized projects usually administered in software development companies, consultancy firms, R&D-based organizations, maintenance firms, big construction houses, etc. wherein human resources are involved. Originality/value The current work aims to propose an effective metaheuristic for a more realistic version of MSRCPSP, in which resource requirements of activities may be more than one. Moreover, to enhance the exploration and exploitation capabilities of the original TLBO, the authors use two additional concepts, namely, self-study and examination in the search process.

Abstract:Modern project managers cope with significant challenges to schedule and control projects considering dynamic environments, frequent uncertainties, strict project deadlines, and stricter sustainable requirements above all. Sustainability taking into account resource utilization has been recently associated with project management. Hence, this paper presents a new mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model with two objectives for a resource-constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) with multiple skills and multiple modes, assuming preemptive and non-preemptive activities in an uncertain environment. Given the importance of sustainable developments in projects, the considered objectives are to maximize job opportunities and minimize project duration, resource costs, and total energy consumption. To deal with the model, an AUGNMECON2VIKOR algorithm is utilized to create Pareto solutions. In this model, project activities can be crashed by allocating extra resources. Furthermore, multi-skill resources are used to perform project activities. This study also investigates the impact of these resources on project scheduling. To deal with uncertain circumstances, a fuzzy chance-constrained programming method is employed to develop a robust possibilistic programming model. With respect to the increasing significance of sustainability in project management, this study pioneers the examination of the impact of sustainable factors on project scheduling. Finally, the proposed formulation is validated using instances from the well-known PSPLIB and MMLIB test sets. Finally, a comparison is drawn between the presented solution method considering AUGMECON2VIKOR and AUGMECON2.
Integrated optimization of project scheduling and multi-scale resource allocation problem

Abstract:Project scheduling problems are prevalent in the field of project management.Resources are essential for project execution and critical for successful completion of project schedule.Project scheduling and resource allocation are interdependent and interrelated with each other.In practice,many construction projects share characteristics that consist of numerous activities,including long period and large fluctuation of resource requirements.To improve resource utilization,the volatility of resource demand for long-term is taken into consideration.This paper investigates the integration of project scheduling and multi-scale resource allocation.Firstly,resource constrained project scheduling sub-problem and multi-scale resource allocation sub-problem are stated and formulated by mathematical models.Resource constrained project scheduling problem is to determine the start time of each activity,which is subjected to precedence relationship and available resource constraints,in order to minimize the total makespan of the project.In multi-scale resource allocation problem,the plan horizon is divided into many stages with different scales,such as long term,medium term and short term.Resources are purchased or rented during these multi-scale stages in order to satisfy resource requirement and minimize the total resource cost.These two optimization problems are integrated into a bi-objective optimization model of project scheduling and multi-scale resource allocation to minimize makespan and resource cost.Since the problem is NP-hard,an effective two-level heuristic based on PSO is designed for solving the problem.The outer level of the heuristic is that a PSO is used to generate an optimal project scheduling plan.The inner level is a linear integer programming (LIP) of multi-scale resource allocation problem solved by CPLEX.The basic idea is that PSO in outer level searches for a lot of particles at first.Each particle represents a feasible project scheduling plan.We then calculate the amount of resource requirements in each time slot.These resource requirements are input parameters of the inner LIP model.The study solves the LIP by CPLEX,project scheduling plan,and obtains an optimal resource allocation plan.In addition,project scheduling plan and corresponding optimal resource allocation plan are developed to compute the degree of fitness according to objective function.Then new particles are generated by PSO mechanism.The above process is repeated until the termination condition is met.A group of cases with varying problem scales are illustrated and numerical experiments are conducted.The proposed approach is verified to be effective to solve the problem.Experiments also show that by comparing to single scale resource allocation strategy,the multi-scale resource allocation strategy is more flexible,and better on resource cost reduction,resource utility improvement,and reduction of resource waste.The findings of this study about the importance of integrating project scheduling and multi-scale resource allocation conform to the actual needs,and can support project managers to make decisions.

Abstract:This research investigates an integrated problem of construction scheduling and resource allocation. Inspired by complex construction practices, multi-time scale resources are considered for different length of terms, such as permanent staff and temporary workers. Differing from the common stochastic optimization problems, the resource price is supposed to be an uncertain parameter of which probability distribution is unknown, but observed data is given. Hence, the problem here is called Data-Driven Construction Scheduling and Multiscale Resource Allocation Problem (DD-CS&MRAP). Based on likelihood robust optimization, a multiobjective programming is developed where project completion time and expected resource cost are minimized simultaneously. To solve the problem efficiently, a double-layer metaheuristic comprised of Multiple Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO) and interior point method named MOPSO-interior point algorithm is designed. The new solution presentation scheme and decoding process are developed. Finally, a construction case is used to validate the proposed method. The experimental results indicate that the MOPSO-interior point algorithm can reduce resource cost and improve the efficiency of resource utilization.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to develop a multi-objective mathematical programming model for the trade-off of time, cost, and quality in the project-scheduling problem (PSP) by taking priorities and resource constraints as well as activity preemption into account. First, a small-sized problem instance that was a sub-project of an oil and gas construction project was used for te validation of the proposed model and algorithm. Subsequently, considering the sensitivity, complexity, and importance of oil and gas projects, the proposed model was implemented in a large-sized oil and gas construction project. Considering the NP-hardness of this problem, the NSGA-II metaheuristic algorithm was used to deal with the time, cost, and quality trade-off problem. Finally, a sensitivity analysis was implemented on the three main parameters of time, cost, and quality to investigate the effects of changes on the results. The findings show that the proposed model is more sensitive to cost changes, so an increase in project costs leads to a drastic change in the values of other objective functions.

Abstract:Considering the characteristics of time-of-use tariffs and multi-shifts in real-life project execution scenarios, we present a multi-mode resource-constrained project scheduling problem with multi-shift and time-of-use tariffs (MRCPSP-MS-TOU). The MRCPSP-MS-TOU is a bi-objective scheduling problem that aims to simultaneously minimise both project duration and energy costs. In this problem, renewable resources are the critical equipment that consumes the most energy and can work continuously for multiple shifts. Activities that require critical equipment with high energy consumption are given priority for shifts with lower electricity prices under time-of-use tariffs. We construct a mixed integer linear programming model for the MRCPSP-MS-TOU. For small-scale projects, the ε -constraint method is implemented to solve the MRCPSP-MS-TOU using the Gurobi optimiser. For large-scale projects, this paper develops meta-heuristic algorithms in the framework of the two non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm versions. The MRCPSP-MS-TOU enables manufacturers and the construction industry to schedule projects using time-of-use tariffs and multi-shifts in a more efficient manner since it can control the intensity of energy consumption, reduce project costs, make full use of energy-intensive equipment, and effectively reduce order delivery time.

Abstract:In this paper, a project scheduling problem with multi-modes and a single non-renewable resource is considered. The resource is released in pre-specified times at pre-specified quantities. An activity can be executed at different modes where a mode is defined by a processing time and a resource requirement amount. The objective is to minimize the project completion time. A branch and bound algorithm that enumerates the partial solutions based on the mode assignment decisions is presented. The results of the experiments have revealed that the branch and bound algorithm can solve problem instances with up to 100 activities in reasonable times.

Abstract:Purpose For successful management of construction projects, a precise analysis of the balance between time and cost is imperative to attain the most effective results. The aim of this study is to present an innovative approach tailored to tackle the challenges posed by time-cost trade-off (TCTO) problems. This objective is achieved through the integration of the multi-verse optimizer (MVO) with opposition-based learning (OBL), thereby introducing a groundbreaking methodology in the field. Design/methodology/approach The paper aims to develop a new hybrid meta-heuristic algorithm. This is achieved by integrating the MVO with OBL, thereby forming the iMVO algorithm. The integration enhances the optimization capabilities of the algorithm, notably in terms of exploration and exploitation. Consequently, this results in expedited convergence and yields more accurate solutions. The efficacy of the iMVO algorithm will be evaluated through its application to four different TCTO problems. These problems vary in scale – small, medium and large – and include real-life case studies that possess complex relationships. Findings The efficacy of the proposed methodology is evaluated by examining TCTO problems, encompassing 18, 29, 69 and 290 activities, respectively. Results indicate that the iMVO provides competitive solutions for TCTO problems in construction projects. It is observed that the algorithm surpasses previous algorithms in terms of both mean deviation percentage (MD) and average running time (ART). Originality/value This research represents a significant advancement in the field of meta-heuristic algorithms, particularly in their application to managing TCTO in construction projects. It is noteworthy for being among the few studies that integrate the MVO with OBL for the management of TCTO in construction projects characterized by complex relationships.
