Abstract:In the knowledge economy the one sure source of lasting competitive advantage is knowledge. In the theoretical field, interest in knowledge management has grown dramatically. In the business community, organizations are coming to regard knowledge-based intangible assets such as technological know-how and innovation as their most valuable and strategic resource, and they are also increasingly realizing that they must effectively and efficiently manage and cultivate their knowledge and competencies to maintain sustainable competitive advantage. However, there is scarcity on knowledge strategy toward dynamically integrating technological innovation with knowledge management in academic and practical domain. Therefore, based on some theories such as technological innovation, strategic management, transaction cost economics, organizational learning and knowledge management, the framework of knowledge strategy and the model of knowledge-based communities of creation are put forward and analyzed empirically in this paper. Several important knowledge management practices to push technological innovation process are discussed.

To do this, it first reviews selected past knowledge management activity, especially that published in KMRP , including descriptions, predictions, initiatives and other research agendas. This merges into a consideration of the current states of knowledge management literature and knowledge management practice, and some issues that need to be taken into account for the future. These are used to synthesise an agenda whose key feature is research on practice, not just research and practice.

Abstract:Purpose Knowledge management (KM) and organization strategy are both important to the success of an organization. This study aims to assess the research needs of their interrelationship. Design/methodology/approach The research is based on a collection of over 200 interviews of KM worldwide experts. Their inputs have been categorized based on the frequency of their occurrence. Findings This study looked at the research themes recommended by the experts and concluded that KM is to be regarded as a factor for the formulation and implementation of the organization strategy. Research limitations/implications The sample of scholars and practitioners interviewed, the analysis approach used and the use of broad questions and dimensions are some of the limitations of this study. Nevertheless, a variety of effects KM has on the formulation and implementation of company strategy has emerged. Practical implications Organizations would improve their chances of success in a changing and competitive world by integrating the KM approach, methods and goals within the articulation of their strategy. Originality/value This study is original in variety because of the wide demographic sample supplied, and to its involvement both of KM academic experts as well as of practitioners. Its value is in the recommendations on the research of KM and organization strategy that would be of value, not only to organizations looking for ways to make their strategy more effective but also to those willing to implement KM in a better way.

Abstract:Aiming to emphasize the effect of knowledge management practices during software development projects, this research paper presents a first approach to cope with knowledge management and engineering practices across software development projects. The main goal is to define a roadmap for representative software development life cycle tasks during a typical software project development. The research introduces an ongoing architectural case study using software maintenance tasks as a means to enhance the knowledge flows within the organization. Software maintainers validate, correct and update knowledge from previous phases of software development life cycle through the application of back flushing technique at the software data warehouse. Further research developments will present a detailed guidance model for both research areas: knowledge management for software engineering combining insights across corporate software projects as a means of evaluating the effects on people and organization, technology, workflows and processes.

Abstract:Nowadays, knowledge is considered a key resource for organizations, crucial for obtaining long-term sustainable competitive. In line with this principle, many organizations are making efforts toward the implementation of knowledge management (KM) initiatives, recognizing that their competitive foundation lies in the effective way to capture, retain, store and share knowledge. Although companies are increasingly competing based on their ability to effectively manage knowledge, there are still numerous challenges for organizations that intend to implement a KM system. Thus, for a successful implementation of KM in organizations, it is crucial to understand which factors are critical for the effectiveness of KM processes and lead to competitive advantage. Although there are many studies related to critical success factors of KM, few bring together the CSFs in a systematic and extensive manner. This paper aims to have a comprehensive and up-to-date view of the critical factors that lead to the success of KM implementations in organizations. Data was collected from a systematic literature review, using PRISMA flow diagram to summarize it. The critical success factors collected were standardized and categorized into categories and dimensions. In this sense, 25 categories of critical success factors were created and categorized in 4 dimensions: Organization, Technology, Knowledge and KM Capability, and External Influence. The results found suggest that factors related to the organization and people, such as the definition of a clear strategy, the definition of performance measures to evaluate and monitor the strategy, the involvement of top management, or even the organizational culture itself, represent some of the factors that have the most influence on the successful implementation of KM initiatives. With this research, it is expected to contribute from a theoretical perspective to the KM area through the compilation, categorization and classification of a set of critical success factors reported in the literature. From a practical perspective, the results of this study can help any organization, regardless of sector, supporting the preparation and improvement of strategies in this area.

Abstract:By facilitating the capture, organization, and dissemination of knowledge within and beyond the institution, knowledge management (KM) in higher education institutions (HEIs) fuels innovation, enhances research impact, and strengthens collaboration, ultimately leading to the creation of new knowledge and its valuable exchange. However, there is still much to explore in terms of the enablers of knowledge creation, sharing, and transfer. Therefore, this paper aims to identify the enablers of effective KM in the Polytechnique University of Leiria, which serves as a benchmark for other higher education institutions due to its leadership role in RUN-EU, a consortium of European universities. To achieve this, a narrative analysis based on information from SCOPUS and the institute's website, focusing on innovation, research, and development strategies, is proposed. The findings suggest that for KM initiatives to be successful, they need to be strategically designed, culturally supported, technologically enabled, and integrated into existing workflows.

Abstract:Knowledge management (KM) involves collecting, organizing, storing, and disseminating information to improve decision-making, innovation, and performance. Implementing KM at scale has become essential for organizations to effectively leverage vast accessible data. This paper is a compilation of concepts that emerged from KM workshops hosted by EMBL-EBI, attended by SMEs and industry. We provide guidance on envisioning, executing, evaluating, and evolving knowledge management platforms. We emphasize essential considerations such as setting knowledge domain boundaries and measuring success, as well as the importance of making knowledge accessible for downstream applications and non-computational users and highlights necessary personal and organizational skills for success. We stress the importance of collaboration and the need for convergence on shared principles and commitment to provide or seek resources to advance KM. The community is invited to join the journey of KM and contribute to the advancement of the field by applying and improving on the guidelines described.

Abstract:At present time educational and scientific organizations face dynamic and competitive environments that urge for innovation in their knowledge transfer processes. For that, they can count on a set of tools and techniques to better manage knowledge. Thus, the objective of this study is to suggest Knowledge Management tools and techniques that favor the transfer of knowledge in the development of organizational processes. The study carried out in the lato sensu postgraduate sector of a university located in the south of Brazil which started its activities 30 years ago, has a qualitative and exploratory character, as the methodological procedures employed were documentary research and an ethnography study. The primary data was collected through participant observation. The findings show that there are three major organizational processes in Educational institutions: "enrolling students", "accompanying students" and "operationalizing classes". Those processes involve 18 activities resulting in the fragmentation of knowledge. Thus, six Knowledge Management tools and techniques were suggested to support knowledge transfer in the organizational processes namely: benchmarking, practical community, collaboration tools, lessons learned, best practices, and storytelling.

Since the origin of all tangible resources lies outside the firm, and outside resources cannot obtain the sustainable competitive advantage, it follows that competitive advantage is more likely to arise from the intangible firm-specific knowledge. Now, more and more corporate strategy theorists have considered the firm as a body of knowledge; accordingly, management of knowledge is becoming a firms' routine work. Abstract:This paper focuses on the first phase of research that sought to encourage discussion and to promote a better understanding of the effects of strategic knowledge management (SKM) on innovation and performance in the Portuguese footwear industry. The rationale for the research is based on the understanding that innovation has played a major role in the recent good performance of this industry, building up its global market share and increasing employment and value in the context of Portugal’s economic recession. This empirical study, to our knowledge, is the first to examine the interface between SKM, innovation and performance in the footwear industry. The research used a qualitative methodology, gathering data through semi-structured interviews with three chief executive officers of footwear firms and three academic specialists in SKM and innovation. After doing content analysis, we found support for our initial expectation that SKM effects can be inferred whenever shifts in a firm’s performance occur as a result of technological and/or organisational innovations. We further propose a model of relationships between SKM, innovation and performance, which will be assessed in a second phase using a quantitative approach.

Abstract:Active participation of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the digital revolution is jeopardised due to low technology adoption and inept management of skills and innovation resources. Apparently, firms that contrive firm knowledge proficiently qualify to address the demands of a new environment. As SMEs contend with their know-how, it becomes essential to practice Knowledge Management (KM). However, to avoid implementation failure and ease prioritisation of resources, being aware of Critical Success Factors (CSFs) of KM is vital. As research on CSFs of KM in SMEs has been inherently insufficient and inconsistent with literature on Critical Failure Factors (CFFs) of KM, there was a need to revise discussion on and propose an enhanced set of four CSFs of KM for SMEs by adopting the "Theory Adaptation" research design by amalgamating CSFs and CFFs of KM. Later, a discussion on KM planning followed to facilitate application of the proposed CSFs.

Abstract:The modern knowledge management (KM) research field is now roughly quarter of a century old – some of the seminal KM books were published in later part of 1990ʹs and the key KM journals such as KMRP and JKM were established around the turn of the millennium (see, e.g., Schiuma et al., 2020 ). The KM research field has been growing and evolving constantly. For example, in 2018 we received 373 original submissions for the KMRP journal while in 2020 the number of submissions had increased to 625 submissions. A similar growth trend can be observed in the number of article downloads: in 2018 in total 15.550 articles were downloaded from KMRP website while in 2020 the number had increased to 72.501. In light of these numbers both the KM research field and the KMRP journal seem to be doing fine.

Abstract:Purpose Knowledge management effects on business performances are of great importance for companies. Yet, they are still overlooked by current literature. Moreover, the use of methods for bibliometric reviews and content analysis reinforces the need for relevant work on the current state of knowledge management application. To this end, this study aims to identify the main barriers for the application of knowledge management in small and medium-sized enterprises. A research agenda is then proposed. Design/methodology/approach A systematic literature review was performed using data collection, bibliometric analysis and content analysis' steps. The sample used in this study contained 45 papers. For the bibliometric analysis, the authors used the bibliometrix (in RStudio). The content analysis was then performed to infer barriers, factors of relevance and an agenda of questions for future research. Findings The authors found that using knowledge management techniques to optimize business performance results in competitive advantages for small and medium-sized companies. This study contributes to both practitioners and academics by providing a list of 19 barriers, 12 factors and 36 research questions related to knowledge management in small and medium-sized companies to develop future theoretical and practical studies. Originality/value This study demonstrates the propensity and interest of small and medium-sized companies in using knowledge management. However, some barriers might make it difficult to implement this approach.

Abstract:Purpose: This study sought to examine knowledge management strategies in remote work environments. Methodology: The study adopted a desktop research methodology. Desk research refers to secondary data or that which can be collected without fieldwork. Desk research is basically involved in collecting data from existing resources hence it is often considered a low cost technique as compared to field research, as the main cost is involved in executive’s time, telephone charges and directories. Thus, the study relied on already published studies, reports and statistics. This secondary data was easily accessed through the online journals and library. Findings: The findings reveal that there exists a contextual and methodological gap relating to knowledge management strategies in remote work environments. Preliminary empirical review of revealed that effective Knowledge Management (KM) strategies in remote work environments required adapting traditional practices to leverage advanced technological tools, foster a culture of trust and collaboration, and provide continuous support and training for employees. It highlighted the pivotal role of technology in maintaining information flow and real-time collaboration, the importance of an organizational culture that encourages knowledge sharing, and the necessity of regular training and support to sustain KM practices. By integrating these elements, organizations could enhance efficiency, innovation, and employee satisfaction in remote work settings. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: The Social Exchange Theory, Nonaka’s Knowledge Creation Theory and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) may be used to anchor future studies on knowledge management strategies in remote work environments. The study recommended enhancing technology integration with AI and ML, fostering a collaborative culture, providing continuous training, implementing structured knowledge-sharing practices, enhancing organizational support and resources, and developing flexible KM policies to address the challenges of remote work environments. It contributed to theory by integrating concepts from various KM theories, to practice by offering actionable recommendations for improving KM strategies, and to policy by highlighting the need for adaptable KM policies that balance data security with accessibility and promote continuous learning.Top of Form

Abstract:This article offers a critique of knowledge management. The critique is empirically based on the case study of a Danish software production company's (A‐Soft) knowledge management strategy of implementing an information technology (IT) tool known as ‘knowledge centre’ (KC). The article argues: (1) the discourses on knowledge and learning informing KC and everyday practice are incompatible. KC conceptualizes knowledge as a resource that can be stored and retrieved from databases, and learning as an individual acquisition. The company's existing practice of knowledge sharing and learning seems better conceived from a situated and embodied perspective, seeing knowledge as an enactment inseparable from action, and learning as social participation. (2) The management's preoccupation with implementing technological solutions for codifying, archiving, and creating global access to information is conflicting with the practitioners' focus on seeking context‐rich information through collegial networks. Moreover, it is suggested that cultivation of a culture where viable communities of practice and collegial networks can flourish may be more important than technological advancement. (3) The strategy of exercising knowledge management through control and ownership invokes a discourse that threatens to subjectify the employees as replaceable resources in a lifelong learning imperative.

Abstract:In the global competition, companies are propelled by an immense pressure to innovate. The trend to produce more new knowledge-intensive products or services and the rapid progress of information technologies arouse huge interest on knowledge management for innovation. However the strategy of knowledge management is not widely adopted for innovation in industries due to a lack of an effective approach of their integration. This study aims to help the designers to innovate more efficiently based on an integrated approach of knowledge management. Based on this integrated approach, a prototype of distributed knowledge management system for innovation is developed. An industrial application is presented and its initial results indicate the applicability of the approach and the prototype in practice.

Abstract:The resource-based strategy paradigm emphasizes the importance of firm-specific assets and knowledge, variously referred to as core competencies and distinctive capabilities. This perspective on sources of competitive advantage is complemented by knowledge and learning perspectives on strategic innovation. We explore conceptual links between knowledge development and the management of strategic innovation. We argue that the management of strategic innovation is the purposeful orchestration of organizational knowledge development and application and we highlight a variety of managerial dilemmas associated with this view.

Abstract:The rise of the computer and the increasing importance of intellectual assets have compelled executives to examine the knowledge underlying their businesses and how it is used. Because knowledge management as a conscious practice is so young, however, executives have lacked models to use as guides. To help fill that gap, the authors recently studied knowledge management practices at management consulting firms, health care providers, and computer manufacturers. They found two very different knowledge management strategies in place. In companies that sell relatively standardized products that fill common needs, knowledge is carefully codified and stored in databases, where it can be accessed and used--over and over again--by anyone in the organization. The authors call this the codification strategy. In companies that provide highly customized solutions to unique problems, knowledge is shared mainly through person-to-person contacts; the chief purpose of computers is to help people communicate. They call this the personalization strategy. A company's choice of knowledge management strategy is not arbitrary--it must be driven by the company's competitive strategy. Emphasizing the wrong approach or trying to pursue both can quickly undermine a business. The authors warn that knowledge management should not be isolated in a functional department like HR or IT. They emphasize that the benefits are greatest--to both the company and its customers--when a CEO and other general managers actively choose one of the approaches as a primary strategy.
