Abstract:Summary The non‐aqueous redox flow battery (NARFB) has received extensive attention due to its unique advantages, for example, wide electrochemical window and potentially high energy density. However, the low performance of NARFB still hinders its wide application. Our previous research studies have shown that the exertion of external fields is a promising solution for improving cell performance. In this work, firstly, cyclic voltammetry (CV) is used to study the influence of ultrasonic power density on V(III)/V(II) and Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox couples on transport and electrochemical characteristics in the deep eutectic solvent (DES), which functions as the electrolyte of a NARFB. It is found that adding ultrasonic field to the DES electrolyte is an effective method to enhance mass transfer by accelerating the movement of ions. With the change of ultrasonic power density, the viscosity decreased by more than 10%. The conductivity increased from 8.58 us·cm−1 at 15°C without ultrasonic power to 14.81 us·cm−1 at 35°C and with 0.28 W·cm−2 ultrasonic power density. Then the cell performances of the Fe‐V NARFB before and after adding ultrasonic field are tested. After adding ultrasonic field, the peak power density increased from 6.94 to 8.61 mW·cm−2, with an increase of 24% compared with no ultrasonic field. The maximum current density has increased from 34.98 to 39.98 mA·cm−2, increasing by 14.29%. The results show that ultrasonic field has a significantly positive impact on the electrochemical performance of the redox couples in the DES electrolyte, thus improving the power density and maximum current density of the battery. The study of the effect of ultrasonic field on Fe‐V NARFB provides a promising prospect for the development of advanced NARFBs.
