Abstract:The utility of big data analytics (BDA) for data-driven decision-making is growing. However, its role in project decision-making remains under-researched though data is used in every phase of projects. Addressing the gap, data collected through twenty-five interviews was analysed using NVivo. The results show that there is a sense of confusion about the scope and utility of BDA for decision-making in projects. While BDA facilitates transparency in decision-making by enabling consistent evaluation of information and aids decision-making across a variety of domains, including risk, procurement and fraud management, it can also be used to mask inaccuracies, leading to poor decisions.

Abstract:Senior leaders who write off the move toward big data as a lot of big talk are making, well, a big mistake. So argue McKinsey's Barton and Court, who worked with dozens of companies to figure out how to translate advanced analytics into nuts-and-bolts practices that affect daily operations on the front lines. The authors offer a useful guide for leaders and managers who want to take a deliberative approach to big data-but who also want to get started now. First, companies must identify the right data for their business, seek to acquire the information creatively from diverse sources, and secure the necessary IT support. Second, they need to build analytics models that are tightly focused on improving performance, making the models only as complex as business goals demand. Third, and most important, companies must transform their capabilities and culture so that the analytical results can be implemented from the C-suite to the front lines. That means developing simple tools that everyone in the organization can understand and teaching people why the data really matter. Embracing big data is as much about changing mind-sets as it is about crunching numbers. Executed with the right care and flexibility, this cultural shift could have payoffs that are, well, bigger than you expect.

Abstract:A great deal of scientific research in the world aims at discovering the facts about the world so that we understand it better and find solutions to problems.Data enabling technology plays an important role in modern scientific discovery and technologic advancement.The importance of good information was long recognized by prominent leaders such as Sun Tzu and Napoleon.Factual data enables managers to measure, to understand their businesses, and to directly translate that knowledge into improved decision making and performance.This position paper argues that data analytics is ready to change engineering management in the following areas: 1) by making relevant historical data available to the manager at the time when it's needed; 2) by filtering out actionable intelligence from the ocean of data; and 3) by integrating useful data from multiple sources to support quantitative decision-making.Considering the unique need for engineering management, the paper proposes researchable topics in the two broad areas of data acquisition and data analytics.The purpose of the paper is to provoke discussion from peers and to encourage research activity.

Abstract:Globally, leaders are lighthouses that help direct followers on the right decision to make, whether in careers, entrepreneurship, personal development, education, community and social services, relationships, health, finances, and enacting purpose. In today's data-driven environment characterized by information overload, leaders and organizations seek to harness the full potential of data to improve every facet of endeavor, including leadership; thus, leaders in management and other spheres of human endeavors must rethink leadership methods in line with data analytics. This research investigates the synergistic relationship between innovative leadership and effective data analytics in organizations across different industries. The study assesses the impact of data analysis, visualization, and governance on various aspects of innovative leadership. Structured questionnaires designed using Likert scale questions and statements were used as research instruments to collect data from 490 leaders across five industries, including Accounting and Finance, Marketing, Computer and IT, Business Development, and Education. Statistical analysis, including correlation and linear regression, examined the relationships between data analytics and innovative leadership variables. The research findings support the hypotheses, demonstrating that data Analysis Influences Innovative Behavior in leadership; data Analysis is significantly and positively related to Vision and Strategic Planning; data Visualization significantly impacts Communication Skills in leadership positively; Data Visualization significantly influences Vision and Strategic Planning in leadership positively; while a positive relationship exists between Effective Data Governance and Innovative Behavior. Data analytics is critical in achieving innovative leadership and improving organizational performance. Data analysis, visualization, and governance were essential in driving innovation and fostering clear communication. The paper recommends the promotion of a culture of collaboration and open communication, investment in employee training for data analytics skills, and encouraging innovative thinking through data-driven problem-solving strategies. The research offers a foundation for further investigations into industry-specific nuances and external factors influencing the collaboration between data analytics and innovative leadership.

As the chemical engineering community is collecting more data (volume) from different sources (variety), this journey becomes more challenging in terms of using the right data and the right tools (analytics) to make the right decisions in real time (velocity). This article highlights recent big data advancements in five industries, including chemicals, energy, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, and food, and then discusses technical, platform, and culture challenges. To reach the next milestone in multiplying successes to the enterprise level, government, academia, and industry need to collaboratively focus on workforce development and innovation.

It is changing our world practically and profoundly already widely deployed in tens of thousands of applications in every discipline in an AI Arms Race that, due to its inscrutability, can lead to unfathomed risks. This paper presents an axiology of data science, its purpose, nature, importance, risks, and value for problem solving, by exploring and evaluating its remarkable, definitive features. As data science is in its infancy, this initial, speculative axiology is intended to aid in understanding and defining data science to recognize its potential benefits, risks, and open research challenges. AI based data science is inherently about uncertainty that may be more realistic than our preference for the certainty of science. Data science will have impacts far beyond knowledge discovery and will take us into new ways of understanding the world.

Abstract:Steve Jobs, one of the greatest visionaries of our time was quoted in 1996 saying "a lot of times, people do not know what they want until you show it to them" [38] indicating he advocated products to be developed based on human intuition rather than research. With the advancements of mobile devices, social networks and the Internet of Things, enormous amounts of complex data, both structured and unstructured are being captured in hope to allow organizations to make better business decisions as data is now vital for an organizations success. These enormous amounts of data are referred to as Big Data, which enables a competitive advantage over rivals when processed and analyzed appropriately. However Big Data Analytics has a few concerns including Management of Data-lifecycle, Privacy & Security, and Data Representation. This paper reviews the fundamental concept of Big Data, the Data Storage domain, the MapReduce programming paradigm used in processing these large datasets, and focuses on two case studies showing the effectiveness of Big Data Analytics and presents how it could be of greater good in the future if handled appropriately.

Abstract:SYNOPSIS This introduction to Audit Data Analytics Research overviews the forum's five articles that showcase recent advances in audit data analytics technology and methodology. The articles are discussed through the prism of design science research that originates in engineering and computer science. In contrast with natural and social sciences that aim to develop and test theories about the world, the objective of design science is to create new artifacts that are useful for solving important practical problems. In audit research, design science methodology was originally used implicitly in early studies devoted to developing and evaluating audit analytical procedures and audit sampling techniques. The recent advances in information technology necessitate renewed attention to this research methodology especially given the profound changes in accounting, auditing, and business processes currently underway.

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this article is to offer key recommendations based on the authors’ experiences for utilizing pharmacy analytics to support moving beyond standard-of-practice operational metrics towards high impact reporting to drive day-to-day decisions for frontline leaders. Summary: There is a continuous and vast amount of data generated through all facets of a health system’s daily operations, yet many data elements go unused and fail to contribute to value creation and increased performance at an organizational level. It is critical, therefore, for departments of pharmacy to identify and implement effective strategies to leverage data through robust business analytics and reporting, ensuring managers at every level are provided the information they need to support data-driven decisions and meaningful interventions in the day-to-day operations of the organization. At the authors’ institution, development and growth of a dedicated Pharmacy Analytics (PA) team has been instrumental to the pharmacy department for generating value and proactively supporting a business intelligence strategy that focuses on a data-driven management culture. Key recommendations to leverage pharmacy analytics are provided within four overarching themes: building transparency, leveraging synergy, optimizing actionability, and prioritizing partnerships. Conclusion: Through creation of a data-driven management culture, the authors provide recommendations for leveraging pharmacy analytics to reduce costs and impact outcomes across a range of hospital pharmacy operations.

Abstract:The surge in data-related investments has drawn the attention of both managers and academia to the question of whether and how this (re)shapes decision making routines. Drawing on the information processing theory of the organization and the agency theory, this paper addresses how putting a strategic emphasis on business analytics supports an analytical decision making culture that makes enhanced use of data in each phase of the decision making process, along with a potential change in authorities resulting from shifts in information asymmetry. Based on a survey of 305 medium-sized and large companies, we propose a multiple-mediator model. We provide support for our hypothesis that top management support for business analytics and perceived data quality are good predictors of an analytical culture. Furthermore, we argue that the analytical culture increases the centralization of data use, but interestingly, we found that this centralization is not associated with data-driven decision making. Our paper positions a long-running debate about information technology-related centralization of authorities in the new context of business analytics.

Abstract:Analytics have been employed by companies for several decades, but now many firms are interested in building their capabilities for artificial intelligence (AI). Many AI systems, however, are based on statistics and other forms of analytics. Companies can get a “running start” on AI by building upon their analytical competencies. The focus of this article is how to transition from analytics to AI. Three eras of analytical focus are detailed, with AI portrayed as a fourth era. The types of AI methods that are and are not based on analytics are described. AI applications that build on analytical strengths are discussed. Approaches to assessing analytical capabilities that relate to AI, and the development of an organizational plan and strategy for AI, are also described in brief.

Abstract:The use of analytics in corporate decision-making processes demands a paradigm shift within companies, and particularly among their top executives. Corporate leaders represent a major lever for this change. Therefore, a deeper understanding of their managerial capabilities, characteristics and contribution in this context is required. Aiming to provide actionable guidance on how to manage the shift to data-driven decision making, this study helps to develop a more profound understanding of this emerging managerial role by examining managerial success factors following a semi-structured interview approach. With insights from interviews with 32 top executives from Germany across different industries, this paper research proposes four managerial archetypes that are relevant to mastering the digital transformation towards analytics-based decision-making processes. Furthermore, it sheds light on the characteristics, capabilities, and contributions of the four archetypes—Analytical Thinker, Coach, Guide, and Strategist. Although the archetypes have differentiated attributes and qualities, all four seem of importance in manifesting analytics in organizations. Our findings provide guidelines to assess the top management's abilities to manage digital transformation projects. Furthermore, the results serve as basis for future empirical research on the human aspect of analytical capabilities regarding leadership.

Abstract:The data revolution has led to an increased interest in the practice of data analysis. While much has been written about statistical thinking, a complementary form of thinking that appears in the practice of data analysis is design thinking—the problem-solving process to understand the people for whom a solution is being designed. For a given problem, there can be significant or subtle differences in how a data analyst (or producer of a data analysis) constructs, creates, or designs a data analysis, including differences in the choice of methods, tooling, and workflow. These choices can affect the data analysis products themselves and the experience of the consumer of the data analysis. Therefore, the role of a producer can be thought of as designing the data analysis with a set of design principles. Here, we introduce design principles for data analysis and describe how they can be mapped to data analyses in a quantitative and informative manner. We also provide data showing variation of principles within and between producers of data analyses. Our work suggests a formal mechanism to describe data analyses based on design principles. These results provide guidance for future work in characterizing the data analytic process. Supplementary materials for this article are available online.

Looking to the future, Big Four accounting firms stress the need for data analysis skills, and universities are launching degree programs. But what is the reaction of current working professionals? Are they heeding the call for data analytics? Evidence indicates there is some resistance to adoption of data analytics practices. This research proposes the use of Status Quo Bias Theory to investigate the reactions of accounting professionals across the spectrum of accounting sub-disciplines. The study seeks to understand factors that may influence practicing accountants' resistance to adopting new data analysis technologies.

Abstract:Predictive analytics (PA) is a tool routinely used by companies to help chart a future product path. It makes extensive use of algorithms and data mining to sort out market desires and trends. It also combines a robust host of artificial intelligence tools, including machine learning, pattern recognition, natural language processing, sentiment analysis and emotion recognition, among others, to achieve more precise results. PA, though, is imperfect, as it is often subject to the whims of the marketplace. Analysing past and present data does not, in any manner, guarantee positive results. Indeed, when it comes to innovation, particularly ‘disruptive innovation’, relying on PA can lead a company down a disastrous path. Data analytics requires a method that validates innovation and uses PA as something other than an infallible crystal ball. But does the possibility of innovation automatically disavow any insights into future market trends that PA may supply? This paper attempts to place both innovation and PA into proper perspective. It considers when, where, how and why PA and innovation are paramount, but reiterates the importance of instinct, originality and creativity. To illustrate its argument, the paper draws on the history of the Sony Walkman and Apple iPod.

Abstract:The growing importance of analytics and data mining has led to the development of solutions in industry sectors such as travel and entertainment. Let’s look at sports as one example of entertainment. Here, a flagship team like the Toronto Maple Leafs or New York Yankees does not need to be very effective to achieve its goal of putting more fans in stadium seats in a cost-effective manner. The reality for these organizations is that the product they offer is highly price inelastic—that is, the price charged for the product can easily be increased or decreased with minimal impact on overall ticket demand. The use of analytics and data mining in this context is meaningless.

Abstract:Analytics corresponds to a relevant and challenging phase of Big Data. The generation of knowledge from extensive data sets (petabyte era) of varying types, occurring at a speed able to serve decision makers, is practiced using multiple areas of knowledge, such as computing, statistics, data mining, among others. In the Big Data domain, Analytics is also considered as a process capable of adding value to the organizations. Besides the demonstration of value, Analytics should also consider operational tools and models to support decision making. To adding value, Analytics is also presented as part of some Big Data value chains, such the Information Value Chain presented by NIST among others, which are detailed in this article. As well, some maturity models are presented, since they represent important structures to favor continuous implementation of Analytics for Big Data, using specific technologies, techniques and methods. Hence, through an in-depth research, using specific literature references and use cases, we seeks to outline an approach to determine the Analytical Engineering for Big Data Analytics considering four pillars: Data, Models, Tools and People; and three process groups: Acquisition, Retention and Revision; in order to make feasible and to define an organization, possibly designated as an Analytics Organization, responsible for generating knowledge from the data in the field of Big Data Analytics.
