Abstract:For 6G in 2030 and beyond, key performance metrics long for terabit-per-second, one-tenth of millisecond latency with zero jitter, millimeter-preci-sion sensing and positioning, and seamless connectivity, among others. To meet these demands, the terahertz (0.1–10 THz) band comes into the horizon, with ultra-broad bandwidth and sub-millimeter wavelength, which, however, suffers from distance limitation and power consumption concerns. In this article, four interdisciplinary directions to address the above challenges and unleash the full potential of THz communications are investigated, namely, integrated sensing and communication, ultra-mas-sive MIMO and dynamic hybrid beamforming, intelligent surfaces, and machine/deep learning. Furthermore, open problems as well as integration of these solutions are elaborated. Qualitative and quantitative studies demonstrate the benefits and performance of the proposed solutions.

Abstract:With the explosion of wireless data rates, the terahertz (THz) band (0.1-10 THz) is envisioned as a promising candidate to break the existing bandwidth bottleneck and satisfy the ever-increasing capacity demand. The THz wireless communications feature a number of attractive properties, such as potential terabit-per-second capacity and high energy efficiency. In this paper, an overview on the state-of-the-art THz communications is studied, with a special focus on key technologies of THz transceivers and THz communication systems. The recent progress on both electronic and photonic THz transmitters are presented, and then the THz receivers operating in direct- and heterodyne reception modes are individually surveyed. Based on the THz transceiver schemes, three kinds of THz wireless communication systems are reviewed, including solid-state electronic systems, photonics-assisted systems and all-photonics systems. The prospective key enabling technologies, corresponding challenges and research directions for lighting up high-speed THz communication systems are discussed as well.

Abstract:EDITORIAL: "Mind-controlled information transmission" is one of human's ultimate fantasies for the development of science and technology. On June 11, 2022, eLight Journal simultaneously published two research papers on brainwave-based metasurfaces, and proposed a new concept of metasurface controlled by mind for the first time in the world. This major scientific breakthrough rushed up to the hot search list of public media. It was read more than ten million times, and the related video has been played 600,000 times, which aroused the audience's strong interest and discussion, and really made a significant leap toward "mind control". We are greatly honored to invite Prof. Cheng-Wei Qiu from National University of Singapore, the corresponding author of both above-mentioned articles and the co-Editor-in-Chief of eLight Journal, to have an exclusive interview. Abstract:The terahertz band (0.1 THz-10 THz) with massive spectrum resources is recognized as a promising candidate for future rate-greedy applications, such as 6G communications. Optoelectronic terahertz communications are beneficial for realizing 100 Gb/s data rate and beyond, which have greatly promoted the progress of the 6G research. In this article, we give technical insight into the key technologies of optoelectronic terahertz communications with high data rates in the physical layer, including approaches of broadband devices, baseband signal processing technologies, and design of advanced transmission system architectures. A multicarrier signal processing routine with high noise tolerance is proposed and experimentally verified in a 500 Gb/s net rate terahertz communication system. Finally, we discuss the future directions of optoelectronic terahertz technologies toward the target of terabit- scale communications.

Its primary objective is to leverage the interaction between light and matter at the wavelength and sub-wavelength scales, with the purpose of designing and manufacturing miniaturized, multifunctional, and high-performance optical devices and systems. Professor Cheng Zhang from Huazhong University of Science and Technology has dedicated his career to nanophotonic device research. His work encompasses a wide range of areas, including plasmonic devices, optical metamaterials, and metasurfaces. Abstract:With a ten-year horizon from concept to reality, it is time now to start thinking about what will the sixth-generation (6G) mobile communications be on the eve of the fifth-generation (5G) deployment. To pave the way for the development of 6G and beyond, we provide 6G visions in this paper. We first introduce the state-of-the-art technologies in 5G and indicate the necessity to study 6G. By taking the current and emerging development of wireless communications into consideration, we envision 6G to include three major aspects, namely, mobile ultra-broadband, super Internet-of-Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence (AI). Then, we review key technologies to realize each aspect. In particular, teraherz (THz) communications can be used to support mobile ultra-broadband, symbiotic radio and satellite-assisted communications can be used to achieve super IoT, and machine learning techniques are promising candidates for AI. For each technology, we provide the basic principle, key challenges, and state-of-the-art approaches and solutions.

Abstract:While fifth-generation (5G) communications are being rolled out around the world, sixth-generation (6G) communications have attracted much attention from both the industry and academia. Compared with 5G, 6G will have a wider frequency band, higher transmission rate, spectrum efficiency, greater connection capacity, shorter delay, wider coverage and stronger anti-interference capability, so as to meet the various network requirements for industries. In this paper, we present a survey of potential essential technologies in 6G. In particular, we will introduce artificial intelligence, intelligent surfaces, terahertz communications technologies in detail, while giving a brief introduction to other potential technologies, including visible light communications, Blockchain-enabled wireless network, advanced duplex and holographic radio.

Abstract:A key enabler for the intelligent information society of 2030, 6G networks are expected to provide performance superior to 5G and satisfy emerging services and applications. In this article, we present our vision of what 6G will be and describe usage scenarios and requirements for multi-terabyte per second (Tb/s) and intelligent 6G networks. We present a large-dimensional and autonomous network architecture that integrates space, air, ground, and underwater networks to provide ubiquitous and unlimited wireless connectivity. We also discuss artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning [1], [2] for autonomous networks and innovative air-interface design. Finally, we identify several promising technologies for the 6G ecosystem, including terahertz (THz) communications, very-large-scale antenna arrays [i.e., supermassive (SM) multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO)], large intelligent surfaces (LISs) and holographic beamforming (HBF), orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing, laser and visible-light communications (VLC), blockchain-based spectrum sharing, quantum communications and computing, molecular communications, and the Internet of Nano-Things.

Abstract:With the open of the scale-up commercial deployment of 5G network, more and more researchers and related organizations began to consider the next generation of mobile communication system. This article will explore the 6G concept for 2030s. Firstly, this article summarizes the future 6G vision with four keywords: "Intelligent Connectivity", "Deep Connectivity", "Holographic Connectivity" and "Ubiquitous Connectivity", and these four keywords together constitute the 6G overall vision of "Wherever you think, everything follows your heart ". Then, the technical requirements and challenges to realize the 6G vision are analyzed, including peak throughput, higher energy efficiency, connection every where and anytime, new theories and technologies, self-aggregating communications fabric, and some non-technical challenges. Then the potential key technologies of 6G are classified and presented: communication technologies on new spectrum, including terahertz communication and visible light communication; fundamental technologies, including sparse theory (compressed sensing), new channel coding technology, large-scale antenna and flexible spectrum usage; special technical features, including Space-Air-Ground-Sea integrated communication and wireless tactile network. By exploring the 6G vision, requirements and challenges, as well as potential key technologies, this article attempts to outline the overall framework of 6G, and to provide directional guidance for the subsequent 6G research. Abstract:Abstract The fifth generation (5G) wireless communication networks are being deployed worldwide from 2020 and more capabilities are in the process of being standardized, such as mass connectivity, ultra-reliability, and guaranteed low latency. However, 5G will not meet all requirements of the future in 2030 and beyond, and sixth generation (6G) wireless communication networks are expected to provide global coverage, enhanced spectral/energy/cost efficiency, better intelligence level and security, etc. To meet these requirements, 6G networks will rely on new enabling technologies, i.e., air interface and transmission technologies and novel network architecture, such as waveform design, multiple access, channel coding schemes, multi-antenna technologies, network slicing, cell-free architecture, and cloud/fog/edge computing. Our vision on 6G is that it will have four new paradigm shifts. First, to satisfy the requirement of global coverage, 6G will not be limited to terrestrial communication networks, which will need to be complemented with non-terrestrial networks such as satellite and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication networks, thus achieving a space-air-ground-sea integrated communication network. Second, all spectra will be fully explored to further increase data rates and connection density, including the sub-6 GHz, millimeter wave (mmWave), terahertz (THz), and optical frequency bands. Third, facing the big datasets generated by the use of extremely heterogeneous networks, diverse communication scenarios, large numbers of antennas, wide bandwidths, and new service requirements, 6G networks will enable a new range of smart applications with the aid of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data technologies. Fourth, network security will have to be strengthened when developing 6G networks. This article provides a comprehensive survey of recent advances and future trends in these four aspects. Clearly, 6G with additional technical requirements beyond those of 5G will enable faster and further communications to the extent that the boundary between physical and cyber worlds disappears.

Abstract:The current focus of academia and the telecommunications industry has been shifted to the development of the six-generation (6G) cellular technology, also formally referred to as IMT-2030. Unprecedented applications that 6G aims to accommodate demand extreme communications performance and, in addition, disruptive capabilities such as network sensing. Recently, there has been a surge of interest in terahertz (THz) frequencies as it offers not only massive spectral resources for communication but also distinct advantages in sensing, positioning, and imaging. The aim of this paper is to provide a brief outlook on opportunities opened by this under-exploited band and challenges that must be addressed to materialize the potential of THz-based communications and sensing in 6G systems.

Abstract:Terahertz communications are envisioned as a key technology for 6G, which requires 100+ Gbps data rates, 1-millisecond latency, among other performance metrics. As a fundamental wireless infrastructure, the THz communication can boost abundant promising applications, including next-generation WLAN systems like Tera-WiFi, THz wireless backhaul, as well as other long-awaited novel communication paradigms. Serving as a basis of efficient wireless communication and networking design, this paper highlights the key THz channel features and recent advancements in device technologies. In light of these, impact and guidelines on 6G wireless communication and networking are elaborated. We believe the progress of THz technologies is helping finally close the so called THz Gap, and will realize THz communications as a pillar of 6G wireless systems.

Abstract:Sixth-generation (6G) networks are evolving toward new features and order-of-magnitude enhancement of systematic performance metrics compared to the current 5G. In particular, the 6G networks are expected to achieve extreme connectivity performance with Tbps-scale data rate, Kbps/Hz-scale spectral efficiency, and $\mu\mathrm{s}$, -scale latency. To this end, an original three-layer 6G network architecture is designed to realize uniform full-spectrum cell-free radio access and provide task-centric agile proximate support for diverse applications. The designed architecture is featured by super edge node (SEN), which integrates connectivity, computing, Al, data, etc. On this basis, a technological framework of pervasive multi-level (PML) artificial intelligence (Al) is established in the centralized unit to enable task-centric near-real-time resource allocation and network automation. We then introduce a radio access network (RAN) architecture of full spectrum uniform cell-free networks, which is among the most attractive RAN candidates for 6G $\text{TK}\mu$ extreme connectivity. A few most promising key technologies, that is, cell-free massive MIMO, photonics-assisted Terahertz wireless access, and spatiotemporal two-dimensional channel coding are further discussed. A testbed is implemented and extensive trials are conducted to evaluate innovative technologies and methodologies. The proposed 6G network architecture and technological framework demonstrate exciting potentials for full-service and full-scenario applications.

Abstract:6G is believed to go beyond communication and provide integrated sensing and computing capabilities for a vision of Connected Intelligence with everything connected, everything sensed, and everything intelligent. Integrated sensing and communication will play a vital role for the fusion of physical and cyber worlds. The exploration of higher frequency bands, larger bandwidth, and more advanced large antenna technologies is paving the way towards the goal. In particular, the study of THz opens the possibility to have high resolution sensing and imaging capability on a communication mobile device. In this paper, we take a step along this direction and justify such possibility by building a THz sensing prototype with millimeter level imaging resolution while considering the physical aperture constraint of typical mobile device.
