Abstract:It is important to explore the responses of radial tree growth in different regions to understand growth patterns and to enhance forest management and protection with climate change. We constructed tree ring width chronologies of Picea crassifolia from different regions of the Qilian Mountains of northwest China. We used Pearson correlation and moving correlation to analyze the main climate factors limiting radial growth of trees and the temporal stability of the growth–climate relationship, while spatial correlation is the result of further testing the first two terms in space. The conclusions were as follows: (1) Radial growth had different trends, showing an increasing followed by a decreasing trend in the central region, a continuously increasing trend in the eastern region, and a gradually decreasing trend in the isolated mountain. (2) Radial tree growth in the central region and isolated mountains was constrained by drought stress, and tree growth in the central region was significantly negatively correlated with growing season temperature. Isolated mountains showed a significant negative correlation with mean minimum of growing season and a significant positive correlation with total precipitation. (3) Temporal dynamic responses of radial growth in the central region to the temperatures and SPEI (the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index) in the growing season were unstable, the isolated mountains to total precipitation was unstable, and that to SPEI was stable. The results of this study suggest that scientific management and maintenance plans of the forest ecosystem should be developed according to the response and growth patterns of the Qinghai spruce to climate change in different regions of the Qilian Mountains.

Abstract:Global warming and frequent extreme drought events lead to tree death and extensive forest decline, but the underlying mechanism is not clear. In drought years, cambial development is more sensitive to climate change, but in different phenological stages, the response relationship is nonlinear. Therefore, the dynamic relationship between tree radial growth and climatic/environmental factors needs to be studied. We thus continuously monitored radial growth of Qinghai spruce ( Picea crassifolia Kom) and environmental factors from January 2021 to November 2022 using point dendrometers and portable meteorological weather stations in the central area of the Qilian Mountains. The relationship and stability between the radial growth of Qinghai spruce and environmental factors were compared for different levels of drought in 2021 and 2022. The year 2022 had higher temperatures and less precipitation and was drier than 2021. Compared with 2021, the growing period in 2022 for Qinghai spruce was 10 days shorter, maximum growth rate (Grmax) was 4.5 μm·d −1 slower, and the initiation of growth was 6 days later. Growth of Qinghai spruce was always restricted by drought, and the stem radial increment (SRI) was more sensitive to precipitation and air relative humidity. Seasonal changes in cumulative radial growth were divided into four phenological stages according to the time of growth onset, cessation, and maximum growth rate (Grmax) of Qinghai spruce. Stability responses of SRI to climate change were stronger in Stage 3 and Stage 4 of 2021 and stronger in Stage 1 (initiation growth stage) and Stage 3 of 2022. The results provide important information on the growth of the trees in response to drought and for specific managing forests as the climate warms.

Abstract:Exploring the response of intra-annual tree growth to environmental factors is critical for the understanding of the effects of climate changes on tree seasonal growth patterns. We monitored stem radial changes of Qinghai spruce (Picea crassifolia) over two growing seasons (2014 and 2015) in the Qilian Mountains of China using high-resolution point dendrometers. Our results showed that the onset of the main growth period occurred around 11 May. Soil temperature was a key environmental factor influencing the onset of tree growth. Stem radial growth commenced when soil temperature at 40cm depth was >0°C. The timing of radial growth cessation exhibited greater variability than onset, ranging from late July to early August, and was probably unrelated to climatic conditions. We found close relationships between maximum daily shrinkage (MDS) and air temperature, precipitation, soil water content, and soil temperature. Maximum and mean air temperature, relative air humidity, vapor pressure deficit, and precipitation had significant effects on daily stem radial increment (SRI). Precipitation was one of the most important factors influencing stem radial growth. Moreover, the number of precipitation days was more significant in promoting cumulative seasonal growth of Qinghai spruce than total precipitation. With climate warming, the onset of radial growth may occur earlier than before, and seasonal growth patterns of trees may change.
Alpine timberline ecotone tree growth in relation to climatic variability for Picea crassifolia forests in the middle Qilian Mountains,northwestern China

Abstract:The Picea crassifolia forests at the alpine timberline ecotone in the middle Qilain Mountains of northwestern China were examined in this study. Tree-ring cores were sampled at four different altitudes to examine the relationship between tree growth and climatic variability. The statistical characters of the chronologies suggested that the sensitivity of tree growth to climatic variability was generally low across the alpine timberline ecotone,and did not show clear trend along the altitudinal gradient,probably due to the short vertical gradient. Tree radial growth in the timberline ecotone was strongly associated with climatic indices before growing season. Tree-ring width was positively related to precipitation in the previous October,while negatively correlated with temperature in the previous July and August for most plots,with the later actually reflecting the effect of water availability in limiting tree growth in this semi-arid region.Meanwhile,tree growth was also negatively related to the current February temperature. Our results did not show clear relationship between tree-ring width and climatic condition in the current year growing season,suggesting that tree growth in timberline ecotone was not limited by growing season temperature in our study site. We reviewed existing evidence which showed that timberline tree growth was sometimes not sensitive to temperature changes in growing season.

Abstract:Global climate change is reshaping the geographical distribution of forests, especially in mountain regions. The alpine forest ecotone is expected to be affected first, due to the climatic limitations on tree growth, and is thus considered as an indicator of the forest succession to climate change. However, current studies involving tree radial growth and their responses to climate change at alpine forest ecotone remain scarce, posing challenges for predictions of forest dynamics and management strategies under different climate scenarios. Here, we studied 94 Chinese Pine (Pinus tabulaeformis; Pinaceae) and 86 Qinghai Spruce (Picea crassifolia; Pinaceae) trees along the alpine forest ecotone [2100–2400 m above sea level (a.s.l.)] to assess tree growth differences and corresponding responses to climate change in the Helan Mountains, northwestern China. The results revealed that growth rates of Chinese Pine at lowest altitudes and Qinghai Spruce at highest altitudes are strongly affected by water shortage and intraspecific competition, respectively, leading to the tree growth in these regions are inferior to those of other trees in the ecotone (the tree age at maximum width is about 20 years later than in the ecotone), especially for seedling and sapling stages. The responses of tree radial growth to dryness were broadly similar in each sample site, but wetness was more positive in trees at low altitudes than at high altitudes. Climate warming has inhibited the radial growth of Qinghai Spruce at lower distribution limits since 2005, while for Chinese Pine in the same area was not significantly affected by rising temperature, and even the upper limits of the Chinese Pine might migrate to higher altitudes as the calorific limit becomes higher. If climate warming continues, the above process may erode the Qinghai Spruce habitat, resulting in the transitional zone between Chinese Pine and Qinghai Spruce also moving to higher elevations.

Abstract:Climate change significantly impacts forest ecosystems in arid and semi-arid regions. However, spatiotemporal patterns of climate-sensitive changes in individual tree growth under increased climate warming and precipitation in north–west China is unclear. The dendrochronological method was used to study climate response sensitivity of radial growth of Picea schrenkiana from 158 trees at six sites during 1990–2020. The results show that climate warming and increased precipitation significantly promoted the growth of trees. The response to temperature first increased, then decreased. However, the response to increased precipitation and the self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index (scPDSI) increased significantly. In most areas of the Tianshan Mountains, the proportion of trees under increased precipitation and scPDSI positive response was relatively high. Over time, small-diameter trees were strongly affected by drought stress. It is predicted that under continuous warming and increased precipitation, trees in most areas of the Tianshan Mountains, especially those with small diameters, will be more affected by precipitation.

Abstract:Warming-induced drought has widely affected forest dynamics in most places of the northern hemisphere. In this study, we assessed how climate warming has affected Picea crassifolia (Qinghai spruce) forests using tree growth-climate relationships and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) along the Qilian Mountains, northeastern Tibet Plateau (the main range of Picea crassifolia). Based on the analysis on trees radial growth data from the upper tree line and the regional NDVI data, we identified a pervasive growth decline in recent decades, most likely caused by warming-induced droughts. The drought stress on Picea crassifolia radial growth were expanding from northeast to southwest and the favorable moisture conditions for tree growth were retreating along the identical direction in the study area over the last half century. Compared to the historical drought stress on tree radial growth in the 1920s, recent warming-induced droughts display a longer-lasting stress with a broader spatial distribution on regional forest growth. If the recent warming continues without the effective moisture increasing, then a notable challenge is developed for Picea crassifolia in the Qilian Mountains. Elaborate forest management is necessary to counteract the future risk of climate change effects in this region.

Abstract:Tree stem radial growth could be used to estimate forest productivity, which plays a dominant role in the carbon sink of terrestrial ecosystems. However, it is still obscure how intra-annual stem radial growth is regulated by environmental variables. Here, we monitored Qinghai spruce stem radial growth over seven years and analyzed the environmental drivers of the intra-annual stem radial changes in the Qilian Mountains at low (2700 m) and high altitudes (3200 m). We found that stem radial growth initiated when the daily mean minimum air temperature reached 1.6oC, while the cessation of stem growth was unrelated to temperatures and water conditions. Initiations of stem growth at 2700 m were significantly earlier than that at 3200 m. Maximum growth rates were observed before the summer solstice at low altitude, whereas at high altitude, the majority of them occurred after the summer solstice. Most variability in annual stem increment (AI) can be explained by the rate (Rm) than by the duration of stem growth (∆t), and 78.9 % and 69.6 % of the variability in AI were attributable to Rm for the lower and upper site, respectively. Structural equation modeling revealed that precipitation (P) could both directly positively influence stem radial increment (SRI) and indirectly positively influence SRI through influencing relative humidity (RH), but the positive effect of P on SRI was higher at low altitude than at high altitude. Daily minimum air temperature (Tmin) was also the main direct diver of SRI, and the positive effect of Tmin on SRI was higher at high altitude than at low altitude. Considering the trends in climate warming and humidification over the past decades, climate changes would result in earlier initiation of Qinghai spruce stem growth and promote the growth through positive response to increased precipitation in low altitude and through elevated temperature in high altitude, respectively.

Abstract:Dryland montane forests are important agents for soil and water resource conservation. The growth of these forests under climate warming is strongly affected by local environmental factors. However, how environmental factors impact intra-annual stem growth dynamics across environmental gradients in these regions remains unclear. This work focused on assessing seasonal patterns of stem growth across different elevations and how environmental factors impact stem growth in the Qilian Mountains, northwestern China. The stem growth of 50 Qinghai spruce trees was monitored for two years across an elevation gradient from 2500 m to 3300 m above sea level (a.s.l.). We found that growth initiation occurred later as the elevation increased, and growth commenced when elevation-specific temperature thresholds were reached. However, growth cessation presented large elevational differences: cessation occurred much earlier at low elevations (2500 m and 2700 m a.s.l.). Exceptionally early growth cessation occurred predominantly at 2700 m a.s.l., which was correlated with seasonal drought/insufficient rainfall and low soil moisture occurring since mid-July 2015. Temperature and soil moisture were the key factors governing the daily rate of stem growth in the beginning, rapid growth, and end stages. Overall, due to effects of seasonal drought and low temperature on growth cessation and growth rate, the annual growth of Qinghai spruce was rather low at both low (2500–2700 m a.s.l.) and high (3100–3300 m a.s.l.) elevations; middle elevations (approximately 2900 m a.s.l.) might be the most favorable Qinghai spruce growth. Our results implied that tree growth will likely decline at low elevations and that the optimal elevation for Qinghai spruce growth in northwestern China is expected to shift upward under future climate warming.

Abstract:Climate change has been documented in the Qilian Mountains of China, and the response of tree stem growth to environmental factors may be changed, affecting regional estimates of seasonal growth patterns and carbon sequestration. The objective of this study was to provide initial evidence for responses of intra-annual tree stem radial changes of sapling Qinghai spruce (Picea crassifolia) to climate warming in the Qilian Mountains. We monitored stem radial changes of Qinghai spruce in an open-top chamber (OTC) and out of chamber (OC) over three growing seasons (2014-2016) using high-resolution point dendrometers. Statistical analysis indicated that the differences in annual average air temperature between OTC and OC were about 1 degrees C. Our results showed that the onset of the main growth period in OTC was about one week earlier than in OC, and soil temperature played an important controlling the onset of growth in sapling Qinghai spruce. However, the timing of radial growth cessation exhibited large variability in different growth conditions. These results indicated that the end of growth may not be related to environmental factors. Daily average air temperature, vapor pressure deficit, relative air humidity, and precipitation were significantly correlated with daily stem radial increment (SRI) and tree water deficit (TWD). Further, soil water content and TWD were also correlated. SRI in OTC was larger than that in OC, while TWD exhibited no significant differences between the two growth conditions. However, cumulative seasonal growth may not be influenced by air temperature alone, but by interacting environmental factors.
Different Responses of the Radial Growth of Conifer Species to Increasing Temperature along Altitude Gradient: Pinus tabulaeformis in the Helan Mountains (Northwestern China)

Abstract:Linking the response of tree growth to global warming is a key to fully appreciating the impact of climate change on forests. To examine the impacts of temperature and precipitation on tree growth, we studied the radial growth of Pinus tabulaeformis along an altitude gradient from 2032 m a.s.l. to 2361 m a.s.l. on the Helan Mountains, which is almost the northwestern limit of P. tabulaeformis distribution in China. The results showed that, radial growth of P. tabulaeformis decreased significantly (P <0.05) at the low altitude (2032 m a.s.l.) and remained almost steady at the middle and high altitude (2200 m a.s.l. and 2361 m a.s.l.) during the past decades, which was attributed to different climate-radial growth relationships at different altitudes. Total precipitation from the previous July to the current June was an important and effective climatic factor for radial growth at all altitudes. Radial growth was negatively correlated with the mean temperature of the current March at the low altitude and was positively and negatively correlated with the mean temperature of the previous October and the current July at the high altitude, respectively. Increasing temperature of the March under the context of global warming was the main reason for growth reduction at the low altitude. Radial growth at the middle and high altitudes didn't suffer from global warming. It was inferred that conifers at low altitudes of the species' dry distribution limit were more vulnerable to global warming. To cope with possible intensified drought in the growing season and growth reduction in the future, thinning and afforestation should be carried out in the forests, especially at low altitudes.

Abstract:We analyzed the influence of climate change over the past 50 years on the radial growth of two tree species: Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) and Yezo spruce (Picea jezoensis), located on Changbai Mountain, Northeast China, using a dendrochronology approach to understand factors that limit the altitude for tree species. Elevated temperatures increased the radial growth of Korean pine and decreased that of Yezo spruce. The positive response of tree growth to hydrothermal conditions was the key reason that the upper limit of elevation of Korean pine followed the temperature fluctuation pattern. Increased temperatures and precipitation and longer growing seasons accelerated Korean pine growth. As the temperature increased, correlations between Korean pine ring-width chronology and precipitation changed from negative to positive. In Yezo spruce, increasing monthly temperatures and inadequate precipitation during the middle and late parts of the growing season led to narrow growth rings, whereas decreasing monthly temperatures and sufficient precipitation during the late growing season promoted growth. Rising temperatures and adequate precipitation increases Korean pine growth, possibly elevating the upper range limit in altitude for this species. In contrast, Yezo spruce growth is negatively affected by warming temperatures and limited precipitation. Under future temperature increases and precipitation fluctuations, the upper limit altitude of Korean pine can reasonably be expected to shift upward and Yezo spruce downward.

Abstract:Global warming would significantly impact tree growth in the Tibetan Plateau. However, the specific effects of climate change on the radial growth of Pinus wallichiana in Mount Qomolangma are still uncertain. To investigate the responses of radial growth of P. wallichiana to climate change, we analyzed tree-ring samples in Mount Qomolangma. We removed the age-related growth trends and established three chronologies by using the modified negative exponential curve, basal area index, and regional curve standardization, and conducted Pearson correlation and moving correlation analyses to examine the association between radial growth of P. wallichiana and climatic factors. The results showed that this region had experienced a significant upward trend in temperature and that the Palmer drought severity index (PDSI) indicated a decreasing trend since 1980s, while the relative humi-dity changed from a significant upward to a downward trend around 2004, implying the climate shifted toward warmer and drier. Results of Pearson correlation analysis indicated a significant and positive relationship between the radial growth of P. wallichiana and the minimum temperature of April-June and July-September, and precipitation of January-April in the current year. The radial growth of P. wallichiana was significantly and negatively associated with the relative humidity of June, July, and August in the current year. As temperature rose after 1983, the relationship between radial growth of P. wallichiana and the minimum temperature in July and September of the current year increased from a non-significant association to a significant and positive association, while the relationship between radial growth of P. wallichiana and relative humidity in August and precipitation in September of the current year changed from non-significant correlation to a significant and negative correlation. Results of the moving correlation analysis suggested that the radial growth of P. wallichiana showed a significant and stable correlation with the July-September minimum temperature of the current year. Under the background of climate warming, the rapid increases of temperature would accelerate the radial growth of P. wallichiana in Mount Qomolangma.
[Spatial and temporal variations of the responses of radial growth of Larix gmelinii to climate in the Daxing'anling Mountains of Northeast China]

Abstract:Following the distribution characteristics of Larix gmelinii in Daxing'anling Mountains, nine sampling sites along a latitude gradient were set up to analyze the spatial difference and temporal dynamic in the responses of radial growth of L. gmelinii to climate. Overall, the radial growth of L. gmelinii was positively correlated with the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) in summer (June to August), summer precipitation, February SPEI, and February preci-pitation, but was negatively correlated with the March temperature. Spatially, in the southern area of the region with higher annual average temperature, the radial growth of L. gmelinii had a significant positive correlation with February SPEI. In the northern area with lower annual average tempera-ture, the radial growth of L. gmelinii was negatively correlated with the temperature in March. Temporally, the growth-climate relationship for L. gmelinii was unstable. In the area with higher annual average temperature, the positive effects of SPEI and precipitation, as well as the negative effects of temperature in summer on growth significantly enhanced with climate warming. In the area with lower annual average temperature, the negative response of growth to March temperature enhanced more obviously. Such a result indicated that climate change would alter growth-climate relationship, with great spatial variations. Our results suggested that radial growth of L. gmelinii would be limited in the future climate of warm and dry in the Daxing'anling Mountains. The growth of L. gmelinii might obviously decline in south due to summer water deficit and winter drought, and might be inhibited in north because of warm and dry winter.
Age-specific response to climate factors and extreme drought events in radial growth of Picea likiangensis

Abstract:The influence of tree age on the growth response of Picea likiangensis, a predominant timber species in southwestern China, to climatic factors has been under-researched. In this study, we examined the relationships between tree age and the response of P. likiangensis to climatic factors and extreme drought events using tree-ring samples procured from the southeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. The results revealed differential responses of the radial growth of P. likiangensis trees of varying ages to climatic factors and extreme drought events. Specifically, deficient water availability during the early growing season emerged as the principal factor constraining radial growth across all age classes. Young and middle-aged trees (<100 years) demonstrated greater responsiveness to water availability than did mature trees (>100 years). Mature trees, in contrast, demonstrated markedly greater resistance to extreme drought events than young and middle-aged trees. Comparative studies of individual trees across different ages revealed negligible differences in the response of young and middle-aged trees to climatic factors and extreme drought events. Given these responses, future forest management practices should prioritize young and middle-aged trees that are more affected by drought to maximize the ecological value of the species. According to the specific research objectives, sample collection processes should classify mature trees and young and middle-aged trees, to minimize the influence of tree age on the final findings of the study.
Response of tree growth to drought variability in arid areas: Local hydroclimate and large-scale precipitation

Abstract:The impact of drought on terrestrial ecosystems is increasing, and the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of drought changes exacerbates the difficulty of determining ecosystem responses, especially in arid regions far from oceans. Tree rings have been widely used to understand how forest ecosystems respond to drought. However, the link between local hydroclimate variations related to tree rings and large-scale climate changes is not clear in the Qilian Mountains. Here, we used the tree ring width index to analyze the trend of Picea crassifolia growth and its relationship with climate in the middle Qilian Mountains. The results showed that the radial growth trend of Picea crassifolia is synchronized in the middle Qilian Mountains by calculating the Gleichläufigkeit index (GLK). Our analyses indicated that tree radial growth is positively correlated with drought during the growing season. Tree growth responds stably to drought (scPDSI and SPEI) and precipitation but unstably to temperature during 1950-2019. We further traced the meteorological factors that cause regional drought changes associated with radial growth. An increased total precipitation and decreased evaporation contribute to drought alleviation, favoring an increased tree radial growth. The increased total precipitation is mainly due to increased large-scale precipitation, which is related to water vapor transport changes. This study attempts to explore the influence of large-scale meteorology on regional drought change and its related tree radial growth response, which helps us to better understand the changes in forest ecosystems under climate change.

Abstract:The frequency and severity of drought events are increasing under a changing climate, trees of different stand ages respond differently to drought events, which has a great impact on the stability of forest ecosystems. In this study, we measured radial growth (RG) in cored trees from 49 forests including young stands (20–30a) and middle-aged stands (31–50a) of Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica plantations in a semi-arid area of western Liaoning, China. We evaluated the response of RG of P. sylvestris to long-term climate, and calculate three response indicators: resistance (Rt), recovery (Rc) and resilience (Rs), so as to measure the growth response of trees to drought events. Results showed that a negative correlation was detected between RG of young stands and the monthly highest temperature (MHT) in April and May. Positive correlations were found between RG of young stands and the monthly lowest temperature (MLT) across periods from September to November, when RG of young stands was also positively correlated with Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) across whole-years. There was a positive correlation between RG of middle-aged stands and MLT in September, and PDSI from June to December. After the first drought event, most pine trees recovered their RG (Rc > 1, Rs > 1). However, after three consecutive drought events, Rt, Rc, and Rs of pine trees decreased significantly ( p < 0.05), and Rt and Rs were less than 1. In summary, younger pine trees are more sensitive to climate change, and spring drought is more inhibitory to growth of pine trees than high summer temperatures. Pine trees have a compensation effect after experiencing drought events, but the cumulative effect of multiple drought events will gradually offset the compensation effect of trees and eventually decline in pine tree growth, while the resistance and resilience of young stands after continuous drought events were significantly lower than those of middle-aged stands, and have a higher risk of death.

Abstract:The climate in the arid zone in Northwest China has been reported to change from warm-dry to warm-humid during the last half century. Therefore, to investigate the factors affecting tree growth is not only significant in explaining the response of vegetation to climatic changes, but also helpful in the estimation of future climatic changes and vegetation responses. Climate and vegetation both have obvious vertical gradient in the arid region in Northwest China. Dendroecological studies across a vertical gradient will be beneficial to a trustable prediction of climatic changes in the future both temporally and spatially.Tree ring cores of Tianshan spruce (Picea schrenkiana) were sampled from four sites close to the upper distribution belt of forest by thes. Material of other two sites in the interior and at the lower limit of the forest belt were obtained from previous studies. All sites are located on the northern slope of the middle section of the Tianshan Mountains. Spatial and temporal variations of temperature and precipitation along an elevational gradient were comprehensively discussed in this study based on nine vertically distributed meteorological stations. As all the stations were located on the northern slope of the Tianshan Mountains, it is suggested that elevation is the preliminary determinant of temperature and precipitation across meteorological stations as well as sample sites. We use the interpolated climatic data from nine stations to correlate with tree ring width indices. Our study results show that: (1) The elevation with maximum precipitation changes seasonally, making the determinant of tree growth in the study area changes across elevation. The months during which tree growth are sensitive to climatic factors are different due to this seasonal patterns of elevation with maximum precipitation; (2) Except the uppermost site, the others are correlated positively with precipitation during August-September of the preceding year, negatively with mean temperature during July-August of the preceding year, and positively with precipitation during April-May of the current year; (3) At the uppermost site which is close to the alpine timberline, the residual chronology is significantly positively correlated with mean temperature in February and negatively with temperature in May of the current year.It is implied that tree growth in the study area is mainly controlled by drought caused by high temperature during July-August of the preceding year as well as by the lack of water during April-May of the current year. Only close to the climatic timberline the limitation of low temperature on tree growth is significant and the limitation of precipitation is not important. So we can infer the response change of tree ring width as the evidence of confirming climate timberline.

Abstract:Tree radial growth is widely found to respond differently to climate change across altitudinal gradients, but the relative roles of biotic factors (e.g. forest type, height and density) vs. climate gradient remain unclear. We sampled tree rings from 15 plots along a large altitudinal gradient in northeast China, and examined how climate gradient, forest type, height, tree size and density affect: (1) temporal growth variability [mean sensitivity (MS) and standard deviation (SD) of the chronologies], and (2) the relationship of ring width indices (RWI) with historical climate. We used BIC based model selection and variable importance to explore the major drivers of their altitudinal patterns. The results showed that: both growth variability and RWI-climate relationships changed significantly with altitude. Forest height was the most important predictor for altitudinal changes of MS and SD. For RWI-climate relationships, forest type was more important than climate gradient, while height and stem density were weak but necessary predictors. We showed that the altitudinal difference in growth response to climate change cannot be explained by climate gradient alone, and highlight the necessity to examine the influence of biotic factors (which covary with climate across geographic gradient) to better understand forest response to climate change.

Abstract:The impact of climates on the radial growth of muti-species remains insufficiently understood in the climate-sensitive southeastern Tibetan Plateau, and this hampers an effective assessment of forest growth under the background of global warming. Here, we studied the growth–climate relationships of three major species (Abies georgei, Larix potaninii, and Picea likiangensis) on the Baima Snow Mountain (BSM) by using dendrochronology methods. We constructed basal area increment (BAI) residual chronologies based on the dated ring-width measurements and correlated the chronologies with four climate factors. We also calculated the contributions of each climate factor to species growth. We found that photothermal conditions played a more important role than moisture in modulating radial growth, and P. likiangensi presented the strongest sensitivity to climate change among the three species. The growing season (June and July) temperature positively affected the radial growth of three species. Winter (previous December and current January) SD negatively impacted the tree growth of A. georgei and P. likiangensis. Significant correlations between growth and precipitation were detected only in A. georgei (January and May). Warming since the beginning of the 1950s promoted the growth of A. georgei and P. likiangensis, while the same effect on L. potaninii growth was found in the recent 50 years.
