Abstract:The task of CO2 decomposition is one of the components of the problem associated with global warming. One of the promising directions of its solution is the use of low-temperature plasma. For these purposes, different types of discharges are used. Microwave discharge in liquid hydrocarbons has not been studied before for this problem. This paper presents the results of a study of microwave discharge products in liquid Nefras C2 80/120 (petroleum solvent, a mixture of light hydrocarbons with a boiling point from 33 to 205 °C) when CO2 is introduced into the discharge zone, as well as the results of a study of the discharge by optical emission spectroscopy and shadow photography methods. The main gas products are H2, C2H2, C2H4, CH4, CO2, and CO. No oxygen was found in the products. The mechanisms of CO2 decomposition in the discharge are considered. The formation of H2 occurs simultaneously with the decomposition of CO2 in the discharge, with a volumetric rate of up to 475 mL/min and energy consumption of up to 81.4 NL/kWh.

Abstract:Microwave plasma in liquid hydrocarbons is the new area of plasma physics and plasma processing. In this article, we focus on the study of hydrogen production in microwave discharge in water with methane bubbling. This process is similar to so‐called methane steam reforming. The process is studied using gas chromatography and optical emission methods and a specially designed zero‐dimensional self‐consistent model. This model includes the stage of quenching the products of reactions. Mechanisms of main gas products (H2, CO, and CO2) were determined. Gas chromatography was used to study the products of an atmospheric pressure microwave discharge in water with methane bubbling at incident microwave power ranging between 500 and 650 W and methane flow rate ranging between 25 and 75 mL/min. The main components of products are H2, CO, CO2, and CH4. The concentration of H2 reaches 75% with the energy consumption for hydrogen formation of 25 L/kWh. A zero‐dimensional self‐consistent nonstationary discharge model, which takes into account the process of quenching of reaction products, was developed to analyze experimental results and study mechanisms of the formation of hydrogen and carbon oxides. Taking into account the quenching of reaction products is an important and necessary part of modeling discharges in liquids.

Abstract:Thermal cracking of JP-10 (exo-tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene) was investigated in an annular tubular reactor at atmospheric pressure, in the temperature range of 450 similar to 650 degrees C and space time range of 15.44 similar to 4.03 s. In a longer space time, the conversion of thermal decomposition of JP-10 was very sensitive to temperature. The major products Were methane, ethylene, propylene, butylene, butadiene, cyclopentadiene, benzene, toluene, styrene, vinyl-substituted cyclopentene derivatives and C-5/C-6 isomers (pentadiene, methyl-substituted cyclopentene derivatives, cyclohexene, hexadiene and methyl-substituted cyclopentadiene derivatives), and the main primary products were determined to be C-1 similar to C-4 compounds, cyclopentadiene, benzene, toluene and vinyl-substituted cyclopentene derivatives.

Abstract:Using chromatography, the gas composition in a cold plasma jet, which is a flowing afterglow of a microwave glow discharge at atmospheric pressure, is analyzed. The plasma jet is formed by the interaction of the discharge plasma with atmospheric air behind the outlet of the 6-electrode plasma torch, electrical power to which is supplied from the waveguide microwave (2.45 GHz) plasmatron. An analysis of the gas samples of the jet shows that when plasma-forming argon flows through the microwave discharge, hydrogen and methane are formed behind the discharge region, and the concentration of carbon monoxide increases by 5–6 times. The reactive oxygen species in the cold plasma jet is studied using liquid chromatography of an aqueous solution of isopropyl alcohol after treatment with the plasma jet. It is found that because of plasma treatment, partial oxidation of isopropyl alcohol to acetone occurs. This makes it possible to consider acetone as an indicator of reactive oxygen species (hydroxyl radicals, atomic oxygen and ozone) in a cold plasma jet.

Abstract:To get deep understanding of the reaction mechanism of coal pyrolysis in hydrogen plasma, the decomposition reaction pathways of aliphatic hydrocarbons and cycloalkanes, which are two main components in volatiles from coal, were investigated. Methane and cyclohexane were chosen as the model compounds. Density functional theory was employed, and many reaction pathways were involved. Calculations were carried out in Gaussian 09 at the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level of the theory. The results indicate that the main pyrolysis products of methane and cyclohexane in hydrogen plasma are both hydrogen and acetylene, and the participation of active hydrogen atoms makes dehydrogenation reactions more favorable. H2 mainly comes from dehydrogenation process, while many reaction pathways are responsible for acetylene formation. During coal pyrolysis in hydrogen plasma, three main components in volatiles like aliphatic hydrocarbons, cycloalkanes and aromatic hydrocarbons lead to the formation of hydrogen and acetylene, but their contributions to products distribution are different.

Abstract:Conventional fixed-bed reactors have the issue of uneven temperature distribution within the catalyst bed, which influences product selectivity and catalyst stability. Microwave irradiation can realize uniform and bulk heating due to its unique penetration capability. Here, a microwave fixed-bed reactor was developed and applied in a gas-phase glycerol dehydration reaction. Nine microwave-absorbing binary metal oxide catalysts were used to verify the versatility of microwave reactors in gas-solid reactions. Compared with an electric-heating reactor, much better catalyst stability was obtained in a microwave reactor for all of the catalysts. Moreover, no obvious change in catalyst stability was observed with increasing reactor size. Numerical simulation was adopted to explore the intensification mechanism of microwave heating. The largest temperature difference in the microwave reactor was around 10 degrees C, much smaller than that in the electric-heating reactor which reached 57 degrees C. The electric field distribution within the penetration depth of microwave irradiation was homogeneous, resulting in uniform temperature distribution in the microwave reactor and hence good catalyst stability.

Abstract:In this study, we examined non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma processes operating under varying conditions using different liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon materials. The light emission from the discharges were analyzed through optical emission spectroscopy to comprehend the products generated in different parameter space. The gaseous products from each of these analyses were also collected and analyzed through gas chromatography. Analysis of the optical emission from the discharge and concentration of the gaseous products show a linear trend between emission intensity ratio Hα/C2 and gas concentration ratio H2/C2Hx. Gas temperature and electronic excitation temperature of different experimental conditions were also compared and indicates that spark discharge relates to higher electronic excitation temperature compared to glow discharge of similar medium. Higher electronic excitation temperature leads to generation of different products from spark discharge compared to glow discharge. Glow discharge generates more of the intermediate products. Whereas spark discharge, because of its higher electronic excitation temperature, leads to higher rate of dissociation and therefore generates more of the dissociated products. Glow discharge, for example generates more of OH and H from the moisture present in the carrier gas as impurity, whereas spark discharge would generate more of Hα and O particles further breaking down the OH bonds. Finally, UV-Vis analysis was performed on the liquid products of the discharge and reveals that the photo-centers and the newly generated soot nano particles absorb the UV range lights and some of the visible range light emission mostly up to ~600nm.

Abstract:The spontaneous boiling-up kinetics of liquid alkanes (methane, ethane, and propane) saturated with one of the following gases: helium, hydrogen, nitrogen, or methane is studied. The solution nucleation rate temperature, baric, and concentration dependences in the interval (10 4 –10 8 ) m –3 s –1 are determined using the mean lifetime method. The measurements were carried out at pressures of 1–2 MPa and volatile component concentrations up to 6 mol %. The experimental results are compared with the classical nucleation theory in a macroscopic approximation. In contrast to pure liquid and liquid saturated with helium or hydrogen, the attainable superheating temperatures of solutions containing nitrogen or methane as a dissolved substance exceed their theoretically predicted values. The factors causing this mismatch are discussed.

Abstract:Propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG) are common ingredients used in the preparation of various products, and notably in e-cigarette liquids. In this work, we investigated the generation of light gases from the pyrolysis of PG, VG and their mixtures. ReaxFF-MD was used to study the elementary reactions involved in the pyrolysis of PG/VG mixtures of 50/50 and 30/70 percent by volume. Main reactions included dehydration, dehydrogenation and C-C bond cleavage. In addition, we focused on the elementary reactions that form the light gases: C2 hydrocarbons, CO, CO2, and H2. Kinetic rates of PG and VG decomposition, and the Arrhenius parameters, were calculated, with errors as low as 1% with respect to pure PG and VG kinetic rate constants. Furthermore, experimental results were obtained by conducting pyrolysis experiments on PG, VG and their mixtures, in a continuous flow tube reactor at reaction temperatures ranging between 550°C and 850°C. The main gas products were predominantly CO, CH4, C2H4, in addition to C2H6, C2H2, H2, and CO2. Gas product concentrations increased with temperature except for ethane, which underwent further decomposition, as expected from the elementary reactions. Liquid mixtures proved to produce more products due to reactions taking place between the different pyrolysis products obtained from PG and VG, as shown by ReaxFF-MD simulations.

Abstract:A microwave discharge in high-velocity (150–250 m/s) air flows induced on a half-wave vibrator is studied. A cw magnetron microwave generator with a frequency of 2.45 GHz and an output power of up to 5 kW was used for initiation of the microwave discharge. The high-speed video imaging was used for studying the discharge structure, determining the diameter and length of the plasma channel as a function of flow velocity and pressure. Electron concentration and temperature, along with characteristic gas temperature, were determined based on the optical spectra. The possibility of using this microwave discharge for ignition of hydrocarbon–air mixtures in combustion chambers of ramjet engines is proved experimentally.

Abstract:To study the combustion process of fuel in the microwave plasma torch, we designed a butane microwave plasma device exploiting a tungsten rod as an electrode. Through analysis of the image record by high-speed camera, we found that the discharge of butane microwave plasma torch is a cyclic process at atmospheric pressure at a frequency of around 100 Hz. During the discharge, the active particles continuously diffuse from the electrode to the outside like the bloom of the flower. Then, the variation of plasma torch of jet height and temperature with microwave power is obtained. In addition, we studied the effects of different butane flow rates on the plasma torch. The results illustrate that excessive butane will lead to carbon deposition on the electrode. All in all, this work provides a new understanding of the combustion of the microwave plasma torch, which is conducive to the further development of microwave plasma in the fields of waste gas treatment, fuel combustion, and plasma engine.
Gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric study of the oil fractions produced by microwave-assisted pyrolysis of different sewage sludges

Abstract:The pyrolysis of sewage sludge was studied in a microwave oven using graphite as microwave absorber. The pyrolysis temperature ranged from 800 to 1000 degrees C depending on the type of sewage sludge. A conventional electrical furnace was also employed in order to compare the results obtained with both methods. The pyrolysis oils were trapped in a series of condensers and their characteristics such as elemental analysis and calorific value were determined and compared with those of the initial sludge. The oil composition was analyzed by GC-MS. The oils from the microwave oven had n-alkanes and 1-alkenes, aromatic compounds, ranging from benzene derivatives to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), nitrogenated compounds, long chain aliphatic carboxylic acids, ketones and esters and also monoterpenes and steroids. The oil from the electric oven was composed basically of PAHs such as naphthalene, acenapthylene, phenanthrene, fluoranthene, benzo[a]anthracene, benzofluoranthenes, benzopyrenes, indenepyrene, benzo[ghi]perylene, and anthanthrene. In contrast, these compounds were not produced in the case of microwave-assisted pyrolysis.
Mechanisms of Gas Temperature Variation of the Atmospheric Microwave Plasma Torch

Abstract:The gas temperature is a key parameter that affects the process of microwave plasma chemistry in industrial applications. Based on the molecular emission spectrometry of the A2Σ+→X2Πr electronic system of OH radicals, the gas temperature of the atmospheric air microwave plasma core at different absorbed microwave power levels, gas flow rates, gas humidities, and volume fractions of CO2 in air was analyzed. In the experiment, the absorbed microwave power, gas flow rate, gas humidity, and volume ratio of CO2 in air was varied from 560 to 1750 W, 10 to 24 l min−1, 30% to 95%, and 0% to 40%, respectively. Moreover, the axial gas temperature distribution of the plasma torch was measured. The experimental results showed that (i) the plasma gas temperature mainly ranged from 4000 to 7000 K, (ii) the plasma gas temperature rose with increasing absorbed microwave power but was hardly affected by the feeding gas flow rate, (iii) the plasma gas temperature decreased by ∼400 K for every 20% increase in the fraction of CO2 in air and decreased with increasing gas humidity, and (iv) the plasma torch gas temperature decreased along the axial direction. Due to the lack of a prevailing microwave discharge theory, an in-depth analysis of the mechanisms of gas temperature variation was performed based on the heat balance equation.

Abstract:Pyrolysis experiments of typical C8 hydrocarbons, including the straight-chain, branched-chain, cyclic and aromatics structure ones, were carried out using a jet-stirred reactor (JSR) at 1 atm and temperature from 873 K from 1173 K for residence time from 0.2 s to 2.0 s. To assess the carbon number effect, studies were also conducted on two C16 alkanes. The mole fractions of light gases, including H-2, main C1-C3 alkanes and C2-C4 alkenes in the pyrolysis product, were measured by a gas chromatography (GC). Thereafter, carbon conversion to C1-C4 light gas was determined. Meanwhile, corresponding kinetic modeling was conducted using perfectly stirred reactor (PSR) module in CHEMKIN-PRO. The results revealed that molecule structure has a great impact on not only the overall carbon conversion, but also the components and the individual yields of the main light gases. Non-monotonic variation trend of the yield of some C3-C4 products with pyrolysis temperature and residence time were found. Most light gases are produced within 0.5 s, and the yield is much higher for alkanes. With further increasing of residence time or at high temperatures, different from that of the other C8 hydrocarbons, the amount of C1-C4 pyrolysis products for iso-octane decreases. The mechanisms of the structure effect on the pyrolysis products were also assessed by the reaction path analysis.

Abstract:The oxidation of C 2 –C 4 olefins in a dielectric barrier discharge in the presence of water with the formation of oxygen-containing compounds and various C 1 –C 5+ hydrocarbons with saturated and unsaturated structures has been studied. It has been established that the direction of the reaction is influenced by the molecular weight and structure of the starting olefin. In the series ethylene–propylene–butylene, the concentration of oxygen-containing compounds increased from 28.1 to 74.3 and 66.7 wt %, respectively. The oxidation of isobutene predominantly produced isobutyraldehyde and acetone with concentrations of 53 and 21 wt %, respectively, and 2-butanol (to 26 wt %) was the main product in the oxidation of 1-butene and 2‐butene.

Abstract:This is an experimental study on effectively decomposing volatile organic waste by atmospheric-pressure microwave plasma. P-Xylene (PX) was used as a sample agent in the experiment because it is the main volatile organic compound (VOC) exhaust waste produced in many chemical industries and difficult to eliminate completely. We developed a microwave plasma apparatus 1 which was designed for research on characteristic of atmospheric plasma and material treatment 2 . The microwave plasma could be easily generated and be stably existing at the microwave frequency of 2.45GHz, and the power of 2–2.5 kW in the air. 2–4 lpm nitrogen as the carrier gas conducted p-Xylene into the air plasma zone to react. The GC analysis presented that the microwave plasma could eliminate p-Xylene efficiently at the destruction rate over 98%. And optical emission spectroscopy was also studied for research of reaction process. NO 2 , the main by-product which was produced by recombination of N2 and O 2 at a high temperature, could be eliminated completely by passing the Exhaust gas into the alkaline solution. Due to its high efficiency, microwave plasma could be an advantageous option in VOC decomposing in PX industry.

Abstract:This study characterized chemicals released into a chamber in the process of cooking microwave popcorn. Seventeen types of microwave popcorn from eight different brands were studied. The work proceeded in two phases: phase one investigated chemicals emitted during popping and opening, phase two investigated chemicals emitted at discrete intervals from 0-40 minutes post-pop opening. The research was performed using a microwave oven enclosed in a chamber with ports for air sampling of particulate matter (PM) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs in the air samples were identified and quantified using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). PM was characterized using both an aerodynamic particle sizer (APS) and a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) to cover a full range of emitted sizes. The compounds measured during popping and opening included butter flavoring components such as diacetyl, butyric acid, acetoin, propylene glycol, 2-nonanone, and triacetin and bag components such as p-xylene and perfluorinated alcohol 8:2 telomer. The greatest chemical quantity is emitted when the bag is opened post-popping; more than 80% of the total chemical emissions occur at this time.
Microwave Plasma Conversion of Volatile Organic Compounds

Abstract:A microwave-induced, steam/Ar/O2, plasma "torch" was operated at atmospheric pressure to determine the feasibility of destroying volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of concern. The plasma process can be coupled with adsorbent technology by providing steam as the fluid carrier for desorbing the VOCs from an adsorbent. Hence, N2 can be excluded by using a relatively inexpensive carrier gas, and thermal formation of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) is avoided in the plasma. The objectives of the study were to evaluate the technical feasibility of destroying VOCs from gas streams by using a commercially available microwave plasma torch and to examine whether significant byproducts were produced. Trichloroethene (TCE) and toluene (TOL) were added as representative VOCs of interest to a flow that contained Ar as a carrier gas in addition to O2 and steam. The O2 was necessary to ensure that undesirable byproducts were not formed in the process. Microwave power applied at 500-600 W was found to be sufficient to achieve the destruction of the test compounds, down to the detection limits of the gas chromatograph that was used in the analysis. Samples of the postmicrowave gases were collected on sorbent tubes for the analysis of dioxins and other byproducts. No hazardous byproducts were detected when sufficient O2 was added to the flow. The destruction efficiency at a fixed microwave power improved with the addition of steam to the flow that passed through the torch.

Photolysis of Trace Volatile Organic Compound by Microwave Discharge Electrodeless Lamps-I2

Abstract:The dynamic photolysis of volatile organic compounds by microwave discharge electrodeless lamp-I2(MDEL-I2) was performed in a lab scale apparatus with butyl acetate as targets object.The effect of input power,initial butyl acetate concentration and gas retention on photolysis efficiency was investigated.The results showed that the photolysis was increased with increasing the input power and gas retention time,while the influence of initial butyl acetate concentration was negligible with in the range of research.Under the conditions of input power 200 W,gas flow velocity 0.025 m/s(gas residence time 13.32 s)and the initial butyl acetate concentration 1.500 mg/m3,the photolysis efficiency could achieve above 78%.At the low initial concentration,gas residence time was the key factor influence the butyl acetate degradation.
Direct Decomposition of No Activated by Microwave Discharge

Abstract:The environmentally friendly removal of NO has been investigated using continuous microwave discharge (CMD) at atmospheric pressure. In these experiments, conversions of NO to N-2 as well as NO2 were mainly observed for both dry and wet feed gas, which showed a great difference from those observed with other discharge methods. The effects of a series of reaction parameters, including microwave input power, O-2 concentration, NO concentration, and gas flow rate, on the product distribution and energy efficiency were also studied. Under all reaction conditions, the conversions of NO to N-2 were higher than those to NO2. The highest conversion of NO to N-2 was 88%. The reaction rate of NO removal and the effects of the different discharge modes on NO conversion and product distribution are also discussed. Through comparison of the results of different discharge modes, it was found that the addition of CH4 apparently increased the conversion of NO to N-2 as well as the energy efficiency. A possible reaction process is suggested.
