Abstract:Exploring the shear behavior of the bolt-grout interface is crucial to the reinforcement of the rock mass in many geotechnical engineering applications, yet few studies have been carried out using realistic 3D bolt profiles under different boundary conditions. Here we systematically investigate the impacts of normal stress, normal stiffness, and initial normal stress on the shear behavior and failure characteristics of two types of interfaces with realistic bolt profiles. A novel technique combining laser scanning and a 3D printing method is used to manufacture realistic bolt surface profiles. Our results show that the interface shear behavior depends on the bolt profile and the applied boundary condition. Specifically, as the initial normal stress increases, the peak shear stress increases. Bolt B2 with a larger rib angle shows good shear behavior at low initial normal stresses, while bolt B1 offers higher shear stress at high initial normal stress with a larger rib spacing. The influence of normal stiffness on peak shear stress exhibits no general trends due to the small changes in normal stress before the peak stage. Increasing the initial normal stress or normal stiffness can increase the residual shear stress but decrease the dilation of the interface. In addition, different shear failure modes are observed, which mainly depend on the boundary stress conditions. Generally, sheared-off failure gradually becomes dominant with increasing boundary stress or normal stiffness. Both acoustic emission activation and energy release can be used to describe failure processes with different failure modes.
