Abstract:This article examines the technologies of nationalism that shape how the Korean War is depicted in two museum and memorial sites: The Price of Freedom: Americans at War, a permanent exhibit at the National Museum of American History in Washington, DC, and the War Memorial of Korea in Seoul. It shows how the use of traditional historical artifacts in The Price of Freedom and cinematic and digital technologies in the War Memorial generate structures of cultural memory that celebrate both a nationalist militarism and the ethos of neoliberalism.

Abstract:The Korean War had no official ending and has continued in a form of Cold War since 1953, the year the cease-fire agreement was signed, and yet, during the past five decades, it appears to have faded from South Korean memory. Anti-communism became a national ideology in post-war South Korea. For a country that was endeavoring to establish a national identity that differs from communist North Korea, the establishment of an anti-communist state was inevitable. However, the collapse of the Communist Bloc and a humanitarian crisis in North Korea in the 1990s led to attitudinal changes in the South Korean public toward North Korea. The forgetting and remembering of North Korea in conjunction with the memory of the Korean War has left the South Korean people ambivalent toward North Koreans. This paper explores social encounters between North and South Koreans in the late 2000s in Seoul that illustrate the uneasy interactions that stem from past anti-communist education as well as the subsequent erasure of social memory about North Korea as part of Korean culture. Abstract:Memory Studies, Ahead of Print. Focusing on the idea of home, this article investigates collective memory embodied in the War and Women's Human Rights Museum in Seoul, South Korea. Centering 'comfort women's' trauma and resistance, it analyzes the museum's memory narrative and spatial strategy, which guide visitors through an empathic journey from past to present, memory to action. I first define the museum's site-specificity, examining how the idea of home emerged from its construction history. Thereafter, I analyze the museum's spatial paradigm of collective memorialization through the lens of Gaston Bachelard's interpretation of a house. Exploring visitors' spatial awareness of 'comfort woman' victims, I argue that the museum, combining a metaphor of home with the victims' memory, builds a strong emotional connection to the victims and thereby encourages visitors to act on their behalf.

Abstract:The Korean War is paradoxically remembered in the United States as "The Forgotten War." While there are many reasons for this amnesia, the war's representation in American popular culture, and cinema in particular, remains a key factor. Looking beyond the narrow canon of Korean War film "classics," this article surveys a broad spectrum of American-produced Korean War films made since 1951 in terms of their capacity (or rather incapacity) to serve as adequate means of Korean War remembrance. Building on memory studies scholar Astrid Erll's theory of media and cultural memory, the article proposes a typology of the kinds of (non-)memory work done by American Korean War films, with a specific focus on common narrative strategies that not only hinder remembrance but facilitate forgetting. These include the frequent subordination of the war to background or other ancillary roles, overly generic and nonspecific treatments of the war, and the tendency to conflate Korea with WWII. The article frames the mnemonic implications of these narrative strategies in terms of the compromised memory potentials they generate, including "peripheral memory," "vague memory," and "parasitic memory."

Abstract:Purpose: This article is to explore to understand the realistic background of the territorial conflicts, it has limitations in the understanding and resolution of the territorial conflicts at a more fundamental level regarding the humanities approach. In this respect, it is important to analyze the unresolved territorial conflicts based on the literary view from a humanistic approach based on a political and cultural perspective rather than a confrontation based on the logic of power. Method: The humanities approach is especially literature, contains the conflict generation and resolution process at the human level. The literary works representing each country, especially novels and tales, uniquely demonstrate the origin and development of the conflicts through their own plots. Based on which, it will be possible to understand how the territorial disputes will develop by country at the cultural level. Results: This article has not suggested a fundamental resolution for the territorial conflicts of Northeast Asia, and especially the historical issues of Dokdo between South Korea and Japan. However, it is important to take a humanistic approach focusing on the literary works as ideological, economic, cultural, and nationalist conflicts. This is because the memory of intersecting harms and damages as ideological, economic, cultural, and nationalistic confrontations are repeated with a focus on the Korean Peninsula and Manchuria are the factors that continue the conflict. Conclusion: As the historical contexts are different, the cultural and psychological tendencies are also unique, and the territorial disputes develop through the combination of such factors. In order to analyze the collective psychology and conflict of the South Koreans who experienced the loss of sovereignty and division due to Japan’s forced annexation, and the territorial and historical issues surrounding the Island of Dokdo, which has been an obstacle to the normalization of the South Korea-Japan relations to this day, the culture of the time literature works dealing with modern and contemporary history that reflect the culture and language have been considered.

Abstract:Chinese and Korean protests over “revisionist” Japanese histories of World War II are well known. The impact of contested Chinese and US histories of the Korean War on US-China relations today has received less attention. More broadly, there has been little research seeking to systematically explore just how history textbook controversies matter for international relations. This article experimentally manipulates the impact of nation (US/China), of source (in-group/out-group textbooks), and of valence (positive/negative historical narratives) on measures of beliefs about the past, emotions, collective self-esteem, and threat perception in present-day US-China relations. A 2 × 2 × 2 design exposed randomized groups of Chinese and US university students to fictional high school history textbook accounts of the Korean War. Findings reveal significant effects of nation, source, and valence and suggest that the “historical relevance” of a shared past to national identities in the present has a dramatic impact on how historical controversies affect threat perception.

Abstract:This handbook explores a diverse range of artistic and cultural responses to modern conflict, from Mons in the First World War to Kabul in the twenty-first century. With over thirty chapters from an international range of contributors, ranging from the UK to the US and Australia, and working across history, art, literature, and media, it offers a significant interdisciplinary contribution to the study of modern war, and our artistic and cultural responses to it. The handbook is divided into three parts. The first part explores how communities and individuals responded to loss and grief by using art and culture to assimilate the experience as an act of survival and resilience. The second part explores how conflict exerts a powerful influence on the expression and formation of both individual, group, racial, cultural and national identities and the role played by art, literature, and education in this process. The third part moves beyond the actual experience of conflict and its connection with issues of identity to explore how individuals and society have made use of art and culture to commemorate the war. In this way, it offers a unique breadth of vision and perspective, to explore how conflicts have been both represented and remembered since the early twentieth century.
Interpreting Conflicts and Conflicts in Interpreting: A Micro-Historical Account of the Interpreting Activity in the Korean Armistice Negotiations

Abstract:The Korean Armistice Negotiations are among the major historical events shaping geopolitical situations in East Asia after World War II. While previous studies of the negotiations followed mainly the approach of traditional historical research, the present study offers a new perspective of the ‘neglected’ participants – the interpreters who worked for the series of negotiations. An analysis of “post-hoc accounts” of interpreters, using a micro-historical approach, demonstrates complexity of interpreting for wartime negotiations and reveals various conflicts in the interpreting of armistice negotiations as perceived by the interpreters. Intense conflicts were found in the interpreting activity, including: conflicts between the interpreters on both sides of the negotiations, hidden conflicts between the interpreters and their principals, conflicts between different interpreter roles, conflicts over language use between the two sides of the negotiations, and conflicts arising from misconceptions of the interpreting activity. It was also discovered that the interpreters in the armistice negotiations were generally loyal as the army soldiers instead of maintaining a neutral stance, such as is expected from professional interpreters nowadays. The micro-historical study of the interpreters’ accounts of the major historical events can be useful in exploring and explaining what is hidden behind the complexity of conflicts, thus offering a new approach to interpreting studies as well as to historical studies.

Abstract:This study attempts to examine the reality of the Korean War Appearing in the Daejeon region based on the oral experiences of the generation that experienced the Korean War. In particular, by paying attention to 'Golryeonggol-valley' in the Daejeon region, through the meaning and imaginative geographies contained in a specific place that is narrated and reproduced through memory, this study explores the necessity and possibilities of Korean War topographic maps. Common elements of war experience stories that appear in oral narratives are as follows: 1) While you were studying, eating, or working at school, you suddenly heard that there was a war and that you had to evacuate, and you had to evacuate. 2) The North Korean People's Army that came first was not bad, and actually did well for the civilians. 3) Later, the North Korean People's Army ordered people to cook in private homes and plundered all household items and food, including all kinds of food and livestock. 4) That the North Korean People's Army brutally massacred soldiers' families, police families, village heads, district heads, etc. 5) Like farmhand laborers, people who suffered sadness in the neighborhood, walked around wearing red armbands, tyrannized the people in the neighborhood by telling them who in the neighborhood were family members of soldiers or police officers, or who served as village heads or district heads. 6) In Daejeon, they heard that the military and police killed many civilians. In particular, the well massacre of Daejeon Prison and the civilian massacre of Golryeonggol-valley (Sannae) related to the Bodo League are mentioned most heavily. The Korean War is not the same in all regions. Not describing the war situation uniformly can be said to be an effective approach in that it does not 'only' attribute the war to a single event. That is the reason the works of 'recording' the stories of people who directly experienced the Korean War through oral records, and reproducing and talking about the 'truth' of it through literary imagination are more necessary.

Abstract:This study explores controversies surrounding the application of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) policies to Korean traditional dance. In grappling with the emergent debates about ICH, I focus on how Korean dancers conceive of their own practices. Informed by the perspectives of practitioners, I argue that conflicts surrounding the Korean ICH system stem from the contrasting legal frameworks of collective ownership and intellectual property rights. The tensions within the ICH framework put Korean traditional dance professionals in the challenging role of negotiating between cultural preservation and artistic innovation.

Abstract:This study aims at the differences and changes in the ways of remembering the Korean War by comparatively analyzing the commemorative songs of South Korea, North Korea, and China. A common feature of memorial songs of South Korea, North Korea, and China is that each of them regards the Korean War as a triumph. Each country commemorates the war on different days with different meanings and remembers the unfinished war as a victory. The words ‘Korean War’ and ‘victory’ are stigma not forgotten in South Korea. They are political capital that can rally and persuade the people in North Korea and China. Meanwhile, in South Korea the song “Song of 6.25” became 'political capital' in the struggle for leadership in political or ideological struggles.

Abstract:Euro-American exclusivity has mostly been responsible for eclipsing the universalizing appeal of trauma studies. In a bid to cater for trauma accounts of the Global South, the present study attempts to look into the trauma of people living in Kashmir, a conflict zone in the middle of the third-world Asian countries. Kashmir is one of the disputed regions and a center point of conflict between India and Pakistan since the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947. The political turbulence as well as the resulting militarization has rendered the entire Kashmiri community listless and prone to traumatic experiences. Despite the serious nature of the traumatic experiences of the people living in Kashmir, and as depicted in the literature produced therein, little scholarly attention has been given to it to voice out these accounts, which are necessary for claiming the truthful depiction of the Kashmiris. This article uses Jeffery C. Alexander et al.’s Cultural Trauma and Collective Identity and Kai. T. Erikson’s Collective Trauma as the theoretical framework to analyze the selected Kashmiri Anglophone literary text titled The Collaborator by Mirza Waheed. The study finds that the traumatic memories of Kashmiri people, as a community, are no different from the likewise traumatized people of the Global North. Here, the Kashmiri narrative takes the responsibility of presenting the reality of life. The investigation concludes that fictional narratives, through memory of the past, bring a compelling tale of eternal suffering, establishing the fact that it is not the individual that must bear the moral responsibility; rather, it should be the collective.

Abstract:Japan conscripted a disputed number of "comfort women" to sexually service their soldiers in occupied territories during World War II. In the aftermath of war, this apparatus was ignored by international diplomacy, and few survivors related their experiences as sex slaves. However, during the early 1990s, sexual crimes against women achieved international attention, emboldened by and emboldening silence breakers whose personal experiences were both affirmed and negated by competing global stakeholders. Activists seeking recognition of and reparations for crimes against survivors of Japan's comfort women system have since deployed memorials to contest Japan's position that comfort women were sex workers. These memorials materially instantiate the conflicted interpretations of the scope and severity of Japan's war crimes, whose undecidability signifies ruptures in the contemporary symbolic order of the United States, Japan, and South Korea alliance. This project examines how online audiences construct the meanings of the highly contested 2017 San Francisco memorial.
How History Wars Shape Foreign Policy: An Ancient Kingdom and the Future of China–South Korea Relations

Abstract:Abstract Do history wars shape international affairs? If so, how and for whom? Taking the historical dispute between China and South Korea over the ancient Gaogouli/Goguryeo Kingdom as a case study, this article explores the individual-level psychological micro-foundations of history wars. A 2020 survey experiment in South Korea pit “ours” vs “theirs” Goguryeo imitation Wikipedia entries to explore their downstream consequences. It revealed direct, indirect, and conditional effects. Exposure to China's claim to the Kingdom undermined Korean pride, increasing dislike of China, and lessening desires to cooperate with it. Pre-existing levels of nationalism divided South Koreans in how angry they became after exposure the Wikipedia primes. That anger, however, only shaped the China policy preferences of those South Koreans who viewed the balance of military power with China favorably. Implications for ownership disputes over kimchi and other national possessions are also discussed, as are the implications of history wars for war and peace in twenty-first-century East Asia.

Abstract:The Korean War composed an important part of the history of the new China after its establishment. After the opening and the reform phase, a number of documentaries on the Korean War were produced in China, based on footages and video images filmed earlier. Documentaries produced during this time linked newly discovered information based on the video images with the existing information, and therefore they analyzed and explained issues related to the war in detail. Certain documentaries reinterpreted issues related to the war based on the existing video images by adding the analysis of a researcher on the topic, and others included reenactments and reproductions of the war based on the memories of survivors. Likewise, documentaries about the Korean War that have been produced after the war can be seen as results of the reflection on or reinterpretation of the Korean War. Compared to the documentaries made in the initial phase, these documentaries contained noticeably less political and ideological colors, and focused more on factors for logical and critical thinking. As a result, the documentaries made people reconsider the nature of the war, including the cause of the war and which side actually started the war, and distinctly transformed the perspectives on these issues.

Abstract:Globalization and increased migration have brought both new opportunities and new tensions to traditional East Asian societies. Multicultural Challenges and Redefining Identity in East Asia draws together a wide range of distinguished local scholars to discuss multiculturalism and the changing nature of social identity in East Asia. Regional specialists review specific events and situations in China, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines to provide a focus on life as it is lived at the local level whilst also tracing macro discourses on the national issues affected by multiculturalism and identity. The contributors look at the uneven multicultural development across these different countries and how to bridge the gap between locality and universality. They examine how ethnic majorities and minorities can achieve individual rights, exert civic responsibility, and explain how to construct a deliberative framework to make sustainable democracy possible. This book considers the emergence of a new cross-national network designed to address multicultural challenges and imagines an East Asian community with shared values of individual dignity and multicultural diversity. With strong empirical support it puts forward a regulative ideal by which a new paradigm for multicultural coexistence and regional cooperation can be realized.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the study of the peculiarities of the collective memory of Russian Koreans about the deportation of 1937. The author’s goal is a meaningful analysis of the semantic and sociopsychological aspects of the memory of deportation among different generations of Koreans, the nature of their experience of historical events, the degree of reflection, as well as the influence of memory on their social well-being and definition of identity. The methodological basis of the research is the theory of cultural trauma of Alexander, the conception of collective memory of Eyerman, the historical memory of Assman, and the structure of ethnic identity of Shnirelman. The method of empirical research is an in-depth biographical interview. Results: features of the collective memory of Russian Koreans were revealed; semantic aspects of the memory of deportation among different generations of Koreans are highlighted: the trauma of a lack of freedom; loss of identity; the decapitalization of the ancestral experience; a tendency towards conformism and loyalty to the current government; avoidance of critical assessments of deportation and its consequences. The necessity of a comprehensive study of social and cultural trauma by the Korean community is substantiated. The article is based on field materials — interviews with representatives of three generations of Russian Koreans, conducted by the author in 2020 in Yekaterinburg.
