Abstract:Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is an active sensor. All weather, day and night observation capability of SAR made it special as compared to the passive sensors. This study proposed a methodology for marine vessel detection based on degree of polarization (DOP). It is a function of surface roughness and incident angle. The large dynamic range, DOP signature and substructure of ship help to distinguish it from ocean. DOP is used to optimize transmitted polarization mode that is generated by the multiplication of transmitted Stokes vector and Kennaugh matrix. The proposed methodology and an analysis of the same on different data sets is presented in this paper. This analysis leads us to understand the mode of polarization and range of orientation and ellipticity in polarization ellipse for better distinguishing vessels and non-vessel-targets. The methodology presented here identifies why DOP will not be able to detect some of the vessel’s targets and it counts and marks the centroid of detected vessels. Images acquired by two different spaceborne sensors, Radarsat-2 (C-band) and ALOS-1 (L-band) in descending and ascending passes, respectively, are used in this study. Detection accuracy of full polarization for the images used in this study is 85%, 91% in RS2, ALOS1 with false alarm of 0 and 3, respectively, which is much better than other polarization modes. The results show significant improvement in vessel-detection performance of the methodology compared to other state-of-the-art techniques for the same application.
