Abstract:In two experiments (total N=693) we explored whether people are willing to consider paintings made by AI-driven robots as art, and robots as artists. Across the two experiments, we manipulated three factors: (i) agent type (AI-driven robot v. human agent), (ii) behavior type (intentional creation of a painting v. accidental creation), and (iii) object type (abstract v. representational painting). We found that people judge robot paintings and human painting as art to roughly the same extent. However, people are much less willing to consider robots as artists than humans, which is partially explained by the fact that they are less disposed to attribute artistic intentions to robots.

Abstract:This paper presents a study analyzing the perception of artistic products created by or with the support of artificial intelligence (AI). The research builds on previous studies revealing that the output of artificial creativity processes can indeed rival human‐made products, satisfy consumer expectations, and derive enjoyment. However, in contrast to earlier works, the study focuses on the awareness of how AI is used during production processes (full automation, human‐AI co‐creation, and solely human) and product types (levels of involvement and product tangibility). A laboratory experiment was conducted to compare the value and creativity perceptions of 199 participants. Results revealed that, overall, the use of AI enhanced perceptions of process novelty. Additionally, the use of AI led to more positive evaluations of intangible and high involvement products such as songs compared to tangible and high involvement products such as paintings. This shows a decrease in perceived quality as more AI is involved in the production process. Furthermore, the level of product involvement level indicated no causal relationship to the degree of AI used in the production process.

Abstract:International Journal of Cultural Studies, Ahead of Print. Artificial intelligence (AI) can create works deceptively resembling paintings, graphics, or photographs. This article examines how to treat these works, and under what circumstances, if any, they should be understood as art. The focus is placed on the work itself in the l'art-pour-l'art-tradition, on the reception, on the skills involved in the creation, and on the authors themselves. Besides looking at literary sources touching on the aforementioned aspects, the evaluation considers the perspective of people with an affinity for art through in-depth interviews. Most interviewees revised their initial reaction after learning that the works were AI generated, being more skeptical about their status as art. It then becomes obvious that the role of the artist is undergoing change. The confrontation with the artificial brings the human creator into the foreground and makes them inseparable from the work. The new technical-cultural situation leads to a new, more contextual evaluation of art.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are quickly transforming the traditional fields of fine arts and raise questions of AI challenging human creativity. AI tools can be used in creative processes and analysis of fine art, such as painting, music, and literature. They also have potential in enhancing artistic events, installations, and performances. In this systematic review, we investigated empirical studies on the use of AI in fine arts We gathered the data from three major bibliographic databases. After an initial search, we screened 723 articles based on pre-established inclusion criteria, resulting in 44 studies. Over half concerned visual arts, such as paintings and drawings, and one quarter concerned music. Experimental studies focused on human responses to AI art showed that people generally do not recognize the difference between human-made and AI-made art, but human-made art was valued more than AI-made art in some studies. The power of AI lies in the analysis of large-scale datasets. Case studies have reported development of an AI painter, DJ, performance artist, and music accompaniment for improvisations. AI tools have been applied to enhance consumer experience in online art shops and to provide virtual reality (VR) access to historical cathedrals. Fast development of AI will likely pose a challenge for the current concept and understanding of fine arts. AI challenging human creativity is one of the most powerful signs of the cultural and societal transformation stemming from AI.

Abstract:This essay discusses whether computers, using Artificial Intelligence (AI), could create art. First, the history of technologies that automated aspects of art is surveyed, including photography and animation. In each case, there were initial fears and denial of the technology, followed by a blossoming of new creative and professional opportunities for artists. The current hype and reality of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools for art making is then discussed, together with predictions about how AI tools will be used. It is then speculated about whether it could ever happen that AI systems could be credited with authorship of artwork. It is theorized that art is something created by social agents, and so computers cannot be credited with authorship of art in our current understanding. A few ways that this could change are also hypothesized.

Abstract:Artistic creation has traditionally been thought to be a uniquely human ability. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), however, have enabled algorithms to create art that is nearly indistinguishable from human artwork. Existing research suggests that people have a bias against AI artwork but cannot accurately identify it in blind comparisons. The current study extends this investigation to examine the aesthetic judgment factors differentiating human and machine art. Results indicate that people are unable to accurately identify artwork source but prefer human art and experience more positive emotions in response to human artwork. The aesthetic judgment factors differentiating human- and machine-generated art were all related to positive emotionality. This finding has several implications for this research area and limitation and avenues for future research are discussed.

Abstract:The article analyzes the use of artificial intelligence in various types of digital art at the current level of their development and outlines the possibilities of external ways of such interaction. The author considers specific artistic examples, which see that the use of artificial intelligence in art develops a complex art history and philo-sophical questions: what is art? how does computer technology change aesthetics? where is the line between technology and creativity? who is considered the author of the work generated by neuronets? is it possible to compare anthropocentric and non-anthropocentric forms of creativity? etc. The researcher demonstrates different approaches to the chosen topic, citing antagonistic points of view of scientists. Some of them believe that art with the help of a computer is the next step in the development of avant-garde trends, while others see these trends as the degradation and even the death of art. In digital painting, we are already faced with the use of works (the most famous example is the android-artist Ai-Da) who know how to draw in different techniques and with the use of different tools. The victory of a painting generated by a neural network at an art competition raised questions about its au-thorship and the admissibility of participation of such works in competitions for art-ists. Discussions on the ArtStation platform indicate that many artists do not per-ceive works made with the help of artificial intelligence as "real" works of art. In mu-sic today, it is possible not just to generate melodies, but to create an imitation of certain styles or composers, which raises questions about the nature of true creativi-ty and its limits. Another direction of using artificial intelligence in music is the crea-tion of virtual singers who become mega-popular. Such an example is given by the Japanese virtual singer Hatsune Miku, who is a hologram with an android interface and an artificially generated voice. In the field of video games, artificial intelligence knows how to create not only levels, but already generate game target worlds and complete games. Artificial intelligence in photography can generate images of non-existent people. At the same time, it is unlikely that artificial intelligence can com-pletely replace a human artist, after which he learns from the previously created ma-terial. This makes it possible to say that he left real creativity and knows how to compile in advance, and not to generate original artistic solutions.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) will affect almost every aspect of our lives and replace many of our jobs. On one view, machines are well suited to take over automated tasks and humans would remain important to creative endeavors. In this essay, I examine this view critically and consider the possibility that AI will play a significant role in a quintessential creative activity, the appreciation and production of visual art. This possibility is likely even though attributes typically important to viewers–the agency of the artist, the uniqueness of the art and its purpose might not be relevant to AI art. Additionally, despite the fact that art at its most powerful communicates abstract ideas and nuanced emotions, I argue that AI need not understand ideas or experience emotions to produce meaningful and evocative art. AI is and will increasingly be a powerful tool for artists. The continuing development of aesthetically sensitive machines will challenge our notions of beauty, creativity, and the nature of art.

Abstract:Over the past few years, specialised online and offline press blossomed with articles about art made "with" Artificial Intelligence (AI) but the narrative is rapidly changing. In fact, in October 2018, the auction house Christie's sold an art piece allegedly made "by" an AI. We draw from philosophy of art and science arguing that AI as a technical object is always intertwined with human nature despite its level of autonomy. However, the use of creative autonomous agents has cultural and social implications in the way we experience art as creators as well as audience. Therefore, we highlight the importance of an interdisciplinary dialogue by promoting a culture of transparency of the technology used, awareness of the meaning of technology in our society and the value of creativity in our lives.

Abstract:Some perceive AI as encroaching on human capacities, perchance affecting their perceptions of AI. Applying Schema theory, this study examines whether and to what extent human judges are biased in ascribing “creativity” to the artwork of artificial intelligence. To begin to examine whether an artist’s perceived identity (i.e., as an artificially intelligent agent (AI) or human) might produce different reactions in judging the same artwork, participants blocked by subject characteristics (e.g., graduate, undergraduate) were randomly assigned to one of two types of focus groups. The groups differed only in that they were led to believe the same artwork was the product of a human or the product of an AI artist, triggering very different identity schemas about the artist. Participants were asked to (a) define art; whether AI can (b) make art and (c) if given art (which was the same in all groups) is “art.” Both focus groups types similarly associated art with expression, creativity, providing a message, and broadly conceived the boundaries of what was art. They differed in that the “Human Artist group” had an interactive view of art (perceiving, providing feedback) but the “AI Artist group” said any sense (visual, auditory, etc.) stimulus was art. The “Human Artist group” thought AI could make art while the “AI Artist group” disagreed. Both types of focus groups believed that the given art piece is art. Implications of findings for applications and theory are discussed.

Abstract:This paper builds on the premise that art has a significant role to play in engaging with and exploring new technologies and in contributing to interdisciplinary conversations. Artists have often been pioneers in reflecting upon social and technological transformations by creating work that makes explicit the dangers, but also the exciting possibilities ushered in by innovation. After having, albeit briefly, traced the history of art engagement with technology (computer/net-art, generative art), the paper will focus on AI-art, now defined as GAI-art, to understand whether artificial intelligence is “set to become art’s next medium?” The question was prompted by the sale at Christie’s in October 2018 for $432,500 of a portrait entitled Edmund de Belamy , a work created by an algorithm called Generative Adversarial Network (GAN). The source code used by the Paris based art collective Obvious (borrowed from AI researcher/artist Robbie Barrat) to create the “artwork” triggered a debate as to the authenticity, authorship and ethics of using GAN to produce AI-art. The paper will contribute to such debate by exploring also the implications of systems more sophisticated than GAN – which seem to be able to act as “autonomous artificial artists” and produce new styles of art – and by showcasing the works of some of the most representative machine vision researchers/artists – Anna Ridler and Mario Klingeman, among others. AI artworks raise major philosophical questions, the meaning to be human in a hyper-connected world and the true nature of human creativity. Abstract:What can art do for artificial intelligence? This essay circles around this question from a viewpoint grounded in the embodied knowledge base of contemporary art. The author employs the term “feelthink” to refer to the shifting webs of perception, emotion, thought, and action probed by artists engaging AI. Tracing several metaphors used by artists to consider AI, the author identifies points where the metaphors delaminate, pulling away from the phenomena to which they refer. The author advocates for these partial and imagistic understandings of AI as probes which, despite or because of their flaws, contribute important ideas for the development and cultural positioning of AI entities. The author further questions the limited scope of art ideas addressed in AI research and proposes a thought experiment in which art joins industry as a source of questions for developing artificial intelligences. In conclusion, the essay’s structuring metaphor is described as an example of “feelthink” at work.

Abstract:This study investigates the creative capacities of artificial intelligence (AI), exemplified by ChatGPT-4, in comparison with human creativity, utilizing the Figural Interpretation Quest (FIQ) as the evaluative tool. The primary objective is to assess whether AI can surpass human performance in creative tasks, particularly in terms of flexibility and subjectively perceived creativity. Participants, including both ChatGPT-4 and humans, were asked to provide creative interpretations for a set of ambiguous, abstract figures. The study measured the flexibility of these interpretations and gathered subjective ratings of creativity from independent evaluators. Results indicated that while AI, on average, demonstrated higher flexibility in generating creative interpretations, human participants excelled in terms of subjectively perceived creativity. Furthermore, the most creative human responses were higher than those of AI in both flexibility and subjective creativity. These findings suggest that in these types of complex multimodal interpretation tasks, AI shows excellent potential and the ability to generate semantically diverse ideas, yet human subjectively perceived creativity remains for now unmatched. The study highlights the limitations of AI in replicating the complexity of human creativity and points to possible theoretical interpretations of the reported findings.

Abstract:With the continuous development and progress of science and technology, artificial intelligence (AI) has gradually become a part of the field of literary and artistic creation. In this process, more AI works of art have emerged at key moments. As a result, discussions of the evaluation of AI-produced art have become richer and richer. At present, when discussing whether or not works created by AI are art, the biggest controversy relates to whether AI creations can express emotions, as human art can. No textual research has yet been conducted on this topic. Although a few studies have explored the emotions elicited by AI works of art, most have focused on the identity cognition of AI and human artists. This research proposes a novel approach to artistic aesthetic experience to explore two research questions, as follows: 1) What types of emotional responses do observers have when they encounter works of art created by artificial intelligence? 2) Is there a significant difference in observers’ emotional responses to AI works of art and the works of human artists? In this study, the abstract works of art created by human artists and AI are used as the primary image stimulation, and the Geneva Emotion Wheel created by the Swiss Emotional Research Center is used as the basic measuring tool, allowing the study participants to choose from 20 emotion types and 5 intensity levels.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) is currently present in areas that were, until recently, reserved for humans, such as, for instance, art. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is not much empirical evidence on how people perceive the skills of AI in these domains. In Experiment 1, participants were exposed to AI-generated audiovisual artwork and were asked to evaluate it. We told half of the participants that the artist was a human and we confessed to the other half that it was an AI. Although all of them were exposed to the same artwork, the results showed that people attributed lower sensitivity, lower ability to evoke their emotions, and lower quality to the artwork when they thought the artist was AI as compared to when they believed the artist was human. Experiment 2 reproduced these results and extended them to a slightly different setting, a different piece of (exclusively auditory) artwork, and added some additional measures. The results show that the evaluation of art seems to be modulated, at least in part, by prior stereotypes and biases about the creative skills of AI. Abstract:Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have significantly improved the abilities of machines. Human-unique abilities, such as art creation, are now being challenged by AI. Recent studies have investigated and compared people's attitudes toward human-made and AI-generated artworks. These results suggest that a negative bias may exist toward the latter. However, none of these previous studies has examined the extent of this bias. In this study, we investigate whether a bias against AI art can be found at an implicit level. Viewers’ attitudes toward AI art were assessed using eye-tracking measures and subjective aesthetic evaluations. Visual attention and aesthetic judgments were compared between artworks categorized as human-made and AI-made. The results showed that although it was difficult for individuals to identify AI-generated artwork, they exhibited an implicit prejudice against AI art. Participants looked longer at paintings that they thought were made by humans. No significant effect of categorization of paintings was found in subjective evaluations. These findings suggest that although human and AI art may be perceived as having similar aesthetic values, an implicit negative bias toward AI art exists. Although AI can now perform creative tasks, artistic creativity is still considered a human prerogative.

Abstract:With the recent proliferation of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models capable of mimicking human artworks, AI creations might soon replace products of human creativity, although skeptics argue that this outcome is unlikely. One possible reason this may be unlikely is that, independent of the physical properties of art, we place great value on the imbuement of the human experience in art. An interesting question, then, is whether and why people might prefer human-compared to AI-created artworks. To explore these questions, we manipulated the purported creator of pieces of art by randomly assigning a "Human-created" or "AI-created" label to paintings actually created by AI, and then assessed participants' judgements of the artworks across four rating criteria (Liking, Beauty, Profundity, and Worth). Study 1 found increased positive judgements for human- compared to AI-labelled art across all criteria. Study 2 aimed to replicate and extend Study 1 with additional ratings (Emotion, Story, Meaningful, Effort, and Time to create) intended to elucidate why people more-positively appraise Human-labelled artworks. The main findings from Study 1 were replicated, with narrativity (Story) and perceived effort behind artworks (Effort) moderating the label effects ("Human-created" vs. "AI-created"), but only for the sensory-level judgements (Liking, Beauty). Positive personal attitudes toward AI moderated label effects for more-communicative judgements (Profundity, Worth). These studies demonstrate that people tend to be negatively biased against AI-created artworks relative to purportedly human-created artwork, and suggest that knowledge of human engagement in the artistic process contributes positively to appraisals of art.

This study investigates the various applications of AI in a creative context, differentiating between the type of art, language, and algorithms used. It also considers the philosophical implications of AI and creativity, questioning whether consciousness can be researched in machines and AI's potential interests and decision-making capabilities. Abstract:The purpose of the article is to reveal the specifics of creating new works of art using artificial intelligence technologies. The research methodology is based on the application of the dialectical method with its principles of consistency, development and unity of polarities since artificial intelligence as a complex sociocultural phenomenon provides unambiguous definitions and at the same time forces to interpret its essence and relations dialectically to its application field. The scientific novelty of the obtained results lies in the fact that artificial intelligence is considered a component of artistic creativity, one of which is to introduce technical innovations in human culture. Conclusions. The article focuses on the fact that the artificial intelligence issue is beyond the cultural discourse, and separating the artificial intelligence issue from culture inevitably leads to a simplified understanding. It is noted that the relevance of cultural research of artificial intelligence (AI) is determined by the spread of symbiotic forms of interaction between the user and global software, which requires not so much evaluating and correcting the negative consequences of the spread of technology but rather the development of meta technology to prevent them. For its part, the reflection of culture, when the latter rejects the ideas of the techno apocalypse and the rise of machines, can give an impetus to the emergence of new meanings and perspectives for man and culture. Finally, the article provides examples of the AI technologies use (in particular, Gan and CAN) in contemporary art. However, the more AI technologies are used in creating works of art, the more valuable an idea or a concept becomes. Today, when the performance and physical implementation of a project can be “shifted” to AI, new ideas become the main driving force in the development of art. The ideas generation may become the primary option not of a person but of a “machine”, which, once again, proves the correctness of the assumption that every year such human abilities as creativity, generation of new extraordinary ideas and solutions will become more valuable. And the routine performance, the analysis of big data, etc., are the tasks for machines, and they perform this work better than a human.
