Abstract:To solve the optimization problem of bistatic radar for belt barrier coverage, a two-dimensional deployment optimization method using adjacent deployment lines is proposed. First, the field of interest is approximately represented by a rectangular area, and then the area is divided into multiple identical sub barrier coverage areas. To give full play to the efficiency of the transmitters, the bistatic radars consisting of the transmitters and the receivers on the same deployment line and the adjacent deployment lines should be considered. Thus, four two-dimensional deployment patterns are introduced and analyzed. Furthermore, an optimization model based on these deployment patterns is proposed. The minimum deployment cost and the coverage area requirements are adopted as the optimization criterion and constraints, respectively. A method based on the greedy algorithm is exploited to solve the optimization model. The deployment locations and the minimum deployment cost can be calculated by the proposed method. Finally, the simulation results and analysis show that, compared with the existing method, the minimum deployment cost and the number of transmitters can be impressively reduced by the proposed method. The effectiveness of the proposed method is proven.
Minimum Cost Deployment of Bistatic Radar Sensor for Perimeter Barrier Coverage

Abstract:Perimeter barriers can provide intrusion detection for a closed area. It is efficient for practical applications, such as coastal shoreline monitoring and international boundary surveillance. Perimeter barrier coverage construction in some regions of interest with irregular boundaries can be represented by its minimum circumcircle and every point on the perimeter can be covered. This paper studies circle barrier coverage in Bistatic Radar Sensor Network (BRSN) which encircles a region of interest. To improve the coverage quality, it is required to construct a circle barrier with a predefined width. Firstly, we consider a BR deployment problem to constructing a single BR circular barrier with minimum threshold of detectability. We study the optimized BR placement patterns on the single circular ring. Then the unit costs of the BR sensor are taken into account to derive the minimum cost placement sequence. Secondly, we further consider a circular BR barrier with a predefined width, which is wider than the breadth of Cassini oval sensing area with minimum threshold of detectability. We propose two segment strategies to efficiently divide a circular barrier to several adjacent sub-ring with some appropriate width: Circular equipartition strategy and an adaptive segmentation strategy. Finally, we propose approximate optimization placement algorithms for minimum cost placement of BR sensor for circular barrier coverage with required width and detection threshold. We validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms through theory analysis and extensive simulation experiments.

Abstract:To construct circular barrier coverage (CBC) with multistatic radars, a deployment optimization method based on equipartition strategy is proposed in this paper. In the method, the whole circular area is divided into several sub-circles with equal width, and each sub-circle is blanketed by a sub-CBC that is built based on the multistatic radar deployment patterns. To determine the optimal deployment patterns for each sub-CBC, the optimization conditions are firstly studied. Then, to optimize the deployment of the whole circular area, a model based on minimum deployment cost is proposed, and the proposed model is divided into two sub-models to solve the optimization issue. In the inner model, it is assumed that the width of a sub-circle is given. Based on the optimization conditions of the deployment pattern, integer linear programming (ILP) and exhaustive method (EM) are jointly adopted to determine the types and numbers of deployment patterns. Moreover, a modified formula is introduced to calculate the maximum valid number of receivers in a pattern, thus narrowing the search scope of the EM. In the outer model, the width of a sub-circle is assumed to be a variable, and the EM is adopted to determine the minimum total deployment cost and the optimal deployment patterns on each sub-circle. Moreover, the improved formula is exploited to determine the range of width for a sub-circle barrier and reduce the search scope of the EM. Finally, simulations are conducted in different conditions to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The simulation results indicate that the proposed method can spend less deployment cost and deploy fewer transmitters than the state-of-the-artwork.

Energy-efficient Area Coverage in Bistatic Radar Sensor Networks

Abstract:In this paper we study area coverage in bistatic radar sensor networks (BRSN), which is composed of a collection of transmitters and receivers. Coverage in BRSN is much more difficult than that in traditional sensor networks as the sensing area of a bistatic radar depends on the positions of its component transmitter and receiver, and is in general of an elliptical shape. We first investigate the geometrical relationship between the c-coverage area of a bistatic radar and the distance between its component transmitter and receiver, based on which we reduce the number of candidate bistatic radars from all transmitter-receiver pairs. Then we reduce the problem dimension by transforming the area coverage problem to point coverage problem by employing intersection point concept. Finally we propose an efficient algorithm to solve the Point Coverage Problem, which thus solves the area coverage problem. We perform extensive simulations to validate our analysis and the performance of the proposed algorithm.
A multi-channel based passive detection strategy for high-speed moving target in the airspace under varying interference.

Abstract:Passive radar has shown lots of advantages as compared to active radar and has become a significant branch of bistatic radar. Detection difficulty of non-cooperative reflected signals at very low SNR is a well-known challenge in passive radar, and previous works have mainly studied multi-user co-operative detection based solutions. In this work, we study a passive radar system using the television satellite as illuminator of opportunity(IO), and focus on finding solution for detection challenges caused by time-varying interference and high-speed moving target through improving performance of each single detector. A multi-channel based passive detection strategy is proposed. The proposed method is characterized by sufficient information based fusion and weighted combining. Theoretical analysis and Monte Carlo simulation are conducted to evaluate the performance of our strategy.

Abstract:In this paper, we study optimal radar deployment for intrusion detection, with focus on network coverage. In contrast to the disk-based sensing model in a traditional sensor network, the detection range of a bistatic radar depends on the locations of both the radar transmitter and radar receiver, and is characterized by Cassini ovals. Furthermore, in a network with multiple radar transmitters and receivers, since any pair of transmitter and receiver can potentially form a bistatic radar, the detection ranges of different bistatic radars are coupled and the corresponding network coverage is intimately related to the locations of all transmitters and receivers, making the optimal deployment design highly non-trivial. Clearly, the detectability of an intruder depends on the highest SNR received by all possible bistatic radars. We focus on the worst-case intrusion detectability, i.e., the minimum possible detectability along all possible intrusion paths. Although it is plausible to deploy radars on a shortest line segment across the field, it is not always optimal in general, which we illustrate via counter-examples. We then present a sufficient condition on the field geometry for the optimality of shortest line deployment to hold. Further, we quantify the local structure of detectability corresponding to a given deployment order and spacings of radar transmitters and receivers, building on which we characterize the optimal deployment to maximize the worst-case intrusion detectability. Our results show that the optimal deployment locations exhibit a balanced structure. We also develop a polynomial-time approximation algorithm for characterizing the worse-case intrusion path for any given locations of radars under random deployment.

Abstract:Passive bistatic radar is of great interest in both civilian and military applications due to its numerous advantages. However, it also faces a great challenge of detecting weak echo signals. In this paper, a multistatic and multichannel passive radar detection system is constructed, which uses digital video broadcast-satellite as illuminator of opportunity. Furthermore, an adaptive fusion combination framework for moving target detection is then proposed, which exploits the optimization criterion of the normal deflection coefficient to optimize the weight that is designed for test statistics obtained in each individual static, and then yields the global decision through weighted fusion of the all detection statistics. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms exiting works under time-varying interference.

Abstract:The integration of both sensing and communication functions is a crucial feature for future communication systems. This paper considers a novel scenario where a radar covers multiple small-cell base stations which operate in different spectra. Due to the limited spectra resource, the radar needs to reuse the spectra of one BS for tracking. To suppress interference and improve performance, we propose a framework including two stages and the corresponding communication and sensing algorithms. Specifically, at the detection stage, we aim to minimize the system transmit power while maintaining the performance of both radar and communication. At the tracking stage, our goal is to maximize the radar sensing performance under a given power budget, while ensuring communication quality. Due to the complexity of the original problem, we address it by introducing auxiliary variables and proposing a penalty dual decomposition-based algorithm, enabling us to solve a more tractable form of the problem. In the inner loop, we propose a concave–convex procedure-based algorithm to handle the optimization problem, while adopting the block coordinate descent algorithm to iteratively update the variables. In the outer loop, we update the penalty term or Lagrange multipliers. Furthermore, we propose a radar target parameter estimation algorithm based on successive interference cancellation, which aims to mitigate communication interference. Finally, numerical simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system, and the superior performance of our proposed algorithms over benchmark algorithms.
Towards Optimal Barrier Coverage in Wireless Sensor and Actor Networks

Abstract:Barrier coverage in sensor networks has attracted much attention in recent years. Existing results revealed that sensor mobility can remarkably improve the coverage performance of sensor networks. Considering the high manufacture cost of mobile sensors, in this paper we propose to tradeoff the barrier coverage performance and deployment budget by employing a wireless sensor and actor network (WSAN), wherein an actor is used to move static sensors around in order to enhance the barrier coverage performance. We first formulate the barrier coverage problem in WSAN and propose a new coverage metric to evaluate the barrier coverage performance. Then we design an efficient actor movement scheme, S-AMS, for the case where the number of monitoring points can be divided by the number of available sensors. By exploiting the actor's mobility and clustering procedure, S-AMS is able to significantly improve barrier coverage. Based on the insight from S-AMS, we design G-AMS for the general case. We show that S-AMS achieves asymptotically optimal solution for the special case and G-AMS obtains close-to-optimal solution for the general case. Extensive simulations are conducted to demonstrate the performance of our proposed schemes.

In majority study of barrier coverage using sensor networks, sensors are assumed to have an isotropic sensing model. However, in many applications such as monitoring an area using video camera, the sensors have directional sensing model. In this paper, we investigate strong barrier coverage using directional sensors, where sensors have arbitrarily tunable orientations to provide good coverage. We investigate the problem of finding appropriate orientations of directional sensors such that they can provide strong barrier coverage. By exploiting geographical relations among directional sensors and deployment region boundaries, we first introduce the concept of virtual node to reduce the solution space from continuous domain to discrete domain. We then construct a directional barrier graph (DBG) to model this barrier coverage question such that we can quickly answer whether there are directional sensors' orientations that can provide strong barrier coverage over a given belt region. If the belt region is strong barrier covered, we then develop energy-efficient solutions to find strong barrier path(s) that will approximately minimize the total or the maximum rotation angles of all directional sensors. Extensive simulations are conducted to verify the effectiveness of our solution.

Abstract:In this paper, considering multiple surveillance regions in a dynamic environment, we investigate an optimal antenna deployment problem for distributed multistatic radar. The problem is solved by proposing a prediction based particle swarm optimization (PBPSO) algorithm. Unlike the traditional particle swarm optimization (PSO) method, which needs completely recomputation when the environment changes, the proposed method uses the information about the previous optimal deployment schemes to predict and optimize the current one. So it greatly increases the solving efficiency and computational load of the optimal problem. Firstly, by dividing a continuous time period into several scenarios, we use the previous optimal scheme and a Kalman prediction model to predict an approximate optimal scheme for the current scenario. Then, to obtain the real optimal scheme, we can use the predicted optimal scheme and PSO method to optimize. Numerical results are provided to verify the advantages of PBPSO in optimizing the antenna deployment scheme in a dynamic environment.

Optimal Beamforming for Bistatic MIMO Sensing

Abstract:This paper considers the beamforming optimization for sensing a point-like scatterer using a bistatic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) radar, which could be part of a joint communication and sensing system. The goal is to minimize the Cramér-Rao bound on the target position's estimation error, where the radar already knows an approximate position that is taken into account in the optimization. The optimization allows for beamforming with more than one beam per subcarrier. Optimal solutions for the beamforming are discussed for known and unknown channel gain. Numerical results show that beamforming with at most one beam per subcarrier is optimal for certain parameters, but for other parameters, optimal solutions need two beams on some subcarriers. In addition, the degree of freedom in selecting which end of the bistatic radar should transmit and receive is considered.

Abstract:An approach to radar netting is proposed to solve the problem of how optimally to locate the different radars in a radar network to achieve a satisfactory surveillance area and some highly-concerned areas inside. Based on the measured radar cross section (RCS) of the interested targets and the coverage diagrams of the radars, the performance distribution in the surveillance area is analyzed, and a mathematical model for radar netting optimization along with some strategies in the netting algorithm is presented. The approach also takes into account several factors, such as local terrain around radar, man-made interference, antiradiation missile, stealthy target, flying direction of target, and so on. Simple examples to illustrate the approach are included.

Abstract:This paper studies deterministic sensor deployment to ensure barrier coverage in wireless sensor networks. Most of existing work focused on line-based deployment, ignoring a wide spectrum of potential curve-based solutions. We, for the first time, extensively study the sensor deployment under general settings. We first present a condition under which line-based deployment is suboptimal, pointing to the advantage of curve-based deployment. By constructing a contracting mapping, we identify the characteristics for a deployment curve to be optimal. We then design sensor deployment algorithms for the optimal deployment curve by introducing a new notion of distance-continuous. Our findings show that i) when the deployment curve is distance-continuous, the proposed algorithm is optimal in terms of the vulnerability corresponding to the deployment, and ii) when the deployment curve is not distance-continuous, the approximation ratio of the vulnerability corresponding to the deployment by the proposed algorithm to the optimal one is upper bounded by min (π, ||AB||/||AGB|| 2n+√(2-1)/2n), where ||AB||, ||AGB|| and n are constants. Extensive numerical results corroborate our analysis.

Abstract: Passive bistatic coherent radar system operates with distinct non-cooperative transmitter and receiver located at different sites. In such spatial separation, the critical issues in attempting to operate a bistatic system with a noncooperative illuminator are target location and its observability, which were explored and solved in this paper. The solution to the bistatic triangle for target range from the receiver requires calculating the azimuth of the direct path pulse, which allows accurate measurement of the bistatic range to the target and computation of target slant range. Finally, the observability of the system was demonstrated.

Abstract:This paper is aimed to address the node placement problem in netted multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar systems, aiming to elevate surveillance performance. Currently, most placement optimization strategies either focus on long- baseline netted MIMO radar systems under incoherent signal integration processing or just address short- baseline netted MIMO systems where signals are fused through coherent integration. These methods are not comprehensive for generalized netted MIMO radar systems encompassing mixed baselines. Therefore, we propose a signal processing architecture based on hybrid integration and, upon this, devise a multi-constraint mathematical optimization problem model targeted at optimizing node locations to further enhance surveillance performance. Within this problem, we fully consider constraints such as the number of system nodes, architecture, deployment area, and sparsity requirements to ensure the satisfaction of the system's finite resource requirements. Recognizing that the formulated optimization problem is nonconvex and complex, we introduce a metaheuristic method based on a two-stage search strategy to solve it. Through numerical experiments, we demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed node placement optimization solution. The results highlight its capability to significantly enhance surveillance performance by maximizing detection capabilities across different areas of varying importance, all while maintaining flexibility in resource allocation.

A Distributed MIMO Radar Oriented Barrage Jamming Strategy

Abstract:Distributed multiple input multiple output (MIMO) radar has attracted much attention for its improved detection and estimation performance as well as enhanced Electronic Counter-Counter Measures (ECCM) ability. In order to protect the target from being detected and tracked by such radar, we consider a barrage jamming strategy orienting towards a distributed MIMO. We first derive the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) of target parameters estimation using a distributed MIMO under barrage jamming environments. We then set maximizing the CRB as the criterion for jamming resource allocation, aiming at degrading the accuracy of target parameters estimation. Particle swarm optimization is utilized to solve the maximizing problem. Simulation results demonstrate the advantages of the the proposed strategy over traditional jamming methods.

Abstract:In this paper, the comparison is investigated between quasi-monostatic and near forward scatter configurations for WiFi-based passive radar sensors. To this purpose, a barrier coverage application for vehicular targets is considered as a possible implementation of the conceived green sensor within surface transportation monitoring solutions. The performance of the two alternative sensor geometries are compared by means of theoretical and experimental analysis as well as based on considerations on the practical implementation. The reported results provide a realistic characterization of the performance of a bistatic radar sensor to be exploited in barrier coverage problems and give indications for the design of such a system. The specific demonstration with WiFi-based passive radar aims at extending the use of this emerging technology to perimeter monitoring applications for vehicular targets, exploiting the near forward scatter geometry.
